Ahmadinejad denies existence of gays in Iran.

In his speech at Columbia University today, Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was asked about the treatment of gays in Iran. Ahmadinejad responded, “In Iran, we dont have homosexuals like in your country. We don’t have that in our country. In Iran, we do not have this phenomenon. I don’t know who’s told you we have it.” Watch it:

“Some international gay rights groups believe that more than 4,000 lesbians and gay men have been executed since the Ayatollahs seized power in 1979,” notes 365gay.com.

  12. Peter C Says:

Yes, this man is delusional and objectionable, but he is not the devil incarnate, nor is he universally supported in Iran.

We need to remember that he has been successful in Iran as a reaction to Bush's hegemony in Iraq.

If we end our occupation and resume a more rational policy in the Middle East, the hard-liners in Iran will not stay in power.

We should resist the media rush to turn this man into an inhuman monster. That way leads to war.

    comity, thats been debunked:

But one expert in Farsi, Arash Norouzi, wrote an article on the Web on January 18, 2007, laying out what Ahmadinejad did and did not say. With my 10-minute time limit, I don't want to go into it in much detail, but I do want to highlight one word that Ahmadinejad used in his famous quote: "rezhim-e." What does that sound like to you? [Members of the audience answered "regime."]

Right. So what he was saying was that the Zionist regime should be eliminated. This is not at all the same as proposing that a country be wiped out. Democrats want the Bush "regime" eliminated, and Republicans wanted Bill Clinton's "regime" eliminated.

Sounds like a good idea to me so long as it is just the two of them. What would their choice of weapons be? Would they beat each other with their pink umbrellas? Perhaps play "King of the Mountain" atop an oil derrick? Vice-presidents at twenty-paces? A lose-lose scenario for the two of them would be a win-win for the rest of the world.

  28. Peter C Says:

    Krazny,

    Here's what I was remembering:

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The White House scorned an Iraqi leader's suggestion that President Bush and Saddam Hussein could resolve their differences in a duel, calling it an "irresponsible statement" that did not justify a "serious response."

"I just want to point out that in the past when Iraq had disputes, it invaded its neighbors," White House press secretary Ari Fleischer told reporters.

"There were no duels; there were no invasions. There was use of weapons of mass destruction and [the] military. And that's how Iraq settles its disputes."

Fleischer was responding to comments made Thursday by Iraqi Vice President Taha Yassin Ramadan in an interview with Abu Dhabi television that was also broadcast by CNN.

The Iraqi leader argued that instead of going to war with Iraq, Bush should participate in a personal duel with Saddam.

"Bush wants to attack the whole Iraq, the army and the infrastructure," Ramadan said. "If such a call is genuine, then let the American president and a selected group with him face a selected group of us and we choose a neutral land and let [U.N. Secretary-General] Kofi Annan be a supervisor and both groups should use the same weapon."

"A president against a president and vice president against a vice president, and a duel takes place, if they are serious," the Iraqi vice president said. "And in this way we are saving the American and Iraqi people."

  70. bob h Says:

And Juan, though I have never been in combat I am the son of soldiers. Ahmadinejad's statement reminds me of the late Queen Victoria of Great Britain. When a law banning homosexuality came to her to sign, she struck out all references to women, believing that women were incapable of such acts. By doing so, she inadvertently made female homosexuality legal while making male homosexuality illegal.

I don't know if Ahmadinejad actually believes that every Iranian follows Sharia law to the letter, or if that's just the face he wants to project to the world.

Since they are equivalent to murderers, should they all receive capital punishment as well? Or should they go to jail for a long, long time?

The well regulated militia is the U.S. military. I don't think anyone is against them having guns.

Tracy your retarded. Where exactly in the middle east is the united states located?

Wouldnt it be more accurate to compare the number of jews in iran to the number of jews in other middle eastern countries ? Looking at your little chart, I see Iran is second only to Turkey in total population of jews in middle eastern countries. No other M.E. country (other than Israel obviously) has more than 200. Compared to less than 200, I'd say 11,000 is pretty signifigant.

And Daryll, what a shock to see you back on a thread about gays.
