On the Senate floor today, Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA) made an impassioned appeal to his fellow senators, declaring that the Lieberman-Kyl amendment on Iran should be “withdrawn” because the “proposal is Dick Cheney’s fondest pipe dream.” Webb cautioned that the “cleverly-worded sense of the Congress” could be “interpreted” to “declare war” on Iran. He continued:
Those who regret their vote five years ago to authorize military action in Iraq should think hard before supporting this approach. Because, in my view, it has the same potential to do harm where many are seeking to do good.
“At best, it’s a deliberate attempt to divert attention from a failed diplomatic policy,” said Webb. “At worst, it could be read as a backdoor method of gaining Congressional validation for military action, without one hearing and without serious debate.” Watch it:
Webb said that amendment’s attempt to categorize the Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp as “a foreign terrorist organization” would, for all practical purposes, “mandate” the military option against Iran. “It could be read as tantamount to a declaration of war. What do we do with terrorist organizations? If they are involved against us, we attack them.”
He also slammed the lack of debate and examination that was accompanying the amendment, saying “this is not the way to make foreign policy”:
We haven’t had one hearing on this. I’m on the Foreign Relations Committee, I’m on the Armed Services Committee. We are about to vote on something that may fundamentally change the way the United States views the Iranian military and we haven’t had one hearing. This is not the way to make foreign policy. It’s not the way to declare war.
Nice to hear Webb speak up, but…
September 25th, 2007 at 1:08 pmJim Webb needs to take Harry Reid outside and kick his ass to the curb. Why is Reid even allowing this to be discussed? What is wrong with these people? Have they all gone crazy?

It sure looks that way to me.
Go Webb! Dems, take heed, you’re either on the bus or under it in ‘08!
September 25th, 2007 at 1:26 pmKyl and Lieberman should be taken out back and kicked to the curb!!
These guys and their wing-nut pals are LUNATICS!! We need another war in the middle est like we need a hole in the head… Are these people nuts or what??
All war all the time is a losing your country plan….
September 25th, 2007 at 1:27 pmSemper Fi Senator Webb. I wish you could instill some backbone into the rest of your party.
I think that someone who has worn the uniform of their country’s armed forces and who served their country during wartime on the front lines knows something about the gravity of warfare. The decision to declare war should only be taken under the gravest of circumstances and when there are no other options available.
September 25th, 2007 at 1:27 pmSo it’s a “backdoor war” with Iran, eh? Give ‘em a “sense of the Senate,” spin that as de facto Congressional approval, and then hang the Dems as hypocrites when they object to next year’s air strikes.
You really have to hand it to the Republicans (Lie-berman included, of course); they play for blood–as long as it’s not their own.
September 25th, 2007 at 1:27 pmWill Jim Webb be Edwards VP?
September 25th, 2007 at 1:30 pmThe people of Virginia have much to be proud of today. They have given this country a great gift in sending this patriot and marine to the Hill.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Congress signaled its disapproval of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad with a vote Tuesday to tighten sanctions against his government and a call to designate his army a terrorist group.
The swift rebuke was a rare display of bipartisan cooperation in a Congress bitterly divided on the Iraq war. It reflected lawmakers’ long-standing nervousness about Tehran’s intentions in the region, particularly toward Israel—a sentiment fueled by the pro-Israeli lobby whose influence reaches across party lines in Congress …
The House passed, by a 397-16 vote, a proposal by Lantos, D-Calif., aimed at blocking foreign investment in Iran, in particular its lucrative energy sector.

September 25th, 2007 at 1:54 pmThank goodness for Webb’s candor and honesty. They’re obviously trying to pull the wool over everyone’s eyes on this one like they did with the run up to Iraq.
If anyone in Congress is “duped again” by this charade, then they no longer deserve to be a representative of the people of this country.
September 25th, 2007 at 1:55 pmNow Iran? Of course, Iran. It’s been part of the Bush/Cheney wet dream from the outset. Dominance of mid-east oil.
September 25th, 2007 at 1:56 pmThis would be the precise time to add a clause to any vote on this. Mandate that anyone voting in favor or another war enlists either himself or his next of kin immediately.

Geez, Exley, that’s gonna p*ss off Shooter, ya know, ’cause Cheney kept doin’ business w/ both Iran and Iraq, thru a subsidiary of Halliburton, right up to 2000, when he **cough… cough** “was chosen” to be Veep.
And w/ all the options Deadeye still has in Halli, this might hit Cheney’s bottom line…
September 25th, 2007 at 1:58 pmInstead of dicking around on the Lieberman/Kyle wet dream, they should be presenting a case for impeachment of both Bush and Cheney right now. What the hell is wrong with this Congress?
September 25th, 2007 at 1:59 pmHe also slammed the lack of debate

September 25th, 2007 at 2:01 pmHi Toasterhead. Yes, Webb has done more good than harm and still represents a rare unsquelched voice although I believe that he’s being strong-armed into doing things for the sake of ‘appearances’ like the MoveOn gesture which is turning the people off toward him. All in all, he’s still a bright spot in a slowly corrupting morass of eels.
September 25th, 2007 at 2:03 pmAny Dem who votes aye on this is locking him/herself into a corner on future Iran legislation.
Who really writes these amendments? I know neither Kyl nor Lieberman are smart enough to nuance the language in ways that create such loopholes. And it doesn’t matter that it’s merely a sense of the Senate – it’s only the first step in getting everyone on record before the real stuff comes along.
September 25th, 2007 at 2:05 pmThe US lied to illegally invade Iraq now looks like Americans will allow another illegal invasion of Iran. Don’t look for any country to send troops are support this. Remember Cuba is a friend of Iran and his Nukes.
September 25th, 2007 at 2:05 pmLooks like Bush/Cheney are getting ready to start World War Three and the DRAFT will have to be open. Just think of all the student protesters that will have to go and fight yes even bloggers who have the birth date called will be sent. Cheney can hold a class on 5 deferments and the rich kids like Mitt’s 5 sons can buy their way out like George W. Bush. But for the rest of Americans you will go and die. If anyone bothered to listen to the Iran President he said weapons were no longer needed to protect his country. Hint hint the WMDs, Nukes and even the Atom bomb the United States has to attack other country might just be obsolete now. Foreign countries are so far advanced now even a poor student in India living in a shack can use a computer and bring down the US system which he did. So all the GOP leaders calling for an illegal attack on Iran never served during Vietnam and will use General Petraeus to gave the speak of attack. I just hope we don’t hear Connie Rice say again that there’s a Mushroom Cloud coming that’s old now.
It will be interesting to see what other countries do when the US attacks Iran. We have no Military to send but we do have a lot of students. One idea is to send the Jena 6 to Iran so they can protect the United States. There are alot of minority kids that can honor their country by serving with all the rights they have been given and as they are treated as equal. That could be an idea just draft minorities who aren’t in college, poor/middle class or in jail. That could make up the 500,000 needed to fight this war for the US to get Iran oil and Israel to get the land. Just don’t ask Israel to send troops as they didn’t send any in Iraq or Afghanistan.
Did Webb just say we should attack the groups that attack America and our interests? Wow you guys are getting bold with your defeatism.

September 25th, 2007 at 2:11 pmFrance Says Letting Iran Go Nuclear Could Cause War
UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) – Allowing Iran to acquire nuclear weapons could destabilize the world and lead to war, French President Nicolas Sarkozy told the United Nations on Tuesday.
In his maiden speech to the U.N. General Assembly, Sarkozy said: “There will be no peace in the world if the international community falters in the face of nuclear arms proliferation.”
Iran was entitled to nuclear power for civilian purposes, he said, “but if we allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons, we would incur an unacceptable risk to stability in the region and in the world”.
In a broader warning against the dangers of appeasement, the new French leader said: “Weakness and renunciation do not lead to peace. They lead to war.”
September 25th, 2007 at 2:13 pmSenator Webb is fast becoming my new hero. Bless him!!
September 25th, 2007 at 2:14 pmWay to go, Webb. I hope the other senators are listening to you, because the last thing they need is another foolish vote to haunt them for years.
When Congress voted to give Bush the authority he wanted to fight “the war on terror”, the country was still reeling from the 9/11 attacks. We were still more or less united behind an effort to make sure 9/11 never happened again, and we wanted to show the world we were united behind our leaders.
What’s different today? We are no longer in shock from a terrorist attack. We are weary (and outraged) of an invasion and occupation that has turned out to be (to most of us, anyway) a huge foreign policy blunder. We no longer trust Bush to do the right thing for the country. There will be no excuse for anyone who votes to beat the drums of war with Iran this time around.

.
Exley: If France is so concerned about what Iran is doing, then let them go to war with Iran. MYOB is what this country should be doing more of. In fact, by taking our eye off our own backyard, we’ve managed to destroy this country all the way around – infrastructure crumbling, middle class eroding, poverty levels rising, and a national debt that won’t be able to be paid for decades to come. Throwing good money after bad and not minding our back yard is precisely what’s wrong with this country right now. And you have the hubris to suggest that we join France now in this? What’s your budget like these days? Or have you joined the ranks of the “home employed” because you can’t afford the gas to get to work??
September 25th, 2007 at 2:26 pmIran was entitled to nuclear power for civilian purposes, he said, “but if we allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons, we would incur an unacceptable risk to stability in the region and in the worldâ€.

Comment by Exley — September 25, 2007 @ 2:13 pm
If we allow Iran to hack into our weather satellites and reverse the polarity so they create tornadoes and hurricanes and blizzards it would also be an unacceptable risk to stability in the world. As would Ahmedinejad’s proposal to encase Israel in a glossy LP Cover and fling it into the Phantom Zone. However, these Superman III and II-style scenarios are just as fictional as Iran’s Superman I-style nuclear weapons ambitions.
For the record, Superman IV is not canon and may not be cited for illustrative purposes.
September 25th, 2007 at 2:26 pmIn his maiden speech to the U.N. General Assembly, Sarkozy said: “There will be no peace in the world if the international community falters in the face of nuclear arms proliferation.â€
If the new leader of France really thinks this, then he should be taking on the USA, Israel, Pakistan, India, Russia…et al.
I don’t know where these people get their gall. If they don’t like someone they can’t have nuclear technology, but it they do like you, then you can? Who appointed them to be the judge and jury.
If Israel can have nuclear technology, then Iran sure as hell should have it too. Because the biggest threat to Iran right now is the bellicose Israel. I’m quite sure that Bush is trying to encourage Israel to nuke Iran and Israel just might do it. If they do, they will be dead as a nation because the rest of the world is not going to sit by and allow an unprovoked attack on Iran. As of this date, Iran has been very good about not allowing the US and Israel to provoke them into an incident.
Why do the Republicans want to start World War III? Don’t they care how badly that will reflect on our once great nation?
September 25th, 2007 at 2:28 pmKaty: I was just wondering the exact same thing myself. How did these spineless democrats permit this to even get to the floor with our flowing through the usual chain of command which would have to be the Armed Services Committee and Foreign Relations Committee.
This reeks of “home cookin’” to me and needs to immediately be quashed and investigated further to see who’s at the bottom of this rotting pile of flesh.
September 25th, 2007 at 2:28 pmFirst of all, it’s way past time for Lieberman to register as an agent for Israel. And he should immediately be removed from THIS committee:
“Senator Lieberman is a member of the Armed Services Committee, where he is Chairman on the Subcommittee on AirLand Forces and sits on the Subcommittees on Emerging Threats and Capabilities and Seapower. The Senate Armed Services Committee is responsible for all matters relating to defense policy of the United States, including oversight of the Department of Defense and the nation’s armed forces.”
I can’t immediately find out what other committees he’s served on during his four terms, but I would suggest an investigation whether this guy has ever leaked classified information to Israel.
Lastly, if there’s one saving grace of Gore not being recognized as the winner of the 2000 election, it’s that this idiot didn’t become VP.
September 25th, 2007 at 2:28 pmBilbo – precisely. He should be taking on all of us to have violated the nuclear arms treaty if he has any sense of personal integrity. Clearly, this is a Bush-contrived and influenced new French leader who may find himself gone before he gets an opportunity to move forward.

Why didn’t we fix the roads when we had record revenues in the ’90s and no war? I’ll tell you why. Because fixing roads isn’t glamorous enough for the politicians. I agree. For example, as a Minnesotan, we now have nearly 200 bridges found to inadequate or downright dangerous.
The good news? See above
The bad news? Our Governor, whom I call ‘mini-bush’ (Tim Pawlenty), turned down the 80-20 match for Federal DOT funds more than once. Ergo, no infrastructure improvements / replacements. Of course, the Gov can claim fiscal responsibility over welfare of the people, but that argument is now a strawman.
In fact, a 1 day special session for State legislators was just held, but on the condition that the I-35W bridge could not be addressed.
The kicker? If Bush vetoes the bill, all Federal dollars for the bridge will be gone.
Our new State motto: ‘Living with less in the land of Pawlenty’

September 25th, 2007 at 3:20 pmSince it seems that the MSM is more interested in putting words in the mouth of the president of a country that we are trying to fabricate reasons to attack than in allowing him to speak ,I thought it apprtopriate to present what this supposed hate monger had to say at Columbia himself .
MAHMOUD AHMADINEJAD: [translated] Why don’t we encourage more research on a historical event that has become the root, the cause, of many heavy catastrophes in the region in this time and age? Why shouldn’t there be more research about the root causes? That was my first question.
And my second question: well, given this historical event, if it is a reality, we need to still question whether the Palestinian people should be paying for it or not. After all, it happened in Europe. The Palestinian people had no role to play in it. So why is it that the Palestinian people are paying the price of an event they had nothing to do with?
The Palestinian people didn’t commit any crime. They had no role to play in the World War II. They were living with the Jewish communities and the Christian communities in peace at the time. They didn’t have any problems. And today, too, Jews, Christians and Muslims live in brotherhood all over the world in many parts of the world. They don’t have any serious problems.
But why is it that the Palestinians should pay a price, innocent Palestinians, for five million people to remain displaced or refugees abroad for sixty years? Or is this not a crime? Is asking about these crimes a crime in and by itself? Why should an academic, myself, face insults when asking questions like this? Is this what you call freedom and upholding the freedom of thought? “
September 25th, 2007 at 3:40 pmSince many people inquired, under Senate Rule XIV, when a Senator
demands two readings and there is objection to the measure’s second reading, the measure is placed directly on the Calendar of Business without reference to committee.
Clearly the repubs have found that these “Sense of the Senate” measures are a clever way to get around committee.
If only they focused this energy on serving our country instead of working tirelessly to make the other party look bad.

September 25th, 2007 at 6:08 pmWebb is a totally inconsistent idiot. Earlier this summer he (along with an overwhelming majority of the senate including the lefties’ darling Feingold) voted for a Lieberman ammendment condemning Iran for engaging in killing our troops in Iraq. He totally mischaracterizes the Kyle-Lieberman ammendment which puts Iran on notice that our patience is limited. It in fact offers Iran a graceful way out of military confrontation. Voting against this ammendment would only encourage Iran to escalate its provocations and increase the likelihood of an all-out nuclear war against Iran by either Israel or the US.
September 25th, 2007 at 7:49 pmOne thing for certain Senator Lieberman’s intents are malicious, his carefuly crafted Amendment puts the senator in a bind. Senator are going to have a very hard time with this amendment as the Israel Lobby will be out in force to make sure that it passes. Senators who do not vote for the Amendment will be punished. Do you believe the Lieberman – Kyl Amendment is crafted with backdoor for Congressional validation for military action? —-> http://www.youpolls.com/details.asp?pid=590
September 25th, 2007 at 9:39 pmListening to all the GOPerv talking points about the Iranian situation, it was a very eerie mirror of what happened in the lead up to the Iraq Quagmire.
1) The country is a threat to its neighbors
2) Ran by a cruel and oppressive dictatorship
3) They have all our oil under their country (ok so maybe I fibbed on this one)
4) and of course to seal the deal, THEY HAVE WMD PROGRAMS!!
Before the Iraq war President Cheney sends George to the UN to somewhat talk about the issue. Next all we need is someone who is willing to sacrifice their credibility and address the Security Council and hold up a vial of some mystery powder and attempt to sucker the world into following us in to another colossal blunder.
People should make no mistake that Iran is NOT Iraq. Iran is far more sophisticated, educated, “civilized” and armed than what the MSM or our government would like to let us realize. The consequences of our actions, should be engage in war, would be a disaster. Im appalled that knowing now, what this administration and its warmongering allies did to get us into Iraq, that Congress and the press are blindly being led to something much much worse.
God, America, I beg you, please….WAKE UP! WAKE UP! WAKE UP!
September 25th, 2007 at 9:56 pmwessev, good post…..May I add, in my opinion all those number’s now and since 2003 are an example of what our country has become.Sad we have be come the country that invade’s, occupy’s and killed off hundred’s of thousand’s of innocent people…..The shame these warmonger’s have brought to our country to will last forever…..Blessings
September 25th, 2007 at 10:29 pmThe breaking news yesterday that Bush is advising Hillary re the war on terror should come as no surprise – Hillary’s William Krystol’s gal
Watch the logic:
Neocon-antichrist William Krystol has already given Hillary his blessing. Hillary has promised AIPAC in her speeches to that group that she will use military force against Iran. That’s all Krystol needs – Hillary’s his gal
Thus: Bush and then Hillary give Iran the old one-two death punch. Krystol blessed this satanic pact and so Bush might even achieve orgasm with Hillary in the neocon warparty orgy
This is the neocon war party having bought out the Republicans (except the Paleos), the Democrats (except rascals like Kucinich), and ‘Independents’ (like the warmonger Lieberman)
Free Palestine and Free America from the Neocons – WE’RE GOING IN TO IRAN
At what point would a military commander have the duty to disobey an order from Bush? If someone had given me an order to nuke an Iranian base under the current circumstances way back when and I knew what I know now – I WOULDN’T F***ING DO IT
At what point should the military disobey this war criminal and just come on home and arrest his ass along with the Senate and House?
At what point will our MILITARY save us if our President, Sentate, and House has become, thru their cowardice as Americans, sold out to Israel, AIPAC, AEI, and the Neocons Lieberman and Lantos?
It’s time for a revolution – there will be less casualties than if we assault Iran
