Last week, 72 senators voted to condemn an ad by MoveOn.org with a resolution repudiating “any effort to attack the honor and integrity” of “all members of the United States Armed Forces.”
On the Senate floor and in the press, Sen. John Cornyn, who introduced the bill, was vitriolic in his rhetoric towards the ad, calling it a “a despicable political attack” that “crossed a historic line of decency.” He was joined in raucous condemnation by his Senate colleagues:
Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY): “This amendment gives our colleagues a chance to distance themselves from these despicable tactics, distance themselves from the notion that some group has them on a leash.”
Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT): “It is MoveOn that is the disgrace. And I think it is important that the entire Congress publicly repudiate these absurd charges.”
During the September 26 edition of his radio show, right-wing standard bearer Rush Limbaugh claimed that service members who support U.S. withdrawal from Iraq are actually “phony soldiers.” On the House floor last night, Rep. Frank Pallone (D-NJ) asked if those “who showed so much outrage towards MoveOn.org…will hold Rush Limbaugh to the same standard?”
There is a particular onus for Cornyn, McConnell and Hatch to put themselves on the record regarding Limbaugh, considering the fond relationship they’ve had with him in the past:
- “It dawned on me that Daschle’s probably never listened to Rush Limbaugh. I mean, there’s nothing particularly inflammatory about anything Rush Limbaugh says,” said McConnell in 2002. [Fox News Sunday 11/24/02]
- In 2002, Limbaugh headlined a fundraiser for Cornyn “where he predictably lambasted Democrats and liberals and helped raise almost $200,000″ for the soon-to-be Senator. “We need a Republican senate,” Limbaugh said at the event. [San Antonio Express-News 9/22/02]
- “I thank my father in heaven every day for people like you, Rush Limbaugh and others,” Hatch told Hannity in 2002 [Newhouse News Service 11/21/02]
Several Democratic members of Congress have already denounced Limbaugh’s comments and the White House is distancing itself from him. But Rush is refusing to apologize.
Will Cornyn, McConnell and Hatch step up and hold their friend Rush to the same standard they laid out in their “Sense of the Senate” resolution?
UPDATE: Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) is calling on Limbaugh to apologize, telling Time.com’s Ana Marie Cox that “it reflects very poorly on him” and “he would be well advised to retract it and apologize.”
UPDATE II: Mitt Romney’s camp has now weighed in on Limbaugh’s comment, saying that “Romney would disagree with the negative characterization of those men and women who serve with honor and distinction in the United States Military.”

“Sense of the Senate†= No Sense
September 28th, 2007 at 4:13 pmWhy are we still talking about t his?
September 28th, 2007 at 4:14 pmMove on, dot orgs!!
September 28th, 2007 at 4:15 pm
Uh, that would be a negative.
September 28th, 2007 at 4:16 pmThis is particularly egregious since when going after Moveon.org, the senators kept saying that an insult to Patreus is an insult to the troops. Now, Rush directly insulted troops.
September 28th, 2007 at 4:21 pmWill Cornyn, McConnell and Hatch step up and hold their friend Rush to the same standard they laid out in their “Sense of the Senate†resolution?
Of course not. Excuses will be made for him, if they are forced to talk about their friend at all. I don’t think any of the senators will actually agree with Rush about soldiers being “phony”, but they will claim he was quoted out of context. Or they will suddenly be filled with a desire to get “real work” done in the Senate and say they don’t have time to waste on a resolution condemning Rush.
September 28th, 2007 at 4:21 pmRush doesn’t need to apologize. He has every right to say what he said.
MoveOn doesn’t need to apologize, as they have the right to print their ad.
However, Congress and the Republicans need to be held accountable for their actions. If they are to criticize MoveOn for their attack, they need to criticize Rush.
September 28th, 2007 at 4:24 pmYou know, When they did away with the fairness in reporting doctrine they should have expected such things to occur, but now, to side with one rant or another…codemn one while applauding another?

September 28th, 2007 at 4:28 pmDoes the Republican side of our government have the courage to do as the Democrats have done?
September 28th, 2007 at 4:29 pmDid he apologize for mocking Michael J. Fox? or for his little racist ditty about Barrack Obama? or any other of his racist comments or slander against all those who dare disagree with the dog-doo-ma of the radical right? Limbaugh is a bloviating toad. One can only hope that the exposure he and his bigoted comrades enjoy might open the eyes of those Americans who still believe such biased rhetoric.

They’re used to it by now.
Water off a duck’s back…..
September 28th, 2007 at 4:30 pmThat’s at the heart of the matter. If the Repubs don’t step up and condemn Rush, then all of their histrionics over the NYT ad is just hot air.
As I see it, they have two choices - either condemn Rush or issue an apology to Move On. If they can’t do either one, then their credibility is shot and that fact should be shouted from the roof tops.

MoveOn.org isn’t allowed to tell the truth but Limbaugh the Republican who molest kids overseas and brings money to the Senator can say what ever he wants. Notice why Gonzales never bothered child molester because of the elected officials, employees of the US government and friends are committing the crimes. Rush knows he can say what ever he wants and do what he was because the Republicans will protect and support him no matter what.

September 28th, 2007 at 4:43 pmThere is a difference here. The Reps agree with Rush’s comments so they don’t feel it necessary to condemn him. They disagreed with MoveOn.Org. That’s the basic premise at work here. Rush speaks to their base so they don’t want to criticize him. They didn’t give a sh!t about MoveOn either but they hoped to spin their contempt to make a point. Just look at Walter Reed to see how well the Reps support the troops. Only a moron would listen to what they say rather then look at what they do. And they’re counting on that, they’re hoping for the moron vote. Which is why they attended the NRA debate. Their base doesn’t care that they skipped a debate on black issues, or Hispanic issues or gay issues. Mind you, their base is also too dumb to realize that unless they’re millionaires the Reps don’t give a sh!t about them either.

September 28th, 2007 at 5:37 pmI doubt any of you care about the truth, but just in case…..
Rush was talking about phony soldier Jesse MacBeth. MacBeth portrayed himself as a decorated Iraq war veteran who opposed the war. Since “Corporal” MacBeth fit the left’s anti-war template, the liberal media lapped up his lies. The truth? Mr. MacBeth was just sentenced to five months in jail for being…a phony soldier. MacBeth never served in Iraq, never won a Purple Heart, never reached the rank of corporal, was never an Army Ranger — and therefore never could have witnessed war crimes against Iraqi civilians as he claimed. In fact, MacBeth washed out of Army boot camp after 44 days.

I care about the truth. And it does appear that Rush qualified his “phony soldiers” statement to mean soldiers like McBeth that lie about their military experience. That does change the context of what he was saying. I guess because he’s such a pr1ck day in & day out people are willing to jump on him regardless of his intent on any given day. I’d prefer a clean slam, one that stands on its merit. This doesn’t appear to be one. Perhaps the reaction from the left is like the reaction to OJ this time in court… most feel he was guilty in the past & eluded doing time so they’re willing to slam him for anything he does, much like Rush & Oxycontin. He will get his day of reckoning, this just doesn’t appear to be it. I look forward to that day though.
September 28th, 2007 at 5:47 pmIbuprofen, you sir are a lying f*ck. No, really.

September 28th, 2007 at 5:51 pmHow can they not see what a liability he is? If you do, and I’m assuming it’s not edited, you’ll see that he mentions “phony soldiers” and then describes McBeth. That was a soldier who lied about being in Iraq and lied about what happened in Iraq. That would justify the term “phony soldier” as it applies to McBeth and anyone else who does not fight in Iraq but pretends that they do. I would never want to be put in the position of defending a POS like Rush but in this case, if you listen to the full transcript, I think you’ll see my point.

Because it is the Repuglican Way! The truth is only what they create it to be.
September 28th, 2007 at 6:12 pmSeven soldiers wrote the op-ed, hence the ’s’ behind the word soldier. McBeth is just one soldier. And, again, two of the soldiers who wrote the op-ed have already been killed. If you don’t want to be in the position of defending Rush, then f*cking stop defending him!
Comment by Ret. Col. Jack Ripper — September 28, 2007 @ 6:06 pm
Sigh. I’m on your side dude. But that doesn’t mean you’re right all the time. Nor am I. If 7 soldiers write an op-ed, and one of them lies about his involvement in the war and I say that that person is one of the “phony soldiers” that I hate, then that doesn’t mean I’m referring to the 7 writers. Just slow down & think. Better to nail Limbaugh for actual crimes rather then run with partial truths. If you acknowledge that Jessie MacBeth is in fact phony then you can’t argue the term. And adding the “s” to “soldier” doesn’t give any specificity to the statement. If black guys walk up to me and one kicks me in the balls and I say I hate a$$holes like that that doesn’t mean I hate all black guys. I just hate the dudes that are kicking my balls. Don’t attack me just because I disagree with you, it only makes you look bad. I assume you have watched that video now right? And I also agree that the video is something put together by Rush and could be edited. I said that in my initial post. Someone must have the original transcript… one that goes beyond the “phony soldiers” statement… one that verifies the discussion of Jessie MacBeth.

He actually says it twice. The second time he said it he was replying to a caller who was talking about the media interviewing troops. So now he’s talking about another set of troops other than those that wrote the op-ed piece. He’s talking about troops in general that talk to the media and call for a withdrawal.
September 28th, 2007 at 6:20 pmPerhaps, instead of jumping on the bandwagon, it would be wise to go to the source to see what the hullabaloo is all about. In context, the comment refers to Jessie MacBeth (some sources spell it Jesse Macbeth), a boot camp reject who claimed to be a decorated wounded Special Forces veteran. Jesse, and others like him who have been used to further the anti-war agenda, detail what they claim are atrocities they personally witnessed or performed in Iraq. The problem is that they never made it to being soldiers, much less to Iraq. Jessie was found guilty in court of falsifying his service record in an effort to obtain benefits. I don’t know about the others. Taken in context, the statement about “phony soldiers” is true and no apology should be necessary.
Repeatedly, these guys’ claims have been run, apparently without investigation as to their veracity or the claims’ authenticity, as illustrations of what is going on in Iraq. I can perhaps understand this happening once. Repeated incidents begin to look like the result of pursuing an objective of demeaning or debasing the troops serving in Iraq - as the old saying goes, “fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.†Although new claims have been repeatedly debunked and the claimants’ truthfulness impugned, I have yet to see any retractions or apologies by those who publish them. If any apology is owed, it is by these frauds and their supporters, not Rush Limbaugh.
It is fine to agree or disagree with the war, but the arguments need to be made on the basis of fact and not trumped up and easily verifiable lies knowingly told by either side’s proponents. The people trying to make a big deal out of Mr. Limbaugh’s comments are wrong. He made the comment on his show, to his audience, expressing his opinion in a clear opinion piece, and can provide independently verifiable facts to support his statement. The MoveOn.org ad was a big deal because it was a paid ad by a political action group, provided at a discount rate, and timed to attempt to publicly impugn the sworn testimony of a military commander before Congress in time of war. It personally attacked the general, not on the basis of objective verifiable fact, but on the basis of factless innuendo. It was a public statement intended for the widest possible public audience and the perpetrators had to admit that there were several violations of everything from the newspaper’s policies to personal integrity involved in its publication.
There is a big difference between calling someone who lied about being a soldier a “phony soldier†and calling a commander who has honorably fulfilled his duties, and made verifiable progress in reducing the number of civilian and military casualties occurring in Iraq since taking command, a betrayer of the public trust.
September 28th, 2007 at 6:21 pmApparently Rush did edit his rebuttal.

September 28th, 2007 at 6:29 pmYup, I was wrong. Rush edited his tape to remove stuff in the middle of where he refers to phony soldiers & then discusses Jessie MacBeth. His reference to phony soliders was not used in context with MacBeth at all. He was merely saying that soldiers that disagree with the war are phony. Then after going on about WMDs and other sh!t he comes back to the point and says…
“here is a “Morning Update” that we did recently talking about fake soldiers. This is a story of who the left…”
In other words he’s saying “while we’re on the topic of phony soldiers, here’s another phony”. I retract my previous posts. The fact that Rush felt the need to edit his defence tape proves that even he acknowledges that he phucked up.

Wow… that was a strange reply.
I never said it was a fake video. I pointed out that you were linking it “for anyone interested in the truth”, but it was just Rush spinning thins after the fact. “The truth” would be a link to the actual statement in question (where he made the comment about phony soldiers, NOT him talking about it after the fact).

September 28th, 2007 at 6:35 pmHey Dave C Do you really think that Limbaugh was referring to all soldiers who oppose the War as “phony”? He certainly didn’t say that either.
I suppose he should have suspended the conversation with his caller and immediately put the term “phony soldiers” into unambiguous context lest Media Matter create a context of their own choosing…. as is their modus operandi

Yeah. I do. I believe that most people that support the war feel that way about anyone that disagrees. I don’t know how that could surprise you. Just look at the last 6 years. Dixie chicks, questioning the patriotism of people that disagree, removing Generals that don’t go along with GWB, Nugent’s comments about anyone that disagrees… it’s everywhere, why wouldn’t it make sense to include troops that disagree?
September 28th, 2007 at 7:10 pmThat’s the conservative culture of responsibility for you. It’s not Rush’s fault that he said something. It’s Media Matters’ fault for specifically documenting it.
September 28th, 2007 at 7:14 pmp.s. why does Rush say that “here is the entire transcript, in context” and then remove 1 minute 35 seconds of the conversation? By doing that he linked the “phony soldiers” comment with the “Jessie MacBeth” comment. That alone shows deceit. If he wanted to be tried in a public court of opinion on his merits he should have run it properly unedited and let the public decide. By not doing so he has worsened his position.

Ironic you wingnuts would whine about how things ‘morph’, after you morphed Al Gore’s leadership in making the internet available to the public into “Al Gore said he invented the internet”. Those kind of ‘morphing’ smears are more your thing, than progressives. Maybe that’s why you’re so sensitive about them - guilt?
As for Rush’s statement - caller2 specifically said the real soldiers were those who were pro-iraq-war, meaning the phony soldiers were those opposed to the war. Rush didn’t reject this statement, and in fact acknowledged the statement positively. All of you Rush defenders should be ashamed of yourselves - hypocrites!

Now I understand.. It’s not only their words that you interpret, but with someone like Limbaugh, you interpret them in the light of the “inherent evil intent” of his persona. I guess that makes examining transcripts pointless.
Nonetheless, I still admire your intellectual honesty
By the way, I am not an advocate of the War. I am a libertarian, miles away from either political party . There is much I don’t agree with Rush about but I judge him to be more honest than Keith Olbermann and others of that ilk
I do usually vote Republican because I so despise the socialist thread that’s woven so firmly into your party. But I also despise “W” who, like many of the GOP politicians, is a big government, pseudo-conservative fraud.

We can all read the transcript, we can all listen to the audio, and draw our own conclusions. We all have already done so by now.
It is obvious Rush was referring to any and all soldiers who criticise Bush’s “policy” in Iraq. Unless, of course, you are listening to Limbaugh’s edited version of the show -because it’s Media Matters who is being dishonest by saving the entire exchange.
Who exactly do they they are fooling?

You find a fat clown who railed for years about drug addicts being “criminals” until he himself was found out and nabbed as being one , as believable in any way ?

It was clear to me at the time that he was making a blanket assertion that the soldiers who did not support the war were deficient in some manner - loyalty, intelligence, sanity, etc. I understood his use of the term “phoney soldiers” to refer collectively and derogatively to those soldiers.
There may “lies about conservative commentators” that may “end up killing” Democrats, but this isn’t one of them.

He made those remarks about Jesse Macbeth, exclusively, not about any of the other persons that you mentioned - none of whom, I might add, have I ever heard of before.
His show is always the same: anyone who doesn’t agree with him is stupid, disloyal, dishonest or insane.
Occasionally, his points have some merit. But usually they are so couched in hate, paranoia or pig-headedness that they are in no way a starting point for a reasoned discourse.
There are enough real soldiers for Limbaugh to present, discuss, debate, and refute. His relentless denunciation of exposed fraud(s) to debase any and all anti-war efforts is much like the use of “Piltdown Man” to debunk evolution in that it is dishonest and irrelevant to the argument.
September 29th, 2007 at 2:01 pmSomeone needs to educate the Congress on the 1st Amendment. Pathetic!
September 29th, 2007 at 4:13 pmThe GOP Spin Machine is a remarkable thing to behold. Today’s edition has Rush’s Hotheads making the false claim that Rush didn’t mean to insult anti-war soldiers by calling them “phony.” Who could ever imagine Rush doing something like THAT?
You just have to take a trip to Rushland for the contorted explanation that Rush meant one specific soldier with his slur. BUT, unfortunately, for Rush and his posse of defenders, there is a transcript which proves that the one soldier they mention was NOT the subject of Rush’s nasty demeaning comments.
So, I’m sure they will try again with some other bogus excuse. Must be fun to worry more about covering Rush’s butt than worrying about the plight of our soldiers stuck in Iraq or the hassles they face when they come back to the US and tell the truth about Bush’s disastrous War.
September 29th, 2007 at 4:36 pmToday a friend of mine returned from Iraq. His job was hauling tanks all over Iraq and he said it was hell. He was there for just over a year. He said that when he started his tour the roadside bombs were small and mostly ineffective but as time went on they’ve become more and more deadly. He said that that borders with Iran and Syria and not secure and that all of the bombs that are killing our soilders are being made by Iran. Why would you start a war and not secure the borders of known terrorist countries? It makes no sense.
If G.W. Bush is so tough why does he let Iran continue to blow up our soilders? Why did he let their piece of shit president come into the U.S. and walk away alive when he knows that Iran is killing our troops.
I’m just glad my buddy made it home alive.

The thing that makes it truly awful is that you have democratic Congress men and woman plus senators bringing up mediamatters story like its the truth.
