ThinkFast: September 25, 2007

bushkwatch.jpg

Defying a Bush veto threat, the House will vote today on a significant expansion of the popular State Children’s Health Insurance Program. It is “the first skirmish in the new battle for universal health coverage. It is also the first confrontation between the president and Congress fought out almost entirely on terms set by the new Democratic majority.”

Violent crime rose nearly 2 percent last year, slightly more than expected, the F.B.I. reported on Monday. “The number of big-city murders also increased, by 1.8 percent, the same rate as homicides nationwide.”

In a victory for the Bush administration, a special military appeals court ruling “removed a legal hurdle that has derailed” trials for detainees at Guantanámo Bay. The ruling allows prosecutors to introduce new evidence that defendents labeled “enemy combatants” are actually “alien unlawful enemy combatants,” as the law requires for them to be tried in military tribunals.

Following large protests last week supporting six African-American teenagers in Jena, LA, white supremacists have begun calling for retaliatory violence. The threats include the posting on a neo-Nazi website of the names, addresses and phone numbers of some of the six teenagers and their families. In an interview, the Mayor of Jena, Murphy McMillin, “praised efforts by pro-white groups to organize counter-demonstrations.”

At a gala in Little Rock last night, former President Bill Clinton and other dignitaries honored the nine black students who integrated Little Rock Central High school fifty years ago while stressing “the country’s continuing need for better race relations.”

UAW President Ron Gettelfinger said of the autoworkers strike: “Job security is one of our primary concerns. … We’re talking about investment and we’re talking about job creation” and preserving benefits, he said. Negotiators were to return Tuesday morning for their 22nd straight day of bargaining.

“The world’s top leaders should meet every three months, starting next year, until a plan is drawn up to reduce emissions blamed for global warming, former U.S. Vice President Al Gore said on Monday. ”

A suicide bomber in Iraq blew himself up on Monday “at a banquet intended to be a reconciliation feast between provincial officials and former Sunni insurgents in Diyala Province, killing 16 people and wounding at least 28.”

And finally: Fly Swatter-in-Chief. Tony Snow reports that Bush chases “flies around the Oval Office. It drives him crazy when flies get in.” Bush is so well known as a fly hunter among his White House staff, says Snow, that somebody “made him White House fly swatters.”

    Just for Bush.

....while stressing “the country’s continuing need for better race relations.”

By reading the Jena, LA article, it looks like we have some serious need for better race relations in that town. I also think the mayor should be fired. If any one of those six black teenagers are hurt, it will lie squarely on the Mayor's shoulders for inciting white supremacists. He's probably one himself.

    And finally: Fly Swatter-in-Chief.

This may be the first documented evidence that Bush does something well.

  4. gummitch Says:

Children SHOULD have health insurance. However, there are several problems with this proposal being floated.

    1. It is funded through a $.61/pack cigarette increase. I am not a smoker but feel it is wrong to target one sect of society to fund something such as this.

Blame it on the mindset of the "conservatives" that has prevented any increases in any taxes for years. The only taxes that can squeak by are sin taxes, particularly those pointed at unpopular behavior.

    2. It classifies a child as someone up to 25. 25 year olds are not children. If they are, then raise the drinking age to 26, raise the voting age to 26, raise the driving age to 26 and the age to enlist in the military to 26.

Children are those who are dependent on their parents, and under most health plans, this includes "children" who are 24 years old and full-time students. This proposal merely mimics those (private) health plans. Take it up with them.

    3. Families with incomes up to $82,000 can qualify for SCHIP. This might be fine in cities like New York, but is way too much in a lot of areas. Perhaps that ought to be a sliding scale based on the local economy.

    Comment by JSchmoAZ — September 25, 2007 @ 9:23 am

I think a sliding scale has been proposed, actually, and was highly unpopular in areas that might have been, well, slid. Like most legislation (all?) this is a compromise.

Too bad the Dems have caved in to Bush on almost everything else. They have given in on the Iraq war, trashing our rights, giving unpresidented power to the executive branch, using the Constitution to wipe their asses with.

They cave every time Bush lies and cries wolf ( terrorist ).

It is time for a total sweep of every f**king incumbent in office, Democrat or Republican. Neither party has shown they have the interests of this Country, the citizens, or the Constitution at heart.

It's sad that Jena LA is still stuck in the Jim Crow days. White supremacists are calling for retaliatory violence (and we've seen how well that has worked for the Jews and Palestinians in Israel, and the Shiites and Sunnis in Iraq), and Jena's mayor is praising pro-white groups. That this is happening in America should be alarming to all Americans.

I noticed the placement of this item immediately above the item about remembering the Central High integration in Little Rock. Just when you think we've made some progress in the last 50 years...

  11. bilbobaggins Says:

This criminal act will most likely be investigated by the FBI and charges will follow. Fortunately the numbers of mentally challenged who would act on these recommendations by the supremacists are very small and the great majority of christians who are offended by this will stand against them.

The content of the comment was deleted, and only the information bilbobaggins posted was available. Several sites manage comments like this (which has the side effect of keeping numbering consistent when comments are deleted). I like it, personally, and appreciate sites that do a really good job of monitoring comments. TP is getting a lot better, I will say.

  19. Veritas Says:

Hi MissMolly,Wayne! I'm afraid that the situation in Jena is illustrative of just how deleterious discrimination, bigotry, and hatred can be to a society. No doubt Bush and his so-called 'christian right' have contributed largely to this regression to Jim Crowe days in this country. Their "hate-filled' ideology and message has eroded all of the civil rights progress this country has made over the last 4 decades. Again, I believe we can thank GWB and his cadre of bigots for all of this. Appalling is what it is.

Your statement "majority of christians who are offended by this will stand against them." was laughable at best. Wow, how interesting. TP deleted my post. What is the matter, are they afraid of a little competition.

There was no comment. Just what I posted. Apparently they "they who shall not be named" ban troll posters based on their IP address. And "they who shall not be named" don't even have a registration system. I like their site very much and will be visiting there more often. Perhaps it is a good alternative to TP who censors posts that mention another blog's name. Shame on you TP.

I view at least a dozen blogs a day and always attribute new things accordingly and include the url here at TP. Is this something new that they are doing?

  27. Veritas Says:

Frankly, I think the posters here at TP lend too much credence to the inane blather of trolls which turns many potential bloggers off. When one has to scroll down pages of nonsense and name-calling to find something of value, it's time to visit another blogsite. It's been shown that if a troll is ignored as though he's not there, he vanishes. And with the new registration system allowing the site monitors to see if the same troll is returning with a new moniker, there really shouldn't be a problem

Ignore the piss soaked trolls and don't permit THEM to pull your strings. Giving away one's personal power to a troll is precisely what their motive is. It has nothing to do with the material being presented at all; rather it's about hijacking the conversation (which they do handily by engaging a poster in a pissing contest or a name calling diatribe). It's all about "controlling others". Don't permit yourselves to be manipulated so easily.

  31. bilbobaggins Says:

And with the new registration system allowing the site monitors to see if the same troll is returning with a new moniker, there really shouldn’t be a problem

I'm not sure this is true. Their registration system seems to be based on an e-mail address. I have my own domain name so I can have up to 100 e-mail addresses, meaning I could have 100 monikers on this site. The smart way to do it is based on IP address. Allow only one registration per IP address and then if you ban someone, ban the IP address. That's the smart way to do it.

Even though things are much better here since all the "Sybil" personalities have been banished, TP still allows blatant trolls like Jake to post. He has nothing to offer and all he does is fling feces against the wall, when he isn't making childish comments about his "banned list".

  52. missmolly Says:

    Regarding trolls:

The people who are labeled "trolls" by others here at TP seem to come in about three different flavors.

First type: This poster contributes absolutely nothing and serves only to fill threads with nonsense. Mr. P and his "HeyoooOOOOoooooOOOO Moonbats!" is a perfect example. When others complain of "troll droppings", it's usually a complaint about this type of poster.

Second type: This poster can at least communicate somewhat coherently, but favors name-calling and spouting tired soundbites instead of making valid points or rebutting others in an intelligent manner. When they DO try to make a point, it's usually a cliche. The "Clinton did it too" crowd falls in this category, as well as the ones who like to use "smear" and "slander" in every post. Also look for "14% approval for Democrat Congress" (or any other made up low number).

Third type: This poster is capable of original thought and posts with some intelligence, but with a conservative viewpoint. THIS POSTER IS NOT A TROLL. He/she has a different point of view, and that's OK. I actually enjoy intelligent debate with this type of poster. Unfortunately, some start out as this type and then morph into either the first or second type.

President Bush has a thing about noises. First we learned that he absolutely hates when a cellular phone starts ringing during meetings. It drives him crazy when flies get in." And Bush is so well known as a fly hunter among his White House staff, says Snow, that somebody "made him White House fly swatters."

Add it to the list of things we know about Bush.

    - difficulty with social interaction
    - problems with verbal and nonverbal communication

One of the problems we face that contributes to the situation like that in Jena is that parents teach hate and intolerance to their children, who likely pass it along to their children in turn. Kids aren't born to hate; they are taught to hate, whether it is from one or both parents, or from pressure from society, in which it is up to the parents to try and have greater influence and do the "right thing." Until the parents in those areas start reversing this trend, unfortunately I don't see much change happening in the near future.

Why is this just a victory for Bush? Doesn't the left complain about how these people just sit in Gitmo with out even going on trial? Now they can go on trial.

Yes, now they can go on trial at a "Military Tribunal" where they have virtually no rights. They don't have the right to confront witnesses and they don't have the right to present witnesses on their behalf. These "Military Tribunal's" are your basic Kangaroo Court.

I am anti Organized Religion. I come by my opinion from the historical records showing organized religions, christian, muslum, hindu, etc.. has shed more innocent blood over the history of mankind than all the tyrants and dictators of history put together.

That is alot of innocent blood on the hands of those who profess to speak for God.

And christians, historically, when they do not have non-christans to murder, tend to turn on other christians of different sects to persecute and murder. Historical fact.

  91. bilbobaggins Says:

I think this can be argued about humanity in general or better yet organized government I am certain that more have died at the hands of government than of non-organized humans. Will you become a supporter of anarchy or at least join me in my opposition to big government? Probably not. But it shows the lack of logic in your thinking.
    Comment by Vendetta

Your logic is seriously flawed. Most people who have died on this earth have died because of religion. Many governments start wars that are based on religious beliefs or to protect religious groups.

And your straw man argument that if you don't oppose big government you support anarchy is just that, a stupid straw-man argument.

I support a government that is in existence to support the people within the country the government applies. I believe our government has the duty to protect us, provide for our welfare....you know, all that stuff that is in the Constitution.

Our current Administration is trying to destroy our government so that they can replace it with private industry. That way their rich friends can not only make money off of war, they can also make money off of doing the things the constitution provides for. If that ever comes to pass, the United States of America will cease to exist. We will officially become the United Corporations of America.

  92. tombaker Says:

107 - I'd have to say you're mistaken in that assumption. You're trapped in that "pro-or-anti" modality, which dictates that, if a person does not 110% embrace something, it means they are 110% opposed to its existence, and vice versa. It's the fruit of a poison rhetorical tree that prevents its practicioners from ever gaining a better understanding of the objects of their inquiry. It's especially harmful in the political sphere, where people are forced into one or the other position at the insistence of an aggressive and lesser-informed opponent. "You must either condemn X, or we will insist that you condone Y". The logic is faulty, and it leads everyone away from the truth.

  93. tombaker Says:

107 - You also seem to have missed my central point, which was the fact that religious groups have been, up until the '80's, champions of "Lefty" causes. The reason is that Lefty causes mesh better with real Christian values.

  94. gummitch Says:

    Comment by bilbobaggins — September 25, 2007 @ 12:51 pm

Bilbo, I've got to take issue with you on this. While I agree that religion has played an enormous role in wars and death, I think that you'll find that wars of territory and conquest have been responsible for equal or greater numbers. This is especially true when you consider that the wars of the last few centuries, due to "efficiencies" have managed to slaughter huge quantities of people and most of them have not been religious in nature.

Romans, Mongols, the colonization of North and South America . . . all primarily wars of conquest and territory with very little actual religious content (although the Spanish conquests certainly had this as a component).

    Just sayin'.

RoS - I'm aware of the dark side, too, and it's also true that the big religions have always had big political partners in those dark chapters. What I wanted to emphasize is the fact that individual spiritual leaders have lent impetus to nearly all of the major Human Rights movements in history (in particular, American History) ie: Abolition, the Labor Movement, and the Peace Movement.

    Comment by Vendetta — September 25, 2007 @ 1:15 pm

Your question is as simplistic as your reasoning.

I am very much a proponent of the Constitution and Rule of law. One of those tenants of the Constitution is to promote the general welfare. Spying on citizens without a warrant is a violation of the Constitution.

I believe in a strong military, but oppose using our military for corporate interests, the military should only be used if our country is at risk from an attack, not because a country took an oil field away from Exxon or peasants are striking at Chichita banana farm in central America. ( Iraq was over OIL, Bush lied )

I am neither Republican or Democrat, I am more of a liberal leaning independant. Neither party has the best interests of citizens at heart, while they pocket money from Big Business.

The amazing thing is that year after year, no aspect of the fiasco in Iraq is unaffordable or unnecessary. There's always room for more killing, more destruction, more war, more war, more war.

We have all the money in the world for the folly of "building a democracy in the middle east." But, here in America: an American city is physically destroyed; an American state is economically crippled, and American citizens are deprived of their lives, their jobs, their property, and their homes, and suddenly, we are fiscally too responsible to help.

We are told relentlessly: It's not the Federal governments job to rebuild a New Orleans. But it is, evidently, the Federal government's job to rebuild Iraq.

Vendetta makes a great case, albeit accidentally, for public funding of political campaigns (a central feature of other successful democracies, and those do exist)

The problem isn't with government. Government is the sum of us - it is our property. The problem flows from allowing government to be sold to the highest bidders, who will never have the public's best interests at the top of their priority list.

If you wouldn't "turn out" one of your own for $, then you should support the separation of "free markets" and "our government".

  104. Bienville Says:

    Comment by Vendetta — September 25, 2007 @ 3:12 pm

I often wonder from an environmental perspective if parts should not be rebuilt but allowed to be reclaimed by the sea.
The sea should not be reclaiming any part of the Louisiana. A more responsible plan for managing and rebuilding the wetlands is part of the "unaffordable" and "unnecessary" expenditures. The Mississippi River will rebuild the wetlands, we just have to allow it.

Does it make sense to build below sea level? ...that which is rebuilt will be destroyed again.
Does it make sense to build anywhere? Almost everywhere is prone to some sort of hazard...blizzards, earthquakes, dams, volcanoes...

But this place - New Orleans - is like no other. It is at the triple junction of the busiest inland waterway on earth and the oceans of the world and the intracoastal waterway. Tampa, Houston, Mobile...none of those places can say that. Before Katrina, South Louisiana ports were four of the eight busiest ports in the United States - two of them in the top four. The nation needs those ports. People are needed to work those ports. Those people live in New Orleans.
