Spakovsky not recommended, but will get full Senate vote.

Earlier today, ThinkProgress noted that the Senate Rules Committee was voting today on the nomination of former Bush DoJ official Hans von Spakovsky to a seat on the Federal Election Commission. TPM’s Paul Kiel reports that after Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE) broke party lines to support Spakovsky, Chairwoman Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) “chose to agree to send all four nominees, two Democrats and two Republicans, to the floor without recommendation. In other words, the committee did not vote to approve von Spakovsky, but he got through nonetheless.”

Now everyone on this site can know what it's like to be a Met fan right now. Catastrophic collapse--or is it a controlled demolition?

What. Is. Wrong. With. These. People.

Why don't alll those Dems just switch over to being GOPers and everyone will get along just fine. GWB will declare martial law, they're all happy... no fuss, no muss.

    Game. Over.

Feinstein may be trying to buy some Good Will and a "get Out of Jail" card for when her "legal issues" come up for review later, as she isn't running again.

And in return, we get more voter suppression?

I heard that the real estate is cheap in Mexico. All we need to do is learn Spanish. Now wouldn't that be interesting... Mexican sneaking into the USA and Americans sneaking into Mexico.

Nelson and Feinstein have betrayed us again. They think Petraeus is neat. #21 in a series of respected generals that have committed war crimes. Where is the outrage at losing our bill of rights in a few years to these incredibly sick humans?
but to allow someone you know to be a criminal all ready to be nominated for a job that deals with criminals? This is the insult to end insults.
Where is the epitaph for these United States?

  9. Eskwaya Says:

I must say... lots of votes coming through the Democratic led Congress lately... let's have a recap:

Timeline for troop withdrawal (Democratic position): voted down
Required leave for troops (Democratic position): voted down
Access to Presidential Records (Democratic position): on hold by Repub
    Lieberman-Kyl ("Attack Iran") Amendment: passed
Denounce "liberal activist group MoveOn.org" Res.: passed
Confirmation fo extreme right-wingers: moving out of committee

Hmmm, this sure sounds an awful lot like a Republican controlled Congress.

Now, I am reminded of the the "serious" brand that today's progressives complain about. As in... everyone who is serious about national security and freedom, is in favor of hawkish foreign policy. If you're not in favor of "might makes right" then you're not "serious". Atriots have good perspective on this phenomenon. But I invite you all to examine that this started with the Dems, labelling Nader supporters and even now Kucinich supporters as "non serious". Back then you had Nader saying, the Dem/Repub difference is like Coke and Pepsi; sure they taste a little different, but they're both cola, they both contain high fructose corn syrup and most every ingredient is pretty much the same.

Now, folks, there isn't even a mask showing that these are abstract issues we're dealing with. In the past, Republicans could pretend that they didn't hate poor people and minorities, but were just making fiscal sense when they scrapped social programs and shifted the tax burden off the owning class. But now, we are dealing with basic questions of our democracy, questions that have been deemed settled for over a century. Our core democratic principles are being jeopardized. Now, in light of the record of the 110th Congress and the very serious issues we face, it is plain to see that if there's a difference between the Dems and Repubs, it's a Coke or Pepsi difference.

Yet there really isn't any outrage from the people. Yes the very few in this country that pay close attention to what is going on are outraged, but the vast majority doesn't even know what is going on. Nothing has really hit home for most people. Considering most americans don't know who their Representitive or their Senator is. That they can't name all the Justices on the Supreme Court, or even how many Justices there are. They don't know how many amendments there are in the Constitution or what the say, they really aren't sure what is in the Bill of Rights, they don't know what the three Branches of Government are or how they are supposed to work, and that MOST PEOPLE DON'T EVEN VOTE! Save some of your anger for your stupid, lazy neighbor who stands by and lets the crap that is going on in this country to continue.

    Nelson, you f*cking IDIOT!!!!

What is this guy's problem? Must he work so hard at giving every unfair advantage possible to the Bush administration? Does he think that his so-called centrist voters in Nebraska are going to call for his head if he doesn't back Spakovsky? Does he not have any idea what Spakovsky has been doing to thwart fair elections and the rights of minorities to vote?

Tell us, Ben. What is your f*cking problem?!!!

LOL - I'm a lifelong Mets fan so I can absolutely relate. Even better - DH is a Red Sox fan ... if anyone knows something about Catastrophic collapse (remember 1978?), it's him!

On a serious note, I don't know how much more I can take before I disengage from politics completely and take a nice long vacation, somewhere outside the US. These votes (or non-votes) today have been so utterly and absolutely demoralizing I spent about a half hour just crying over the hopelessness of it all ... knowing we're going to attack Iran and cause untold misery and carnage, knowing that we're stuck in Iraq until God knows when with hundreds of thousands of innocent people (including our soldiers) dying for no reason, knowing that we're torturing innocent people, the whole thing. And knowing that the people we voted into office to get this country back on track have not only abandoned us but betrayed us by their votes. It is truly a dark time in this country right now, and I'm beginning to despair that things will change anytime soon.

    The emperor has no clothes!

Seriously, we no longer have a real 2 party system. One party, call it the Corporatic Party. Corporate Democrats. Corporate Republicans. Both are Corporatics. Corporatics are chosen by the elite to run for office. The votes cast are dollars. The citizens get to choose by casting votes which may or may not be counted. Corporatics vote along party lines on certain issues the elite dictates as important. On fringe issues, they may show their Republican/Democrat colors.

I have no other explanation for what we are seeing.

  15. curmudgeon Says:

Ben Nelson of Nebraska is probably more conservative than a number of Republicans in the Senate, making him one of several DINO's who derail the stated cause of the Democrats.

So which voting machine company promised Nelson a lucrative plum position on their board of directors after he leaves the Senate? ES&S, perhaps, courtesy of his soon-to-retire fellow Nebraskan, Chuck Hagel, formerly the Chairman, CEO, and major owner in that enterprise?
