White House backs down, withdraws CIA nominee.

The White House has withdrawn the nomination of John Rizzo to become General Counsel at the CIA. Rizzo’s nomination had elicited a fury of outrage from key senators and human rights and advocacy groups. The anger stemmed form Rizzo’s refusal at a June confirmation hearing to disavow his approval of a 2002 memo that stretched the definition of torture. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR), who spearheaded the efforts against Rizzo, said the White House should take some lessons from this before sending up its next nominee:

“I hope that the administration’s next nominee for the position demonstrates greater respect for the rule of law and a firmer commitment to making sure that our nation’s counterterrorism programs have the strong legal foundation that they deserve,” Wyden said.

It doesn’t matter, he’ll just recess appoint Alberto to give him some income.

Would you appoint someone who won’t allow you to continue breaking the law? I wouldn’t. There ya have it.

    Is Tony Snow still unemployed?
(other than filling in for Rumsfeld…)
He could offer as much effective counsel regarding intelligence as anyone within the current mis-administration.

I am reminded of the Spy Vs Spy toon found in Mad magazine. Alfred \/\/ Neumann is in charge…

  9. Zimzone says:

    #9,
Would Chertoff be in the white coat? Yeah, Lieberman would wear black.

Bush would be the one watching, but never getting his hands dirty.

  10. mongo says:

Democrats should come up with a list of individuals they consider suitable and give it to bush; the message being, pick from this list or don’t bother nominating anybody.

  11. JosephW says:

Well, we should all know by now that Bush will nominate someone who puts on a good show for Congress and then reveals his true colors the day after he’s confirmed.
