Rep. King: There Are ‘Too Many Mosques In This Country,’ We Should ‘Infiltrate’ Islam»

In 2006, President Bush appeared alongside then-House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Peter King (R-NY) and heaped praise on the Congressman, calling him a “strong, strong chairman” who was “doing a fine job to help us protect this country.”

The Politico reports today that King, now ranking member on the Committee, is continuing his “strong, strong” measures to “protect” the United States by directly attacking Muslims. In a recent interview, King said:

Unfortunately, we have too many mosques in this country. There are too many people who are sympathetic to radical Islam. We should be looking at them more carefully. We should be finding out how we can infiltrate. […]

I think there’s been a lack of full cooperation from too many people in the Muslim community. And it’s a real threat here in this country.

Watch it:

Throughout his tenure in Congress, King has stereotyped and launched racist attacks at Muslim-Americans:

“[Y]ou could say that 80-85 percent of mosques in this country are controlled by Islamic fundamentalists.” [LINK]

“I know of any number of mosques in New York…where there are radicals in there.” [LINK]

Muslims are “an enemy living amongst us.” [LINK]

Muslims’ “ideology of extremism has been spread to the youth and the new generation.” [LINK]

“They won’t turn in their own. They won’t tell what’s going on in the mosques. They won’t come forward and cooperate with the police.” [LINK]

Gen. John Abizaid recently stated, “the battle of words is meaningful, especially in the Middle East to people.” With members of Congress like Peter King, we continue to lose that battle.

Digg It!

UPDATE: King responds: “The quote was taken entirely out of context by Politico. My position in this interview, as it has been for many years, is that too many mosques in this country do not cooperate with law enforcement. Unfortunately, Politico was incapable of making this distinction.”

This is the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave I fought for?

  2. Badmoodman Says:

Ya know, you can easily substitute Republican for Islamist in King’s quotes and there’s no difference.

  3. RUCerious Says:

Maybe they should hire some of the discharged gay Arabic interpreters to “infiltrate” the mosques.

    Jackasses.

  4. RUCerious Says:

Has the term XianoFascist been coined yet?

well if he was serious about there being too many he could simply stop isuing tens of thousands of h1b visas. case closed. dumbasses.

  6. MapleStreet Says:

    RUCerious -

Somehow I get the idea that according to King, #4 would be a wonderful ideal. That way the Muslims would get infected with the “don’t ask, don’t tell” gene.

OK, I get that there has been some friction between Islam and Christianity. I get that to most people in the US that Islam is some sort of scary black box that the boogie man is going to jump out of.

But trying to reconcile this with freedom of religion; trying to reconcile the extreme logic of some Islams are terrorists therefore all Islam is terrorist; and the thought of NY trying to look like the worst ignorant biggot. This I don’t get.

  7. MapleStreet Says:

Oh, I should have added, I get that a large part of the fundamentalist repub base probably has a negative opinion of Islam.

What we must fight for is to safeguard the existence and reproduction of our race and our people, the sustenance of our children and the purity of our blood

Due to his own original special nature, the Jew cannot possess a religious institution

the personification of the devil as the symbol of all evil assumes the living shape of the Jew.

    Sound familiar?

  11. Clyde the Ripper Says:

“They won’t turn in their own. They won’t tell what’s going on in the mosques. They won’t come forward and cooperate with the police.”

Change “mosques” to “The White-house” and “police” to “anybody” and you have a perfect description of the bushco. And one bushco is certainly too many for this Country.

  12. Mugsy Says:

Just IMAGINE the howls of protest if this were Iran talking about Christian churches.

  13. OptimisticFool Says:

No doubt. I forgot that religious freedom only applies to Christians.

To be fair, though, this is the country where the FBI decided they better put undercover agents in Quaker peace groups in case they got out of hand.

I don’t think this world(or this governemt) needs any more paranoid religious or racial intolerance.

  17. missmolly Says:

King says that 80 to 85 percent of mosques in this country are controlled by Muslim fundamentalists. How did he arrive at this figure? And what, exactly, does he consider to be a “Muslim fundamentalist”?

If he uses this term correctly, a “Muslim fundamentalist” would be someone who adheres to the fundamentals of Islam (just as a Christian fundamentalist is someone who adheres to the basic fundamentals of Christianity).

The Muslim “fundamentals” would be the five pillars of faith, which are 1) belief that there is no god but God Himself and that Muhammed is His messenger, 2) to pray five times daily, 3) to give charity, 4) to fast during the month of Ramadan, and 5) to make a pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in one’s lifetime.

Imams would generally fall in this category of “fundamentalists”, otherwise they would probably be in some other line of work. This certainly doesn’t mean they are terrorists, or are harboring terrorists.

On the other hand, if King uses “Muslim fundamentalist” to mean “terrorist” (and it appears by the alarming tone of his statement that he’s working very hard to make that implication), I doubt seriously that the number of mosques controlled by terrorists comes anywhere close to 80 to 85 percent. (has King ever actually BEEN in a mosque?)

King is just sounding like another Joseph McCarthy wannabe. The sad thing is if people use his ignorant ravings to support their own bigotry.

  18. missmolly Says:

“They won’t tell what’s going on in the mosques.” — Rep. Peter King

I’ve been in mosques. I’ve seen what goes on in mosques. Lots of prayer, mostly. Is King afraid of prayer?

    Oh my god!

  20. Krazny Says:

I especially like that he uses the “You could say” tag on one of the quotes. You could say a lot of things, it doesn’t make them true. These type of statements to appeal to the base, who believe all Muslims are terrorists bent on killing them and converting their children.

  21. DigDug Says:

  22. Candyce Says:

There are an estimated 400,000 churches in America, and 1209 mosques.

Just thought I’d put that in perspective a little.

  23. VerbalKint Says:

King is a certifiable nutcase, not to mention a hate-filled xenophobe and racist, as proved by his own words. When will the GOP repudiate his profoundly un-American conduct?

P.S. I’m not holding my breath.

  24. impeachcheneythenbush Says:

Yes, Terry the Turtle, that quote DOES sound familiar. The kind of speech Rep. King is indulging himself in is the exact type of rhetoric that led to the attempted genocide of the Jews in Europe. What’s truly amazing to me is that our good Senator Lieberman doesn’t seem to be able to recognize the type of “humans” he insists upon supporting in the Senate. I think I’m going to start calling him “Kapo” Lieberman.

    ——————————————————————————–

“The German concentration camps depended on the cooperation of trustee inmates who supervised the prisoners. Known as Kapos, these trustees carried out the will of the Nazi camp commandants and guards, and were often as brutal as their SS counterparts. Some of these Kapos were Jewish, and even they inflicted harsh treatment on their fellow prisoners. For many, failure to perform their duties would have resulted in severe punishment and even death, but many historians view their actions as a form of complicity. After the war, the prosecution of Kapos as war criminals, particularly those who were Jewish, created an ethical dilemma which continues to this day.”

  25. Abby Says:

LOL. Most conquerers and Empires succeed by using the true and tried method of “divide and conquer”. Even when the “enemy” was one monolithic block, the British found a way to divide them into inter fighting fractions and conquered most of the world that way.

Along comes the most moronic Empire builders History has even known, from the Land of a people so Great that they never needed to learn anything from History, not even their own, who think the way to go is to unite these different fractions from all over the planet into one single block of the “enemy”.

Good luck people. We’re all going to need it.

Can anyone blame the Muslin country for their feelings about what we’re doing to them. Blackwater are the White House hired killers and since the invasion these killers have killed thousands of innocent Iraq woman/children without blinking an eye. Remember the sharp shooters that were called in when Pat Tillman was killed yes the hired contract killer. America has a history of how it treats others who are different in color and religion. Yes we worked hard and we’ve learned but we allow the Axis of Evil to steal the White House and he brought with him his followers of both parties. Now we are willing to sit back and let this happen, even saying we will bomb Iran. Yes we are willing to keep killing innocent Muslims because we are following a murders name Bush/Cheney.

  34. Wayne Says:

Unbelievable the religious bigotry of these Christian Nazis.

If someone pointed the same bigoted words towards christians these people would be frothing at the mouth.

After King takes care of American muslums, he will be after buddists, jews, hindus, and every non christian religion.
Then the hate-mongers will go after christians of a different faction/sect from them.

  35. chasemonster Says:

  36. James Saville Row Says:

    AI YAI YAI!

This is extremely dangerous and mercurially inciteful talk from someone who should know better. Rep King should be asked to repudiate his inflamatory statements. The percentage of the “bad egg”, “radical”, “terrorist” fringe of the Islamic population compared to “main line” Islam is so ridiculously small as to be laughable.

Does Rep. King consider how his statements is playing in their minds of lot of Muslims who not only hold legal US Citizenship but have commended themselves within the bounds of the law?

What is happening to this country? Everywhere you turn, there seems to a lot of hatred flying around. This cannot be healthy-feeling no matter what political, religious affiliations you belong to. There should be an immediate redefinition of terms, clarification of understanding and reintegration of tolerance into the public debate. The apparent direction this seems to be going cannot be sounding like good music to anyone’s ears.

“helenahandbasket”, your pseudonym has it perfect. This is getting weirder by the day. More reason to re-evaluate the impact of religion in politics and take adequate steps to de-emphasize this impact and reincorporate all and sundry into a single idea of togetherness under the umbrella of “State” and NOT “church”.

( I should never have to listen to any christian hypocrite preach to me, violating my freedom from religion)

From my perspective there is no true faith, because all of the tenants were actually written by man and not any god.

  39. Veritas Says:

Hi Wayne: Yes, the tenets were all man made and revised with each interpretation and edition. Depending upon the climate of the time they were written from Aramaic to Greek, much was reinterpreted. My feeling is that if the book works to bring some semblance of a guideline for living life according to the Golden Rule, so be it. It’s full of great allegories, stories, and parables from which many people receive much insight. I, myself, prefer to read it metaphysically in order to even begin to apply it to my life. Frankly, with the myriad of interpretations of it overall, how can anyone purport to be reading the “real bible” in the first place. Biblical scholars agree that the actual writing and interpretations were largely predicated on the prevailing politics of the time as well so ???

  40. Veritas Says:

And we all know that women were considered to be “second class citizens” back then; ergo the elimination of the Gospel of Mary Magdalene. I rest my case.

Don’t look for the GOP to “out” and condemn their own extremists. To paraphrase King: I think there’s been a lack of full cooperation from too many people in the GOP community. And it’s a real threat here in this country. Republicans’ ideology of extremism has been spread to the youth and the new generation. They won’t turn in their own. They won’t tell what’s going on in the GOP caucus rooms. They won’t come forward and cooperate…

  73. _corrupted_ Says:

everyone here is mis informed on the historicity of either judaism , christianity and islam.

for the most part, the majority of you are acolytes of the church of the american constituion. you’re religious either way: whether clinging to a paper written by the forefathers of the US or to words & books possibly divinely inspired.

learn more about the actual content of the koran, it’s political/religious history and the “patriarch(s)” behind it’s genesis. actually go research it for a change and if you’re not too scare (i doubt any of you have the balls though) to discuss the true writings that is mostly ignored by the vast majority of culturally professed “muslims”.

hate Christianity and its followers all you want. doesn’t make you any better or more fulfilled because your hate won’t ever subside.

the amount of good done where christians have adhered and acted upon the true callings of their faith far out numbers the bad performed in the same name. i take it when 3 or 4 dems do wrong, all dems do wrong and same goes for reps right? oh, wait…dems never do anything wrong…gahhhhhhhtcha…right. noone remembers any good you do only the bad.

nowhere in judaism or christianity does God rely on the death and destruction of others as a means of converting. don’t try and sight all the wars and bloodshed in the old testament as stories of conversion. read it again…the children of Israel were SET A-PART. they weren’t sent in to convert or impose the God of Abraham on others. They were to remain SET A-PART.

if a muslim did the Oklahoma bombing, they wouldn’t be acting in accordance with what their Allah through his prophet Muhammed commands. when a christian does what happened at Oklahoma or the Twin Towers, it flies in the face of the very faith they proclaim.

most of you here appear to be far more literate than this…come on. This is kids’ stuff. quit echoing propoganda and spread unbiased truth.
