Senate Democratic Leaders Demand Apology For Limbaugh’s ‘Outrageous,’ ‘Unconscionable’ Remarks

ThinkProgress has obtained a letter being circulated on Capitol Hill today by the Senate Democratic Leadership that calls on Clear Channel CEO Mark Mays to repudiate its employee Rush Limbaugh’s “phony troops” remark. Clear Channel is Limbaugh’s parent company, and it owns or operates at least 1,165 radio stations in the United States.

The letter, signed by Sens. Harry Reid (D-NV, Dick Durbin (D-IL), Charles Schumer (D-NY), and Patty Murray (D-WA), states that Limbaugh’s comments were “outrageous” and “unconscionable”:

Although Americans of goodwill debate the merits of this war, we can all agree that those who serve with such great courage deserve our deepest respect and gratitude. That is why Rush Limbaugh’s recent characterization of troops who oppose the war as “phony soldiers” is such an outrage.

Our troops are fighting and dying to bring to others the freedoms that many take for granted. It is unconscionable that Mr. Limbaugh would criticize them for exercising the fundamentally American right to free speech. Mr. Limbaugh has made outrageous remarks before, but this affront to our soldiers is beyond the pale.

Yesterday, ThinkProgress asked whether lawmakers who voted to attack a MoveOn newspaper ad would now condemn Limbaugh. The Senate leadership is challenging all their colleagues to demonstrate whether they can show principled condemnation by signing onto the letter. It specifically calls on Clear Channel to issue an apology and demands Limbaugh do the same:

Thousands of active troops and veterans were subjected to Mr. Limbaugh’s unpatriotic and indefensible comments on your broadcast. We trust you will agree that not a single one of our sons, daughters, neighbors and friends serving overseas is a “phony soldier.” We call on you to publicly repudiate these comments that call into question their service and sacrifice and to ask Mr. Limbaugh to apologize for his comments.

Read the full letter here. Call your Senators and ask them to sign on.

UPDATE: More smears against the military by Limbaugh. Huff Post notes that he called Iraq war vet Paul Hackett a “staff puke,” claiming he went to Iraq “to pad [his] resume,” and attacked him as “a liberal hiding behind a military uniform.”

What makes me sick is that men and women are fighting and dying over there while Dems and Repubs make big hay over these ads and those comments. Just do SOMETHING to bring them home and out of that hell! We can condemn that and this until faces are blue, but it does not save one single life. Let the Repubs grow a conscience and Dems grow some nads. But too much energy is taken up by this ridiculous finger-pointing left and rightward. Bring ‘em home.

  6. missmolly says:

We’ll see if as many Republicans are willing to condemn Rush as there were Democrats willing to condemn MoveOn.

And then, once each side has gotten theirs, maybe the Senate can go back to DOING SOMETHING PRODUCTIVE instead of passing an endless chain of “sense of the Senate” resolutions?

Oh wait — the Senate is all about obstruction these days, not production.

  7. tombaker says:

Just wait a few minutes – the dittoheads are still busy trying to prove something on the other Rush threads right now.

Didn’t take you long to reveal your true colors, did it? You do realize that as a Federal PAC, Move on can’t accept donations larger than $5,000 and that if Soros did donate to Move on, a contribution of that size would give him little voice in the organization at all. The thought of Soros’ invisible hand only exists in the tiny minds of the conservative conspiracy theorists.

Here it comes, the “Rush was really talking about Jesse MacBeth” excuse. Along with “the Left has been using Jesse MacBeth” excuse.

Sorry, up until your buddies tried to claim he was relevant, I’d never even heard of the guy. The Left has been doing a terrible job using him if the Righties are the only ones who know who he is.

I believe he was a soldier that supposedly wrote some blogs from Iraq (published by the NYTs) and were later found to be false.

Hence the reason Rush was doing all he could to backtrack from his comments and blame this guy for the filth that spewed from his piehole.

  21. Veritas says:

This photo of junkie Limbaugh takes the cake! If this doesn’t epitomize his brand of hate, nothing does.

Since Congress took time from it’s otherwise mundane (sarcasm) schedule to admonish MoveOn for what will be shown to be true; that is, David Petreus not only betrayed himself but betrayed each of us when his cooked books and lies are exposed, then it would be totally hypocritical if there did not admonish the likes of this druggie, vile filled, military hating draft dodger.

  22. hellinabucket says:

MacBeth wasn’t a soldier and was exposed as a liar. He got what he deserved.

Rush has been exposed as a liar and has slandered the US Military. He’s now getting what he deserves.

Quit defending him and acknowledge his remarks are harmful the the US Military.

Have any of you read the transcript for yourselves? I was mad as hell about what Limbaugh “said” but it’s not true. I don’t have to agree with him politically but I will not stand for breathing false information. Mr. Limbaugh was referring about a “veteran” who testified that he had seen and committed atrocities in Iraq. This 23 year old was kick out if boot camp after 44 days. He has no purple heart, did not serve in Iraq, and did not participate in what he said he did. I don’t have to like Limbaugh but I will not sign on to lies. I have more character than that and I hope you do to.

  35. hellinabucket says:

You fail to realize that as long as the Republicans are allowed to frame the debate, the Dems will always be responding and never attacking.

The Republicans will never cease attempting to frame the debate. They will never cease to question the patriotism of the left. It has been this way for several years now and what do we have to show for it?

I’m sorry if you disagree, but the Republicans need to be challenged.

  39. hellinabucket says:

Welcome to the discussion johnny. So when Rush said “phony soldiers” he was talking about who and how many? And since I’m not listening to his opinion show I wouldn’t know how he clarified this.

Could you enlighten me on this. And yes, until a clarification he is calling all soldiers “phony”.

  41. bilbobaggins says:

OT but very relevant. On Ed Schultz yesterday Dennis Kucinich said he is seriously considering introducing a “privilege resolution on impeachment”. I looked it up and here’s what he is talking about:

    http://www.impeachbush.tv/impeach/privilege.html

I say we all contact Kucinich and encourage him to do this. Since none of the other Democrats have the courage to directly confront Bush, Kucinich feels like he may have to do it. Specifically he is very worried about Bush attacking Iran. Here’s where to go to contact him:

    http://www.dennis4president.com/contact/

While you are there, check out what Kucinich has to say. I think you will be very favorably impressed. If the MSM had not decided to boycott him, I believe that Kucinich would be right up there with the top contenders.

  42. Amy P says:

This is what happens when you listen to a liberal interpret what Rush said on his show. Did any of you listen to the program? I did, live. Rush was discussing Jesse MacBeth with the caller. Jesse MacBeth IS a phony soldier in every sense of the word.

I’ve been an Army wife for 14 years and work on a military post. My husband is an OIF and he agrees that Jesse MacBeth is a phony soldier. There’s no doubt about this. Rush was not referring to all soldiers (unlike John Kerry…oh, he was just referring to the ones in Iraq; or John Murtha…oh, he was just referring to the Haditha Marines who’ve been aquitted of the charges against them). Rush was referring to Jesse MacBeth who is a crowing example of how eager the anti-war left is to believe the worst about our troops. MacBeth was never a soldier; he never made it out of basic training.

You guys all owe Rush an apology. This Army wife and her soldier stand by Rush and see him as a champion of the military.

Just can’t resist perpetuating myths, can you Keltoi. George Soros has nothing to do with moveon.org. That is a myth that the right created.

But I do agree with you, the Democrats should introduce a “sense of the senate” resolution to condemn Limbaugh.

  44. hellinabucket says:

MacBeth is a phony soldier in the sense that he never was a soldier. Amy you should know that you aren’t a real soldier until you pass basic.

Rush said “phony soldier” in the context of the left parading them out to slam the military. Whatever MacBeth was attempting is abhorrent.

Any Kerry comment or Murtha comment is in the same vein as this one from Rush. It’s pitiful on all sides.

Rush doesn’t deserve an apology. He’s an alarmist and is enjoying all of this.

  48. JustAGI says:

I e-mailed this letter to TX Senator Cornyn. (I live in Texas)

    Mr. Cornyn
You, along with 71 other senators, recently passed a resolution condemning Moveon.org’s ad against Gen. David Patraeus. Much of the rhetoric I heard from many of your colleagues in support of resolution was spoken with a high degree of passion and uproar. I, personally, didn’t find the ad that offensive; but I figured that Congress was simply sticking up for the troops.

However, recently an influential and outspoken radio talk show host, Rush Limbaugh — who makes his partisanship no secret — made an offhand remark regarding troops who have a difference in political opinion regarding Operation Iraqi Freedom. Mr. Limbaugh claimed that those who disagree with the Iraq policy are “Phony Soldiers”, in effect minimizing the sacrifices of over 3800 of my dead comrades, and countless more permanently scarred in mind, body, and soul. Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines are not robots programmed to believe in a certain party’s ideologies. We are American men and women first and foremost, who still carry with us our own personal sets of values and ideals regardless of whether or not we put on a uniform. To discount our service and say we are phony is a disgrace to everything that Mr. Limbaugh — a man who has never taken a step in a pair of combat boots — takes for granted in this nation.

I would hope that you would condemn Mr. Limbaugh with the very same degree of furor and passion with which you went after Moveon.org. This is not about my personal politics, sir. This is about myself and my comrades getting the respect that we deserve as troops and as American patriots.

    Sincerely,
    XXXXXXXX

I honestly doubt anything will come of it, but I can’t say I didn’t try.

CALLER 2: The phony soldiers. If you talk to a real soldier, they are proud to serve. They want to be over in Iraq. They understand their sacrifice, and they’re willing to sacrifice for their country.

Notice he says phony soldiers (plural)

He does not mention MacBeth here at all.

I don’t believe Rush was slandering all soldiers. I believe he poorly choose his words. I believe he infered active duty soldiers that have spoken out. He won’t clarify that but I don’t really expect him to.

I do find it interesting that earlier this week there was a thread discussing the horrid treatment vets were still getting from this administration.

It had less posters than this does now. And I don’t think one of the defenders of Rush spoke out on it at all.

I cannot compete the the verbal barrage that comes from Rush. He is an inciter and an alarmist.

I believe the “phony soldiers” remark was insulting to soldiers. I am a vet and don’t believe anyone who hasn’t served can be justified in making that statement with any accuracy.

  61. Amy P says:

Here’s the context via Rush’s podcast.

It starts out with a caller, a soldier, who called to talk about “real” soldiers serving in Iraq, who know they will likely serve in Iraq and/or Afghanistan after basic training and AIT vs. “phony” soldiers championed by the left like Jesse MacBeth, who said:

“We were doing the night raids in houses, and uh, we would pull people out and we’d have them all, like ah, on the knees and zip-tied. And, ah, we’d ask the guy questions, the whole family, the, the man-of-the-house questions. And if he didn’t answer the way we liked, you know, we would shoot his youngest kid in the head. And we’d keep going; this was our interrogation. He could be innocent, you know. He could be just an average Joe trying to support his family. And if he didn’t give us a satisfactory answer, we’d start killing off his family until he told us something. If he didn’t know anything, guess he was SOL, you know — which sucked. I didn’t feel anything. I just wanted to do my job.

If some people came, came, came into my, came, came into America, a huge foreign army doing the crap that we did to them, I’d just like them to do the same thing back. Cause people have the right to fight for their families and their country, and especially if we are terror, terrorizing someone’s country; they have the right to fight back. And I don’t blame them. I would do the same thing.

A lot of people from the military that are over there fighting, they don’t want no more war. And all it takes is a few good men, to, to hold the rallying flag for them to rally behind and, and we’ll stop this shit. The thing is that the government is doing so much to not let us be heard. You know, the mainstream media won’t play a lot of stuff; I talk a lot; they don’t play a lot of the stuff that we talk about. They cut it out, and, and only play what the people, what they want people to hear. “

I’m sure you know MacBeth’s story. Rush was referring to him and Jimmy Massey types (Massey was a soldier who was discharged from the Army for PTSD and was sent home from Iraq after 6 weeks for chickening out), who lied about war crimes that he didn’t see and cannot be corroborated becasue they didn’t happen.

Those are the “phony soldiers” Rush and the caller were talking about. Listen to the entire 7 minute discourse via the podcast link to You Tube. The transcript #57 posted isn’t from Rush’s site (of course) it’s from Media Matters, so it stops far short of contextual. He goes on just AFTER Media Matters ends the transcript to describe Jesse MacBeth as the “phoney soldier”.

I wonder why Media Matters didn’t post the entire transcript? Hmmmm…Why, not even a link to the real transcript. I guess they know it’s easier to mislead a bunch of lefties with a partial transcript than to risk posting the entire thing.

    Comment by Johnny Swank — September 28, 2007 @ 4:15 pm

I actually did read the transcript from Rush’s show with the “phony soldiers” remark. Not once did he indicate he was talking about Jesse Macbeth. Furthermore, Jesse Macbeth is only one person — Rush definitely used the plural. The “phony soldiers” remark was made by Rush in response to his caller saying “they never talk to real soldiers. They like to pull these soldiers that come up out of the blue and talk to the media.” The only thing I can infer from this exchange is that Rush is applying the label to any soldier who “talk(s) to the media”. Would this include the op-ed written by soldiers from the 82nd Airborne? Are they all phony? Some of them have suffered not so phony deaths since.

This is all just Rush spin. Rush also calls it a “smear” when his exact words are thrown back at him. He calls O’Reilly’s racist musings about Sylvia’s in Harlem “innocent comments”. And he criticizes people for not going to his website when he CHARGES people to do so (you can get today’s stuff for free, but you have to be a subscriber to get into the archives).

Spin all you want, Rush. But it will take more spin than you can muster to dislodge yourself from this cowpie.

  67. hellinabucket says:

Amy, Jimmy Massey’s name doesn’t come up in the original transcript, nor does it come up in today’s so far.

I’m done with Rush Limbaugh, he has lied and skirted the truth for more things than I care to count. He himself said he is an entertainer (playboy ariticle) and that’s what I consider him. It’s unfortunate that his “schtick” convinces so many on his distortions.

McCain has asked him to apologize. I thought you guys were done eating him up? He’s back for seconds, start the feasting on McCain 2nd course.

Right Wing Loon Michael wants to know where all the accomplishments of the Democrats are. Well Loon, they are all behind the Republican’s filibuster threats. You know, the “it deserves an up or down vote” Republicans? I really do wish that you loons had nuked the filibuster. If you had, we would be in a lot better shape as a nation than we are now.

By the way, the military is representative of all of society. There are liberals in the military (the proof is Abu Ghraib.. you don’t have Christian conservatives getting female soldiers pregnant and disobeying orders, abusing inmates). But Phony Soldiers are ones who LIE about what goes on in the war. Rush is right. If he were saying all soldiers who disagree with the war are phony soldiers I’d disagree with him. I know a couple soldiers who disagree with the war but they are not phony. This isn’t a matter of all soldiers, it’s a matter of fake, phony or lying soldiers making up the facts to suit their anti-war agenda.

Here are some other “phony soldiers”:
    -Jesse MacBeth (doing jail time)
    -Jimmy Massey
-Scott Thomas Beauchamp, the discredited “Baghdad Diarist”
    -Amorita Randall
-Josh Lansdale (who was snatched up and appeared in Wesley Clark’s ad)
    -Micah Wright

Heard of any of these, #57?

But, but, but, you’re the majority?
    Comment by Michael

Loon Michael, are you a moron or what? A majority of 1 cannot overturn a filibuster threat. And that so called “majority” is not really a majority because LIEberman is more a Republic than a Democrat.

Why was it OK for the Republics to demand an “up or down vote”, but not the Democrats? Why was it wrong for the Democrats to filibuster but it’s OK for the Republics. What are you, a hypocrite? (that’s a rhetorical question, btw).

Right Wing Loon Vendetta thinks that we should all take Rush’s word for it that he was not slandering the military. He got caught with his pants down when he slurred our brave men and women in the military. Now, today, he has come up with some excuse saying that he was really talking about something else. They are good at that, the Right Wing Loons. They get caught with their pants down and then they either “misspoke”, were “misquoted” or “misunderstood”.

    Comment by Amy P — September 28, 2007 @ 4:42 pm

And I wonder why your transcript has no mention at all of the MacBeth story that the caller was supposedly referencing. Perhaps it’s because the name doesn’t show up until after Rush is off the phone with the caller and he starts talking about a previous broadcast.

The caller makes no reference to MacBeth, nor does the previous caller, who spoke out against the war and was told by Rush that he couldn’t really be a Republican if he didn’t support the war. In fact, Rush mocked him for his opinion.

The whole MacBeth strawman is intended to draw attention away from what anyone who is not a dittohead can see very clearly, in plain English. And the only people that even know who MacBeth is are the dittoheads that have been listening to Rush use him as an example of anti-war soldiers and Vets in an attempt to discredit their opinions.

The dishonest ones are Rush and you dittoheads.

They are almost as worse as the religous right in terms of how they hurt the party in the long run. Your card will always be safe bilbobaggins.
    Comment by Johnny Swank

Hey Right Wing Loon Johnny – using their parents credit card? Is that anything like George Bush using your great grandchildren’s credit card to pay for the fiasco in Iraq?

You only wish that the people who support moveon.org are what you want to define them as. Too bad you are wrong. And you are wrong about what the people in this country want. A recent survey showed that a large majority of people in this country identify with liberal values on things like health care, education, and of course the war. You are dead Loon Johnny, you just won’t recognize it until one day in 2009 when you wake up with a Democratic President and a veto proof majority. Then your nightmare will begin.

Right Wing Loon Johnny, like Right Wing Loon Amy, think that just because Limbaugh has made up a pile of hooey to try to justify what he said, we should all just believe him and give him the benefit of the doubt.

Sorry Loons, I won’t do that. This is not the first time that Limbaugh has disparaged people and then tried to talk his way out of it. The truth of the matter is that Limbaugh is a soulless slime who hates everything and anyone that doesn’t fit into his myopic view of the world.

Loon Tracy – I have a suggestion for you. Leave! I would never stay at a place that made me want to throw up, why would you want to do that?

And No, I did not read Rush Limbaugh’s excuse. Why should I? It will prove nothing other than the fact that the man has no soul and doesn’t know how to admit when he made a mistake.

Besides, I’ve read the analysis of the people who had the stomach to read his hooey and they pretty much say he’s full of it. That he didn’t mention his straw man until after the people he talked to were off the phone.

  111. bilbobaggins says:

“I had the nerve to post something that challenged their myopic view of the world.”
Are you sure it wasn’t because of some personal insult you posted?

Of course it was because of an insult I posted. Right Wing Loons consider any opinion that is contrary to theirs to be a personal insult. I did not call anyone a name like your friends Billo, Rush and Hannity do, I simply expressed an opinion that was contrary to theirs (including a link to my data). They allowed me to do that, I think three times, before they banned me. Didn’t hurt my feelings except for the fact that they shot themselves in the foot. By banning my IP, they banned everyone who works at the company I work at from being able to view redstate.org. I doubt many of the people I work with would even want to go there, but you never know.

By your answer, I take it you think anyone who insults another poster should be banned. Well by following your rules, 90% of the Right Wing Loons who post here would have been banned a long time ago.

    Where did Rush apologize? Here?

So I will bigly, hugely admit that I was wrong, and I will apologize to Michael J. Fox, if I am wrong in characterizing his behavior on this commercial as an act.”

That is not an apology. It is a conditional statement. “I will apologize if.”

Please…show us where Rush admitted to being wrong in his characterization, and where he said “I apologize.”

As for Clinton, yes, it was about the sex. Republicans were itching to get him out of office only months after he had taken office in 1993. Not only did they want to boot him out of office, they wanted to embarrass him to the fullest extent. They didn’t try to get him on anything that would have harmed national security like, say, selling nuclear secrets to China. Nope…not sensational enough. Paula Jones was their ticket. Poor little Paula was in it for the attention. I’m sure you recall her getting in front of the cameras for all the world to see and crying about how terrible her ordeal with Clinton had been. Her performance was so convincing that you’d think she couldn’t stand to be anywhere near Clinton, yet on two occasions after her crying stint, she appeared at a National Press Club event where Clinton also attended, and she showed up at an appearance by Clinton in a town that had been hit by a tornado. On top of that, this poor little victim was so overtaken by grief and so humiliated that she got a boob and nose job so that she’d look good on TV and posed nude in Playboy.

Besides, if anyone is a phony, it is you. But like a good little troll, you drop in on one of the threads, drop a few sh*t bombs, and then disappear.

  120. Bad Eye says:

    Comment by Tracy1 — September 29, 2007 @ 9:24 am

Saying that you will apologize “if” is not an apology. It is the promise of an apology if a condition is met. “I apologize” is an apology, and Rush never did that.

  121. Severus says:

All those on their knees fellating Rush and spinning his crap need to realize that in the reality based world we know what he was saying and so do you. He was slandering every soldier who does nto have a political outlook that mirrors his own, and especially those who speak out. You are grasping at straws when you try to pull his discussions from earlier in the show into this debate. His message and meaning are very clear, stop the spinning.

  122. johnrohan says:

    This is ridiculous.
I am an Iraq vet myself, and I would caution you all against trying to make a big deal over the Rush Limbaugh transcript from Media Matters.
In the audio and transcript they disseminated, they deliberately cut off the next things that Rush said. When Rush referred to “phoney soldiers” he was talking about fakes like Jesse Macbeth, who falsely claimed to be an Army ranger and Iraq veteran. You can hear the complete audio here:
    http://homepage.mac.com/mkoldys/iblog/C168863457/E20070928194023/index.html

  123. Bad Eye says:

What about it, Tracy? Where is Rush’s apology? Oh, that’s right. There wasn’t one.

Just as if I called you an idiot, and then a few days later say “I will apologize if my characterization of Tracy was wrong.”

If I never admit that I was wrong, then I haven’t apologized.
