A Challenge For Lawmakers Who Voted To Attack MoveOn Ad: Will They Now Condemn Limbaugh?»

On September 20, 72 Senators voted for the highly politicized, “bait and switch” resolution that condemned a newspaper ad by MoveOn.org. The amendment, offered by Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), expressly stated that the Senate would condemn “any effort to attack the honor and integrity” of “all members of the United States Armed Forces“:limbaugh

(b) Sense of Senate.–It is the sense of the Senate–

(1) to reaffirm its support for all the men and women of the United States Armed Forces, including General David H. Petraeus, Commanding General, Multi-National Force-Iraq;

(2) to strongly condemn any effort to attack the honor and integrity of General Petraeus and all the members of the United States Armed Forces; and

(3) to specifically repudiate the unwarranted personal attack on General Petraeus by the liberal activist group Moveon.org.

On his radio show yesterday, right-wing radio host Rush Limbaugh attacked the “honor and integrity” of some members of the Armed Forces. Limbaugh attacked troops who hold a different viewpoint than his own as “phony soldiers.” Iraq war vet Jon Soltz writes that Limbaugh’s comments are directed at “the majority of troops on the ground in Iraq” because they “do not back the President’s failed policy.”

For all the Senators who rushed to make political hay over an empty resolution, the spotlight is on them. Will they now enforce their “sense of the Senate” and condemn Rush Limbaugh?

Yesterday, 341 members of the House voted to pass a companion resolution to that of Cornyn’s. They, too, face the same question.

UPDATE: Crooks and Liars and Dave Johnson have more.

UPDATE II: Greg Sargent notes that during the same radio show, Limbaugh also callously declared “Keep the troops safe. Or whatever.”

UPDATE III: Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) has issued the following statement:

“This disgusting attack from Rush Limbaugh, cheerleader for the Chicken Hawk wing of the far right, is an insult to American troops,” Kerry said. “In a single moment on his show, Limbaugh managed to question the patriotism of men and women in uniform who have put their lives on the line and many who died for his right to sit safely in his air conditioned studio peddling hate. On August 19th, The New York Times published an op-ed by seven members of the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division critical of George Bush’s Iraq policy. Two of those soldiers were killed earlier this month in Baghdad. Does Mr. Limbaugh dare assert that these heroes were ‘phony soldiers’? Mr. Limbaugh owes an apology to everyone who has ever worn the uniform of our country, and an apology to the families of every soldier buried in Arlington National Cemetery. He is an embarrassment to his Party, and I expect the Republicans who flock to his microphone will now condemn this indefensible statement.”

TP’s been doing that a lot lately. What’s up with that?

All it takes is one brave Democrat to stand up and ask for a “Sense of the Senate” resolution to condemn Limbaugh. If they don’t do it, then they are just as bad as the Republicans.

I don’t think it’ll do any good. When has Rush ever apologized for anything? Even being an Oxy addict with ED doesn’t warrant an apology. Rethuglicans think they’re on gods own mission and will brand anyone who says otherwise a traitor to the cause.

If it’s good enough for MoveOn, then it’s good enough for ole’ Rushie! Let’s get on with the personal condemnation of Limbaugh now…..that is, lest every last one of them be deemed “hypocrites”!

I am not going to hold my breath.

  15. Veritas Says:

Bartlebee: I fear that you’ve nailed it on the head: The Dems are nothing more than Republican handservants and sycophants. This is precisely why many registered Democrats are switching to Indpendent. The Repukes betrayed us long ago; if the Dems continue to be spineless and compacent, playing “patta-cake” across the aisle, then they’ll all be booted from office in 08.

There are grassroots movements all over this country right now to “clean house in 08″ - that means, OUT WITH THEM ALL AND WITHOUT EXCEPTION. They are either downright criminals and working against the people of this country (all the Repukes) or are Repukes-In-Disguise - disgusting and spineless buttlickers.

  16. Veritas Says:

Isn’t it appalling that after all the people have done to express their views on this war, the illegal spying, the destruction of our constitution and bill of rights that we are still finding ourselves seriously disappointed, disillusioned, and downright angry at this point? Isn’t that what winning the midterms was supposed to be all about.

Granted, everyone realizes that without the necessary votes, some of the bills wouldn’t pass; however…..and this is the rub: One would think that the Democrats would feel a sense of obligation to the people who believed in them to “make an attempt” albeit probably futile but a showing for the people who placed them in office. But no - they still are chasing their tails and there’s not an articulate one in the bunch who can distill things down to the simplest form. There still is no one in Congress who is working for the people.

    This is sad and appalling.

Trust me - once you make the switch to Unaffiliated, a HUGE burden will be lifted from your shoulders and you can use your power to make these congressman “dance”.

  17. Veritas Says:

It’s obviously time to end this two party system “pissing contest” because the work of the people is not getting done.

Maybe it’s also time to do away with Congress all together since they don’t appear too wield any power any longer anyway.

Remember that “three legged stool” which the founding fathers conceived so expertly so there could not be a “power grab” of the magnitude we’ve seen with the Bush Cabal?? I think it’s safe to say that our stool has “no legs” any longer….the Congress has become impotent, and the DOJ - well, what can you say about this sicko DOJ?? For all intents and purposes I’d call it “defunct”. So Bush controls it all.

  18. Veritas Says:

And, that dear TP friends, is the definition of complete and unequivocal F-A-S-C-I-S-M! A Total and complete Dictatorship with no representation of the people whatsoever.

  19. Veritas Says:

  27. Veritas Says:

Hi Candyce! Love your work at the Zoo! Yes, indeed, it is time to send a message of total disgust to Congress with the nonsense they are wasting their precious time on…one would think these shenanigans to be part of a comedy routine. If they “had a clue”, they’d realize how juvenile and childish they are acting, not to mention the complete derelection of the duties of their office.

I think it’s time to give this entire Congress the boot. Anyone whose term expires in 08 had better be worrying. The people have a long memory and I suspect that those whom we see in Congress right now will be out bagging groceries at their local food market in the near future.

Interesting idea you have there. I was thinking about how Lieberman seems to get more attention as an Independant - even if we all know he is not an Independant. Because he can go ‘either way’, he is not locked into either side.

If citizens were unaffiliated, I believe the candidates would have to win your vote over and over - rather than count on us voting what are voter registrations indicate.

  34. Menehune Says:

Will they now enforce their “sense of the Senate” and condemn Rush Limbaugh?

Nope. They’ll say we need to “move on” from this partisan bickering and get back to the people’s business. Normally I’d say there ARE better things for Congress to do, but based on what they’ve done lately, any day that they are engaged in shallow theatrics is less harm to the country than any day they are “legislating”.

  35. bilbobaggins Says:

The people have a long memory and I suspect that those whom we see in Congress right now will be out bagging groceries at their local food market in the near future.

If only that were true. I actually think that the people in this country have a notoriously short memory. They are easily swayed by whatever sound bite flashes in front of their face at the current moment. But, I don’t know. Maybe people are fed up enough that they won’t forget a year from now.

Love to see John Kerry and John Murtha introduce legislation in the respective chambers….then watch as no Republican backs them up….but that would be OK, because we all know the MoveOn resolutions were cheap political theater. Jan Schakowsky, D-IL: “Rush Limbaugh is at it again. Unable to defend an indefensible war in Iraq, he’s once again resorted to sliming the messenger. The messenger he’s going after are the brave men and women who bravely serve their country in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other wars. Men and women who serve in Iraq differ from Rush Limbaugh in two critical ways. First, unlike Mr. Limbaugh, they actually served in the military. Second, unlike Mr. Limbaugh, they understand the war in Iraq is making our country less safe and destroying the military. How dare Rush Limbaugh label anyone who has served in the military as a phony soldier.”

  51. tarazan Says:

    #51 Arne,

    You put it nicely.

  52. Veritas Says:

StratRat: You got it. By becoming “unaffiliated”, one’s voice suddenly returns because they don’t know which way you will go. As well, it will keep the dems on their toes since a good portion of I’s were Registered Dems to begin with and have a more liberal mindset. It really puts the Dems “on notice” that you’ve become disgusted with the way they are comporting themselves and that your vote will have to be “won”.

Right now there are 35% Registered I’s in this country. In New Hampshire, there are 44% Registered I’s which is pretty telling. I believe the message is loud and clear and still the MSM is not dealing with I’s.

Both parties have far too much invested in this two party system and are not telling you that you can become Independent and still vote for anyone you’d like. It certainly does not mean that if there is an Independent candidate, you must vote for them. There’s a lot of mularky out there put out by both sides against independents. They always raise the issue of “splitting the vote” as occurred with Nader. Poo-Poo on that notion once the numbers begin to climb.

At this point in time, Reg. I’s account for 35%; Dems account for 37% with the Repukes weighing in at a paltry 28% and dropping like the Titanic. So, let’s just hypothesize for a moment - both candidates are fatigued from all of the swiftboating on both sides of the aisle come January 08…..not to mention that neither one of them has even a shred of credibility left to their name…..and then some dark horse candidate emerges from the sidelines…it could certainly occur if there is one who feels compelling to help “save this country from self-destruction”….

I can’t wait to see how much higher the I’s will become following this session of congress in which the Dems have become spineless, lockstep sycophants. The Dems should take nothing for granted; the people are pissed and disgusted and will become unaffiliated to show their voice, Democrats.

There isn’t one Democratic candidate that I would not vote for in a heartbeat in 2008, from Hillary to Obama to Dodd to Gravel and everyone in between. The risk of another 4 years of Grand Old Pervert rule, with its rampant corruption, trampling of 1st and 4th Amendment rights, no hope for ending this idiotic war, no strong FDA, no money to rebuild our broken infrastructure, ad infinitum, is too great for wasting your vote.
November 2008 is when we take back our Country.

  55. Candyce Says:

Just got an email action alert from Wes Clark.

    Dear Candyce,

You’ve heard a number of times from Jon Soltz of VoteVets.org.
Do you consider him a phony soldier?

According to Rush Limbaugh, Jon Soltz, an Iraq war veteran, is a
phony soldier. Today, Media Matters reports that Rush Limbaugh
said that those troops who come home and want to get America out
of the middle of the religious civil war in Iraq are “phony
    soldiers.”1

The question is, would Rush make these outrageous and offensive
    comments to Jon’s face?

Take action now. Email Rush Limbaugh and urge him to invite Jon
    Soltz onto his radio show!

    http://ga4.org/ct/PpScl511nmi7/limbaugh

Rush Limbaugh has never worn the uniform in his life, yet he’s
got the moral standing to pass judgment on the men and women who
risked their lives for this nation?

Polls have shown that the majority of troops on the ground in
Iraq, and those who have returned, do not back the President’s
    failed policy.

Does Rush believe, then, that the majority of the US Armed
    Forces are “phony?”

Major Generals John Batiste and Paul Eaton left the military and
have spoken out against the Bush Administration’s failed
policies. These are former commanders in Iraq, and they have
challenged the Administration for its stubborn refusal to listen
to those commanders on the ground who have sent up warning after
    warning.

Does Rush believe that highly decorated Major Generals are
    “phony soldiers?”

Finally, recall the members of the 82nd Airborne in Iraq who
wrote a New York Times op-ed, urging for a change in course in
Iraq, and suggesting it was time to figure out the exit
strategy. Two of them just died.

Does Rush believe these young troops are “phony soldiers?”

My challenge to you is to force Rush to invite Jon Soltz onto
his show and say all of this again, right to the face of someone
    who served in Iraq.

Click here to email Rush now!

    http://ga4.org/ct/PpScl511nmi7/limbaugh

Democracy demands discussion, disagreement, and dissent. It is
the natural expression of our freedom. To dishonor the service
of our troops because they have a different viewpoint is
unconscionable. Thank you for speaking out.

    Sincerely,

    Wes Clark

    You know what to do.

Every day I am amazed at how many of us inadvertently do the republicans’ work for them. What they want is for people to lose faith in the Democratic party, the traditional party of the working class. Republicans understand the demographics and where they are going. They know we’re on the verge of another re-emergence of progressive, liberal government policy. Their only chance is to suppress the vote, sow discontent among liberals and divide.

Many of us do their work for them. Lefties line up in a circular firing squad and libertarians try to concentrate on their opposition to the war while glossing over the most basic aspects of their own political philosophy. It’s amazing we can win any election at all.

  66. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

helenahandbasket, thanks, that’s a great piece, and so true! Personally, I’ve never been embarassed to call myself a liberal. By today’s standards, most of the country’s Founders were amazingly liberal. It’s an American tradition.

There will be no apology, nor will there be any mass outrage by the so-called liberal, conservative or whatever media period.

Time has shown that the right wing can say and do whatever the hell they want, and because there are Soldiers in high positions who share their views they get away with it by presenting them in their uniforms smiling and agreeing with them.

I’ll tell you what I would love for Mr. Limbaugh or any of his followers to come to Fort Lewis, Wa and say that to me and my men who have been to war. I have been to EVERY conflict since “Operation Just Cause” (Panama 1989) and have been wounded twice and received a Purple Heart (which Repuppetcans disrespected and de-valued during their so called convention in 04). I have been to Afghanistan and Iraq twice, I have lost Soldiers, Friends, Brother’s and Sister’s, and I know that We are tired of deploying multiple times in this the most perilous time in our nations history (yea right) while the privileged sit on their asses and talk nonsense.

My Soldiers and I that did not agree with this war, fought it anyway, and WE fought it well and followed the orders of the POTUS. All of us didn’t make it back and I hurt for that everyday, but to have to listen to this garbage not only from Mr. Limbaugh but from his legions of idiots who only repeat what the party tells them is enough.

I will challenge ANYONE who calls me or ANY Soldier that so happens to not like multiple deployments, unclear objectives, cronyism, divorce, death, lies, incompetence, apathy, a phony Soldier, ANYONE!!!

To those who understand right from wrong, you know that MoveOn ad was about Gen. Petrauus sounding and acting more like Sen. Petraeus, than the upfront, direct, straight-shooting SOLDIER that he SHOULD BE. That’s what NCO’s are for, since Officer’s value their career’s over their Men and Women, accomplishment of the mission, and the welfare of our Soldier’s.

And Sir by being the administrations body armor, you are failing us.

So please dont waste your time or hold your breath waiting for this to be anything other than the right getting away with what they do best, because there is no opposition party, and there is no strength on the other side of the aisle, the military has become this country’s three branches of government, a job WE were NEVER trained for but has been passed to us because the people we have now can not, will not do it.

    Well said, Tired of Fighting.

  76. Zooey Says:

Great to see you, Tired of Fighting.

Click on my name, you’re welcome anytime. :)

  77. drtichy Says:

Well, surprise, surprise. Did anyone expect comments from Rush that make any sense? He is known not by the gift of making rational, honest, and intelligent comments, but by the ability to BRAIN-WASH people’s mind.
Listen to his daily nonsense (try five minutes some day!). There is no more successful brainwasher than Rush in America. And, if you disagree with his abusive, weak, and stupid comments, try to call his show and talk to him. You will never go through. He has his KGB making sure that only the nonsense will be heard, nothing else.
He has no courage to discuss the issues with people who can think rationally - so he hides behind a closed door.

  78. Tired Of Fighting Says:

    Will Do Zooey

  79. Zooey Says:

Looking forward to seeing you, Tired of Fighting…

  80. FunMe Says:

If the Democrats in the Senate and Congress MAJORITY don’t do anything, then perhaps we have …

    PHONY Democrats!

  81. Patricia McDermott Says:

Had Enough, I wish your observation would come to pass. You said, “It is obvious Rush is still using.. he is rotting from the inside out and it is a matter of time for him.” But just think of all the layers of lard between his inside and his outside. I’m afraid it will take a very long time for the rot to actually make it to the surface.

  82. chimpeach Says:

Oh yeah, Rush, I’m sure all the soldiers over there in Iraq who think that Bush is an idiot and that the thing they’re stuck in the middle of right now is an enormous clusterf*ck will really give a shit that some big fat pussy with diarrhea of the mouth is calling them “phony soldiers”.

  83. Gregor Samsa Says:

    Good Jeebus!!

Tracy has absolutely, completely redefined, singlehandedly -in one thread, over the course of a few hours in a single night- the meaning of the word “mouthbreather”.

Thanks for the many laughs, Bartlebee. Now I know Tracy is not a kool-aid drinker. He is just naturally slow and in need of a leader to follow. What an utter fool.

    Have a good night…

  84. Gregor Samsa Says:

“You threatened to involve my firm”

The same firm whose information you willingly provided, without even being prompted.

    Good Jeebus….

  85. Chocolate Jesus Says:

    > Oh I am sorry, I mistook you for a man with balls.

does he still arouse you anyway, as a ballless man?

I retract my offer of lazer tag.. you sound a little scary

    >Then you don’t have a wife or a mother….

neither did Joe Wilson…didnt your hero Rove say his wife was “fair game”?..oh wait… blowing someones cover and possibly endangering their lives and the lives of the front company they worked for is ok, but making fun of then in the abstract..oh bOY thats going too far…

  86. Uncle Ho Says:

Only days ago, members of both parties were falling all over themselves to condemn the moveon.org ad about the general.

Rush Limpdick calls soldiers who think we should get out of Iraq “phoney soldiers.

Somehow, I think the SILENCE will be DEAFANING.

  87. tombaker Says:

good lord - we’re at what, Round 864, in this slugfest?

Watch that right wing, Bartlebee, he’s got a sack of washers hidden in that glove…keep working that cut over his left eye…

  88. tombaker Says:

I’m getting a cigar fired up, so I can be just like Burgess Meredith…

    Hit’em Rock!…stay in there, ya’bastard…

  89. tombaker Says:

rotfl - this has been THE highlight reel of the week…

i think Berman’s going to include Tracy on “Jacked Up” this weekend.

  90. tombaker Says:

i can process credit cards right here, B, if it comes to that. i’ll just take a modest percentage, like any god-fearing righty businessman would.

  91. tombaker Says:

beavis and butthead, all rolled up into one gummi trolli - how precious

  92. John Kerry Says:

Why don’t you listen to Rush’s comment and get your facts straight…FOR A CHANGE!! This is all a TOTAL LIE!! Rush was only talking about one convicted lying PHONY soldier!!

    Nice try!

    LIBS OWN DEFEAT!!

By the way, we are all still waiting for Murtha’s apology!!

  93. RightWingNut Says:

If you people would get your facts straight it would be amazing. You take things out of context and get worked up into an orgasmic frenzy because you think you finally found the magic bullet to take out Limbaugh. If you’ve ever listened to his show, you know he supports the troops.

You halfwits who feed off of mediamatters.org, only got half the comment. Limbaugh went on to explain what a phony soldier was - specifically one of your heroes - Jesse MacBeth. MacBeth claimed he was an Army Ranger, a corporal, fought in Afghanistan and Iraq and had a purple heart and then told of atrocities committed in Iraq by our soldiers. You leftwing droolies slobbered all over him and his lies because he fit your view of our military.

Unfortunately for you, the truth came out - MacBeth had washed out of boot camp in 40 days, had never been in Afghanistan or Iraq, was not a Ranger or corporal and definitely didn’t earn a purple heart.

That, my poor deluded countrymen, is who Limbaugh was talking about (if you listened to the full tape) when he said “phony soldiers”. Get your facts straight before you go on a jihad.

  94. RightWingNut Says:

By the way, now that you know the facts, we’re still waiting for the apology regarding the Betray Us ad by moveon.org.

  95. tombaker Says:

wow - this is a real live one - must think that we didn’t already think Rush was a pathetic disgrace prior to this dustup where he insulted all the real troops doing the real fighting.

  96. tombaker Says:

funny too, that they think i’d actually read or listen to anything that perverted, pusbag, dope-addict draft-dodger has to say about anything, ever. i’d sooner eat a dogturd.

  97. RightWingNut Says:

A perverted, pusbag, dope-addict draft-dodger? You mean Bill Clinton? I’d rather eat a dogturd that listen to him too.

  98. theyak Says:

Tracy1 and BARTLEBEE, just get a room already. I’m tired of scrolling past your bickering. There are some interesting comments worth reading here.

  99. RightWingNut Says:

And tombaker, you apparently aren’t concerned with truth. Limbaugh did not insult “all real troops doing the real fighting” - only those who say they were over there fighting and really haven’t even been overseas.

  100. tombaker Says:

no - i meant rush, not the last good president everyone in the country wishes was still in office.

  101. theyak Says:

And as far as Rush ever debating an informed opponent, make me laugh. The cowardly gas-bag invented the “unopposed bloviator” format when he was humiliated on the air years ago.

  102. RightWingNut Says:

I know who you meant. The last good president ended the Cold War and died a couple of years ago.

Perverted - hmmm, multiple rape accusations, cigars as sex toys?
Pusbag - Clinton is quite the McDonald’s muching lard-ass
Dope-addict - uh, does Mena mean anything to you?
Draft-dodger - oh that’s rich! Clinton is the biggest draft dodger of them all

Facts - they really bite you in a$$.

  103. theyak Says:

RightWingNut, yeah, his producer told him what he said and he covered his copious ass real quick. And only the GOP can equate Betrayus, who was the mouthpiece for what the Whitehouse said was the Whitehouse’ report, with the troops. Only in your imagination was the Moveon ad anything but the truth. get past the headline and argue the facts.

  104. theyak Says:

Yes, Mena does mean something to me. It’s the airport in Arkansas that Oliver North used to run guns outof and drugs in to the U.S. when the senile old fool you venerate violated the Constitution of the United States of America. To supply a terrorist group in Nicaragua and El Salvador.

  105. RightWingNut Says:

As I’ve said, if you’ve ever listened to Limbaugh, you know he supports the troops. That doesn’t matter in your narrow little world-view.

As for Petraeus, if the report was written by the WH, it would be more stellar than it was. If he was just shilling for the WH, then he would have painted a much prettier picture.

Any if you can’t take his word for it - that he the WH had nothing to do with it, it really doesn’t matter because your (tiny) mind is already mad up.

  106. theyak Says:

After the previous 2 reports within a week, Petraeus couldn’t have painted a rosier picture than he did without his head exploding. maybe the Admiral, his boss is right, calling him an ass-kissing little chickenshit.

  107. theyak Says:

I’ve listened to Limbaugh, and he supports Limbaugh, gotta tell the angry white male what he wants to hear.

  108. RightWingNut Says:

While I agree with Limbaugh on most issues, I won’t argue with you that he is very self-promoting. Sometimes to an extreme.

But, just because someone is overly keen on themselves, doesn’t necessarily negate what they have to say.

  109. theyak Says:

Fool, he was appointed because he was willing to stall for more time. If he was on the level, he would have called for the number of troops needed to wage a counter insurgency as defined in the MANUAL THAT HE WROTE.

  110. theyak Says:

So, as often as Rush has told you what a democrat thinks, why doesn’t he get a job at the psychic hot line. Just lap it up, puppy.

  111. theyak Says:

sure thing. as soon as I hear from a non-involved party that your bickering isn’t a crashing bore.

  112. theyak Says:

As I’ve said, if you’ve ever listened to Limbaugh, your ears would begin to bleed, and flowing puss would seep from your eyese until your brain implodes.

    Comment by RightWingNut — September 28, 2007 @ 1:39 pm

That explains it!!! I’ve always wondered why ditto-heads always acted that way. Sorry BARTLEBEE, I guess you were being subtle in not responding to that

  113. theyak Says:

OK, as promised, I will practice my scrolling. Lay on MacDuff!

  114. tombaker Says:

theyak - i’m another party that doesn’t so much mind Bartlebee’s take-no-prisoners approach to posters like tracy (though i do like/prefer threads to stay on topic, with creative input being shared among thoughtful people).

when you’ve been around here a while, you go through all kinds of phases of belief about how trolling should be dealt with, but in the long run you can’t resist the temptation to just go toe-to-toe with them for as long as their masochistic streak holds out, and demonstrate to them conclusively that there will be no cutting-and-running from their lies, their spinning, and their treachery, and that lefties are tougher than them at the end of the day.

  115. tombaker Says:

I’m back for a big high-5 to you Bartlebee, for answering each and every low blow the righties try to get away with (besides, you’re diverting them from shittying up fresh threads).

keep at the sob’s - a sound beating is all they can understand.
