In a press briefing this morning, White House Press Secretary Dana Perino was pressed specifically about Rush Limbaugh’s “phony soldiers” comment. She responded: “It’s not what the President would have used, no.” Watch it:
Recall, Bush blasted the MoveOn ad as “disgusting,” and he lamented that more Democrats did not “speak out strongly” against it. TPM observes that the White House response to Limbaugh is “hardly the scathing condemnation that MoveOn earned at the hands of the President of course.”
UPDATE: Taylor Marsh does a round up of some of the indignation directed at MoveOn that came from the right wing.
UPDATE II: The Weekly Standard steps up to defend Limbaugh, while acknowledging his words were “poorly chosen.”
UPDATE III: In remarks on his radio station today, Rush Limbaugh refused to apologize for his “phony soldiers” remark, but instead turned his fire on Media Matters, the “drive-by media,” and Rep. John Murtha (D-PA). C&L has the audio.

September 28th, 2007 at 1:43 pmI want George to label Rush as a disgusting paundit. If he doesn’t then the latest resolution MUST be repealed. He is the president of all the people and not just 28% of them no matter what ROVE tells him.

September 28th, 2007 at 1:47 pmI was trying to find the picture of Rush sitting behind Bush at one of the state of the union addresses, but Rush+Bush in the google image directory brings up way to much stuff. Some of it pretty funny.

September 28th, 2007 at 1:47 pmWow. Just a QUESTION about whether Bush’s pet general is telling the truth ignites a fire big enough to result in a censure by the United States Senate…
But an outright heinous INSULT to our serving soldiers and several top generals by Rush (”phony” soldiers???) results in …nothing?
WTF??
I guess “that’s different.”
September 28th, 2007 at 1:49 pmAnn Coulter slimes soldiers all the time, and Bush never cares, so he really could care less about Limbaugh doing it. The key fact here is that Dubya dislikes any soldiers who do not kiss his butt.

And the sad thing about it is that Rush is on Armed Forces Radio so many of our troops probably heard that exchange. Can you imagine how that made them feel? Oh, yeah, the soldiers who listen to Limbaugh probably agree with him. They probably think they are the only “real” soldiers because they have convinced themselves that there really is a good reason for them being where they are. It’s like the parents who lose a child have to convince themselves it was for a just reason, otherwise they would probably go insane.

September 28th, 2007 at 2:21 pmRepublicans = Hypocrites
I think it’s actually more serious than that. It’s gone beyond hypocrisy and into deep psychological problems.
There are just so many examples of them freaking out about something which they have themselves previously done – it’s amazing. There has to be some kind of willful suppression of thought. That’s more than hypocrisy. The ability to generate a thought and express it while at the same time isolating and compartmentalizing that thought so previous statements and thoughts never are compared to it is scary.
What kind of rational person never subjects a single thought to scrutiny? It’s like they don’t think about the thought, it just sort of poops out like a turd.
September 28th, 2007 at 2:22 pmLefty, even pooping out a turd requires some thought. Just saying…

September 28th, 2007 at 2:36 pmLet’s look at the track record here:
1) MoveOn.org, a progressive political action group, runs a full-page ad in the NYTimes, challenging the credibility of General Bushpuppet’s report and urging him to tell the truth. REPUB REACTION: Bush calls the ad “disgusting” and calls upon Democrats to repudiate it. Senate passes a resolution condemning the ad. Repubs everywhere refer to the ad as treasonous, slanderous, etc.
2) Rush Limbaugh, a right-wing radio show host, applies the label “phony soldiers” to any member of the military who criticizes the Iraq war. REPUB REACTION: Dana Perino says “It’s not what the President would have used, no.” A few Repubs claim Rush was quoted out of context. Most Repubs are just silent.
Would somebody explain to me how this flagrant double-standard is NOT blatant hypocrisy?
September 28th, 2007 at 2:37 pmYou should know your own “Progressive†reps continue to fund the war they were elected to end.

The silence is deafening from the Righties. While some wouldn’t want to be associated with this smear, I can’t help thinking many are mute because they think it will somehow be good for them if Rush is slapped down for his comments. They are in competition for eyeballs, and if conservatives think Rush gives them a black eye, perhaps these eyeballs will go elsewhere for conservative content, namely them.

Peggy Noonan is pretty hot for a Republican, especially for not a young Republican. I think I first realized this when she was on Stephen Colbert’s show. She’s attractive, she’s smart, she’s a decent writer, she’s just messed up in the brain somehow. Like Perino. Otherwise, she’d be something other than a Republican.

The problem with “just a question” is that the question contained “an outright heinous INSULT” to a “top general”.
What Limbaugh said was abhorrent as was the ad by moveon.org. This just shows that there are people on both sides of the issue who want so badly to have their way that they are willing to forgo common decency.

September 28th, 2007 at 3:59 pmPart of the problem is that the rightwing reaction to MoveOn’s ad was baldfaced ridiculous and an exercise in mutual masterbation. It was a thinly veiled effort to once again change the subject and distract the public via the media from what is really going on. So then as is the pattern (and strategy), the rightwing acts as though the complaints about Rush’s comment can be dismissed as mere partisan games.

You really do need to try a little harder to keep up, bud. Moveon smeared a soldier with whom they disagree; Rush smeared soldiers with whom he disagrees. I didn’t change the subject and I certainly didn’t say they are two different things. I could go a little farther and point out that moveon’s smear appeared in a major newspaper and smeared one specific man by name. Rush, whose comment was abhorrent, didn’t single out anyone in this particular comment. ;)
September 29th, 2007 at 12:40 pmHave any of you bothered to read or listen to what Rush actually said?
http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_092807/content/01125106.guest.html
Or have you just blindly swallowed what Harry Reid and the rest have said? I’ve read all the comments here and they show quite clearly that most if not all of you haven’t done any research on what he actually said. If you hate Rush or think his political ideas are stupid then thats fine. Its your choice. But if you are going to be angry at him get angry over something he actually said.
When he talked about phony soldiers he was talking about people like Jesse Macbeth who lied about their service and made up stories of what happened. He was never in Iraq and never saw and Iraqi mosque and has been in court to prove that very point.
RUSH ARCHIVE: It’s not possible intellectually to follow these people.
CALLER: No, it’s not. And what’s really funny is they never talk to real soldiers. They like to pull these soldiers that come up out of the blue and spout to the media.
RUSH: The phony soldiers.
CALLER: The phony soldiers. If you talk to any real soldier and they’re proud to serve, they want to be over in Iraq, they understand their sacrifice and they’re willing to sacrifice for the country.
RUSH: They joined to be in Iraq.
“Now, recently, Jesse MacBeth, poster boy for the anti-war left, had his day in court. And you know what? He was sentenced to five months in jail and three years probation for falsifying a Department of Veterans Affairs claim and his Army discharge record. He was in the Army. Jesse MacBeth was in the Army, folks, briefly. Forty-four days before he washed out of boot camp. Jesse MacBeth isn’t an Army Ranger, never was. He isn’t a corporal, never was. He never won the Purple Heart, and he was never in combat to witness the horrors he claimed to have seen. ”
Just some food for thought.

The point is that this is all stupid. When the general goes in front of the congress to give a “report” that is CLEARLY political, then he is fair game. It is not a “smear” to question the integrity of someone in the Bush Administration. It is common sense. He has gone through so many generals now – ridiculed, fired and belittled several who were right but had the nerve to disagree with Him that it is well within our rights to be suspicious.
We’ve already had a top Bush general lie to our faces in a shameful act of misinformation and his name was COLIN POWELL. So don’t give me your bullsh!t outrage, we’ve already been down this road.

October 2nd, 2007 at 1:42 pm“When the general goes in front of the congress to give a “report†that is CLEARLY political, then he is fair game.”
