U.S. Attorney Paulose Dresses Down Employee Using Terms ‘Fat,’ ‘Black,’ ‘Lazy,’ And ‘Ass’»

Eric Black at the Minnesota Monitor writes that the U.S. attorney in Minnesota, Rachel Paulose, is under investigation. The federal Office of Special Counsel is looking into allegations that she “mishandled classified information, decided to fire the subordinate who called it to her attention, retaliated against others in the office who crossed her, and made racist remarks about one employee.”

Highlights of the charges:

– Paulose mishandled classified information. Black writes that Paulose regularly received “status updates on the war on terror” from intelligence and law enforcement agencies. The “secret” reports were supposed to be locked up, but Paulose “regularly left the reports loose in her office, sometimes unattended.”

– Paulose threatened to fire an employee who raised concerns about the material. Then-First Assistant U.S. Attorney John Marti spoke to Paulose about safeguarding the classified materials and “as required by regulations, filed a report with the national office that oversees U.S. attorneys.” Paulose began “threatening” to fire Marti and “bad-mouthing” him to other colleagues. He eventually resigned.

– Paulose repeatedly retaliated against employees suspected of “disloyalty.” Paulose “allegedly said that she would make the woman so miserable that she would want to quit. In some instances, Paulose allegedly ordered those in charge of performing job evaluations to downgrade the reviews of those she considered disloyal.”

– Paulose called employees racial epithets. “Paulose allegedly denigrated one employee of the office, using the terms ‘fat,’ ‘black,’ ‘lazy’ and ‘ass.’”

In April, four top staffers to Paulose voluntarily demoted themselves in protest of her “highly dictatorial style” of managing. She also “earned a reputation for quoting Bible verses and dressing down underlings.”

A look at Paulose’s background indicates that she was handpicked by the Justice Department because of her personal connections, rather than her professional qualifications. She was a special assistant to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and was best buds with Monica Goodling, who infamously admitted to considering “party affiliation in screening applicants to become immigration judges.”

Paulose also created controversy when her lavish swearing-in ceremony in March included a professional photographer, a color guard, and a choir.

Digg It!

  2. Jay Randal Says:

Is she a hypocrite GOPer broad attorney?

  3. Badmoodman Says:

Sounds like another remedial law graduate from Regent U.

  4. Raven Says:

If I remember correctly, she is a Regent grad.

  5. TripMaster Monkey Says:

Hate to be a fly in the ointment, but:

Rachel Paulose of Eagan became the federal government’s top prosecutor in Minnesota when the U.S. Senate unanimously confirmed her early Saturday.

Granted, this was while the Senate was still Republican-controlled…but not one dissenting voice?

  6. TheRepublicofStupidity Says:

And god friends w/ Monica Pauling too!

  7. Slim Tyranny Says:

A member of the Federalist Society making racist remarks? What are the odds?

  8. TheRepublicofStupidity Says:

Supposed to be “good” in the above, but it works that way too, strangely enough…

  9. Publius Says:

I don’t think your photo is of the woman you’re writing about. I could be wrong, but I don’t think that’s her. Just wanted to let you know.

  10. upside00 Says:

And we would expect anything else from a Repug US Attorney?

Ater all, the Repug candidates won’t even waste their precious time attending an African-American venue, so why would the US Attorney’s office consider them worthy of respect?

  11. Raven Says:

Correction, Yale law school graduate 1997

  12. Slim Tyranny Says:

A member of the Federalist Society making racist remarks? What are the odds?

She didn’t go to Regent law, she went to Yale Law. She’s especially dangerous — a wingnut with actual intelligence. Too bad she uses it on office politics and elaborate swearing-in parties for herself.

  13. bobh Says:

ever since i first heard of her i knew this woman would be her own undoing.

  14. Dave C Says:

At least she didn’t try to have sex with a 5 year old. Yet.

    Comment by bobh — September 18, 2007 @ 10:35 am

She was born in India, which makes it worse that she can’t have respect or empathy for another Minority.

  18. bobh Says:

    I agree. sounds like a self-hater.

  19. pbg Says:

This is the real face of fascism, folks–a member of the chosen elite, assured of her connections at the top, acting like a little tin god over her subjects, rude and abusive because they have no power against her, whose first mission is enforcing loyalty, dripping arrogance from every limb…

This is what they’re turning America into. This abusive aristocracy is what they want–and what Progressives have been fighting against since the Revolutionary War.

This is the face of the enemy.

She was only a few months old when she came to this country.

  21. TheRepublicofStupidity Says:

Paulose = slimeball H1-B visa holder, or might as well be.

    Comment by Anti-Treason — September 18, 2007 @ 10:35 am

    Wrong. Not an H1-B.

  22. VerbalKint Says:

This rightwing religious freak is a disgrace to herself, her job, her state and her country. In other words, she is the perfect Bush administration appointee.

  23. TheRepublicofStupidity Says:

India = terrible immigrants that love feeding GOP coffers. Rachel Paulose exemplifies this in strides.

    Comment by Anti-Treason — September 18, 2007 @ 10:44 am

Kind of a racist comment. Anti-Treason is a troll, folks. Look out!!!!

  24. upside00 Says:

She was only a few months old when she came to this country.

    Comment by TheRepublicofStupidity — September 18, 2007 @ 10:50 am

But sounds like she was there long enough to learn the Caste System and how it works.

  25. VerbalKint Says:

Just to confirm: yes, she graduated from Yale, yes she is far too inexperienced to hold such a high ranking position, yes that is her picture, yes she is of Indian descent, and yes she is a U.S. citizen.

  26. VerbalKint Says:

Paulose’s behavior has absolutely nothing to do with her Indian heritage. It has everything to do with her rightwing religious extremist fascist beliefs.

  27. Snidely Whiplash Says:

What? She doesn’t hold government secrets in confidence and is a racist?? She must fit right in at Bush & Co.

  28. TheRepublicofStupidity Says:

But sounds like she was there long enough to learn the Caste System and how it works.

    Comment by upside00 — September 18, 2007 @ 10:53 am

    At 2 or 3 months?

Seems more likely she learned it in this country. No doubt, she picked up “baggage” from the old country, but she’s been here since she was just a few months old.

  29. Neeko Says:

Gee who would have thought that a loyal Bushie would turn out to be so inept?

Their only talent seems to be hiding the truth from the masses. Take the new study claiming that over one million Iraqis have been killed. I’m guessing that piece of info will be buried along with the rest.

The truth is just too negative! Let’s remain in our bubble.

  30. Romeo'sDelight Says:

About the racist remark, I think the key word is “allegedly”.
Remember, Isiah Thomas is allegedly to have made flirtatious advances at a co-worker, as well as allegedly using vulgar language.

  32. Eskwaya Says:

    Comment by Eskwaya — September 18, 2007 @ 11:05 am

Because she took the Loyal BushCo oath and will be protected as long as she does their bidding and her Daddy keeps dumping big bucks into the Repug coffers.

  35. Luis M Says:

Her genes didn’t turn her into a racist. Her education did. And I’m not talking about school.

  36. upside00 Says:

Next thing you know, she’ll be at UC Berkeley alongside John Yoo.
    Comment by Anti-Treason — September 18, 2007 @ 11:07 am

Now there is one scary Piece of Sh!t! He makes Darth look like a Democrat!

  37. Hedley Lamarr Says:

Surely Ms Paulose is being quoted out of context. What she most probably said to an underling was, “Maam, you should encourage your fellow black employees to get the Latino cleaning staff to get off their lazy asses and clean my private rest room better. If you can do that your next merit pay increase will be a fat one.

  38. A Patriot Acting Says:

Anyone else notice the MO of all these bootlicking underqualified appointees? Once they’ve been installed in there job they promptly go to work making everyone under them so uncomfortable that they either quit or move out from under said appointee, leaving these spots to be filled with more cooperative tiny bootlickers. It’s happening in every branch of government that this Administration has corrupted. If only they knew as much about the law as they do about the GOP way of cleaning house. This woman needs to be dis-barred! Seems like the easiest and one of the only solutions available. If only the American Bar Assoc. took itself seriously and held itself up to a minimum of ethics. Then again, they didn’t do squat about Gonzales.

  39. Sharon Says:

Another interesting specamin in the rep group…..This one has dead eye’s like condi rice, wonder if they share the same passion for shoe buying during disaster’s….

  42. Midwest Product Says:

Jeez guys, get off this poor woman’s back. She’s just doing what Jesus would do. You know, leaving classified documents out unattended, calling her staff fat and lazy, firing people for not washing her feet with their hair. It’s Christianity 101.

  43. Pete Bogs Says:

she may have even used them all at once… i.e. “Get your fat, lazy, black *ss out of my office!”

these Bible-quoting consternos are all about the tolerance, aren’t they?

  44. outside trader Says:

What a bunch of lower caste complainers….take heart..slavery has honor..remember ‘Uncle Tom’?

  45. TheRepublicofStupidity Says:

Shut the hell up, do you understand?

    Comment by Anti-Treason — September 18, 2007 @ 11:40 am

I still say you’re a troll! Last time Anti-Treason was here, turned out to be Mr P pretending he’s a lib. Starts making more and more exaggerated statements, trying to get people to go along w/ him.

    Look out! This is troll!

  46. The Shadow Says:

This women is the type of prosecutor we want in office. He hates blacks so much he tries to fire the one in her own office. Imagine what she does to the ones who really commit a crime. The Federalist Society strikes again, by the way Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Alito, Scalia, are all members. Poor Clarence Thomas they wouldn’t accept him because they don’t want blacks, even the ones who hate their own people. So his application was returned marked, “N Words need not apply”, so he appealed to the Republican party and they said yes.

  47. Richard Hatch Says:

    You’re both trolls.

  48. Young Republican Says:

So, Anti Treason dude, like Rachel… like uh, wouldya, huh?

  53. troqua Says:

Racists and pedophiles, all on Alberto’s watch.

  54. OutSourced Says:

Ms. Paulose’s alleged behavior suggests that she can’t manage her own ego, much less an office of US attorneys. The alleged behavior, if true, deserves censure, demotion or dismissal. She seems another case of an incompetent president not wanting to employ anyone more competent than himself, a standard, no doubt, he’s used since his fraternity days.

  55. TheRepublicofStupidity Says:

Don’t slander me and you won’t be confronted. In fact, you should take your useless posts elsewhere.

    Comment by Anti-Treason — September 18, 2007 @ 12:09 pm

WOW! You’re scary, and I still say, Yer a troll.

  56. OutSourced Says:

Paulose is merely adopting the prevailing management style at the DOJ. She’s just too inexperienced a bureaucrat to hide it. A year ago she might have gotten away with this. Rebuilding the DOJ will be hard enough without her carrying on like a spoiled princess for another eighteen months. What are the odds she’s among the first USA’s to be let go by a new administration?

  57. TheRepublicofStupidity Says:

What are the odds she’s among the first USA’s to be let go by a new administration?

Highly likely, and watch the GOOPers cry foul when it happens.

    Your tax dollars at work!
    Same diff.
January 2008 cannot come soon enough.

  59. OutSourced Says:

Ms. Paulose’s “unanimous” confirmation was not voted on by the relevant committee; she was confirmed along with more than a hundred other ominations for various federal jobs via a year-end vote. Virtually a recess appointment, but not quite. The Senate should rethink how it “cleans up” its year-end business. Who knows what else creeps through this way.

  60. willyloman Says:

    I care, Republic! and I think I agree…. yep…trolls!

  61. The Shadow Says:

Ms Paulose if very qualified based on her racist views and she’s a loyal Bushie. And it doesn’t hurt to be a FOM, (Friend of Monica Goodling), the know nothing assistant to that great know nothing Attorney General the Honorable Alberto (Fredo) Gone-zales.

  62. OutSourced Says:

Ms. Paulose is too inexperienced for this job, but that was one of the reasons she got it. She’s little different from some of the top staff picks at Main Justice.

Her South Asian heritage is irrelevant to her behavior; that’s her own doing. But she was groomed early on, and helped into Yale, by a gross roots wingnut program that wants to plant and harvest more Sam Alitos and John Roberts. It interviews thousands of conservative high school and college students every year and helps them get into Ivy League programs, encouraging their wingnuttery while minimizing their paper trail. This is not your mom or dad’s GOP. As Scott Horton suggests, it is a nomenklatura in the making.

I’ve noticed you believe everyone to be Mr. P. That troll has you wrapped around his finger, or wrapped in constant paranoia.

    Comment by Anti-Treason

It’s rather that, regardless of your identities, we’ve lumped you all into that special category of resident juvenile imbecile whose only purpose is to disrupt and divert.

By calling you all Mr. P. … well, he’s the lucky one to become famous, and the rest of you are simply envious of his rabidity.
And Mr. P. does have a certain resonance to it, eh?

  67. JMOHR Says:

You people just do not understand how our society works. You believe that government serves some purpose other than supplying the over class with favored treatment and privilege. The purpose of the Republican elite is to create a caste system such as we do see in India.

The Republicans will accomplish this transformation by:

    1. Turning government into the training ground for like-minded overseers. Paulrose is an example of this. She is learning that the government serves the over class. She will be rewarded with a good living through the contacts that she makes with her masters.

    2. Government will continue to serve the over class. The Justice Department ensures that minorities and the lower class will be power less. The power of the state will be used to oppress dissent as the lower and middle classes realize that they are being bled dry for their superiors.

    3. The government will support the conversion of this country to a theocracy. Religion will be used to sedate the masses. They will be taught that they are morally unworthy since they fail to prosper financially. This will delay the recognition of what has happened to their class.

    4. The government will continue to rewrite rules for the rich and corporate interests. At the same time, they will reinforce the lessons of self reliance and responsibility. Thus the middle and working classes (who are not taken in with the corruption of religion ) will believe that their failures are again their own fault. The wealthy will be held up as proving their value even though the wealth was gained by increasingly shifting risk and responsibility to those least able to aford it while the wealthy are taxed at a far lower effective rate to encourage their advance.

Paulrose and the others merely flaunt their well deserved superiority because they understand that the mass of this country are sheep who deserved to be led to their slaughter.

  68. BubbaJudge Says:

Looks to me like she graduated from the Malkin school of Self Hate.

  69. BARTLEBEE Says:

I heard that since she considers herself Snow White, that she was just assigning them nicknames like the Seven Dwarfs.

Theres “fatty” “blacky” “lazy” and “assy”.

She’s working on the other 3.

  70. ghosdog Says:

If you want additional insight into the the Rachel Paulose U.S. Attorney’s office, check out the lies and misrepresentations of one of her subordinates relative to the supposed ‘investigation’ into a color-of-law (when law enforcement, jailers, etc., commit crimes) criminal complaint by an inmate who was tortured in the county jail just a couple of blocks from ‘her’ office…check out a blog with audio recordings of this subordinates lies to the victim…

Weeks of follow up calls by the victim to discuss the complaints about the lies and misrepresentations, (which were provided as partial transcripts from the audio recordings via email as clear proof (which you can now listen to online) to DoJ HQ to be dealt with and forwarded to the offending prosecutor), were met with a letter to not contact anyone in the office.

An unqualified Bush crony (yes, I know it is redundant) appointed to a position of power in the federal government!?

I am shocked -shocked!- I tell ya!

(Another trait that Bush loyalists seem to share is their emotional immaturity. Choir? Color guard? How old is this woman, 15? And the taxpayers get to pick up -at least- some of the tab of course, while the Bush loyalists rant about “weaning” poor people off government “handouts” and “entitlement programs”… shheesshh…)
