Top 100 effects of global warming.»

Mic Check, the radio prep service of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, released a report today highlighting the “Top 100 Effects of Global Warming.” Some examples:

– Say Goodbye to Pinot Noir: The reason you adore pinot noir is that it comes from a notoriously temperamental thin-skinned grape that thrives in cool climates. Warmer temperatures are already damaging the pinots from Oregon, “baking away” the grape’s berry flavors. [Bloomberg]

– Mediterranean Sea? Try the Dead Sea.: Italian experts say thanks to faster evaporation and rising temperatures, the Mediterranean Sea is quickly turning into “a salty and stagnant sea.” The hot, salty water “could doom many of the sea’s plant and animal species and ravage the fishing industry.” [AP]

– Farewell to the Arctic Fox: The White Arctic Fox used to rule the colder climes, but as temperatures warm up, its more aggressive cousin, the Red Fox, is moving North and taking over. [Wired]

– War in Somalia: In April, a group of 11 former U.S. military leaders released a report charging that the war in Somalia during the 1990s stemmed in part from national resource shortages caused by global warming. [Washington Post]

Why can’t the grapes move north?

Also, what will global warming do to Shiraz and Malbec?

  2. Jay Randal Says:

Yes, but Bush could kill us all off with a nuclear war before this stuff happens.

  3. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

I expect the Bush cultists to start linking to Exxon-sponsored sites very soon.

  4. Jay Randal Says:

Well Squegeeboo the Dogwood trees in Georgia are dying off in southern and central Georgia, because they like cooler and wetter conditions > Georgia is now becoming like Florida, so dry, hot and bugs. Dogwood trees might survive in northern Georgia mountains. Half of my Dogwood trees died this summer and the rest are doomed in long term.

Don’t bother trying to explain it to squiggy, it’s way over his head.

    Huh?

Say Hello to Bulgarian Hooker Shortages
“Brothel owners in Bulgaria are blaming global warming for staff shortages. They claim their best girls are working in ski resorts because a lack of snow has forced tourists to seek other pleasures.” [Metro UK]

    We’re worried about pimps?

They make wine out of dogwood trees? I’m so confused.

Now did anyone else look at the article? The top 3 are wine related. And then it gets into a lot in regards to animal extinctions, larger crop die offs, spread of diseases, wars, etc.

Now as much as I enjoy wine, I would think that they would go towards the bottom of the list, as opposed to the top rankings.

Hey, some of us have to work for a living.

  9. Bienville Says:

The one thing the Bush admin produces in abundance will enjoy a wider appeal:

    Burning Poo
As “shifting rainfall patterns” brought on by global warming “have made northern Senegal drier and hotter,” entire species of trees (like the Dimb Tree) are dying out, making it harder for natives to find firewood. As a result, more people are having to burn cow dung for cooking fires.

  10. BlueDog Says:

Some very valid points. Unlike Clinton, Bush Jr. is not willing to make the tough choices on the budget. Hopefully America can survivle another year of someone who obvious has Texas on his mind. What’s the lesson to be learned from hjis presidency? Uhhhhhhh, alcohol is not the friend of brain cells.

  11. pbg Says:

Actually, squiggy’s fatuous question points something out. The grapes could be moved north–if similar topography could be found, and you could buy it–not to mention selling the old laand for a decent price. But this would cost millions of dollars for even a small vinyard, and take years to accomplish. A profit center goes away.
It’s not just the disaster movie stuff: it’s people’s businesses being ruined, it’s the economy being savaged. eveen if people aren’t runiing screaming from giant tornadoes and tidal waves, people get poorer, businesses fail, opportunities shrink.
If The USA starts to resemble the land of Mexico more and more, more and more we’ll become Canada’s Mexicans.
    A pretty prospect, no?

Damn right! Just think about what the loss of natural bird habitats will do to the worldwide fedora hat and feather boa supply!

  13. Jericho Says:

“natural resource shortages”? You mean like, the people that work at Coca-Cola wells in Africa can’t find a drop to drink? We’re already there.

  14. tombaker Says:

11 - we’ll wait here while you dash down there with a ruler, then you come back and tell us, k?

  15. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

Here’s another idea: people who are too arrogant and ignorant to listen to and respect sound science should shut the hell up and stay out of these discussions.

  16. tombaker Says:

I guess ron got lost on the way down to the beach to measure sea level rise. Too bad - I was going to try to explain to him that melting ocean ice doesn’t contribute to sea level rise - only glacial and icecap melting does that. Oh well, I don’t suppose he’d have understood how that works anyway.
