Speaking at the National Press Club yesterday, CBS anchor Katie Couric “pulled back the curtain on her personal views of the war in Iraq,” stating that Americans were “misled” into invading Iraq:
“Everyone in this room would agree that people in this country were misled in terms of the rationale of this war,” said Couric, adding that it is “pretty much accepted” that the war in Iraq was a mistake.
“I’ve never understood why [invading Iraq] was so high on the administration’s agenda when terrorism was going on in Afghanistan and Pakistan and that [Iraq] had no true connection with al Qaeda.” […]
Couric [criticized] “the feeling that we’d be welcomed as liberators and didn’t need to focus as much on security.” She added, “I’d feel totally comfortable saying any of that at some point, if required, on television.”
Couric’s views may come as a disappointment to conservative aides on Capitol Hill, who say that she is “our sweetheart” for her Iraq reporting. Reporting from Iraq last month, Couric aired several “puff pieces” which echoed the Bush administration’s talking points.

Even a blind pig picks up an acorn every once in awhile.
What’s next? Will Little Britty Hume and Little Billy Krystol turn on GDumbya? Will Little Chrissy Wallace start asking hard questions of GDumbya, Darth Cheney and the rest of the Keystone Kops?
September 26th, 2007 at 1:05 pmShe’s still spinning it for the administration. The Iraq war was a deliberate atrocity–not a mistake.
September 26th, 2007 at 1:07 pm#4, I agree. Dan Rather wouldn’t have waited for “permission” to report the facts.
September 26th, 2007 at 1:14 pmSmearing of Couric begins in 4…3…2…
September 26th, 2007 at 1:14 pmStill……I’d put a flag under her and do her for old glory. :-)
September 26th, 2007 at 1:16 pmCouric did tell the truth in her Iraq report, but nobody focused on it and it was buried. She said that she was only being shown what the military wanted her to see.
September 26th, 2007 at 1:20 pmShe was their “sweetheart” last week. This week, not so much.
But, let’s give her a little break. I don’t see any of the other anchors saying things like this.
September 26th, 2007 at 1:20 pmEdward R. Murrow — where are you now that we need you?
September 26th, 2007 at 1:20 pmcouric doesn’t have the firepower to ‘blast’ anyone. she’s a toadie and toadies only repeat what they’re told.
good luck in whatever you decide to do after you get the axe.
September 26th, 2007 at 1:21 pmWhy not say it now? Iy is what you beleive to be true isn’t it? You gutless wonder.
September 26th, 2007 at 1:26 pmSo what do you think the chances are that CBS will allow her to express her opinion on the air? My bet is on next to none.
September 26th, 2007 at 1:42 pmWTF Katie? Why don’t you use the Google and look up PNAC. What do you mean “I’ve never understood why [invading Iraq] was so high on the administration’s agenda”? Damn, I’m not even a reporter and I knew they’ve been planning to go into Iraq for some time now.
September 26th, 2007 at 1:44 pmAnd why don’t you follow the money to see just who’s getting rich off this war.
I call BS. Katie is back peddling as fast as she can after showing her true colors when she played cheerleader-for-the-surge during her report from Iraq.
Time to dump her from CBS. Hire Lara Logan - she’s got class and integrity. Two things Katie has never had.
Katie has made the history books with the lowest rating ever. Now it’s about money the CBS people are losing. Katie will say anything now to get people to watch her show. Katie got the job because she would always attack anyone who spoke up against the White House criminal policy. Now with the news that the White House directed her on what to report before the famous White House aka General Petraeus report was clear who Katie is really working for. The bad news was soldiers had already emailed honest media and family members with proof of what was really going on.
Now Katie is she says telling the truth Wow and we can believe her right? Why wasn’t she telling the truth before when she said it was the truth but it really was a lie. Who’s on first and who’s on second?
This is all about Money and CBS is losing alot.
September 26th, 2007 at 1:46 pmHer “reports” from Iraq are the main reason that I hesitate to even serf to her broadcast at 6:30 p.m..

September 26th, 2007 at 2:13 pmNo street cred! As a reporter, she’s responsible for what she says, just like Dan Rather was. You can’t speak out of both sides of your mouth and have ANY credibility. She’s inferring ‘I’m OK, I was only reading a script’? Is she a reporter or just a “script reader? The answer is apparent!!!!!!!!!!!!!
September 26th, 2007 at 2:20 pmRagingGirl: “Hire Lara Logan - she’s got class and integrity.”
Lara Logan is awsome, but as long as Sumner Redstone is running Viacom, I don’t see anyone like Logan in the anchor chair. Remember, Redstone stated publically in 2004 that although he was a lifelong Democrat, he had to do what was best for Viacom and Bush was better for his profits because Repubs favored deregulation of the media and Kerry was not amenable to any more deregulation. Sumner will have to answer for his public statements in the Dan Rather civil lawsuit.
September 26th, 2007 at 2:26 pmshe must already know she’s getting fired, or she’d never have said that.
give her at least a half-point, for having said what she did in a forum she new would make it to the public, albeit not straight from her on her newscast.
September 26th, 2007 at 2:34 pmOh, Katie…. my God, how you’re embarrassing me!!
Sweetheart, you don’t “understand” how or why we got mislead into this war…?
It’s called O-I-L, dear.
Good grief. Pass me my Unknown American bag, please!
September 26th, 2007 at 2:34 pmWell, well, well, whichever way the wind blows, Katie.
Congratulations, I guess, now that you’re safely back in the States and away from the clutches of the beloved Petraeus you can speak your piece.
September 26th, 2007 at 3:01 pmIs she not the same person who said in Fahrenheit 9/11 that “Navy Seals rock!?”. Not exactly an unbiased view of how she felt about the U.S. invasion of Iraq.
September 26th, 2007 at 3:07 pmIs Gummy Mouth finally going to get fired? Is this why she is speaking her “true” feelings about the war?
She’s a corporate MSM whore. Who cares about her!
September 26th, 2007 at 3:41 pmYou know we are in trouble when they start dumping the blame on ol’ dimwit Bush. As if he was ever in charge of anything important. He’s been managed from day one.
He’s the lightning rod, the stooge, the patsy — always has been.
September 26th, 2007 at 4:12 pmFirst they chastised her because she is a working mom who traveled to dangerous Iraq. Then they loved her because she repeated their talking points after she returned from Iraq. Today they will surely take her off their favored status list again.
Frankly, I don’t think she is a serious journalist and her trip to Iraq was to give her and her news show some needed credibility, but anytime someone speaks against Bush’s war in Iraq all isn’t lost.
September 26th, 2007 at 4:26 pmI don’t need to know Katie’s personal opinion about anything. There has been far to much of that in the media. A news anchor should be able to tell the viewers the facts of any story in a way the presents the full coverage of any event. Instead the media just reports talking points.
Ex. of what the media does
“Today, at the White House daily press gathering, WH spokesman Tony Snow said the WH wasn’t sure if or how 9 billion dollars was lost somewhere in Iraq but said the WH was looking into the matter.”
Ex. of what the media should being doing.
“Today, at the White House daily press gathering, WH spokesman Tony Snow said the WH wasn’t sure if or how 9 billion dollars was lost somewhere in Iraq but said the WH was looking into the matter.” Our reporters found the explanation given by the WH to be suspect so we did some investigating and have discovered that there are numerous inconsistancy’s with the WH story and the pentagons story about who was in charge of this money and where and how it was obtained, and taken. It appears that there may have been much more than mismanagement by the Pentagon and the WH regarding the missing billions, and the possibilty of fraud and theft could be involv in this event. You can be sure we will have more on this important story tomorrow and every day until we have discovered the location of the missing billions in Iraq.
September 26th, 2007 at 6:08 pmKatie dear, Leftside Annie is right. It’s spelt O-I-L. It’s not a mistake. It’s very, very deliberate. It’s not a failure. To our oil administration, it is a success.
The US uses 25% of the world’s oil. We are now sitting in Iraq (#2 oil reserves) and in between Saudi Arabia (#1) and Iran (#3).
September 26th, 2007 at 7:21 pmI believe Ms. Couric has been part of the “news” for quite some time now and I never once heard her ask any hard questions of this administration, especially when they planned to invade Iraq. Give me a break, Katie! Where was your voice back then?!? Too little, way too late.
September 26th, 2007 at 8:43 pmi am so tired of this word MISLED.. its LIED.. LIED LIED!
September 27th, 2007 at 12:59 amWell Couric…now you can tell your audience things I’ve known for years. Start by bringing up the PNAC agenda..
September 27th, 2007 at 5:10 am.
I wonder when her Brittney piece will be out?
.
September 27th, 2007 at 6:38 am.
My Couric translator reads: I FAILED TO DO MY JOB
September 27th, 2007 at 6:40 amEvery cheerleader for the war is backpedaling now? All of them knew from day 0 that was a blunder? And no one said anything against a so evidently illegal and badly planned war? Traitors all…
