ThinkProgress Introduces New Comments System

ThinkProgress is elated to announce important, new changes to our comments section, including comments registration.

As frequent visitors of this blog are well aware, the feedback in the comments section often fails to adhere to our Terms of Use. Our new comments system will more strictly enforce these guidelines. Here are the new features you need to be aware of:

1) Comments registration: Beginning today, you must register in order to comment on ThinkProgress.

2) Recommend comments: Once you are logged on in the comments section, you will see a green thumbs-up icon next to each comment. Registered users will now be allowed to vote up comments that they like by clicking on the icon.

3) View top rated comments: You will now be able to view comments by their ratings. At the top of the comments section for each blog post, you will see a link to sort comments by “top rated” or by “date.”

4) Report abuse: Next to each comment, registered users will see a red flag icon. If you notice a comment that does not adhere to our Terms of Use, simply click on this icon. If a sufficient number of registered commenters flag a comment, it will be removed from the comments section and placed in a moderation queue. We will then determine whether to permanently delete the comment or republish it.

You can register either through the comments section or by clicking on “register” at the top right hand side of the sidebar.

If you encounter any problems registering, please let us know. And tell us what you think about the new comments system in our new comments section!

UPDATE: We’ve encountered some early problems and have taken down registration for the time being.

UPDATE II: Problems should be fixed, and you should be able to register. Please contact us if you encounter issues.

    It’s about time! Thank you!

  2. DennisRaines says:

    Neat.

Although I’m getting page errors quite often, it is working (obviously). Not Firefox friendly?

  3. RobertSeattle says:

Got lots of errors after I hit submit…

rdPress database error: [UPDATE command denied to user 'thinkp-readonly'@'localhost' for table 'wp_users']
    UPDATE wp_users SET (etc)

But it seems to have worked.

  4. fletc3her says:

I got a bunch of errors when I registered, but it seems to have gone through. I think this is a great move. It does not stop someone determined to shared their opinion, but will hopefully cut down on the amount of sniping which takes place on the comments.

  5. bilbobaggins says:

Thanks. But your are throwing a lot of errors.

I’m viewing on Firefox and it works just fine.

  6. RobertSeattle says:

Check your permissions on your webserver.

But thanks for adding a login.

  8. Wayne says:

    Awsome, registered.

There are some errors that pop on the page when registering though.

Thanks Faiz and the TP crew =)

    At last!

    Thank you.

  10. Buckie Boy says:

Good bye Mr. P, Jake, CT_V1, hehe.

the name filter would not let me use Buck Fush

  11. Faiz says:

We’re experiencing some kinks in the early going. We’re trying to iron them out. Please hang with us.

  17. Buckie Boy says:

    Jake D Fake –

  19. Chris L says:

I’m still here. Is TP going to turn into an echo chamber now?

    Comment by Jake D. — September 18, 2007 @ 6:02 pm
    #

No, but it will (hopefully) end the namejacking and help keep people on topic. However, if you would like an echo chamber, may I recommend FreeRepublic.com, or redstate.com. They are both fine echo chambers with no dissent.

  20. Chris L says:

It is always been assumed, supposed, guessed, whatever you want to call it, that there were actually only a few trolls, operating under a host of different names. Hopefully, this puts an end to that problem. Not holding my breath, just hoping.

  21. Wayne says:

It is always been assumed, supposed, guessed, whatever you want to call it, that there were actually only a few trolls, operating under a host of different names. – Chris L

Well they have to have a valid email as well, to get the first password to login.
If MrP wants to setup that many email addies to get them banned, doesn’t bother me. A lot of trouble for him to go through for that though

  22. Nevar says:

    Quit sniveling Jake.

  23. wiseass.org says:

    Finally!!!

Watch as the number of homophobic GOP trolls and sock puppets plummet.

  24. Veritas says:

Kudos to TP for this registration process! Now maybe we can engage in intelligent repartee without too much pesky interference from the trolls. Thanks, Faiz et al! Now it’s “safe” to come back to the TP threads! Heads Up and Thumbs Up to TP!

  25. wiseass.org says:

Anyone else having issues with updating their profile to change their password to something they can remember?

I get a log-in incorrect error when I try to change it to something other than the string of numbers and characters generated in the registration email.

Raven – howdy. No, haven’t had much of a chance to fly fish. Too much time fund raising for local politicians. I must say, the fund raising parties have been fun.

Like your new name – even though the spelling isn’t correct, it is still pronouced never as in never again can we Americans allow a stubborn, ego-centric idiot get placed in the White House and never again can America send its military off to fight in a war based on lies.

Vote Bill Richardson in 2008 for president – the candidate of change, the candidate with experience.

  46. Coffins Draped with a Flag says:

Howdy Jake, yeah, even Republicans support Bill Richardson. Bill Richardson is the only candidate that will bring all the troops home from Iraq and Bill Richardson’s campaign is a Grassroots Campaign, not one managed by the DC beltway Dems.

  47. Veritas says:

  48. wamcgee says:

  49. wiseass.org says:

#40 Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) “declared” martial law?!

    Ahhhh, no.

    From The Associated Press:

Kerry, D-Mass., is heard to say, “That’s alright, let me answer his question.” Audience members applaud, and Meyer struggles to escape for several seconds as up to four officers try to remove him from the room.

Meyer screams for help and asks “What did I do?” as he tries to break away from officers. He is forced to the ground and officers order him to stop resisting. Meyer says he will walk out if the officers let him go.

As Kerry tells the audience he will answer the student’s “very important question,” Meyer struggles on the ground and yells at the officers to release him, crying out, “Don’t Tase me, bro,” just before he is Tasered.

The Florida campus police are not under Kerry’s control, and Kerry was willing to answer the Meyer’s questions.

  50. Coffins Draped with a Flag says:

    good job!

  57. Coffins Draped with a Flag says:

Wonder how many blog names were name jacked before the blogger got to register.

  58. wiseass.org says:

Richardson is not ready for prime-time. While I agree with some of his positions, he is not fit to be POTUS (though Bush as so lowered that bar it seems almost comical to say anyone is unfit to be POTUS).

Edwards, Obama, Dodd, Clinton (shudder)… all would make better presidents than Richardson, who is not up to speed to be President.

His answer that he thought Byron “Whizzer” White as his ideal Supreme Court Justice nominee and cited the fact he had played football as at all relevant when he tried to walk that one back on Meet the Press is enough to make him unsuitable for the Oval Office. That is just one of a long long list of bone-headed gaffes, mistakes and plan stupid things Richardson has done.

How do I get on that list?

Any assistance you can provide to be added to it, would be greatly appreciated since being ignored by homophobic, warmongering Fright-wing whackos is a merit badge in my book.

    #77 He’s fat too.

    What are you… a 6 year-old?

  67. Coffins Draped with a Flag says:

wiseass.org – I take it that you are an Edwards supporter… just another Senator like Clinton, Dodd, Obama and Biden… Senators without governing experience, Senators that come with their own skeletons and baggage.

If one is looking for honesty and integrity in a candidate, then the candidates that fit that profile would be Dennis Kucinich and Mike Gravel. Both these candidates receive a two thumbs up from me. The down side is that they are too progressive to gather the majority number of votes needed to win the general election.

  68. Zooey says:

    Yay! TP has registration!

  69. wiseass.org says:

  77. wiseass.org says:

#87 I take it that you are an Edwards supporter…

Then you would be wrong. I have not yet picked a horse in the race. Every politician has some skeletons (even Kuccinich). Resumé wise, early one I was actually hoping RIchardson would be a good candidate. I even raised a few hundred for him before the first debates bean on his resumé alone. However I have since pulled the plug since he is NOT a person fit for the big desk.

You mention Gravel and Kuccinich… Gravel is a nut-job approaching Lyndon LaRouche territory. I could live with Kuccinich though I think he is wholly unelectable and would not carry a single state, thus handing the Oval Office to whatever GOP whack-job they nominate.

  78. Coffins Draped with a Flag says:

  82. gorn by any other name says:

    TP, the grownups thank you.

  83. willyloman says:

Gravel is the “nut-job” that filibusted for 5 months to stop funding Vietnam…

and he is the “nut-job” that read the “Pentagon Papers” into Congressional record when the CIA was looking for them…

I’ll take that kind of nut job over the Cheney kind, any day.

  84. Coffins Draped with a Flag says:

willyloman – thanks for the information regarding Mike Gravel. I’ll take that kind of “nut-job” in place of Cheney, Bush, and all the rest of the cabal.

  88. Lefty Patriot says:

Somebody nicked my name, so I’m in under this one (used to be ronjazz). I see that registration doesn’t prevent the blatherings of Jake The Fake, nor raise his IQ one iota. On another subject, the tasering of the student questioner in Florida is the cearest indication of Bush’s destruction of the Constitution that can be found at this point. All of those cop-thugs should lose their jobs and be jailed for assault.

  95. wiseass.org says:

#105 all well and good 3 decades ago. I think we all here (Jake D excepted) would take damn near anyone over Cheney and Bush, but Gravel is insanely wrong on numerous domestic issues. His decades ago service in helping end Vietnam are laudable, but he is so whacked out policy wise in the 21st century on domestic issues (flat tax anyone?) to make him a non-starter.

  96. Coffins Draped with a Flag says:

Was it Jake that did all the “name-jacking”?

  97. Badmoodman says:

  98. Erroll says:

Chris Matthews has spent at least half the time on Hardball tonight discussing, not the occupation or health care or corruption in Congress or American militarism, but rather the arrest of O.J. Actually, that is a very untrue statement. Dennis Kucinich will also bring the troops and he also has a grass roots campaign. Perhaps we should run Kucinich for President and Richardson for Vice President. I could go for that.

  117. willyloman says:

In fact, Kucinich is looking to bring them home before the election by stopping the funding and removing the Vice President and the President for treason!

I hate having to sign in, but I truly and emphatically look forward to this keeping out some of the mindless trolls.

I’ll own up to a few:
    (the original)Ben Dover
    dirty hippie
    satnin

  137. Snowball says:

Well, I guess this is for the better, but reading the trolls is one of the most entertaining features of TP.

BREAKING: Jim Webb explains why we must Support the “Webb Amendment” and the Troops!

Jim Webb made an exclusive video to explain why Congress must support the troops and pass the “Webb Amendment,” on Wednesday. He asks us to call our elected officials and tell them to support this very simple, but important measure. [...]

why did you change from Ben Dover?
    being nosey…

  141. John says:

I was namejacked by a ‘friendly’ and he was funnier than I, so I moved on.

  142. katy says:

    simple, logical answer, john…

    QUESTION:

am i required to “Logout” (above right) ? … when? why?

    anyone know?

  143. wiseass.org says:

Changing the password in the “update Profile” section works for me now.

  144. G2U says:

Will this actually keep trolls away? I have doubts, but here’s to hoping.

  145. wiseass.org says:

while we are talking screen names, I also posted under lestatdelc… but never made a secret of the fact that I also run the http://www.wiseass.org website, hence this screen name.

  146. beep52 says:

Add one more voice supporting registration. The comment section had become so full of junk that it wasn’t worth sorting through to get to the good stuff. I hope this helps!

  147. toasterhead says:

Thank you thank you thank you!

  148. Wilco says:

I’m hoping some of the posters who abandoned TP within the last few months come back. This change is hopeful.

  149. Marie says:

    Hooray! It’s done!

Well I have to say it depended on the Troll-de-jour.

  151. Arne Langsetmo says:

Testing registration. Flag it as abuse and it will go away. ;-)

    Cheers,

  152. Veritas says:

This is like a breath of fresh air! It’s great to be back to some sanity here and a forum for intelligent discourse. Heads up, TP, for taking the time and consideration to effect the changes.

Just breezin’ by to say hello. Good to see all of you again! Marie, Trueblue, Coffins, Katy,Zooey, Wayne,Ms. Joanne, Willyloman, etc. If I’ve missed somone, mea culpa. Now we can have a true “TP peace and love fest!”. Sweet dreams.

  153. Bodhittsatva says:

So when those of you state how you cant wait for Tony Snows death, will TP delete this or not? Because if they allow it they should allow comment on Lizbeth Edwards as well. Let see how fair this is

Only in Retardo world are the two the same. She is a private citizen and he was (at the time) a person we were paying. Two totally different entities. Also, she lives in reality, and he lives in Wallyworld over there.

I doubt if anyone here is wishing for Tony snow’s death… I want to say or anyone else’s also, but I will stop at Tony Snow.

  155. willyloman says:

Not that the analogies are perfect, but…

Would you say that to wish for Charles Manson’s death had to be levied in the same breath as wishing for June Cleaver’s (tried to keep the same time frame) in order to be “fair”?

One committed a crime willfully, the other did not. The crime, was horrible and resulted in the deaths of innocents – the other made cookies.

Now, yes, Elizabeht Edwards is no June cleaver, nor is Tony Snow charlie manson, but the argument holds. the only reason you talk about “fairness” is because of party affiliation.

If you can’t see past that to the nature of the human, this country is really bad off.

  156. Juan C. says:

Im in…although I think the names of posters are too small.

  157. willyloman says:

and no links to their sites

  158. willyloman says:

someone recommend me, I want to see what happens. I’ll do you back.

  159. willyloman says:

the little thumb turned grey…that can’t be good… I got you back.

nothing happens. no horns, no music…nothing.

  160. willyloman says:

didn’t see it. I will check the Comedy Central site.

  161. Zooey says:

Thank you, Faiz & crew, for fixing things up so nicely. Great work!

  162. Vinnie says:

Fabulous. I gave up on the comments for a while. Maybe I’ll return now.

  163. jotro says:

Nice work. It was getting very hard to read through all the nonsense.

  164. Zooey says:

You know what might be nice? A larger font on the “Comment by….” line. Damn, that’s small, and my vision sucks.

    :-)

  165. jotro says:

When sorted by rating, it would be nice to see what the value is, at least in some relative way. Also is a little clumsy to get back to the main page after commenting or sorting.

  166. Gregor Samsa says:

Well, registration is certainly a welcome change, however long overdue.

  167. Gregor Samsa says:

I’ve made comments in a few of the threads and I’ve got to say I love the new registration system.

    It’s fantastic, methinks!

    ;-)

  168. The Fly-Man says:

    Dee-diddly-lightful!

  169. Fool Zero says:

Good idea, TP! I’d been avoiding the comments sections for the last few months because of all the troll wars I kept finding there.

Registration worked smoothly, though once I got to the “Update Profile” page there seemed to be no way back to the comments section.

  170. Jason M. Hendler says:

  171. missmolly says:

Thank heavens! Hopefully this will keep the trolls and namejackers out.

The only problem I had was that I couldn’t find the e-mail with my password — I finally found it in my spam folder.

  172. DRxJ says:

    Hell yeah!
    It’s about time!

Ohhh, and Jake D., if you’re here this early, my favorite Van Halen song from the 80’s was “Romeo’s Delight”
    Heh
(My apologies to TripMaster Monkey and Jay Randal. It was really difficult to dumb down to the right’s ditto head motto and agenda, to pass as a troll)
    Jake D.,
    SUCKA!

  173. Bush is a four letter word says:

Thanks for the change. Sadly, my name is already taken.

  174. Jeremy in Denver says:

Someone got in with my name, so I’ll just use a slight variation of it. TP, thanks for this. Better late than never I guess.

Hopefully this’ll help thin the Troll population.

  175. Buck says:

    TP crew, thank you.

  176. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Thank you, Faiz, and the good people at Think Progress. You’ve done a good thing and the right thing. This could be the start of something great. Keep up with the technology changes. As this works its kinks out, please keep “Spell Checker” and “Preview Post” options in mind for the future. I have seen them on other Word Press blogs, so I know it’s possible. But make sure everything works out with this, first.

    Once again, a thousand thanks.

  177. FactsOnly says:

    Belated Thank You.

I was busy and did not have time for the web, but today I came back and whoa! Finally!

I fully expect this site to gain in profile with just such a simple measure promoting some resemblance of sane discussion.

    Thank you again.
