Senators Who Forced Debate On MoveOn Ad Earlier Complained Of ‘Wasting Time On Empty Resolutions’»

cornynad3.jpg Today, the Senate voted 72-25 to approve Sen. John Cornyn’s (R-TX) bill criticizing MoveOn.org’s Gen. David Petraeus ad in the New York Times. The “sense of the Senate” resolution “strongly” condemns the “personal attacks on the honor and integrity of General Petraeus.”

Rep. Tom Davis (R-VA) has now called for an investigation into “possible elections violations by the New York Times for selling an advertisement to the liberal group MoveOn.org at a reduced rate.”

Neither Cornyn’s resolution nor Davis’s investigation have any bearing on the course in Iraq. The senators who today voted for Cornyn’s bill have previously chastised the Senate for engaging in “a colossal waste of time” on “empty” and “meaningless resolutions.” Some examples:

On Iraq debates/resolutions:

“Mr. President, we have nearly finished this little exhibition, which was staged, I assume, for the benefit of a briefly amused press corps and in deference to political activists opposed to the war.” [Sen. John McCain, 7/18/07]

“We have just seen a procedure in the last 24 hours that was a colossal waste of time.” [Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA), 7/18/07]

“I want an open and honest debate, and not political posturing. I was sent here to take action, not waste time on non-binding and empty resolutions.” [Sen. Craig Thomas (R-WY), 2/23/07]

On the Gonzales vote of no confidence:

“[W]e ended up…spending our time on a meaningless resolution giving the president advice about who the attorney general ought to be.” [Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), 6/12/07]

“This is a very disappointing spectacle here today.” [Sen. Trent Lott (R-MS), 6/12/07]

On general partisanship:

“They’ve wasted the first seven months by being excessively partisan and creating unnecessary, in my view, disputes with a pretty robust minority of 49.” [Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), 7/25/07]

“The way that they have proceeded, I am not sure that you can count on anything getting done, even those things that look like a fairly certain bet.” [Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ), 7/25/07]

Evidently, it’s not a partisan waste of time to condemn an advocacy group for a New York Times ad.

Move Ons Ad was not disgusting… Bush commiting FRAUD by using FRAUDLANT yellow cake documents and blatantly lying to the American people … lies that led to the deaths of thousand apon thousands of people… THAT is disgusting…

A general that LIES to the American people and the Congress THAT is shameful… did Paetraus “betray America”? Not really… Did he betray his duty to defend the Constitution? Well that is not really what he is doing in Iraq is it? Did he LIE to the American people and BETRAY our trust? Absolutely… He betrayed our trust… and for what? His political views? His “loyalty” to the bushies? Is he a rightwing nutter? I dont know why his “facts” are so doctored Enron style… but the fact remains he lied… May Move On should have said General “LiedToUs” instead of BetrayedUs… Non the less the Senate are a bunch of cowards.

I honestly have given up here.

No matter the public outcry, it seems like our leaders in Washington have totally sold us out in slavish devotion to this war. Yes, many Democrats voted for the Boxer resolution, but there was no excuse for this vote even having to be voted upon, nor the ridiculous ‘agreement’ that forced the Boxer resolution and the Webb amendment to require 60 votes minimum. The Republicans are gaming votes, and the Democrats are tacitly allowing them to do this.

I give up. We’ve lost the Republic, because we don’t have anyone in power left who will actually fight for the public outcries against the idiocies that have been thrust upon us.

They are NOT anti-troop, and I’m so tired of hearing fools like you claim so. The US military is not the Boy Emperor’s personal play toy, nor is it meant to be a front for the Blackwater goon squads roaming Iraq q/out supervision or oversight.

1st off ; Harry Reid voted “nay” , so your statement about “Dem leadership” is just another lie from out your stupid mouth (no surprise there).

2nd Any criticism of 1 individual is not an indictment of an entire group ; it is the same nonsense you GOP/Chimpy rim licking douchebags claimed when your hero Chimpy was/is justifiably criticized , and you all respond(ed) to those responsible as being “traitors/anti-American/terrorist sympathizers” or any other idiotic moniker you tried to use……….It was bullshit then , as it is now.

    Facist Amerika is here….

  34. 1st Republic 14th Star Says:

Democrats NEVER learn. NEVER repeat your opponent’s talking points, and NEVER agree with them.

The smart thing to have done would have been to filibuster a vote on the Cornyn resolution, followed by a resolution condemning John McCain, John Cornyn and others for being so willing to ignore the Constitutional right of free speech, followed by a resolution condemning Petraeus for LYING HIS ASS OFF!

Congressional Democrats seem compelled to compromise and negotiate and appear moderate, for fear they’ll lose elections in otherwise. In fact, their current wishy-washy actions are what’s likely to cost them elections — as Republicans know, even if you’re wrong, if you appear strong, you can often carry your point. In this case it should be even easier for Democrats because they’re RIGHT. Instead, they let republicans set the agenda and frame the debate time after time.

I note that Republicans are AGAINST non-binding resolutions, unless a Republican introduces them. I note that Republicans are AGAINST filibusters, except when a Republican initiates it. How come the so called liberal media and the Democrats don’t mention this blatant hypocrisy?

Until Democrats realize that they’re RIGHT and they have the MAJORITY and they have NOTHING to fear at the ballot box by being as anti-Bush and anti-Iraq war as possible, we’re doomed to keep replaying this Groundhog Day scene over and over and over and over…

Moveon is a distraction. And the general is just one more in a long line of water carriers for the failed policies of the Bush Administration. The issue is the war, and the thing is, voting for this garbage does absolutely nothing about ending it.

What MoveOn hasn’t told you is that the “General Betray-Us” moniker isn’t their invention. It’s been reported in the British press to be coined by a retired General.

Critics, including one recently retired general, are privately calling him “General Betraeus” on the grounds that he is too ambitious to deliver a balanced report on the war.

But, the Democrats in Congress didn’t take the time to look past the baseless finger pointing and elementary name-calling. Instead, they gave in to cowardly instinct and said a big “F@*# YOU” to the millions of Americans who call themselves a part of the Netroots Movement and have worked side by side with MoveOn to end the War.

What is it about “conservatives” that they’ve given up on the Bill of Rights? MoveOn has used their constitutional right for free speech and published their opinion of the “Petraeus Report” and its lack of objectivity and the Senate should condemn them for doing so?

Shouldn’t the Senate also condemn the various pontificators of FoxNews for their opinons? Shouldn’t the Senate condemn people like Bill O’Reilly for regularly and viciously slandering public and private figures alike?

You forgot to mention how they use the military like indentured servants to front for the Blackwater goon squads that roam Iraq w/ no oversight, get paid 4 times as much as the soldiers, and get to come and go when they want. No enforced 15 month stays for them, I’ll wager.

Wanna bet that if and when the Iraqi govt finally signs the oil-sharing agreements, the gloves come off totally and then the blood REALLY flows, until no one’s left to complain?

  69. ecthompson Says:

Democrats without a spine. I really, really don’t like them.

Why would any Democrat point to MoveOn.org and say anything. They should have killed this in committee.

  70. Marie Says:

    Obama’s statement:

“The focus of the United States Senate should be on ending this war, not on criticizing newspaper advertisements. This amendment was a stunt designed only to score cheap political points while what we should be doing is focusing on the deadly serious challenge we face in Iraq. It’s precisely this kind of political game-playing that makes most Americans cynical about Washington’s ability to solve America’s problems. By not casting a vote, I registered my protest against this empty politics. I registered my views on the ad itself the day it appeared.

“All of us respect the service of General Petraeus and all of our brave men and women in uniform. The way to honor that service is to give them a mission that is responsible, not to vote on amendments like the Cornyn amendment while we continue to pursue the wrong policy in Iraq.”

Personally, I don’t find fault with his comments. What would have happened if ALL the Democrats had refused to vote on it?

  71. Chocolate Jesus Says:

    >The complaint says Hsu

Got any fresh updates about the former senators found guilty of taking bribes from Abramhoff cronies?

Are any of them democrats yet?

Oh, and Exley, question fer ya…

    http://www.cnn.com/ 2007/ POLITICS/ 09/ 20/ bush.petraeus/ index.html

” The Democrats on Thursday failed to pass their resolution. It included a condemnation of the “unwarranted personal attack” on Petraeus, but also condemned “personal attacks” that happened in 2002 against then-Democratic Sen. Max Cleland of Georgia and attacks in 2004 against Sen. John Kerry. The vote was 51-46, but 60 votes were needed to proceed.”

I take it you support the democratic amendment as well, right Exley?

Oh, and arming our enemimes.. betrayal? yes or no?

  72. Jackie Says:

American don’t complain what the GOP does. It’s not important to the White House/GOP/Americans that 3 soldiers died today while the vote was made about MoveOn.org. We see what’s more important now. I wish Americans would be as angry with our elected leaders not protecting our troops as Americans are about Vick killing a dog. But I guess dogs mean more that our soldiers. The GOP/White House are busy stealing and don’t have time for the US economy or the lives of our troops.

  73. thegreathal Says:

Where was fake liberal Obama? Scared to vote. Was in the building to vote for the amendment previous, then ran out.

  74. Con10tious Says:

How is that so many people all the sudden get stupid about these things?

There us no comparing fellow soldier’s speaking out about Kerry’s actions in Vietnam or his publicity his seeking remarks before congress and movement.org’s slander of General Petraeus.

As for Max Cleland, by his own admission he never was a war hero that Democrats claimed following his senate seat lost. That whole canard arose as a way to blame Republicans for the voters decision to throw the bum out. Don’t see how that equates either, but I’m sure some ill informed twit of the likes of republic of stupidity, leftside annie or katy will yet again feign intelligence by asserting some other piece of movement.org’s crap as gospel!

  75. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

Gibson: “Dems are cowards. I won’t vote for them again.”

Gibson a little later: “Vote Ron Paul!”

    Gibson, you’re not fooling anyone.

I’d like to remind Exley and all others who think military leaders are above question that 10 years after the fact we found out the General Westmoreland sat there in front of congress and lied through his teeth talking up the war in Viet Nam. We’ve been through this before. Patraeus even wrote an op-ed for republicans and Bush before the 2004 election saying they were making great progress in Iraq. Patraeus is fair game. The fact that there were Dems who bowed to conservative media pressure to condemn the ad is almost irrelevant.

  76. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

Hey Ron, did you hear the one about Mitt Romney’s co-finance director being CONVICTED of fraud, money laundering and mail fraud? No? I’m not surprised. It’s someone who actually WORKS for Romney and it gets almost no press. Dems accept money from a guy they don’t even know who turns out to be a crook and it’s all over the media. That’s the liberal press for you, right?

  77. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

Con10tous: “There us no comparing fellow soldier’s speaking out about Kerry’s actions in Vietnam or his publicity his seeking remarks before congress and movement.org’s slander of General Petraeus.”

Yes, especially if you don’t know what you’re talking about. Kerry was personally asked by a number of Senators to go to the Winter Soldier conference and report back to the Senate what happened there and what was the nature of the testimony. He was testifying about WHAT OTHER SOLDIERS TESTIFIED at the congress to inform the Senate of its findings. The Swiftboat liars lied to you about that. And, they lied about being fellow soldiers. None of them worked with Kerry or on his boat. Every member of Kerry’s real crew supported him.

    F… YOU!!!! MORON!

  79. donnas Says:

This could be seen coming a mile away:

Rep. Tom Davis (R-VA) has now called for an investigation into “possible elections violations by the New York Times for selling an advertisement to the liberal group MoveOn.org at a reduced rate.”

Get them on the record denouncing the ad and then attempt to claim the ad violated the law. How could they not want an investigation if they condemn the ad?

It’s like watching the Road Runner and knowing the coyote will fall off the cliff every time.

I seem to remember that Rudy Giuliani received a discounted rate for his “I hate MoveOn” rebuttal ad. Maybe that should be investigated too?

How these people who so hate citizens, government and the rule of law continue to be elected in their states amazes me. They’re too transparent to be fooling the voters.

  80. ggibson1 Says:

Comment by Ret. Col. Jack Ripper

No need to fool anyone. Democrats have shown themselves to be exactly what the rightwingers have been calling them for a long time… cowards. They have had every opportunity to call out the bushies and we all have seen with disgrace how they just keep rolling over.

The GOP appears to be corrupt to the core so the republicans are all out except the one named Ron Paul. Hell Ron Paul can be believed for more than any democrat except an obvious few.

  81. The Republic of Stupidity Says:

You’d be wise to tone it down, but I know you won’t :-)

Try “telling the truth” and “making a real point”. You might find it refreshing and different.

Why do the truth and real points hate America so?

  82. rollotomasi Says:

Republicans are only following that sage advice: “Go with what you know.” What they know is pointing fingers; they sure as hell can’t govern.

  83. questioneverything Says:

Cornyn is so sure of his seat. He is up for re-election next year and yesterday voted against allowing an up-or-down vote on restoring Habeas Corpus. Is everyone in Texas brain dead or will he have opposition?

MCMetal, thanks for the “dishonor roll” of the 23 pukes who normally vote with the Senate Democratic majority.

Want to know what is saddest of all?

Conrad, Leahy, and Mikulski voted against the invasion of Iraq, and now they’ve gone all soft over a POLITICAL ADVERTISEMENT!

It’s heartbreaking to watch strong folks go weak!

    Comment by questioneverything — September 20, 2007 @ 10:47 pm

There are two Democrats opposing each other for the opportunity to oppose Cornyn: Rick Noriega (http://www.ricknoriega.com/) and Mikal Watts (http://wattsforsenate.com/). Either candidate makes Cornyn look like the slick, two-bit, sleezy, political hack that “Johnny, the crooked lawyer” has always been!

If you have ever been in the same room with the lizard, as I have, you want to take a bath to get clean. He is loathsome.

He makes the other crooked, corrupt, loathsome, NeoCon Texas senator look sane (barely) by comparison!

  89. donmyers Says:

Either they think we are stupid or they are completely incompetent. Maybe they are stupid and completely incompetent. But in the history of the US we have consistently started wars and sent our own people to their deaths for some greater cause. It is very sad but I truly believe that the strongest, the ones most capable of survival, know how to separate the flag waving venom from the truth and then react appropriately.

  90. Arne Langsetmo Says:

    #14 ggibson:

This cowardice of the democrats is exactly why I will NOT be voting for them next time…

Reward the good guys. Punish the bad ones. Double the reinforcement, double the fun.

    Cheers,

  91. Arne Langsetmo Says:

    #14 ggibson:

P.S.: Your reaction is precisely what the Republicans are hoping for and planning on. They want to try and fracture the Democratic party, and get enough people pissed at the party as a whole. Change is not impossible; witness Lamont. Too bad Connecticut went Republican after that, but the eedjits there that enabled that will have to deal with their own conscience. Maybe that will be a lesson to Democratic voter next time this happens. Then there’s the ActBlue candidates, who did better than the pathetic DLC folks.

    Cheer,

  92. typanda43 Says:

The sad, scary, depressing thing about this particular vote is that it is an open admission by the Democratic party that Republicans rule. The Republicans try to picture themselves as spirited and skilled at parliamentary procedure, but in fact they are unprincipled and overbearing. The Dems have capitulated; the minority party is the controlling party in Congress.
We who looked to the Democrats to lead us out of the disastrous Iraq occupation are screwed.

  93. wingnutjeff Says:

My question to Senator Cornhole and his 71 followers is, Will you be passing a resolution to condem FoxNoise? They have criticized triple amputee veteran Max Cleland, General Wesley Clark, Admiral Fallon and numerous other Generals who disagreed with and were eventually fired by our great decider.

What’s worse, FoxNoise does this 24 hours a day for free. MoveOn at least got contributions from the people in order to place an ad with their views and there was nothing untruthful in the ad. FoxNoise on the other hand, back when I watched to stay informed about the right’s tactics, I could easily find 5-10 outright lies per hour show.

I was glad to see that neither of my Senators voted for that stupid resolution but we need to get on the other Dems who did. We shouldn’t be rude but they need to understand that they are playing the rights game when they vote like this. They own the Senate’s agenda and this never should have been allowed to come up for a vote.

  94. wingnutjeff Says:

Here are a few fun facts about General BetrayUs. After you read them you can decide if MoveOn was over the line.

As a young officer, BetrayUs started dating and eventually married his Post Commanders daughter because it would be a good career move.

General BetrayUs, up until Bushie boy picked him to head up Iraq, spent his time as a desk officer avoiding combat.

General BetrayUs’s previous writings about counter insurgency and combat was a complete 180 degrees from his current stance which he only adopted when he had an opportunity to be picked for advancement by pResident Bush.

General BetrayUs’s boss, Admiral Fallon was once heard saying about the General, “He’s a chicken$h!t suck-up, he’ll say anything to get ahead”.

MoveOn overthe line? I don’t think so.

  95. Exley Says:

“Officially, Lieberman is an Independent-DEMOCRAT. What’s the excuse for these 100% Democrats?”

They have a sense of honor and decency.

  96. Exley Says:

“Many Democratic strategists were privately furious at the group for launching an attack on a member of the military … Yesterday, almost two weeks after the ad ran, MoveOn found itself in an unenviable position: almost universally condemned by Senate Democrats and Republicans…
[N]early every member of the Senate had repudiated MoveOn, including Democratic presidential contender Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) and Obama, who both voted for the Democratic version that did not include MoveOn’s name but said there had been an “unwarranted personal attack” on Petraeus.”

    Washington Post
    9/21/07

  97. Starve-A-Bush_Feed-A-Beaver Says:

The loons on the right, such as the ubiquitous Pat Buchanan have been fixated by the words “Betray Us” in the ad. They’ve honed in on those words like on a lighthouse beacon in the night, without paying attention to any other aspect of the ad by Move-On. No one has been talking about the actual content of the ad on the cable TV talking-head shows. You would think the actual content of the ad would be relevant. Nothing in the ad by Move On called Petraeus a traitor. Those words were never used. Yet, right wing loon after right loon has accused Move-On of doing just that. The words that come right after “Betray Us” are “cooking the books”. That’s what Petraeus was accused of, “cooking the books”. That’s the point every word of the ad makes: that Petraeus betrayed the truth, not his country. The point of the ad is that every report about Iraq says that the surge has failed, but questions whether Petraeus would be using phoney, fabricated statistics based on such practices as whether Iraqis shot in the front of the head are counted among the casualties of sectarian violence. In fact, that’s what several Republicans were suggesting that Petraeus was doing, when they questioned him in the Senate. Again, it would help if the actual content of the ad were discussed. But I guess it’s easier just focusing in on the words “Betray Us” and neglecting everything else, attributing to Move-On whatever motive and intention that a proper, upstanding right wing loon cares to do.

  98. Eskwaya Says:

Although I think the MoveOn ad was sophmoric, a congressional debate is hardly warranted. So now they’ve condemned the MoveOn advertisement… Israel just launched an unprovoked attacked on Syria and the congress is mum. In fact, it was revealed that, just prior to the Israeli attack, the U.S. shared intelligence about Syria with Israel and, thereby, aided in the attack. Not a peep.

  99. hterrya Says:

An email sent to Senators Leahy, Conrad, and Mikulski:

    Dear Senator Leahy:

I have been an ardent supporter of yours, since long your vote against the invasion of Iraq (H.J.Res. 114, 107th Congress).

Now I am VERY disappointed in you.

How could you vote with the NeoCons who are hell-bent in support of the interminable occupation and destruction of Iraq and against MoveOn.org, which has supported YOU and your efforts to stop the debacle in Iraq? Couldn’t you see that this vote is a ploy to smear YOU and all those who oppose their warmongering?

I had thought much better of you. It is a sad day.

Please Note: A similar email has been sent by webform to Senators Conrad (D - ND), and Mikulski (D - MD).

And, a copy of this email is being provided by webform to MoveOn.org.
