Long-term presence in Iraq = trillions in taxpayer dollars.

“A new Congressional study finds that President Bush’s plans for the U.S. in Iraq over the next several decades will reach the trillions of dollars, on top of the approximately $567 billion the war has already cost.” The cost of maintaining a ‘Korea-like’ presence in Iraq over the next 50 years could exceed $2 trillion. Danger Room’s Noah Shachtman has more.

If you recall, the Bin Laden tape released just before the 9/11 attack stated that his goal was to bankrupt the US.

Advocating the violent overthrow of our government, and/or threatening the President of the United States, is against the law.

I know we’re supposed to be polite and nicy-nicy on the new TP, but this is just flat-out an IDIOTIC comment. Where the F does this fool come up w/ this stuff? NO ONE is talking “violent overthrow” here, but J.

  6. kerryinalaska says:

None of this is funded at this time, isn’t that right? Not one dollar is paid for, it’s all credit as I understand it. Which means that our childrens children will still be paying for this fiasco. Sure, the GOP stands for fiscal responsibility. Of course it does. Until a chance for profit war comes along.

  7. LibertyLover says:

GW Bush is a success! Iraq will be a much better money boondoggle than his Brother Neil’s Savings and Loan Debacle of the 80’s that cost tapayers $1.4 trillion.

With the revocation of habeas corpus, do you really think that matters anymore, Shakey?

  9. Krazny says:

Funny bit is, this country was started due to a violent overthrow of the existing government. The revolutionary war was not a clean conflict. There is also a belief by some, that when a government has become immoral and unethical, it is time to throw them off in favor of a government that will rule with justice.

Jake you do more here to convince people to abandon your party than a 100 left wing bloggers.Your a christian who likes war and torture ,a patriot who has no problem with the loss of the most basic rights guaranteed under the constitution.
Keep up the good work .I hope they pay you well for this .

If your charged by mistake for a crime of which you are innpocent ,after the loss of Habeas corpus you will rot in the kings dungeon .No day in court ,and you actually support that ?And you expect to be taken seriously ?

As for being taken seriously, I don’t expect that any more than Stephen Colbert

Ahh, so you’re merely doing a satirical impression of a mouthbreathing, jackbooted, goosestepping neocon apologist?

That would explain why so many of your posts are so recursively satirical.

I am also upset that the U.S. is slowly becoming a fascist state ; )

Oh yes, you seem to be so upset…

Your posts to date would belie this assertion even if you had not qualified it with your little winky smiley-face.

As the law now stands Jake ,in thre hands of any future president American citizens have no rights under our constitution .

  24. freeman says:

But you trust george bush or so you said yesterday , despite the fact that the lead up to war was an obvious con job and has taken the lives of 3/4 of a million people ,wounded several times that ,and is being run by oil exec’c who wrote pre 911 of their intention to invade the mid east to control the developing world .WAR CRIMES !
I don’t think much of our bought and paid for Democratic representitives either ,but I have gone on record and repeatedly said so ,where as your statements seem obviously republican ,whatever your calling yourself .

Generations of TRUE Americans have died and struggled to attain and defend these rights which you are throwing away ! No one wants our country to collapse or be attacked but some seem to have no problem with our doing these things to other sovereign nations ! Atleast half of the old testament is an indictment against racism ! Does your God advocate raping ,pillaging and slavery ,because the god of the old testament does .

Thats the real “blow-back” of the modern era. these spooks have plied their trade for decades overseas, and now they are it bringing back onto US soil. they have suddenly realised that their methods of manipulating foriegn states and governments are just as easily applied on home turf.
what people must realise is that there is a (rogue) network of military/political/intelligence/economic elite that have turned their decades old ways on their own country. Their only motivations are money and power. they are anti-democratic, anti-rights, anti-liberty. None of these things are required for their version of capitalism, which is marxism with shinier cars.
