On his radio show yesterday, Rush Limbaugh declared that soldiers who support American withdrawal from Iraq are “phony soldiers.” While discussing and disparaging war critics, a caller to Limbaugh’s show, who claimed to be an active-duty soldier, said that anti-war activists “never talk to real soldiers” to support their position, to which Limbaugh responded “phony soldiers“:
CALLER 2: No, it’s not, and what’s really funny is, they never talk to real soldiers. They like to pull these soldiers that come up out of the blue and talk to the media.
LIMBAUGH: The phony soldiers.
CALLER 2: The phony soldiers. If you talk to a real soldier, they are proud to serve. They want to be over in Iraq. They understand their sacrifice, and they’re willing to sacrifice for their country.
Listen to it:
UPDATE: At the Huffington Post, Jon Soltz, the Chairman of VoteVets.org, responds to Limbaugh’s “phony soldiers” comment.

Limbaugh wouldn’t know a real soldier if one shove a bayonette up his ass.
September 27th, 2007 at 3:40 pmHe is off his meds again.
September 27th, 2007 at 3:41 pmMore projection.
September 27th, 2007 at 3:41 pmMy tensing button seems to be on the fritz…shoved?
September 27th, 2007 at 3:42 pmSo, when is the Congress going to do a “Sense of the Senate” bill to condemn Limbaugh for disparaging our troops?
September 27th, 2007 at 3:43 pmOh, Jesus H. Christ on a cracker….!!!
Could Rush be any more of a pig????
No, I really don’t think so. I’m betting he shows up as the Worst Person In The World tonight. Any takers…?
September 27th, 2007 at 3:43 pmI would suggest Soltz belt Rush in the gut, but his fist would probably get lost for all eternity in there.
September 27th, 2007 at 3:43 pmThis coming from the guy who got out of Vietnam because he had a cyst on his rearend.
September 27th, 2007 at 3:43 pmAnother steaming pile for our resident trolls to done on.
September 27th, 2007 at 3:47 pmWhat was Limpdicks rank in the service again?
September 27th, 2007 at 3:49 pmKeith, I’m pretty sure that the cyst has a Limbaugh on it.
September 27th, 2007 at 3:49 pmGeekpater ~ That would be
UNFIT FOR
September 27th, 2007 at 3:50 pmYes. There’s only room for the blood thirsty in the military…. apparently.
Too bad the most blood thirsty proponents of the war wear business suits to work instead of uniforms, and their children couldn’t have a care in the world.
September 27th, 2007 at 3:53 pmMr. 4-F calling serving soldiers “phony”??? He’s a regular Lord Haw Haw himself–the great, fat, drugged-up hypocrite. His biggest fight was to get a doctor to write him up for butt cyst!
September 27th, 2007 at 3:56 pmPerhaps one of the phony soldiers should bust that pus gut’s f*cking nose.
It’s going to take some radical steps to get these pukes’ attention. Logic and rational discussion doesn’t get through, we need to get in their faces and get their attention. As long as there are no consequences to these idiots spouting their hate, they won’t stop.
I know it’s not in a lot of our nature to abandon reason for passion, and I am not advocating violence, but let’s get in their faces. At work, in the store, at a ball game. Challenge these pukes!
September 27th, 2007 at 3:57 pmWhat? He will only support troops who are rah rah war automatons? Good luck in finding any — the soldiers making up our army have actual intelligence and skill, and they are in a position to see what’s real and know what they are fighting for or against far better than those of us sitting at home in our Barcaloungers.
It might interest him to know that even soldiers who write op-eds critical of the war are still following orders and are committed to doing their duty. Any one of them is more of a “real soldier” than Rush the chickenhawk ever was.
September 27th, 2007 at 4:00 pmI seriously doubt if those brave and courageous military personnel featured in the documentary Sir! No Sir!, which told the story of the GI Resistance, would take kindly to being labeled “phony soldiers.” But then I suspect that they would simply dismiss what he has to say as the ramblings of someone who absolutely no credibility whatsoever. Rush Limbaugh is not fit to stand in the shadow and/or shine the shines of a Lt. Watada, who has more courage and integrity than Limbaugh can ever hope to know.
September 27th, 2007 at 4:01 pmSomeone needs to remind Mr. Polinidal Cyst that two of those phony soldiers lost their lives earlier this month. Go ahead, put a smile on his face.
I’m telling you the only people who “support the troops” are progressives and liberals. We only hear this disparaging talk about the troops on the ground from conservo-dittos.
September 27th, 2007 at 4:04 pm…not that I’ve ever wondered what a chickenhawk circle-jerk sounded like.
I think having an ass-pimple is a phony way to dodge service to your country, Mr. Dope-addict.
September 27th, 2007 at 4:04 pm“who claimed to be an active-duty soldier”
Sure he was…
September 27th, 2007 at 4:06 pmCandyce:
“the only people who “support the troops†are progressives and liberals”
I think I say this every other day. It’s so true.
September 27th, 2007 at 4:07 pmThat’s rich…… really rich. A draft-dodging coward(Rush Limpdick) with a phony ailment calling soldiers phonies.
September 27th, 2007 at 4:09 pmThat’s funny considering the most anti-war candidate running for president, Ron Paul, has received the most contributions from members of the armed forces that any candidate from any party.
The troops want to defend America, not die as pawns for the administration and friends.
September 27th, 2007 at 4:10 pmThis is a perfect example of what I brought up in another thread. Rush and the whole group of right wing ideologues that sip the kool-aid a little too frequently don’t give a damn about the troops, they don’t give a damn about anybody except those who unquestioningly support everything they say.
September 27th, 2007 at 4:11 pmWell ‘real soldiers’ would have a death wish…you know like the Jap kami-kaze pilots. While ‘phony soldiers’ would just want to survive and be forced to come home to their wives and children.
September 27th, 2007 at 4:12 pmI don’t know if he’s said it before, but at 12:40 (ET) 9/26 he was talking to a caller named Jill and when referring to WMDs and the war said something like he would “stipulate there were no WMDs, going in was a mistake, and it has been botched since…, but it’s old news…”
September 27th, 2007 at 4:15 pmThis is a good opportunity to consider what we’d likely be hearing from the troops were they draftees, and not volunteers.
September 27th, 2007 at 4:15 pmAnd I’m sure congress will rush to condem the words of Rush.
Nice response by Jon Soltz.
September 27th, 2007 at 4:21 pmWhat is strange is that someone who called in to his radio station in December of 2002 accused him of avoiding being drafted because he had a “boil on his butt” and Limbaugh claimed that that was “Internet BS.” But yet Limbaugh has never stated on the record what was the supposed real reason why he was not drafted to fight in the jungles of Vietnam.
September 27th, 2007 at 4:22 pm“So when was Rush a “real†soldier?”
back when ‘halo’ first came out.
September 27th, 2007 at 4:27 pmYou’re cracking me up today, BART.
Rush can call the butt boil charge BS, but apparently his mother and brother have confirmed it.
September 27th, 2007 at 4:30 pmWhat really scares me, is that anyone still listens to this wanker? He and billo and haniteehee are laughing stocks of anyone with an IQ over 75.
September 27th, 2007 at 4:31 pmC’Mon! This has got to be done for fame and attention. There is no one who could possibly be stupid enough to say and actually mean “phoney soldiers”. There could not possibly be that much arrogance and ignorance in a single human being.
So what this fat pig, GOD bless him, is saying is that if you think for yourself and/or speak truth you are a phoney soldier? Oh! Now I get it!
September 27th, 2007 at 4:32 pmYes, thats what I want to know, how do we know the caller was active-duty?
Journalism 101 is the class Rush failed after ballroom dancing.
September 27th, 2007 at 4:42 pmI’m offended by Limbaugh’s comments
I hope the Senate passes a bill condemning Limbaugh’s disparagement of the American military.
September 27th, 2007 at 4:43 pmHey, if you were a pilonidal cyst you’d be addicted to drugs too if some moby-dick was sitting on you.
Stop picking on the cysts in this world! =P
September 27th, 2007 at 4:45 pmMaybe I’m wrong about that. Comment by spit take — September 27, 2007
All the more reason to assume Rush’s caller was a Phony Phone-in Soldier. =)
September 27th, 2007 at 4:48 pmFor a Pilonidal Cyst, which is a cyst on his Tailbone! -BB
I think he called it ‘back surgery’. Heh
September 27th, 2007 at 4:49 pmI patiently await the right, who so criticized the MoveOn.org advertisement, to denounce Rush for he’s attack on the soldiers actually doing battle!!!
Exley, I’m calling you out on this bull$hit! You spent many a brain cells attacking the supporters of MoveOn’s criticism of a serving general.
Do you not offer the same attack for those that criticize our serving soldiers?
Or, do you agree with Rush’s adjective of calling any soldier who serves but opposes the administration, as phony?
Because, to me, criticizing a general who was “told” what to say, lock and step, via the White House, is not as infuriating as telling those that serve to protect our freedom, phonies.
September 27th, 2007 at 4:50 pmApparently for Rush, only those soldiers who “want to be in Iraq” are the REAL soldiers. I’ll bet if he ran of survey of the soldiers now serving there, he’d find very few wanted to be there in the first place. They may be doing their job and following orders, but they’d sure enjoy being back home a heck of a lot more. Rush makes it sound like the decision to go to war was made by the soldiers themselves and not by the insane monkey-faced idiot who ordered them to go there.
September 27th, 2007 at 4:54 pmThe Cyst was later determined to be his head.
Comment by BARTLEBEE — September 27, 2007
DING DING! We have a WINNER! BartleBee wins the pin the cyst on the ass game!
“the surgery was unsuccessful and I continued to have severe pain in my lower back and also in my neck due to herniated discs. I am still experiencing that pain.” -Arel [Limbaugh] when admitting to addiction to pain medication.
September 27th, 2007 at 4:54 pm“The Troops” has become yet another meaningless slogan for the rightwing.
I just don’t get why they allow people like Limbaugh to profess to speak for them. No one elected them military representatives.
Fat guys are not tough. They’re just fat.
September 27th, 2007 at 4:56 pmCan someone explain to me again why the Democrat led congress needs to cast votes that appease republicans?
Comment by BARTLEBEE
Would you please stop doing that. You are doing the same thing the Republicans do. It is the DEMOCRATIC party. The people in the party are DEMOCRATS. It is not “the Democrat led congress”, it is the “Democratic led congress”. Phew…rant off. I’m really not trying to criticize you, this is just one of my hot buttons. It’s bad enough when the Republicans do it to demean us, we don’t need to do it too!
September 27th, 2007 at 4:59 pmRush didn’t bother to talk about ‘real’ soldiers going AWOL due to repeated rotations.
September 27th, 2007 at 4:59 pmWhat is the difference between “phony soldiers” and “chicken hawks”?
September 27th, 2007 at 4:59 pmThe Cyst was later determined to be on his BRAIN…/there fixed it for you 8-).
September 27th, 2007 at 5:00 pmRush should go a few rounds with these ‘phony soldiers” to see just how phony they are.
September 27th, 2007 at 5:10 pmDoes that mean I have to stop calling people progs too?
Comment by BARTLEBEE
Nope, the Republicans don’t call us that to demean us. They call us Leftards and other such nonsense. I am no longer going to call trolls, trolls, I am calling them “right wing loons” like Billo calls us “left wing loons”. I think it’s time to start throwing their shit back at them. I don’t think I have ever, in my adult life, been as mad as I am right now.

September 27th, 2007 at 5:14 pmFor a Pilonidal Cyst, which is a cyst on his Tailbone!
So Rush apparantly got out of serving in the military, because he had a pussy wart on his big, fat ass.
:D
Ain’t life grand?
Comment by BARTLEBEE — September 27, 2007 @ 4:47 pm
I am NOT defending Rush, I mean he is the ultimate PHONY AMERICAN but I happen to have experience with a condition very similar. My cysts can be treated with antibiotics but Pilonidal cysts cannot. With these cysts, you must get it drained and removed with a 3 to 6 week recover and keep it VERY clean. Very difficult in combat conditions. In fact, I was told to avoid any physical activity while it healed. This could explain Rush’s size although I managed to maintain my weight when I get these nasty things. Also, these cysts can and very often do reoccur.
Again, I am not defending Rush for his phoney soldiers comment butt (spelling error intended) I would trust the military health professionals to classify him as they did.
Now, don’t let me stop anyone from any good butt jokes. After each cyst gets taken care of, I look back always have a good laugh. Oh damn I can’t stop on this subject.LOL My wife and I were going to London and one week before we left I got one of these recurring cysts. Antibiotics cured it but for the days before and a few days during the trip, I had to keep the cysts cold to help stop its growth. Yup, an ice bag on my ass, and I mean ass. No liquids on the plane so I had to get ice from the attendant on the plane and sit on an ice bag all the way there!
Ok enough already.
September 27th, 2007 at 5:14 pmI think a little demeaning is the least the democratIC party has coming.
Comment by BARTLEBEE
I disagree. Demeaning the party does us no good, it just plays into the right’s hands. Being mad at the party and letting them know you are mad is the only thing that will do any good. I’m so mad I have written at least 30 e-mails in the last two days and made a couple dozen phone calls. I even became an Independent. I told the people I talked to and e-mailed that I plan on remaining an Independent until such time as the Democratic party grows a set of balls, stops playing into the hands of the Republicans and starts standing up for the people of this country. If every progressive who is mad at the Democrats were to do that (become and Independent and tell them why), I do believe they would get the message. Then register as a Democrat again to reward them for good behavior.

Neh, I dont let their Rush Manchild code words bother me. The only reason Rush uses them is probably to make his listeners feel like they are ‘enlightened’ members.

September 27th, 2007 at 5:19 pmThis man has absolutely no shame whatsoever. How can he get up everyday and look himself in the mirror.
My solution is to drop him off in the middle of the desert in Iraq. That way he can see first hand how wrong he is, and we could be rid of him at the same time. Two birds, one stone
September 27th, 2007 at 5:21 pmBilbo - an excellent thought for the Senate. Let’s see the Dem’s do something about THIS ONE. I mean, they have a weakling majority, no?
and RUCerious - LOVE your tensing teases. indeed!
I’m half convinced that this was said by Dimbaugh to keep us all yakking about this and keep us FROM yakking about the real stuff. Politics and Hollywood - oh yea. Repudians know what they’re doing.

I am not angry about what Rush had to say, that is nothing in the grand scheme of things. I am angry with the Democrats for the things they have and have not done in the last week. I am angry at Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid for playing into the hands of the Republicans. When the Republicans were in control, if they didn’t want something to come up for a vote, they did not allow it to come to a vote. Why don’t we play the same game with the Republicans? I think the Democrats should kick both Pelosi and Reid to the curb. Then replace Pelosi with Barbara Boxer and Reid with Russ Feingold. Then you would see some real integrity and fight coming out of the Democrats.

Great one!
You know people, it’s long overdue to pull an all out “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore” - “Howard Beale in Network”-style
Shall we organize a giant yell out of our collective windows?
September 27th, 2007 at 5:28 pmI am angry with the Democrats for the things they have and have not done in the last week. I am angry at Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid for playing into the hands of the Republicans.
Oh that. The resolution? Well they, Dems, can point to that and say “hey we did something while the vile freepers [Oreilly quote] did not get reprimanded at all and vulgar Ann Coulter talks about poisoning judges, did the Republicans do anything? Nope”.. =)
I remember Ann said something about troops some time ago, I will pull it up.

September 27th, 2007 at 5:35 pm“in 90 percent of the cases that U.S. soldiers got blown up [in Vietnam] — Ann, are you listening? — they were our own mines.” (Muller was paraphrasing a 1969 Pentagon report that found that 90 percent of the components used in enemy mines came from U.S. duds and refuse.) Coulter averted her eyes and responded sarcastically: “No wonder you guys lost.”

September 27th, 2007 at 6:15 pmThe differences between the D’s and the R’s are so fundamental and so huge, it really doesn’t make sense to talk about D’s differences amongst themselves. They’re all so much better than the R’s, in every possible way, that the discussion is of questionable merit at best. Can we criticize them?, sure, but what progress are we making when we do? Can we wish there was an even better 3rd party to get behind? sure, but it doesn’t exist yet, and the time to build it is sure as hell not right now, and the way to build it is brick by brick over a lot of years. The stakes are way too high - too many lives hang in the balance, to have a generationally significant shift in the political landscape (which is, pessimistic brethren, happening right now) scuttled by infighting and spoiled fickleness.
Organize, don’t Naderize
September 27th, 2007 at 6:20 pmOh Tom,
The differences between D and R’s, really? Are you kidding me?
I just switched to the Independent Party because the differences are negligible . You’ve got Guliani and Schwarznegger Repugs and a guy named Lieberman who actually ran as VP of the Dam party.

September 27th, 2007 at 8:19 pmWhat is it about right wing Chickenhawks that talk a big game, but, when their country calls they have some sort of problem relating to their proctologist. Limbaugh has a cyst and his right wing buddy and suck ass guitarist Ted Nugent boasts of urinating and defecating in his pants for an entire week. Now they both wrap themselves in the flag, when in reality they’re both wrapped in shit paper.
September 27th, 2007 at 8:46 pmBartlebee - challenged me not challenged myself. Myself, the most misused word in the English language.
September 27th, 2007 at 9:00 pmOk Tracy1 –
We had a civil discussion before (where you still refused to look at the facts, but at least it was civil), but this argument is ridiculous.
First, it is irrelevant if the first caller was a veteran or not. The second caller generically referred to ANY VETERAN SPEAKING OUT AGAINST THE OCCUPATION. In response, Rush said “Phony Soldiers” - plural and generic, not “like this phony soldier”, or “like our last caller”. He called everyone who fought, is fighting, or gave their lives for this country that spoke up (2 dead and one seriously wounded soldier from 82nd Airborne comes to mind), a “phony soldier”.
Second, not all veterans use the fact that they are a veteran as talking point unless it is challenged. Many try to use the facts and logical arguments instead of military service because it should have no bearing on most political arguments (although it usually does). In fact, many times it feels disingenuous.
If you remember, I didn’t mention it in our last discussion until you accused me of “never being in the military or having any military experience.” In any context, Rush is out of line and he disgusts me.
September 27th, 2007 at 11:16 pmA few days ago, Bartlebee kept catigating me because I wouldn’t bow down to what a great convert Alan Greenspan was——and now he is saying that he will vote for any third party before the Democrats!!

September 28th, 2007 at 6:29 amComon Rush, there’s no need to be a chickenhawk here….go serve in the funking military you’re so damned proud of, I’m sure they’re willing to recruit your overweight but straight-to-the-bone, supertrooper-ass. Go sacrifice, Rush, I’m sure you’d be proud of yourself. Maybe you’ll even scare away Al-Qaïda! Aren’t you willing to sacrifice for America? Aren’t you going to fight in this cultural war? Or do you think Al-Qaïda’s at home listening to your dumb radioshow everyday?! I don’t think so, if you want to change the hearts and minds of these anti-Americans, you better visit Baghdad like a proper soldier, WITHOUT ARMOR, mkay?!
September 28th, 2007 at 9:21 amDoesn’t matter if that fat piece of scum criticizes 1 or a million soldiers. He’s a Godamn coward and hypocrite for not serving during Vietnam. His has no spine to berate any military personnel.
September 28th, 2007 at 5:53 pmI think it would help the discussion if the entire transcript were posted or played. Media Matters has done it, to thier credit. The remark was made as a lead-in to a story about a specific phony soldier whom Mr. Limaugh goes on to relate. It’s a very damning story which did a lot of damage to our country and our military. I would hope that rather than just make this a moment to take pot shots at a radio host who brought this matter to light - not done anywhere else as far as I can see - why not address this serious issue of certain soldiers who do lie and who do tell “whoppers” such as this soldier did; lies that are then spread throughout the world and specifically, throughout the Middle East without any chance of them being recanted when the truth becomes known.
