Bush’s Agriculture Secretary quitting to run for Senate.

Following the news last week that Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) will not seek another term in office, Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns “has decided to resign from President Bush’s cabinet to return to Nebraska and enter the 2008 Senate race.” Johanns, a former two-term Republican governor, is expected to make a formal announcement in Nebraska next week after he “has submitted his resignation to the White House.”

The term Cut and Run achieves its full linguistic significance with this one.

I don’t really see why this matters. It wouldn’t be the first time a cabinet member has left the white house to run for public office. The republicans are certainly interested in keeping a senate seat as well. I wish him luck, I think it is going to be tough for anyone with an R next to their name, even in a safe place like Nebraska.

    I hope he loses !!

I see something on his resume that might be a red flag…

Going to be a sad and sorry 2008 for the Grand Old Perverts if they can’t hold onto Hagel’s seat.

  9. Hemlock for Gadflies says:

I’m not so sure this is that important. A Republican was bound to run for the seat. And it’s not uncommon for secretaries to resign in the last years of an administration. I guess the question for Nebraskans is whether or not he was another Brownie appointment or if he actually knows something about agriculture.

  10. FREAKHEAD says:

I sent this story in b/c I hadn’t seen it nationally yet. This is going to be a quite a race. I think Democrats have a real chance at getting this seat back. Let’s hope we can get a real progressive to step forward but we may have to stick by Bob Kerry if no one else stands out.

  11. jbruch says:

I think Johanns is crazy to immediately run for office after leaving Washington. The opportunity for any opponent to use Johanns’ prior proximity to the president is just too tempting.

  12. FREAKHEAD says:

I just wanted to quickly comment on Hemlocks post. This is actually really important. Nebraska can go back to blue in 2008. Although our Senators are typically very ( I ), Bob Kerry ( D) will probably run. He was gov, then senator, war hero, and on the 911 Panel.

Nebraska, historically, has had a strong Democratic presence in the Senate. I believe Hagel is the longest a (R) has been in the Senate for quite some time. 1 more for the (D) can’t hurt.

More evidence that politics is more important than policy in America.

  14. Zimzone says:

As one of the most important bills facing us, the Agriculture Bill, is moving toward resolution, the Sec of Ag resigns?

What’s more important than that? One’s career, apparently.

I have to give Johanns some credit, though. He’s a Hell of a lot better than Bush’s other one; Ann Venom. She was a total loser, over her head completely and didn’t give a tinker’s dam about agriculture.

Hmmm, maybe that’s why she was appointed!

  15. Arne Langsetmo says:

What a resume: Secretary of Agriculture in the Dubya maladministration.

That ought to be enough to disqualify him right out of hand…..

    Cheers,

It may be a bug in the system, or it may be TP getting rid of descent. Whatever. You had a site that had open debate, now you don’t .

Yeah, flagging the RW trolls was getting rid of “descent”. Otherwise known as atavism (not “open debate”). And things look a lot better in here. Sit back and enjoy. Next stoopid comment gets you an abuse flag too.

    Cheers,
