An email sent to Senators Leahy, Conrad, and Mikulski:

Dear Senator Leahy:

I have been an ardent supporter of yours, since long your vote against the invasion of Iraq (H.J.Res. 114, 107th Congress).

Now I am VERY disappointed in you.

How could you vote with the NeoCons who are hell-bent in support of the interminable occupation and destruction of Iraq and against MoveOn.org, which has supported YOU and your efforts to stop the debacle in Iraq? Couldn't you see that this vote is a ploy to smear YOU and all those who oppose their warmongering?

I had thought much better of you. It is a sad day.

Please Note: A similar email has been sent by webform to Senators Conrad (D - ND), and Mikulski (D - MD).

And, a copy of this email is being provided by webform to MoveOn.org.

Although I think the MoveOn ad was sophmoric, a congressional debate is hardly warranted. So now they've condemned the MoveOn advertisement... Israel just launched an unprovoked attacked on Syria and the congress is mum. In fact, it was revealed that, just prior to the Israeli attack, the U.S. shared intelligence about Syria with Israel and, thereby, aided in the attack. Not a peep.

The loons on the right, such as the ubiquitous Pat Buchanan have been fixated by the words "Betray Us" in the ad. They've honed in on those words like on a lighthouse beacon in the night, without paying attention to any other aspect of the ad by Move-On. No one has been talking about the actual content of the ad on the cable TV talking-head shows. You would think the actual content of the ad would be relevant. Nothing in the ad by Move On called Petraeus a traitor. Those words were never used. Yet, right wing loon after right loon has accused Move-On of doing just that. The words that come right after "Betray Us" are "cooking the books". That's what Petraeus was accused of, "cooking the books". That's the point every word of the ad makes: that Petraeus betrayed the truth, not his country. The point of the ad is that every report about Iraq says that the surge has failed, but questions whether Petraeus would be using phoney, fabricated statistics based on such practices as whether Iraqis shot in the front of the head are counted among the casualties of sectarian violence. In fact, that's what several Republicans were suggesting that Petraeus was doing, when they questioned him in the Senate. Again, it would help if the actual content of the ad were discussed. But I guess it's easier just focusing in on the words "Betray Us" and neglecting everything else, attributing to Move-On whatever motive and intention that a proper, upstanding right wing loon cares to do.

"Many Democratic strategists were privately furious at the group for launching an attack on a member of the military ... Yesterday, almost two weeks after the ad ran, MoveOn found itself in an unenviable position: almost universally condemned by Senate Democrats and Republicans...
[N]early every member of the Senate had repudiated MoveOn, including Democratic presidential contender Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) and Obama, who both voted for the Democratic version that did not include MoveOn's name but said there had been an "unwarranted personal attack" on Petraeus."

Here are a few fun facts about General BetrayUs. After you read them you can decide if MoveOn was over the line.

As a young officer, BetrayUs started dating and eventually married his Post Commanders daughter because it would be a good career move.

General BetrayUs, up until Bushie boy picked him to head up Iraq, spent his time as a desk officer avoiding combat.

General BetrayUs's previous writings about counter insurgency and combat was a complete 180 degrees from his current stance which he only adopted when he had an opportunity to be picked for advancement by pResident Bush.

General BetrayUs's boss, Admiral Fallon was once heard saying about the General, "He's a chicken$h!t suck-up, he'll say anything to get ahead".

MoveOn overthe line? I don't think so.

My question to Senator Cornhole and his 71 followers is, Will you be passing a resolution to condem FoxNoise? They have criticized triple amputee veteran Max Cleland, General Wesley Clark, Admiral Fallon and numerous other Generals who disagreed with and were eventually fired by our great decider.

What's worse, FoxNoise does this 24 hours a day for free. MoveOn at least got contributions from the people in order to place an ad with their views and there was nothing untruthful in the ad. FoxNoise on the other hand, back when I watched to stay informed about the right's tactics, I could easily find 5-10 outright lies per hour show.

I was glad to see that neither of my Senators voted for that stupid resolution but we need to get on the other Dems who did. We shouldn't be rude but they need to understand that they are playing the rights game when they vote like this. They own the Senate's agenda and this never should have been allowed to come up for a vote.

The sad, scary, depressing thing about this particular vote is that it is an open admission by the Democratic party that Republicans rule. The Republicans try to picture themselves as spirited and skilled at parliamentary procedure, but in fact they are unprincipled and overbearing. The Dems have capitulated; the minority party is the controlling party in Congress.
We who looked to the Democrats to lead us out of the disastrous Iraq occupation are screwed.

#14 ggibson:

P.S.: Your reaction is precisely what the Republicans are hoping for and planning on. They want to try and fracture the Democratic party, and get enough people pissed at the party as a whole. Change is not impossible; witness Lamont. Too bad Connecticut went Republican after that, but the eedjits there that enabled that will have to deal with their own conscience. Maybe that will be a lesson to Democratic voter next time this happens. Then there's the ActBlue candidates, who did better than the pathetic DLC folks.

Cheer,

Either they think we are stupid or they are completely incompetent. Maybe they are stupid and completely incompetent. But in the history of the US we have consistently started wars and sent our own people to their deaths for some greater cause. It is very sad but I truly believe that the strongest, the ones most capable of survival, know how to separate the flag waving venom from the truth and then react appropriately.

There are two Democrats opposing each other for the opportunity to oppose Cornyn: Rick Noriega (http://www.ricknoriega.com/) and Mikal Watts (http://wattsforsenate.com/). Either candidate makes Cornyn look like the slick, two-bit, sleezy, political hack that "Johnny, the crooked lawyer" has always been!

If you have ever been in the same room with the lizard, as I have, you want to take a bath to get clean. He is loathsome.

He makes the other crooked, corrupt, loathsome, NeoCon Texas senator look sane (barely) by comparison!

There are two Democrats opposing each other for the opportunity to oppose Cornyn: Rick Noriega (http://www.ricknoriega.com/) and Mikal Watts (http://wattsforsenate.com/). Either candidate makes Cornyn look like the slick, two-bit, sleezy, political hack that “Johnny, the crooked lawyer” has always been!

If you have ever been in the same room with the lizard, as I have, you want to take a bath to get clean. He is loathsome.

He makes the other crooked, corrupt, loathsome, NeoCon Texas senator look sane (barely) by comparison!

MCMetal, thanks for the "dishonor roll" of the 23 pukes who normally vote with the Senate Democratic majority.

Want to know what is saddest of all?

Conrad, Leahy, and Mikulski voted against the invasion of Iraq, and now they've gone all soft over a POLITICAL ADVERTISEMENT!

It's heartbreaking to watch strong folks go weak!

Wow, 1/2 the Dems in the Senate abandon MoveOn.org:

What a sorry state of affairs for the Dems - your self righteous indignation is having absolutely no affect anymore, because real world issues are steam rolling you.

Cornyn is so sure of his seat. He is up for re-election next year and yesterday voted against allowing an up-or-down vote on restoring Habeas Corpus. Is everyone in Texas brain dead or will he have opposition?

Republicans are only following that sage advice: "Go with what you know." What they know is pointing fingers; they sure as hell can't govern.

You’d be wise to tone it down, but I know you won’t :-)

Comment by Toliver — September 20, 2007 @ 8:59 pm

Try "telling the truth" and "making a real point". You might find it refreshing and different.

Why do the truth and real points hate America so?

Comment by Ret. Col. Jack Ripper

No need to fool anyone. Democrats have shown themselves to be exactly what the rightwingers have been calling them for a long time... cowards. They have had every opportunity to call out the bushies and we all have seen with disgrace how they just keep rolling over.

The GOP appears to be corrupt to the core so the republicans are all out except the one named Ron Paul. Hell Ron Paul can be believed for more than any democrat except an obvious few.
