U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has asked a retired general who once commanded the nation’s fleet of B-52s to lead an outside inquiry into how one of the bombers was mistakenly armed with nuclear weapons at a base in North Dakota and flown to Barksdale Air Force Base.
