FBI secretly recorded Sen. Stevens’s calls.

The FBI secretly taped telephone calls between Alaska oil contractor Bill Allen and Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK) as part of a “public corruption sting.” The new revelation suggests that “the Justice Department was eyeing Stevens long before June, when the Republican senator first publicly acknowledged he was under scrutiny.”

    Warrant? No warrant?

    Hmmmm.....

  3. Jim Says:

Who cares about warrants? Warrants are for wimps.

  4. dlet Says:

Good point Sean. The way the Justice Department is run there could possibly be a "mistake" in the procedures that although there are serious laws broken Stevens will go scot-free on a technicality.

  5. Zooey Says:

I have a bad feeling about it, Sean.

Our institutions have gone a bit lax in their procedures since the admin seems to turn a blind eye to Constitutional protections.

This whole thing could be thrown out of court.

  20. Gregor Samsa Says:

Well, since common decency and respect for human rights is now deemed "pre-9/11 mind set", I propose we let the Abu Ghraib guards get their hands on Stevens.

Their sentences will be reduced if they can get "actionable intelligence" out of him. His confession, of course, will be admissible in court, his sentence irrevocable, his detention arbitrarily long, and he will have no right to Habeas Corpus.

After all, his corruption might jeopardise national security, and could help terrorists.

I, too, have a bad feeling about this. I wouldn't put it past the Bush Crime Family to direct the FBI or some other investigating authority to purposely do something that will result in the charges being thrown out and Stevens walking away scott free.

OT but worth it. We have seen much ado from the trolls about HSU.

Well, lets see about Romneys HSU, Fabian:
Republican Mitt Romney’s list of bundlers until recently included Alan Fabian, who was charged in a 23-count indictment last month alleging mail fraud, money laundering, bankruptcy fraud, perjury and obstruction of justice, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Baltimore. Fabian’s lawyer, David B. Irwin, has declined to comment about the merits of the case but told The Post last month: “We are hoping for an early resolution of the matter.”

Doing well, school is busy. You don't need a wordpress blog, you need a wordpress log in password. It's confusing, because I think you go to the same place, but it will let you create just a log in account. Easy as pie. ;)

  47. Chocolate Jesus Says:

an illegally tapped phone is not a get out of jail free card. at best, the phone conversations, and any evidence that results from them will be supressed.. if they have other evidence against stevens, the case will stand, regardless of whether the phone convos are allowed in or not...

plus, the motion to supress would be a matter of public record, which would probably end stevens carreer, at the very least..

  48. Max-1 Says:

    Tell me they had warrants.

It would be disappointing if they didn't, but who would be surprised with the current three ring circus we're witnessing.

  49. TripMaster Monkey Says:

Why the hell would they need warrants? The don't seem to need warrants to eavesdrop on the rest of us poor slobs.

It doesn't matter...the absence of habeas corpus from our law means that quibbling about the legality of warrantless wiretapping is like making an argument about whether a hatch on a boat should be closed or open, while the entire bottom of the boat is missing.

  50. Pete Bogs Says:

well, I guess some secret wiretaps are ok - the ones done on corrupt Republicants...

  51. Veritas Says:

Stevens' overt corruption was such an obvious problem for the GOP which is why they decided to wiretap him. He was doing serious damage to their image with his blatant illegal activities that they had to do something to squelch the laughter on the sidelines as well as get him out of their limelight. All I could see was one sick, cantankerous battle axe whose senile dementia was affecting his censoring area in his brain and who was "outing" the tactics of himself and his party quite handily. He could be the poster child for the 'contemporary mafioso' for goodness sakes.

  52. Veritas Says:

Hi Trip! You're right! When has a measly warrant stopped them? Besides, they have the defacto warrant which they could easily obtain since this guy's corruption is so legion. Why let something like a "legal warrant" stop them when it never has before?

  53. Veritas Says:

But you can bet that if they did not have warrants in this case, it will become another Repuke "dog and pony show" but this time americans will not be watching. We've "had enough" of the nonsensical chicanery of this GOP and white house to last us a lifetime.

As we have been saying here, everyone is fair game now, just glad to see the chickens come home to sh!t (roost) on the Repugs head, too, seeing that Teddy Boy voted for the illegal wiretapping and Haebeus Corpus.

Plus it couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

  56. Roger_Roger Says:

They did all this and yet haven't done anything to Stevens. Seems like he would be in jail already if these phone calls amounted to anything. If he is guilty, the bastard should rot in a jail cell for sure. Currently, he is innocent until proven guilty in my book.
