Fleischer Callously Tells Dead Soldier’s Mom ‘There Are Going To Be A Lot More Mothers’ Like You»

Yesterday, Ari Fleischer, former White House Press Secretary and current board member of the White House front group Freedom’s Watch, appeared on MSNBC to defend a recent ad showing an injured Iraq veteran saying “they attacked us, and they will again.”

During the segment, host Norah O’Donnell showed Fleischer a video of a mother whose son was killed in Iraq. In the ad, the mother states:

Ari Fleischer helped to deliver this country to the war in Iraq through a campaign of ignorance, negligence, and arrogance. Since then, we’ve heard the sad truth. … And the weapons of mass destruction? My son Sherwood died protecting the Iraq Survey Group while they looked for the weapons.

Fleischer expressed no sympathy for the mother, instead using her grief as platform to spew more war-mongering rhetoric, alleging that all mothers would be at risk of losing their children if we leave Iraq:

Well, my fear is that unless we win in Iraq, there are going to be a lot more mothers who lose a lot more children. And that’s why we cannot afford to lose in Iraq. … There is going to be an attack on America. … It very well may be in Iraq.

Fleischer’s callousness is not new. Last month, he admitted he did not know the name of the wounded veteran who appeared in his own ad. Fleischer and his Bush surrogates doled out $15 million to run the ad nationally.

Digg It!

OK, then why are we spending billions in Iraq rather than strengthening our own defenses here at home?

so ari thinks there are going to be a lot more mothers who lose a lot more children while looking for wmd’s that never turn up?

    No, POS.

Your fear is that people start realizing how every single US military action, covert or open, is decided from Corps offices, figuring out the next easy target so the cash keeps flowing from the working class to the military and oil companies bank accounts, while spreading the fear of imminents attacks among the US population.

Somebody remember that Sandinistas were 2 days away from Texas? How there was imminent danger against the US from a bunch of rebels in the jungle?

Somebody remember the imminent destruction that Saddam posed even after the relentless bombing since Gulf War?

Somebody remember the imminent danger of Grenada, Vietnam, Cuba, East Timor, and yes…Russia.

The level of American stupidity is astonishing.

  7. Leftside Annie Says:

Eh. Who cares as long as it’s someone else’s kid who dies to line our neocon pockets…??

    These people make me sick.

I’d like to send Bush, Cheney, Condiliar — all of them — to Iraq; better yet, drop them off in the middle of Baghdad.

  8. seamus Says:

What a scum-bag. Ari Fleischer doesn’t have the guts to fight anyone but defenseless civilians. If he was forced too join the army he’d be a deserter like his good buddy in the WH. Despicable war mongering neo-con prick.

  9. Uncle Ho Says:

    Your ‘compassionate conservatism’ at work.

  10. dim wit Says:

“There is going to be an attack on America. … It very well may be in Iraq.”

Does this comment even make any sense? When did Iraq become the 51st state?

  11. upside99 Says:

I guess Ari is only following the well-worn Repug approach: Attack the messenger and nothing matters except the NeoCon Agenda.

I wonder if Ari ever took advantage of his Jewish Day of Atonement. My guess, is he had too much to atone for and didn’t give a sh!t anyway.

Win what? Who’s the enemy? Is it the Sunnis? Is it the Shiites? If we are only fighting Al Qaeda, then why are these indigenous people of Iraq killing our soldiers? And why are they klling each other? Civil war anyone?

    This is FUBAR.

  16. Zimzone Says:

Doesn’t Ari need to leave now & make more money?

They must be paying him pretty well to sit on ‘Freedom’s Watch’.

I wish Neotruds were as clever at governing as they are at making up two word catch phrases. I guess two words are the maximum their brains can absorb.

This resembles Monday’s post about Marsha (R-TN), who couldn’t name the last dead soldier in her congressional district, but had a whole lot to say about MoveOn’s ad.

  17. linda Says:

hey, ari’s pulling down the big bucks these days. when you finally reach his level of suckness, you have abandoned any sense of empathy or remorse for your own personal complicity in this catastrophe.

fleischer is a vile pig who deserves the karma awaiting him.

  18. Zimzone Says:

Word has it that’s Ari in the pig suit in the bathroom stall.

    Comment by Juan C

That is so true. After all the misleading statements, lies, obfuscation, distractions you would think we would start to ‘get it’, but we don’t. I speak to many people around the world, and they all remark about the same thing as yourself: “Why do you people still allow the lies to go unchallenged?” I do not have a good answer for them.

I firmly believe we are a lazy bunch. Too lazy to care about our democracy, too lazy to care about the Constitution, too lazy to care about the criminal enterprise squatting in our White House. A strong democracy requires diligence and scrutiny. Most in the US are displaying none of those qualities right now, sigh…I really want my country back.

  20. Coffins Draped with a Flag Says:

So when will Ari Fleischer volunteer to fight in Iraq? Wonder how his mother would feel if Ari came home in a coffin draped in a flag?

  21. missmolly Says:

Ah — another neocon who tells us (with a straight face, yet!) that we will be overrun with terrorists in our streets if we don’t keep an ample supply of our troops (bait!) in Iraq for the terrorists to kill over there.

Why doesn’t he realize how stupid this sounds? And, even more bewildering, why are roughly a quarter of Americans still swallowing this crap?

  22. had enough Says:

Then Fleischer you and every member of your family go fight in this illegal invasion/massacre now occupation you call war. I am sick to death of some in the human race finding it OK to use others in this horrific act over LIES that will benefit big oil.

  23. WaltTheMan Says:

It is appropiate that Ari’s surname translates to “butcher”.

She would be so proud of little Ari, for giving his life for the Motherland …. Israel.

  25. Erroll Says:

    #16-Tom

Well said. I was about to post basically the same thing that you did. If the Democrats had an ounce of brains, and integrity, they would point out that those fearsome terrorists only comprise 2 per cent of those forces who are fighting against the U.S. and coalition forces in Iraq. Again, that figure is 2, not 92, per cent. But the mainstream media rarely rebuts the propaganda that superpatriots like Fleischer spew forth.

  26. SP Biloxi Says:

Yup, and this is coming from an ignorant former White House secretary who never served in the military. A very insensitive comment. Draft Ari Fleischer!

  27. Krazny Says:

Sometime in 2003, shortly before Bush declared mission accomplished.

  28. tombaker Says:

ordinary folks don’t appreciate the depth to which Ari and his ilk don’t care about them. that woman’s dead son is no more important to Dubbie and Ari than some Iraqi woman’s dead son.

  29. Veritas Says:

Ari Fleischer: Card-Carrying member of PNAC - the Neo-Fascist organization which has destroyed this democracy.

His comments were so insensitive and unfeeling. Where they intended to make her feel better under the “misery loves company” adage??

  30. Will Says:

You’re upset that your kid is dead? Maybe you shouldn’t have let him join the military… see, it’s your fault. Now STFU.

    /sarcasm

  31. Veritas Says:

I think we should pack them all up and ship them over to Baghdad! The entire cadre of criminals called Bushco, the sycophantic, complicit Congress and the whoring mainstream media. They’ve all contributed to the destruction of this democracy.

  32. Veritas Says:

Krazny: Iraq became the 51st state when Bush renamed this country the “homeland” ala Reichstag fame.

  33. hellinabucket Says:

If Ari Truly believes his own tripe then he should be demanding that Bush decalre a draft. That rationing of oil, gas, food and other essentials take place. He should be requesting tax increases and bonds to help pay for the fight of our lifetime.

He won’t be because he doesn’t believe in what he’s saying and he doesn’t understand on what it would take to complete what he’s spouting.

It’s actually the 54th state, after Denial, Delusion, and Grandeur.

Strangely enough, they’re all red states. Go figure.

  36. Starve-A-Bush_Feed-A-Beaver Says:

“There is going to be an attack on America. … It very well may be in Iraq.”

So does this explain what Bush means when he says that if we don’t beat them in Iraq, they will follow us home? Is Iraq now home? Is home now defined as any place in the world where Bush sends the troops to be sitting ducks and human shields in the middle of a civil war?

Ari Fleischer - born October 13, 1960 (age 46). Turned 18 in 1978. Cold War - not important enough for him to enlist. Gulf War - not important enough for him to enlist. Iraq War - important enough to tell other people to fight.

  39. CT Voter Says:

There is going to be an attack on America.

Would someone please notify Homeland Security, and please have the FBI arrest Ari Fleischer for threatening the US?

  40. cookie jill Says:

    Draft Ari.

  41. Nevar Says:

Remembering that Ari Fleischer was granted immunity from prosecution in the Scooter Libby affair, I’m wondering who is now jerking his strings as he emerges as a mercenary for Bush and Cheney.
    Ari knows a lot.

My 9 year old uses “What if’s”.

There was no rationale to do what we did. We could have squeezed the nut from both the North and the south like we were doing. At that time, Iran was aiding us in destroying the Taliban in Afghanistan. That should have been the focus.

I often ask my 7 year old niece why she did not do something when her parents, teachers or I told her too. And her answer is usually, “I don’t know.” I guess if we stick our heads in the sand, everythng will be alright.

I do agree, Taliban should have been our primary focus. We should have pressure the United Nations to do “their job” instead of allowing themselves to profit from oil kickbacks.

If we leave now, just like the first time, we will be back. And who will be wanting us to so then?

Conflating what has and is happening in the middle east to Hitler and WWII. How sad you cannot seem to think for yourself, and instead fall back upon useless and stale talking points. Saddam wasn’t a pleasant guy, but he wasn’t Hitler either. His attempts to invade Iran were stopped. His attempt to invade Kuwait was ended as well. The only people who claimed Saddam was a dark and gathering threat were Bush and his administration. Where is the WMD’s? Where are the nuclear bombs? Where is the threat of the Iraqi army? They didn’t even attack us you stupid git. They person responsible for 9/11 is still free. His network of operatives, and money is stronger then ever. Heckuva a job Bushie.

If Shuster got the soldier’s district wrong, then he should acknowledge it.

  54. Marie Says:

Do they think that the endless war in Iraq will keep terrorists away from our shores endlessly? Do they believe that all the terrorists in the world are going to be killed in the war in Iraq eventually?
Why do they simplistically believe that our presence in Iraq is keeping enemies at bay - they refuse to see that our presence in Iraq is breeding more enemies. Do they think that the young people who are growing up in the chaos we have brought to their country are going to be fans of America in the future?
Fleischer’s comments are disgraceful and inexcusable — they say more about his character or lack thereof than they do of anything else.
He is blinded by his partisanship to the point where he has no compassion - he sees only war, the killing, the mayhem and apparently gets a perverse pleasure from it.
    His callous remarks are sickening.

  55. chimpeach Says:

Great logic, Ari. Try this one instead: There will never be a victory, so, since you want the troops to stay there until there is one, you obviously want there to be a lot more mothers like her. If there could ever be a victory in a hopeless situation like this, it would have happened already. The longer it goes on, the tougher it gets for our troops, and the more this world is in danger from terrorists. The danger is increasing, not decreasing. We’re making enemies faster than we can kill them. If this White House full of mental midgets could ever have conceived a way to “win” this war, they should have already done it. The fact is that they have no idea what they’re going to do, but they can’t bear the humiliation of facing up to what they’ve done to this country.

  56. chimpeach Says:

    #49 Toliver

That Shuster gotcha turns out to be wrong btw. It turns out the fallen soldier [Pvt. Jeremy Bohannon] didn’t live in Blackburn’s district.

    http://conservativebelle.blogspot.com/

    If only…

Sorry, pal. You and “conservativebelle” have got it wrong. Bon Aqua is indeed in Blackburn’s district. Check out the map here:

    http://www.govtrack.us/ congress/ findyourreps.xpd?state=TN&district=7

It’s halfway between Bucksnort and Nashville.

Awwwww. Too bad. David Shuster’s a decent guy, though. I’m sure he’ll accept your apology.

  57. headybrew.net Says:

I’m so sick of all this. TERRORISM IS INSIGNIFICANT. When are we all going to realize that we are stuck in the middle of a mass hysteria over something that kills so few of us that your thousands of times more likley to die from the common flu.

Did you know that the odds of you getting killed by terrorism are significantly lower than the odds of you deciding to kill YOURSELF?

Please people, get the word out. The real story in all of this, is that there IS NO ENEMY. Certainly not any significant one worth wasting thousands of lives and a trillion dollars on.

Did you know that more Americans have died in the Iraq war than have been killed by every terrorist attack in north america in the last 4 decades?

There literally is NO ENEMY TO FIGHT.

    Check HERE

    and HERE

for solid sources on the statistics I’ve just given you.

Terrorism won’t hurt you. Bush will.
