Bush flip-flops on Iraq Study Group.

Bush flip-flops on Iraq Study Group.»

President Bush on the future of Iraq, 5/24/07:

[Bush] talked about a transition to “a different configuration” in Iraq after the surge of U.S. troops is completed this summer. When pressed on whether he was talking about a post-surge Plan B, Bush answered: “Actually, I would call that a plan recommended by Baker-Hamilton, so that would be a Plan B-H.” […]

Yes, that same Baker-Hamilton plan now seems to be official White House policy.

President Bush on the future of Iraq, 9/19/07:

In an interview with a group of columnists that I attended Wednesday, [Bush] dismissed the notion of establishing the 2006 recommendations of the Iraq Study Group as official U.S. policy. […]

“My attitude is, I accept what [U.S. Iraq commander] Gen. [David] Petraeus recommended, not what they recommend,” he said, referring to Members of Congress pushing the ISG approach, which includes moving U.S. troops from a combat role to one of “overwatch.”

TP, it would be really helpful if you could find links that didn’t require a subscription. These Roll Call links are particularly irritating . . . although this possibly spared me having to read something by Morton Kondracke.

Yes. I can give you a lesson on Jeffersonian democracy that will bring tears to your eyes, but when I was doing business as the secretary of state, the word I used was reform, less so than democracy. When I dealt with the Arab world, we had several conferences on reform. The word democracy frightened them. As a Saudi leader said to me, “Colin, please, give us a break. Do you really want to see Jeffersonian democracy in Saudi Arabia? Do you know what would happen? Fundamentalists would win, and there wouldn’t be any more elections.” President Hosni Mubarak in Egypt would say the same thing. They all were saying, “Take a look at our history and where we are. You can talk to us about reform, but don’t tell us to become Jeffersonian democracies tomorrow. It’s not possible.”

The past several weeks DUbya has looked like a person mailing it in. He has no fire, no comprehension and no short term (or long term) memory.

Either he has given up and/or is on SERIOUS meds.

Candyce is wise, and quite correct. Bush is simply going to tell us anything and everything until he leaves office. Leaving the huge mess for somebody else to clean up - ya know, sorta like his life history so far. I really feel sorry for the last 26%r’s. They keep on wanting a king, and Bush keeps on looking like the class clown.

  16. Buckie Boy Says:

He’ll say what ever he can to drag this thing out for the next couple of presidents to fix. Then he can hide out in South Amercia at his ranch with the Billions he turned into gold or Euro’s because the USA will be in Depression 2.0. Of course there will be the World Criminal Courts trying to snatch him up also. He probably has that ranch well guarded.

    Buck Fush

  17. Nevar Says:

    George:
    “…so that would be a Plan B-H.”

    “…so that would be a Plan B-S.”

    Fixed it for ya, cowboy.
    (Don’t mention it…)

  18. Krazny Says:

Mostly want Bush wants to do is run out the clock long enough to get out of office. For once his daddy’s pals weren’t able to fix the problem for him, and he has no idea what to do. So like a stubborn drunk, he sticks to one course of action.

  19. Badger Says:

I’m reminded of Abraham Lincoln’s riddle:
If you call a dog’s tail a leg….how many legs does the dog have??”
The answer of course is FOUR…because calling a dog’s tail a leg doesn’t MAKE IT a leg.
Bush is making it up as he is forced to deal with the REALITIES of Iraq. Whatever twisted narative he comes up with…It will be called the Path to Victory.

  20. StratRat Says:

Of course there will be the World Criminal Courts trying to snatch him up also. He probably has that ranch well guarded.

And Paraguay has no extradition treaty with the US, so he may be out of reach when the reality of his criminal enterprise becomes more apparent.

  23. StratRat Says:

The president has selected General Petraeus’ current judgment over those year-and-a-half-old lecture notes. What’s wrong with getting up-to-speed?

    Comment by CT

Backing a mouthpiece in uniform over several seasoned diplomats is just what Bush would do. Bush has flip flopped for so many FU’s, he needs a roadmap to find the bathroom.

It is amazing that some folks do not value the vast education and knowledge the ISG group participants bring to the table. Certainly, if the ISG supported Bush’s strategy, they would be hailed as wise men. Since they didn’t blindly support his strategy, the right thinks they are unAmerican shills for the defeatocrats. In Bush’s world the wrong comment takes you from a hero to a zero very quickly.

  24. Badger Says:

The ISG was papa Bush’s gift to his son. It would have allowed George W. to climb out of the Iraqi Qaugmire, and make Iraq a bi-partisan effort. Bush rejected the ISG, and now he and his Republican enablers OWN the War. That’s their position for November 2008.

  25. StratRat Says:

ISG’s book is out of date. The complexities of war change rapidly.

One man, and his many sycophants, are destroying this country. I would rather consider the varied and valued remarks of several statemen over the uninspired and lazy neocon views of Cheney’s adminstration. We revolted against the king in the past, and maybe it is about time real Americans start to think abot the boy king squatting in our White House. Also your post was incorrect: The complexities of a failed invasion for oil change rapidly. The wrong people invaded the wrong country for all of the wrong reasons - and you still support this imbecile? History will frown on those who worship a king, rather than the constitution. Which side are you?
    King or country?

  26. hellinabucket Says:

I’d settle for an explaination on why the ISG is out of date.

Former B-52 fleet commander leading probe of nuclear missile incident
    Created: September 20, 2007 06:04 PM Modified: September 21, 2007 10:43 AM

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has asked a retired general who once commanded the nation’s fleet of B-52s to lead an outside inquiry into how one of the bombers was mistakenly armed with nuclear weapons at a base in North Dakota and flown to Barksdale Air Force Base.

The Air Force began investigating the episode three weeks ago but Gates wants an outside inquiry, led by former Air Force Chief of Staff Larry Welch.

“And so, in my State of the — my State of the Union — or state — my speech to the nation, whatever you want to call it, speech to the nation — I asked Americans to give 4,000 years — 4,000 hours over the next — the rest of your life — of service to America.”

What did we, the taxpayers, pay for the Iraq Study Group? Remember back in Dec. 2006 (9 1/2 months ago) when Bush supported the findings of the ISG to great fanfare in the media?

One month later, he said f… y.. to the ISG and ordered the “surge.” Now, with the “surge” a failure and Gen. BetrayUs supporting Bush’s plans for 10 more years of War, Bush totally dismisses the ISG.

What did we, the taxpayers, pay for the Iraq Study Group?
