Spanish Notes Reveal Bush Was Hell-Bent On War, Despite Claiming ‘I’ve Not Made Up My Mind’»

aznarToday, the Spanish newspaper El Pais published a transcript of a discussion between President Bush and Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar in February 2003 in which Bush told Aznar that the U.S. would go to war with Iraq to disarm Saddam Hussein with or without a UN resolution:

“We must take him right now. We have shown an incredible degree of patience until now. There are two weeks left. In two weeks we will be militarily ready.”

Though Aznar asked Bush to “have a little patience” and urged, “It is very important to have a [UN] resolution,” Bush pushed for war throughout the meeting, telling the Spanish Prime Minister, “We will be in Baghdad by the end of March.”

Just a few days later, Bush insisted to the American public that war with Iraq was not a certainty:

BUSH: “I’ve not made up our mind about military action. Hopefully, this can be done peacefully.” [3/6/03]

BUSH: “We are doing everything we can to avoid war in Iraq. But if Saddam Hussein does not disarm peacefully, he will be disarmed by force.” [3/8/03]

Prior to going to war, Bush insisted he would get U.N. authorization. He said, “no matter what the whip count is,” the U.S. would go to the UN and “call for a vote.” But it’s clear Bush was never going to let the U.N. get in the way of his quest for war.

To this day, Bush has continued to insist that the “the United States did not choose war — the choice was Saddam Hussein’s.” In fact, as this conversation with Aznar illustrates, Bush had made his decision long before exhausting all other options.

  1. TripMaster Monkey Says:

How about now. Can we impeach now???

  2. Spudge Boy Says:

Does this mean we can talk about the Downing Street Minutes and the fact that the Bush cabal planned and carried out 9/11 in order to start a never ending war in the Middle East to drain our national treasury as his grandfather tried to do back in 1933?

Or are we still just pretend that none of this stuff is connected?

  3. Blackacre Says:

Let’s not forget that he lied when he said Saddam wouldn’t let the inspectors in and when he said we actually found WMDs. But he didn’t lie about a BJ, so he’s OK.

  4. katy Says:

yay… i think it’s just GREAT that all these WEASELS
are coming out of the wood work to ease their consciences…
and tell us what we’ve been SCREAMING for years…

    absolutely unf’inbelievable.

    what an awful day…

  5. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

Trip: “How about now. Can we impeach now???”

Not without some significant cooperation from repubs.

  6. linda Says:

    Can we impeach now???

nope. not a chance. pelosi was interviewed by blitzer yesterday asking that very question. she emphatically said impeachment is not an option.

these people have all profoundly betrayed their oaths to office, this country and the people.

did you see robert byrd’s hissyfit for the code pink protesters. granted, they’re annoying, but his contempt for them was was undisguised. considering the hill reaction to the moveon dust-up, it’s clear that congress has nothing but utter contempt for the people; and particularly despises the activists.

  7. Keith Says:

The Downing Street Memo already told us the policy of invasion was set in July 2002. Paul O’Neill already told us the policy of invasion was set in early 2002. Richard Clark already told us. Bob Woodward already told us.

Since every reason given for the war was a lie—it’s the only thing that makes sense.

  8. RUCerious Says:

Jay Inslee keeps saying Impeachment would be too divisive…

As if lying to the American public to launch a never ending war and occupation is afternoon high tea?

  9. MCMetal Says:

Impeachment is too divisive , but creating a trillion dollar deficit , allowing New Orleans to drown , further empowering and rewarding the wealthy , and constantly bullshitting without taking a breath is reaching out and trying to unite the country ?

  10. chimpeach Says:

Throw this one on the impeachment stack. File it next to the Downing Street memos.

If there isn’t an impeachment before Bush is out of office, and assuming he doesn’t resign, all the Democratic candidates for president should be pressed to make sure he’s prosecuted for this stuff afterwards. No pardons. No letting bygones be bygones. Burn this bastard.

  11. Nature Rules Says:

Well said. The country, or rather, the people that care, one way or another, must pound this point over and over and over.

  12. kevo Says:

Our unbeloved current president is a liar plain and simple. Multiple instances, and empirical evidence abounds. The man SCOTUS initially put into our highest executive office by a 5-4 vote has no moral fiber. He will lie to get his way, and the whole world knows his false witnesses. Now we have ourselves a boil on our bodypolitik that no one seems to know how to lance.

I believe until we Americans can get past the hackery of Newt Gringrich’s Republican party we will continue to be caught in a vicious cycle of fear and authoritarianism as Gringrinch’s Pandora’s Box of visceral politics and mind bending partisanship has caused our great democracy to crash and burn under the cruel and incompetent Bushite version of such unflattering politics.

I vow to help vote out all Republicans in the ‘08 election cycle. The party that brought us a Congressional rubber stamp for this WH and its lawless power grab needs more than anything to be held accountable for its foolduggery. Vote the Rascals out in ‘08! Kevo

  13. Badger Says:

Bush HAD to Invade Iraq when he did. He couldn’t let Hans Blix and the inspectors find NO WEAPONS of MASS DESTRUCTION. That would spoil his plans.

  14. bilbobaggins Says:

But he chose to deliberately misled us. Is deception a preferable quality in a leader?

Your president (he isn’t mine and never has been mine) is a Sociopath. They can’t tell a lie from the truth. The man is bat-shit insane and he is going to destroy the world with his megalomania. And unfortunately the Democrats are helping him do it.

I am no longer a Democrat.

  15. bilbobaggins Says:

Not without some significant cooperation from repubs.
Comment by Ret. Col. Jack Ripper

Or some courage on Nancy Pelosi’s part. As long as she keeps impeachment off the table Bush will continue to thumb his nose at the world. The man is crazy and is quite likely to get us all blown up.

  16. OxyCon Says:

    Nice post, Ali.
Let me add these other choice Bush quotes, which demonstrate the mendacity of George W. Bush:

“F–k Saddam,” Bush said. “We’re taking him out.” March 2002

“You said we’re headed to war in Iraq — I don’t know why you say that. I hope we’re not headed to war in Iraq. I’m the person who gets to decide, not you. I hope this can be done peacefully.” - Bush, December 31, 2002

“I’m a war president. I make decisions here in the Oval Office in foreign-policy matters with war on my mind. Again, I wish it wasn’t true, but it is true.” - Bush, Feb 8, 2004

  17. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

A repub president starts an illegal war. Repubs in congress block all efforts by Dems to end the war. Repubs will not cooperate in any effort to censure or impeach the repub president.

The modern progressive reacts to these events: “I am no longer a Democrat.”

  18. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

“Or some courage on Nancy Pelosi’s part.”

Nancy Pelosi is a pragmatic realist. Pelosi is not Don Quixote. Pelosi is pragmatic enough to not waste her time on a losing, purely political statement. Without republican cooperation, any impeachment proceeding is a meaningless political exercise.

  19. The Republic of Stupidity Says:

I’ve said for YEARS, the man has gone psychotic. He’s sheared off from reality. Probably doesn’t even know what planet he’s on anymore.

    That’s terrifying.

What makes this even worse is seeing the number of Repubs who willing march behind him, and just how many Dems are terrified to stand up to him.

    Hellllooooo, WW III!

  20. The Republic of Stupidity Says:

Without republican cooperation, any impeachment proceeding is a meaningless political exercise.

Comment by Ret. Col. Jack Ripper — September 26, 2007 @ 8:00 pm

And so the insanity rages on, unchecked.

  21. Guido OBGYN Lover Says:

More proof Bush is indeed a war criminal.
How dare him tell Americans one thing and world leaders another?

Are we not mature enough for Bush’s deep thoughts?

  22. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

“…Dems are terrified to stand up to him.”

Dems understand our corporate media. They’re not stupid. They know too well that anything they do is portrayed in the worst possible light and that Repubs get a free pass and most of the air time.

  23. had enough Says:

    This is not the
first time we have heard this and we all know it is true.
What would happen if say we spread around a rumor that: The Military will go on strike if Bush orders an attack on Iran?

    Just a wishful thought.

It will have to come from the masses. The media cannot ignore the masses.

  25. drago Says:

    Yawn.

So Bush is a total and pathological liar and someone who has absolutely no regard for the Constitution of the United States of America.

Tell us something we didn’t already know.

  26. TripMaster Monkey Says:

    had enough sez:

What would happen if say we spread around a rumor that: The Military will go on strike if Bush orders an attack on Iran?

To echo a popular sentiment from the 60’s:

“Suppose they gave a war and nobody came?”

  27. Juan C. Says:

Ret Col, I guess you are right.

There is NO progressive party in the US. Dems are not progressive or even liberal.

Clinton bombed 5 countries. He violated countless of international laws, he bombed relentlessly Baghdad. He bombed people in Afghanistan. The media said it was an attack to terrorists bases (oh, yeah!).

He bombed an aspirin factory in Sudan…that wasnt a mistake, that was a retaliation to the people of Sudan after the attack to the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. Just like the use of White Phosphorous in Fallujah against civilian population was a retaliation to the 4 US troops hanged and burned.

Dems are in NO possible way, the left. The left is about the working class, socialism, etc. Dems care about power and they know that maintaining an agressive foregin policy against other countries in the world they will keep the votes flowing, cuz Americans tend to think that strong = agressive. And we all know what happened to other people who thought that way.

  28. Juan C. Says:

BTW, Aznar is just another mediocre piece of sh*t that tried to put the blame of March 11 on basques rebels to pursue their extermination with the approval of the “civilized” world.

  29. Arne Langsetmo Says:

… and in other news, dog bites man.

Anyone with any sentience and who was barely payign attention to the run-up to the war and the shenanigans happening (in the U.N. and else where) knew that Dubya had a hard-on for the war. That was obvious in September of 2002 even.

But maybe some (more) of the folks that said “I just don’t believe that Dubya would do such a thing will now start to acknowledge the truth. Dubya’s a serial liar, and that includes the words “and” and “the”….

    Cheers,

  30. jamie Says:

my fav part of his quote: “I’ve not made up our mind…”

  31. Keith Says:

…and in other news, bears do it in the woods and the pope is a confirmed Catholic.

  32. Jackie Says:

Now we know the plan to invade Iraq was in the works long before any vote. Yes Pakistan President told the truth and he and other leaders were threaten by the United States. Chavez was right about Bush and so was the Iran President. Looks like the big lie is now public but still the criminal White House is protected by dumb Americans and paid Media. No matter what lies come out that the GOP has told Americans act like it’s ok. Now when the White House bombs Iran and the World Leaders at the UN take Iran’s side and stop the United States of America then maybe things in our country will change. Thousands of soldiers are dying for the greed of oil by the White House and no one cares just let them keep being killed. Three more died today but who cares. Taxpayers money is going to Blackwater killer contractor not to health care for American children but that’s ok too. Americans would rather bring our national debt which is now 9 Trillion dollars to maybe 20 Trillion if Bush is allowed to continue.

  33. Veritas Says:

More prima facie evidence of a president lying to the congress and the people of this country to make the case for war. I believe this would definitely constitute “high crimes” according to impeachment guidelines, don’t you?

  34. Veritas Says:

Let’s face it: Everyone knows that Bush lied to make the case for the war and the complicit mainstream media cooperated to bringing the lie to the american public. I think it’s time we bring the mainstream media to the court room for their complicity in “aiding and abetting” Bush’s “high crime” of lying to congress and the people whom he serves.

  35. Svlad Jelly Says:

Aren’t it some sort o’ crime to Lie to the American people? Where them Dems at, by god?

  36. civil behavior Says:

So exactly when do Americans get off their phones and up off their butts and depose King George?

    Any guesses?

    Darnit that Bush.

Is that better Ali? Do you like these words better?

  40. rollotomasi Says:

Bush has been calling for patience ever since he declared “Mission accomplished.” This excerpt translated from the El Pais article on Bush and Spanish PM Aznar’s meeting shows the amount of patience and diplomacy Bush had in mind leading up to the war:

Bush: This is like the Chinese water torture. We have to put an end to it.

Aznar: I agree, but would be good to include the maximum number of possible people. Have a little patience.

Bush: Countries as Mexico, Angola, Chile and Cameroon should know that what is in play is the security of the the United States and to act with a sense of friendship toward us. Lakes should know that the agreement of free commerce with Chile is alert of confirmation in the Senate and that a negative attitude in this theme would be able to endanger that ratification…

Bush: My patience is exhausted. I do not think to go beyond the half of March.

Aznar: I do not ask that you have an infinite patience. Simply that you do every possible thing so that all is square.

Aznar: Tony Blair would want to arrive to March 14.

Aznar: I prefer the 10th. This is like the play of bad police and good police. It does not matter to me to be the bad police and that Blair be the good one.

Another interesting exchange that points to Bush’s simple-minded arrogance and certitude:

Aznar. The unique thing that worries me of you is your optimism.

Bush. I am an optimist because I believe that I am certain. I am in peace with myself. We have corresponded to face a serious threat against the peace. It irritates me a lot to contemplate the insensitivity of the Europeans on the sufferings that Saddam Hussein inflicts to the Iraqis. Perhaps because it is dark, distant and Moslem, many Europeans think that all is good with him …

Throughout their exchange, Bush shows none of the solemn reluctance of committing his country and others to war that one should expect of the leader of the free world. This was a President bent on war, who had no desire or hope to work things out diplomatically. Also notice that the Bush made no mention whatsoever of spreading democracy or combating terrorism as arguments. The President of the United States also made no mention of Shia, Sunni and Kurd factions, daily news fare today, mainly because he was not aware of these different sects before his decision, clearly already made before his discussions with Anzar, to invade.

Congress should start impeachment proceedings tomorrow on Bush/Cheney.

  41. ennealogic Says:

    Nature Rules said,

The media has been ignoring the masses. They’ve gotten quite good at it, actually.

As for impeachment, I’m beginning to believe the real reason the Democrats don’t begin hearings is, they want to exercise some of these massive powers that Bush (and Cheney) have claimed for themselves. I firmly believe if left unchallenged until the next election, this unconstitutional exercise of executive (and war-time) power will continue no matter who gets [s]elected next.

  42. Juan C. Says:

Rollotomasi, just one observation: Lakes is Lagos. Names are spelled in their native tongues.

  43. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

Juan: “Clinton bombed 5 countries. He violated countless of international laws, he bombed relentlessly Baghdad. He bombed people in Afghanistan. The media said it was an attack to terrorists bases (oh, yeah!).”

I wouldn’t call two or three cruise missle attacks on what the UN thought could be remaining nuclear facilities “relentless.” And, the cruise missle attack in Afghanistan was an al Qaeda training facility at a time intelligence indicated Osama bin laden was present.

Juan: “He bombed an aspirin factory in Sudan…that wasnt a mistake”

OK, CIA intelligence told him they were in the business of producing nerve gas and subsequent tests of the grounds indicated that was the case.

And, I would point out to you that some Democrats are traditional, new deal liberals. Some are concerned with the working class. That’s almost all John Edwards talks about these days. I think it’s a gross generalization to say that “all Democrats care about is power.” Of the two major parties, the Dems are traditionally the party that represents the working class. They are historically the party that supports unions. I agree that the party is dominated by centrists, though.

  44. Juan C. Says:

    Ret Col:

    Operation Desert Strike

Two Air Combat Command B-52s flew 14,000 miles -— 34 hours non-stop -— to launch 13 conventional air-launched cruise missiles against targets in Iraq. This longest bombing mission in history demonstrated national resolve and cemented US air superiority in the no-fly zones, by putting weapons on targets.

The following day, a second strike of 17 Tomahawks from destroyers Russell (DDG 59), Hewitt (DD 966), Laboon and nuclear-powered attack submarine Jefferson City (SSN 759) was conducted.

Juan C. - did you consider the possibility that I just may have overlooked the President of Chile’s (Ricardo Lagos) name being auto-translated from Lagos (which is Lakes in English)? But good catch. (Also got Aznar’s name wrong once at the end, FYI.)

Juan Cristóbal, right on the spot in both cases. And Aznar’s Popular (ha!) Party has been dragging the Basque terrorist’s lies for three years now to hide that they misinformed the public in purpose to hide the disastrous consequences of being the second poodle of Bush lunacy in Iraq. Lies that have been demonstrated all false in courts after that.

  51. Roger_Roger Says:

    Yawn,

Old news. The socialist didn’t want us to liberate the women and minority groups in Iraq while the repugs wanted to secure the flow of Oil. blah blah blah

  52. A Patriot Acting Says:

    re: Bush and patience-
Anybody else notice that whenever Bush wants to further milk one of his illegal/unpopular policies he demands patience(the surge comes directly to mind) over and over with his “wait and see” BS? But when he wants to bully and scare his opposition he puts forth the false notion that if we don’t act right now, the entire world will implode (invading Iraq w/out probable cause, FISA laws, the Patriot act, and now Iran). Don’t try to even question his haste, because Americans WILL DIE! Ironic how these “hurry-up and give me what I want” demands that he makes are practically always directly preceded by some “credible threat” to mankind that ALWAYS turns out to be pure political BS.

  53. A Patriot Acting Says:

    RogerDodger-
Where was the iminent threat from Iraq??? WMD’s? Bush KNEW there were none and wouldn’t wait for the inspectors to confirm what his intel already told him. Can humanitarian violations that were going on for decades suddenly become more important than stopping al queda and capturing/killing Bin Laden? Why can’t you Reps comprehend that your Dear Leader intentionally took his eye off the ball to go after a personal vendeta with Hussein? What would you neocon nutjobs have to say if Clinton were in that position, chasing down Osama in Aphganistan and suddenly shifted gears and pulled a majority of our troops and intel people off the mission to go into Darfur (which by the way was a far worse humanitarian disaster than Iraq and all but completely ignored by your president). Bush, what a HUMANITARIAN. A real champion of democracy. This president of yours (I refuse to call him mine) has broken more human rights laws and done more to singlehandedly undermine the Constitution and civil liberties than anyone in the history of this Nation. If HIS acts aren’t the text book definitions of Terrorism and treason then the laws as written mean nothing.

  55. Mugsy Says:

And once again, SILENCE from the media on this revelation.

  56. Katie Says:

It was always apparent to me that Bush wasn’t waiting for a resolution, and if it was obvious to me then why couldn’t the US media see that? It’s about seeing what you want to see. But nevermind. What I can’t quite figure out is, what the actual rush was. I mean, you could practically see the beads of sweat on Bush’s forehead during that time…he was so hurried and even a little worried about not making it to Iraq by some kind of unseen deadline. Was a military window closing and if we didn’t get in there by a certain month we’d have to wait until next year? That’s what I used to assume, but I think it’s more than that. They REALLY REALLY needed to get in there, and the whole ball of yarn made the trip with Bush - the military, the corporations, the neocons, the ex-pats, all of it. The gravy train cranked up once we were in, and Bush had a vaccum hooked up to the US Treasury, money funneled everywhere, to everyone. Much of it unaccounted for. What was it…..did Bush need a slush fund and NEEDED that war for it? But who or what was the slush fund for? Was it something as simple as feeding the global corporations? Or something more specific? What was really going on.

  57. Luis M Says:

    Sweet Freaking Crawling Zombie Jesus.

Liberate the women??? From what, from being able to attend to school and wear pants? From letting them walk in a Baghdad street alone without risking getting stoned???

Roger_Roger has to be a parody troll, stupidity in these amounts just couldn’t possibly be real.

  58. Mad Martigan Says:

Does anybody else get the impression that nearly half of the Democratic congress critters have been victims of warrantless wiretapping? Have they had that dreaded late night visit from men in black? What else can expalin the recent votes? Why waste time on an ad in the NY Times, when the ad was true? How can this take priority over supporting the troops?

Don’t expect any help from the media on these issues. 90% of the media is owned by a small handful of billionaires, all of whom are “In The Club”. The Truth is not hard to find, too many of us just don’t look.

Bah..!! Toss them out and start over.

  59. Mad Martigan Says:

    Comment by Katie — September 27, 2007 @ 11:15 am

Growing a private army was the primary goal. There are more ‘contractors’ in Iraq than US soldiers; better paid and better equipped. The New World Order will require subservience to Halliburton enforced by Blackwater. Who will stop them after they’ve cleaned out the US treasury and shredded the armed forces?

As Bush told us early on, “Yer either with us, or against us”…

  60. jpoke42 Says:

Did I miss something, I haven’t found anything on TP about Saddam offering to LEAVE Iraq before the invasion for a $1B payoff and any info about WMD he may have had. Think about it people… Sure the whole WMD thing could have been negotiated out and think about how cheap that would have been.

No, Bush got a boner from the thought of using his military toys and now the Dems won’t even cut off the funding.

  61. PaulD Says:

And now he is hell-bent on war with Iran, despite having his apologists claim that we are actively seeking a diplomatic solution. The Bush administration’s propaganda masters are hard at work making the case for war to the American people and they aren’t even the least bit shy about it.
