Migration reshaping ‘Iraq’s sectarian landscape.’»

New data collected by relief workers shows that a “vast internal migration is radically reshaping Iraq’s ethnic and sectarian landscape.” From The New York Times:

The migration data, which are expected to be released this week by the Iraqi Red Crescent Organization but were given in advance to The New York Times, indicate that in Baghdad alone there are now nearly 170,000 families, accounting for almost a million people, that have fled their homes in search of security, shelter, water, electricity, functioning schools or jobs to support their families.

The figures show that many families move twice, three times or more, first fleeing immediate danger and then making more considered calculations based on the availability of city services or schools for their children. Finding neighbors of their own sect is just one of those considerations. […]

Although Iraqis of every income level, sect, ethnicity and region of the country have been caught up in this migration, perhaps the most tragic consequences turn up where enormous numbers of poor Iraqi villagers have collected in camps, shantytowns and urban slums after leaving behind almost everything they owned, said Dr. Said Hakki, a physician who is the president of the Red Crescent.

Well, I’m sure glad that Chimpy heeded the voices in his head and “liberated” Iraq from that meanie Saddam.

    </snark>

/sarc on / And from these camps will rise yet another generation of killers. good work america. /sarc off/

We’ve recreated South Africa during the Apartheid years!!

Iraq is working with the Israelis towards the Nuke? Shiver me timbers, that be a frightening thought.

  5. Clyde the Ripper Says:

The most upsetting part of this occurrence is the parallel that can be drawn in this Country in the wake of hurricane Katrina. The last paragraph can be rewritten as follows to portray the bushco response, particularly in New Orleans:

Although AMERICANS of every income level, sect, ethnicity and region of the country have been caught up in this migration, perhaps the most tragic consequences turn up where enormous numbers of poor BLACKS have collected in camps, shantytowns and urban slums after leaving behind almost everything they owned.

    Operation Iraqi Liberation (Freedom): ACCOMPLISHED.

“Iraqi citizens. You are now liberated to get the F out of your own country!”

    Hey, isn’t forced democracy fun???

  7. Badmoodman Says:

The figures show that many families move twice, three times or more… - - BushCo will site this and expect you to believe that this is good news for the entrepeneurs who run moving companies.

And we’re spending a fortune paying Blackwater to kill innocent civilians. Now THAT’s winning hearts and minds!

  10. Wilco Says:

Squeege, reading your comments, it’s as though this were a day in which one were to speak as would a pirate
    Yeeaargh!

  11. Veritas Says:

Imagine being run out of your own home several times due to our meddling in Iraq?? Wow!

  12. Veritas Says:

ClydeTheRipper: Just insert “New Orleans” in this scenario and the parallels are frightening. This is still a huge black mark on the BushCo. He lied to the citizens of New Orleans, didn’t get water to them in 5 days because he was on vacation, and it’s time to tell this president to take an “early vacation” of some 500 days right now.

IMPEACH BUSH & CHENEY before they can destroy more of this world.

  13. Pete Bogs Says:

as long as “finding neighbors of (one’s) own sect” is important no one will ever be safe… we have to learn to live in peace alongside people who are not like us… the word is “tolerance”

  14. DRxJ Says:

    CaptainMantastic,
nice paragraphs (snark), wrong thread. You might have a better chance at receiving an answer to your strawmen if you asked on the open thread below.

Now, back on topic, how do you feel about the almost 1 million Iraqi citizens that have had to leave because of no electricity, no food, not water, all brought on by Operation Iraqi Liberation.

  16. bob h Says:

Here’s why I ask. Regardless whether he deserves any credit, under Bush, we haven’t had a significant domestic terror attack since 9/11 (when most Americans realized that jihadists were at war with the U.S.)

And the police are responsible for that, not the military or gwb. try again.

  17. bob h Says:

also, osama bin ladin was roundly criticized by al qaeda around the world for his attacks in the usa. why? because it led to things like afghanistan getting pounded.

so you see the terrists arent stupid….another 9/11 and they KNOW its all over for them. THAT is why big things havent happened here in the usa.

  18. Veritas Says:

Captain Manastic: Wrong thread and wrong headset. Just because something “didn’t occur” certainly doesn’t evolve into a sense of safety and security when our borders are horrendously wide open. Does Bush really believe that the only criminals entering illegally are mexicans in search of employment? If so, I’ve got some prime swampland in Louisians to sell him and you. Your argument holds no logical ground.

Sure, no other false flag operations have been permitted to be carried out since the people have become educated to these fascist tactics. This is not to say that we are “safer” by any stretch of the imagination.

  19. Veritas Says:

Cap’n: Wrong thread and skewed logic as well.

  20. Veritas Says:

I find it utterly amazing how Republicans are so willing to submerge their head in the sand while their party and everything their president touches turns to crap before their very eyes.

I believe this is the definition of “delusion”.

  21. Marie Says:

Is this not a form of ethnic cleansing? People feeling so threatened that they leave their homes?
Certain neighborhoods in Iraq are touted as having lower violence statistics — well if the targeted people are leaving in droves wouldn’t that account for a drop in killings?
We have fought the sunnis, then armed them as they purge the shiites.
Meanwhile tens of thousands of Iraqi citizens who are true victims of our “liberation” (or whatever is the current slogan for our illegal invasion) are left homeless, without basic human necessities.
I am ashamed of my country.
I acknowledge that things may get even worse, and that the warmongers will blame the anti-war people, but if the general public has any intelligence at all they will recognize that the real guilty parties are Bush&Co.
I hope I live long enough to see a reversal of the enormous harm done by Bush&Co — I am not sure that I will.

yeah. itis ‘part’ of ethnic cleansing.

    ***yes.

    *** yes

    ***70%of us ar already there.

  26. Bush is a four letter word Says:

They’re 5 miles high as the crow flies
Leavin’ vapour trails against a blood red sky
Movin’ in from the east toward the west
With balaclava helmets over their heads, yes!

But if you think that jesus christ is coming
Honey you’ve got another thing coming
If he ever finds out who’s hi-jacked his name
He’ll cut out his heart and turn in his grave

    Islam is rising
    The christians mobilising
The world is on it’s elbows and knees
It’s forgotten the message and worships the creeds

It’s war, she cried, it’s war, she cried, this is war
Drop your possessions, all you simple folk
You will fight them on the beaches in your underclothes
You will thank the good lord for raising the union jack
You’ll watch the ships out of harbour
And the bodies come floating back

If the real jesus christ were to stand up today
He’d be gunned down by the c.i.a.
Oh, the lights that now burn brightest behind stained glass
Will cast the darkest shadows upon the human heart
But God didn’t build himself that throne
God doesn’t live in israel or rome
God belong to the yankee dollar
God doesn’t plant the bombs for hezbollah
God doesn’t even go to church
And God won’t send us down to allah to burn
No, God will remind us what we already know
That the human race is about to reap what it’s sown

The world is on it’s elbows and knees
It’s forgotten the message and worships the creeds
    Armageddon days are here again

  27. Alejandro Says:

But wasn’t that the plan all along? Split up Iraq into three separate regions based on ethnicity/religion? That way it could never be the regional power it could be based on its wealth. This is no surprise.
