Freedom Watch’s next target: Iran.

By Amanda Terkel on Sep 29th, 2007 at 10:06 pm

Freedom Watch’s next target: Iran.

The New York Times reports that next month, the White House-front group Freedom’s Watch “will sponsor a private forum of 20 experts on radical Islam that is expected to make the case that Iran poses a direct threat to the security of the United States”:

Although the group declined to identify the experts, several were invited from the American Enterprise Institute, a Washington research group with close ties to the White House. Some institute scholars have advocated a more confrontational policy to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, including keeping military action as an option. [...]

“If Hitler’s warnings were heeded when he wrote ‘Mein Kampf,’ he could have been stopped,” said Bradley Blakeman, 49, the president of Freedom’s Watch and a former deputy assistant to Mr. Bush. “Ahmadinejad is giving all the same kind of warning signs to us, and the region — he wants the destruction of the United States and the destruction of Israel.”

So will Iran be invading Poland soon? Neo-con logic is bewildering to the sane.

  2. budpaul Says:

Did I miss something? When did Ahmadinejad advocate the destruction of the United States? At least, anymore so than the yahoos at Freedoms Watch advocate for the destruction of Iran.

  3. Juan C. Says:

budpaul...doesnt matter. Loonies will believe anything in order to keep killing innocent people. It´s what they do.

The same experts who took this country to war with Iraq four year ,and we still do not know how to end this war.

  5. Jackie Says:

Without the draft we have no troops and if the
idiots choose to bomb Iran America can look
for many countries to protect Iran as for US
we'll have to go it alone. It would be interesting
to see how all the United Nations join together
and saction the United States for Illegal Invasion.
This will make History for the US as this will be
the first time all the Nations of the World team
up against the United States. Russia would be
smiling and China will be making deals with the
    Middle East.

  6. bilbobaggins Says:

Give me a friggin break. Iran is 7 to 10 years away from having the kind of nuclear technology they need to make a bomb and all of a sudden they are an imminent threat to the US. Sound familiar anyone? Plus, who in the hell are we to say who can have a nuclear bomb and who can't? Frankly, I am much more worried about Israel and Pakistan having a nuclear bomb than I ever would be about Iran having one. Besides, none of them have the technology to attack us. The best Iran could do 10 years from now would be to attack Israel. And the way Israel is acting, they would deserve it!

Countries have nuclear bombs as a deterrent against the aggression of other countries. So why can't Iran have a nuclear bomb as a deterrent to Israel nuking them?

I just don't understand. WHO APPOINTED US OR ISRAEL GOD?

  7. Guido OBGYN Lover Says:

I agree with Freedom Watch. But I also believe the United States pushed Iran to this point. The whole world knows it.
What a sorry state of affairs. What a bunch of sorry Americans in a pathetic pointless struggle.

  8. bilbobaggins Says:

    I agree with Freedom Watch.
    Comment by Guido OBGYN Lover

So you believe that Iran poses a direct threat to the US. How is that? Do they plan on launching a nuclear strike against us in 7-10 years? Do they plan on getting on boats and coming over here to invade us? How exactly does Iran pose a threat to the US? Inquiring minds need to know.

  9. burro Says:

Why is it that the mightiest, most expensive, most sophisticated and tricked out military in the known universe isn't enough to keep the Home of the Free and the Land of the Brave from coming across like poor, helpless Nell Fenwick tied to the train tracks waiting for the evil and dastardly Ahmadinejad to do his worst?

This is the most bogus B.S. Ahmy tromps across the landscape and the U.S. quivers and quakes. It's embarrassing to act like we're as afraid of this guy as ShrubCo/NeoConCo makes us out to be.

Of course, as badly as things have gone in Iraq, I suppose we should be concerned if the Dominican Republic or Bangladesh starts looking at us kind of mean.

Oil and Israel. Oil and Israel. We are screwed because of Oil and Israel. Unbelievable. America looks coyly around, pulls out it's hanky and feigns a case of the vapors so the cavalry in the form of Blackwater/Aegis/Dynacorp can come to the rescue for a nice fat chunk of taxpayer dough.

We're screwed alright but it ain't Ahmadinejad who's doin' the screwin'.

  10. Ditch Mitch KY Says:

Hi Ho, Hi Ho, It's Off to War We Go...

Bush's front group of loonies called Freedom Watch will mark the 5th anniversary of the bogus run-up to Bush's illegal invasion & occupation of Iraq with their next, and larger goal:

The Invasion of Iran -- Bombs Away!

Anybody have any ideas about how to stop these fools?

  11. MapleStreet Says:

The juxtaposition of Hitler is rather interesting. As I remember my history, Hitler came up with a putative reason to attack one country. He told the world that this would be his only country. Then he invaded one more, again saying it was his last, etc. etc..

This kind of reminds me of what we are doing with Afghanistan, oops I mean Iraq, oops Iran will be the last one. If history teaches it anything it is that Shrub should be neutered and put on a leash before he attacks someone else.

Of course, I loved the "phony soldier" debate as I wondered how this could be used to compare the soldiers on the ground and retired generals with the glorious military career of Shrub.

    Sieg Heil !

  15. Veritas Says:

We can thank Harry Reid for our next invasion. These democrats are beginning to look even worse than the Republicans now. They've just cooked their chances with the american public in 08 with this one. Thanks, Harry - you've sold us out to the devil.

You forget, Bilbo... God talks to George.

  17. Veritas Says:

I believe Bush has a "destruction wish" for this country for that is precisely what will happen if we attack Iran. As Jackie said - the rest of the world will unite against us and this country will be curtains.

  18. Styve Says:

Such dishonesty, intellectual and otherwise, I never thought I would see!! They really do think that they create their own reality.

  19. Veritas Says:

After all, just check out The Shrub's track record with every business he owned - he tanked them all into the ground which is precisely what he's hell bent on doing to this country. If he isn't the classic case of bipolar disorder, I don't know what is! Everything they (he) touches turns to hammered shit.

  20. Veritas Says:

I'm really beginning to be totally disgusted, disenchanted, and in serious dislike of what this country has become. Time for americans to bail outta here might be nigh.

  21. Veritas Says:

Bartlebee: Having our voices heard via the blogs may be the only avenue available to us since our votes have been and will again be hacked in 08 and our wonderful Patriot Act will turn us into enemy combatants if we demostrate. They've got it all sewn up if you ask me.

  22. Veritas Says:

I agree that the dems are worse because they were the messengers of hope in the midterms and they sold the people down the river. We always knew that the Repukes were pukes but the shapeshifting Democrats have actually become worse....much worse because they pretend to care and then screw us.

I'd be embarrassed to be a Democrat today!

  23. The Republic of Stupidity Says:

They’ve got it all sewn up if you ask me.

    Comment by Veritas — September 29, 2007 @ 11:38 pm

Closer and closer to it all the time. That's why net neutrality is such a big deal, and why the corps are so determined to have their way. Remember when the DoJ **cough... cough** weighed in a month or so ago? "Net neutrality" is bad for the country... WTF??? The DoJ???

  24. Veritas Says:

I can see it now: After the Iran vote last week where a majority of dems bent over and were screwed by the Bush Cabal (and handily, I might add!) they will lose registered voters now by the droves. And then when the I's grow in number, the candidates will have to answer to the independents....and not take any vote for granted.

  25. Veritas Says:

Republic: I remember it well. The demons know that the blogosphere is the "last frontier of freedom". Once they shut this down, they will have their fascist dictatiorship complete. That's when myself and many americans move out of this country. By then, it will resemble a third world country anyway....let's give it all to the illegal aliens - now that's not a bad idea!

  26. Zooey Says:

Personally, although I'm disappointed with the Dems, I think the Republican party is tickled pink with all our grumbling. It makes them stronger because they feed on it.

I don'tknow what the answer is, but I hate to see the Repubs happy.

  27. The Republic of Stupidity Says:

I think Edwards may be this countries, and maybe the worlds, best hope.

    Comment by BARTLEBEE — September 29, 2007 @ 11:42 pm

    So, Bartles, why Edwards?

(I'm not being flip, BTW... I actually am curious...)

  28. Veritas Says:

Connect the dots and you will see the progress toward a fascist dictatorship which was concocted by PNAC well in advance of 911; in fact, many of the major players were working toward it since Bush 41. The pulled the false flag on 911 in order to enact The Patriot Act; once in place, it had to be renewed. To squelch dissidence once the people "got smart" about being duped on 911 and the bogus "official story", they knew they had to have a way to sqelch the voices calling foul play....voila: the overt illegal spying on americans to instill fear of speaking out. Many of us knew precisely what the Patriot Act was all about and knew that it was the end of our constitutinal rights and freedoms. And now we can see that it's precisely what it is. It has absolutely nothing to do with keeping us safe - it has everything to do with the tradeoff we've made (the pact with the devil) of trading our freedoms for the illusion of safety....called the Patriot Act.

  29. Veritas Says:

Who was it whose words will haunt us all till the day we die.....If one trades his freedom for the illusion of safety (through fear), he deserves neither: freedom or safety. And, of course, we now know that he also gets neither freedom or safety. It's all flushed down the toilet now and we were miserably duped.

  30. Veritas Says:

Franklin or Jefferson? Can't recall which one prognosticated the end of this democracy....and I'd have to say that he's 100% correct.

  31. Zooey Says:

    That was Franklin, Veritas. :)

  32. Veritas Says:

Bart: You can always tell when a momentus event is taking place by the feeling in your gut. The Liberman/Kyle amendment came out of thin air - in fact, didn't Webb say that he'd heard nothing about it and he sits on the Foreign Relations Committee? This amendment was "hatched" by the fascists behind closed doors and sprung on Congress by those two anti-americans Lieberman and Kyle. They should be strung up for this. As for the weasel democrats who supported it, they're finished as far as many americans are concerned. Did Hillary vote for it? It seems to me that she did. If so, this coupled with her horrendous error in judgment by not being informed and voting yes to enable the dictator will cost her the nomination and/or election. Happy to see that John Edwards had the spine to stand up to the bush-lickers though. This should elevate his numbers substantially when the people realize what's going on.

  33. Veritas Says:

Thanks Bartlebee! And "those" to whom he refers is "US"!

  34. The Republic of Stupidity Says:

Thats why he’s the only one of the field that really deserves our support.

    Comment by BARTLEBEE — September 29, 2007 @ 11:46 pm

I have to say, I found the events of this week REALLY DEPRESSING. I'm scared shitless right now. I'm terrified Bush is going start WW III any day, and I CAN'T stand most of the Dems running for Pres.

The few times I've seen Edwards talk, he seemed like a sharp guy, but it didn't really seem like he had enough "something" to get past Obama and Hillary, neither of whom I like.

(I still wonder who told Obama it was a good idea to float that "Attack Pakistan" sh*t.) Hillary? Nooooo thank you. I found that Kyl-Liarman vote sooo depressing.

Hope yer right, Bartles. In spite of what the righties say (Breck Girl, blah blah blah...), Edwards must have something on the ball, or he would never have gotten from where he started to where he is, unlike the clowns born to it (hint... starts w/ a "G", and ends w/ a BANG!).

Despite of my general demeanor here, I actually have a serious side...

  35. Veritas Says:

Hi Zooey! I just got back from a football game which is why these old eyes of mine are still focusing this late at night (here it's midnight)...Thanks for enlightening me about Jefferson, along with Bartlebee.

  36. had enough Says:

On another note... doesn't the pendulum always swing the other way? If we get the right pres in, such as Edwards and begin to throw out the weak dems for strong maybe in time we can take back our country. Let's just hope another SC justice does not need to be appointed.

  37. Veritas Says:

I'm with you Republic regarding Edwards. I'm disgusted with the paltry group of Dems (and of course Repugs). Hillary is looking more like a female version of Bush these days and Obama didn't even have the spine to vote on the Lieberman amendment.

Like you, I've all but given up on this country of ours. Clearly, the people have no representation at this point and I fear that we're sliding into the abyss - the slippery slope was passed long ago and from here on in it will be very dark and very scary.

"Unlimited authority to invade YET ANOTHER foreign country..."

    Is okay, no?

  40. Veritas Says:

Yes, Wednesday will be a day which will live in infamy I'm afraid. The people are now on their own. We've been sold down the river by, as you say, the "enemy within". I once held that description out for mostly Republicans; now I recognize that the greater enemy within is the one who pretends to be your friend - the one who coos in your ear and tells you how much they care about you and then puts the knife in your back when it counts and they think you're not looking. Yeparee.....it's the spineless, sickening democrats who should be tarred and feathered and booted out of congress on their collective asses.

  45. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

Remember, veritas. We mustn't keep looking to the Democrats and Republicans as our only choices. There's still time. Make yourself heard. Help spread the word. Give 'em the bird. Vote for a third. You can do it. We can do it. We all can do it. Strength in numbers. Give 'em a rout. Throw them all out. That's what I've always been talking about.

  46. Chuck U. Farley Says:

Can we get rid of Bush/Cheney since it appears they have outsourced America's foreign policy decision-making?

  47. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

    TRoS,

It comes from being around yourself.

  48. Veritas Says:

I know that I sound like a broken record on this but here goes my pitch again (those of my buddies who know the drill can scroll down if you want :)) but it's really looking like the only way left for people to have any voice at all, other than the blogosphere, is to become a registered independent/unaffiliated. If the numbers of unaffiliates become large enough and the candidates and parties know that they have to "win us over" and not simply assume our loyalty to our party affiliation, then perhaps the people will begin to be heard again.

I can't emphasize enough that now it's apparent that THE ONLY way people will ever regain any power in this country is to break all ties with our current political parties and, essentially, begin a new one - one which becomes a voice of the people - one which becomes a platform for change.

Okay....I've done my pitch for becoming an I for tonight. I'm bushed and the Gators lost against Auburn. I've screamed my throat out till I'm hoarse.....so I'm disgusted with the Gators and I'm disgusted with the Democrats, too!

Sweet dreams, buddies. Tomorrow will be another day and even this eternal optimist who is down right now will probably spring back with renewed faith. After all, "faith" may be all we have at this point.

  49. The Republic of Stupidity Says:

support it anyway I can, right down to joining the DNC to so I can vote for him in the primary.

    Comment by BARTLEBEE — September 30, 2007 @ 12:12 am

I'm listening. I'll take a closer look. I knida thought he'd make a decent candidate quite some time ago, but he just didn't seem to have the poll naumbers then to make a race of it. Quite frankly, the other candidates deppress me. We're in a SH*TLOAD of trouble here, and I don't see anyone saying anything that'll do us real good right now. (In general...)

I think Kuchinich is probably a decent human being, and he must be doin' sumpin right to bag that wife of his, but don't think he stand s a hace of getting elected to POTUS.

    Howzabout Edwards-Kucinich?

  50. Veritas Says:

Hey Wayne! Just scrolled up to see your post while I was writing my pitch for changing one's party affiliation. I am bound and determined to give our plug each and every day on each blog I visit.

The lesson couldn't be more acutely learned that by smarting from Wednesday final nail in the coffin of this democracy - by Democrats no less. I still am reeling from it all.

I'll keeping making the pitch for becoming an Independent/Unaffiliated. It may truly be the only way the people can regain their voice and their power.

Say hi to Jane for me!

  51. Veritas Says:

Bartlebee: After all, I'm a massage therapist and try to do the holistic thing which means turning into bed and getting my beauty sleep...hahah!

  52. Veritas Says:

Of course, you can switch your affiliation at the drop of a hat which many I's do when they hone in on someone they like in the primary...and then immediatly switch back.

  53. The Republic of Stupidity Says:

Dear Lord, I've started a chain reaction. It's probably only a matter of minutes until we reach the center of the Earth, wherein we'll find the Mole People, laboring away...

Wayner, I've tried getting away from myself, but I seem to follow me wherever I go... 'cause when I get to where I'm going, I'm already there... :-O!!!

  54. Veritas Says:

I trust John Edwards which is something I can't say for any other Dem candidate at this point. Maybe he'd consider picking up Bloomberg as his veep. I guess Al Gore's made it definite that he's not planning on throwing his hat in at all.

  55. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

    TRoS,

Just out of curiosity, why does everyone say Kucinish is somebody they like, but he has no chance of winning? Is it because the media keeps telling us so? And because they refuse to cover him as widely as they have covered Hillary and Barack and John? We all seem to agree that if the public at large were given more of a chance to see him than they have (remember, cable news shows do not draw that many viewers compared to the big 3/4), he would appeal to many more voters. So why do we continue to give up on him? Because we're told we should? Who's casting your vote here, you or the media?

  56. The Republic of Stupidity Says:

Al Gore’s made it definite that he’s not planning on throwing his hat in at all.

    Comment by Veritas — September 30, 2007 @ 12:21 am

Al Gore's been there, done that... why would he want to go thru it all again? Bush has made damned sure that almost anyone who follows in his footsteps will have a terrible time.

  57. Veritas Says:

The healing touch part of me loves Kucinich but one has to temper all of that peacenik/idealistic stuff with a modicum of reality - we're not even close to living in a Utopia and this country has become a downright ugly monster. I fear that Kucinich's broad brush of peace wouldn't cut it right now. I do like Dennis very much - he'd be great to have coffee with and chat but not to get this country out of the pickle it's gotten itself into right now.

  58. Ditch Mitch KY Says:

Yes -- The Senate vote (76-22) on Kyl-Lieberman, as the first step to War Against Iran was a total disaster and gullible Dems were sucker punched. They were so excited that the "inflammatory language" was removed that they foolishly voted to push us closer to war with Iran.

So now what do we do?

First, read Scott Ritter's excellent article, "Iraq Will Have to Wait." http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2007/09/27/4134/

Ritter says that Iraq is a total disaster and we can't do much about it, but we must not let Bush and Cheney start a war against Iran. Remember that Ritter was right in Oct. 2002 when he said that there were no WMD in Iraq. He has been right about every single aspect of Bush's Iraq Fiasco.

So read the article, send it to your friends, and then raise holy hell with everyone you can think of to tell Bush, "NO War against Iran." The Iran War train is pulling out of the station. Act fast.

  59. Veritas Says:

Republic: Yes, Al Gore's spiritual calibration has been exponentially amplied with the good work he is doing for the world. Why would he take Bush's sloppy seconds and try to undo the disastrous mess the Chimp has made. Gore's life work is on a much grander scale than this country, obviously.

  60. The Republic of Stupidity Says:

    Gravel maybe.

    Comment by BARTLEBEE — September 30, 2007 @ 12:22 am

Not sure about Gravel, but I know what you mean about Edwards. He might surprise ya if he ever gets there. He's got the same problem Ralph Reed has - they look too young to be where they are.

(Reed's got worse problems than that... MUCH worse... but everytime I see his picture, I wonder, geez, has he started shaving yet?)

I agree totally aout tha Kuch... fantastic choice for a major cabinet position. Wesley Clark for VP?

  61. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

How many takers on this bet? The new Democratic president gets sworn into office and then, and only then, learns that the actual deficit and debt are far worse than the Bush administration has been letting on, and even with repealing the Bush I-Hate-Taxes Cuts, and raising the wealthiests' taxes even more, they'll still have to raise taxes on the middle class by more than Bush cut them just to keep us from having to mortgage the Grand Canyon to keep from defaulting on our loans from China.

  62. Zooey Says:

    Comment by Wayne A. Schneider — September 30, 2007 @ 12:28 am

....and then in 2012, a Republican will be voted in as president, after a campaign run on "see, I told you the Dems would raise taxes."

  63. The Republic of Stupidity Says:

Who’s casting your vote here, you or the media?

    Comment by Wayne A. Schneider — September 30, 2007 @ 12:22 am

    'cause he's a little guy w/ a funny-soundin' last name...

I know that's ridiculous, but I'm afraid it's true too. As for getting people to ACTULLY LISTEN, holy Shi-ite... if we could get people to do that, and that alone, we wouldn't be in the mess we're in.

I think it's the same reason all this BS w/ Moveon and Rush does matter. It's for appearance's sake, but it's for more than just that.

Sadly, Kuch just doesn't look like Gary Cooper. he just doesn't look Presidential. Does this bother me? No... but will it affect FAR TOO MANY others? Yes...

  64. The Republic of Stupidity Says:

just to keep us from having to mortgage the Grand Canyon to keep from defaulting on our loans from China.

    Comment by Wayne A. Schneider — September 30, 2007 @ 12:28 am

I'm w/ ya on that one, sadly enough. "America's CEO" lost track **cough... cough** of his budget years ago. Those slimy lyin' f*ckers haven't been telling us the truth for years and years now.

I've read more than once that the secret GOOPer plan is to run up such a large debt for the Fed that it has to retract permanently, an sell off all its assets (Hint... national parks...) to meet its debts.

I can't figure out why else the monster in the WH continues to run such massive deficits, even in the midst of a "war".

  65. Jane E. Schneider Says:

    Howzabout Edwards-Kucinich?

Comment by The Republic of Stupidity — September 30, 2007 @ 12:17 am

I'd vote for that ticket. On all of the issues, I agree with Kucinich, but he's considered such a joke by everyone that he's unelectable as President.

    Hi, Veritas!

  66. Veritas Says:

Gravel has it right, thanks bartlebee. Hillary led the charge for this? That should tank her campaign when the people realize that she's Bush Lite - the Female version of a war monger.

Back to why it's critical for people to become unaffiliated at this point: We thought we had a voice during the midterms and got our Dems elected who made us many promises. As is being revealed, they have been doing nothing of the kind and, instead, have become the very hypocrites they've accused the Republicans of being.

So what do the people have left in terms of any voice at all? Right now we have zilch. But....imagine if the numbers of Unaffiliated voters became 50% or greater (New Hampshire boasts a 44% I's right now)....imagine how the balance of power could be shifted back to the people.

The dems are mid-process of selling us down the river and laughing in our faces. They lied to us to get our votes and have failed the people miserably. The Repukes are....well pukes on all fronts. The only card the people now hold is to break all party affiliation and regain our power.

And on that note....I may turn into a pumpkin if I don't turn in...my cats and my husband all want lights out! Later buddies!

  67. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

    TRoS,

How about we write letters to newspapers trying to spread the word about the second-tier candidates (and third party ones, too) who deserve more attention by the media. TV tends to follow what appears in newspapers (even though they can cover breaking news live, like car chases and celebrity arrests) usually because the print reporter has already done the leg work. So they report on what appeared in the papers. So let's get the names of the people we like to appear in the newspaper more. (I know, that's also simplistic, and a little crazy. But you know, it's so crazy, it just mght work!)

  68. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

I can’t figure out why else the monster in the WH continues to run such massive deficits, even in the midst of a “war”.

Our is the first country in the history of civilizations to actually cut taxes during time of war. This WH has got to stop listening to Grover Norquist (or,"Gopher Nose-twist" as I understand he is called.) Grover Norquist is un-American and will destroy this country if he is not stopped. Go ahead and sue me, Nose-twist! I'll gladly take your deposition under oath.

  69. The Republic of Stupidity Says:

Yeah, Baart, as much as I don't like Ahmadinejad, esp after his little talk at Columbia, or trust the Iranians in general, that little bit about declaring the Iranian Rev Guard Corps a "terrorist org" EXACTLY for that reason.

I kinda think at this point, if Edwards is gonna make a real serious run at it, he needs a certified military man on his team. We're waaayyy tooo close to WW III right now.

Anyone wanna place a bet on "military coup"?

Esp if George insists on attacking Iran?

Absolutely... what's really bizarre is the similarities between the 2, even the way they both went and scrubbed their websites when they got caught saying really stupid things.

And they both play to their untraconservative religious fundie bases every chance they get. So F-in' BIZARRE...

Yeah... back in the build up to the Great Iraqi Smackdown, I noticed that whenever Fox Noise or the WH talked about how incredibly dangerous Saddam was, there was never, ever a mention, once of the threat posed by the Mighty Iraqi Navy, or the Mighty Iraqi Air Force...

Oh... my bad... they didn't have EITHER.

I'm astonished the Neocons have the balls to even say this shit.

I've NEVER once heard Iran talk about wanting to destroy the US.

Holy creepin' Jesus, the Cons love feeling threatened, no matter how ridiculous.

Folks like to think the US will always be the most powerful country in the world, but not necessarily so. Yes, as long as we have so many nukes, we probably won't be invaded, on the mainland, but that certainly doesn't assure us permanent control of the REST of the world forever at all.

  87. Uranus Says:

This evening my friend and I opened a chat room named "Stop War With Iran." What an education that was. Except for one guy from Iran, all the other visitors wanted the war, and with all their hearts. They gave great reasons: Christians are superior to Muslims, Iranians are violent, Iran wants to wipe out Israel and is worse than Nazi Germany.

Of the many attack strategies, the one spoken about most fondly is to use ballistic missiles as earth penetrators armed with nuclear warheads, thought to yield up to five megatons. That's 335 times the yield of the bomb that destroyed Hiroshima. The U.S. wants to strike 2,000 targets.

Over a billion people east and southeast of Iran would be showered with a lethal dose of radioactive fallout; among them, India, which has nuclear weapons. If China or Russia did that to Iran, how would we respond? We'd attack, and not ask anyone's permission--and that's what will happen to us. In my more than 50 years, there was always the implicit understanding that if a nuclear country preemptively strikes a nonnuclear country, another nuclear power will defend it and counterstrike. Then, we counter-counterstrike...

Of course Bush and Cheney know this. They want it to happen. And, I assume all those people pushing for war know this and are saying, "heck yeah, I'll sacrifice my life and yours and every living thing to show Iran how tough we are."

I wrote a lot about this. I'll spare you the links. You can do something that might be meaningful. Print a copy of this article and take it to a recruiting station. Hand it to the nice man, and thank him for keeping you alive today. Tell him you support a military ouster of Bush and Cheney.

The article claims our air force out of Vandenberg destroyed the spy satellite which was to be used to target the Iran attack, and that the nuclear power supply landed in Peru. Hard to believe? Yes. The "official" AP story claimed it was a meteorite strike, and that the 200 simple natives which showed symptoms of radiation sickness were psychosomatic, having been traumatized by the grinding noise of the meteorite moving through the atmosphere. Sure.

Not long ago, Seymour Hersh said our only hope is a military coup. How will they know it's understood if we don't tell them? It's their asses, too.

  88. Jane E. Schneider Says:

Jeez, Bartlebee, you were already scaring the shite out of me, then I read your last post. Thanks! You had already taken the China/Russia scenario farther than I had dared yet think about, then had to top it.

We've got to do something to stop this, but who in our so-called "government" will listen anymore?

  89. MiMiCcs Says:

This is entertainment at it's best. A horror show in fact, kind of like watching a train wreck in slow motion.

In hindsight, I believe the political decision to do Iran was made at the same time as Iraq. You could not do one without the other, and the instability in Iraq that some say was due to incompetence of the occupation may have been intended so as to keep us in Iraq until the time was right for Iran. That time is sometime between now and the elections in 2008. Doing Iran gives a justification to stay in Iraq forever, that is obvious.

In order to do Iran, the Military Generals need to be convinced it is not an unlawful War of Aggression. There seems to be some suggestions in some news reports that they are not convinced. An attack by Iran on US forces in Iraq or in the Gulf would help convince them. So something may be arranged. Perhaps Israel will help in this regard. Remember the USS Liberty, they have had some experience attacking us, some think LBJ put them up to it to start a war with the Soviets, but the boat didn't sink so we could not blame it on Egypt. They have better weapons now, after 160 billion in aid since then, so they might do a better job this time.

The other consideration is China and Russia. They will not do anything to stop us from attacking Iran, since both are gleefully watching us self destruct and destroying the good name of Democracy (you want us to become like that?) . What they do after we do Iran is the big question. Perhaps we worked out a pact with them like Hitler did with Stalin before doing Poland, and the Soviets got half of Poland, so now we may offer China to do Taiwan w/o our intervention and Russia gets their Union back, or the Arctic oil. If not, the possibility of an escalation that could lead to WW III can not be ruled out.

The last consideration is what happens to the economy, domestic and global. Oil at 200 dollars a barrel or higher is a given. Over 40% of the world oils exports go through the Straits which Iran could close. A dollar collapse and severe recession, if not a depression could occur, might even be global.

These may be desirable consequences to those in power. Disasters are great occasions to change the status quo. Events after 9/11 showed us that.

Changes they might like to see could be a new constitution that gives more power to the Executive Branch, and let King George III be President for life, and allows them to remove some of the rights our founding father gave, all kinds of things. A big war and depression could set the stage for a Constitutional Convention. The argument being that our founding fathers could never have envisioned life in the 21st century with nuclear weapons and terrorists, so the constitution is outdated. Rove and Gonzalez might be working on the new constitution at this moment, ready to roll out in a few days like the Patriot Act was after 9/11. It might even be a global constitution that the European and North American Union will sign off on, and the rest of the world joins one by one, like it or not.

This of course presumes genious and not incompetence in government and those that advise them. GWB may be just a figurehead and serves a purpose in making us believe we are just stumbling from one stupidity to another, and not executing the master plan that leads to a New World Order.

  90. Jane E. Schneider Says:

Bartlebee, you've known me long enough to know that I'm not a "lady"! ;-)

As TRoS said before, if people like us thought of some or all of these consequences months or years ago, why don't we hear it from any of our "representatives", or anyone in the media?

  91. Uranus Says:

The destruction of a few major cities in the world with large, tactical hydrogen warheads would launch so much radioactive dust into the atmosphere, it would poison the entire biosphere. Hiroshima and Nagasaki were small bedroom communities, and the atomic bombs that destroyed them had epicenters measured in a few dozen blocks. Today's typical 20 megaton warhead has an epicenter of about 70 miles--that area blown away by the initial impact and consumed by a column of fire. Experts disagree about the largest warheads, thought to yield 50 megatons, but maybe larger.

Don't wonder what the price of a barrel of oil will be.

  101. JosephW Says:

Well, considering all the crackdowns on democracy in Myanmar this past week, does anyone think the Bushies will invade that country to bring them democracy? Also, it wouldn't take much--at least according to the neocons pressing for an attack on Iran--for Myanmar to move into a nuclear weapons program, since they're building a nuclear facility, presumably for power and research, but, again, that's what Iran claims about ITS nuclear program. (Being completely facetious here as Myanmar doesn't have enough oil to pay for an invasion--proven reserves amount to less than 50 million barrels, a little more than 2 DAYS' worth of oil used by the US. And, unless my math is off, we could clear out Myanmar's proven natural gas reserves of 283 billion cubic meters in just a few months.)
Hell, if nothing else, we SHOULD invade Myanmar just to give the military a quick morale boost. The invasion of Grenada worked wonders, after all. And, since we'd only be invading long enough to get rid of the corrupt military junta and reinstate the LEGITIMATE ELECTED government, I doubt there'd be any type of post-invasion resistance. (I don't think anyone in Myanmar, other than the military leaders, likes the military government. There would likely be a resumption of the various secessionist movements but an anti-military post-invasion government could likely buy some time and, maybe even, TALK to the various groups and create a nation that would treat everyone equally.)

Democracy means true representation. If politicians in Washington do not have the heart and mind of people who elected them, and they vote only to please small groups of financial backers then the voters should send them home.
Because if politicians ignore the people who sent them there to Washington to begin with, then people should not feel sorry for them when they lose their political seats.
It is hard to believe that US Congress is setting up Bush and Cheney for another war in Iran, while the majority of people in this country want to end the ongoing war in Iraqi(over 70% of population).
The Lieberman bill in the Senate and another similar one in the Congress that were passed with sizable majority in the Senate nd the Congress despite of majority of people disapproval show that the represetatives of people in Washington are not truly represeting the people.

  108. Veritas Says:

Hi Guys! Great stuff last night while I slept! My sentiments exactly regarding A'jad being Bush's twin - or at least his mirror image. And I didn't realize that Jewish-painbody Lieberman initiated both amendments. I also see how pathetic it is that Hillary led the brigade on selling us out with the dems vote. Interesting! What will she say now when she's put on the grill about it?? Will she say that Bush lied to her and tricked her? I don't think so. It's obvious that she's Bush Lite - the Female War Monger - now. A vote for Hillary is a vote for American Imperialism. And we know where that gets us, don't we.....one more move toward extinction.

  109. Veritas Says:

I'm with Bartlebee on this one, too - If anyone still supports these Dems who voted for the Lieberman/Kyl amendment, then they have no one to blame but themselves when this country is so overcome by these wars that it will soon look like something out of horror novels.

  110. Veritas Says:

And hasn't Bush thrown the very words in our faces regarding what they are doing making it sound like it's polar opposite? The blogs are full of comparisons between Bush and Hitler. But to have this group make comparisons between Hitler and A'jad is laughable.....when the "real hitler" is running this country. What brass balls!

  111. tarazan Says:

AhmadiNejad does not have all the power in Iran,as he was described by these groups.

Who holds the power in Iran:

1.The 'Supreme Leader' Ali Khameneie, who is the head of the state and also the 'commander in chief' of Iranian forces.

    2. The 'Guardian Council', 12 members, 6 appointed cleriks, and 6 appointed by the Majlis( Iranian Parliament). they have the power to approve or disapprove any bill or any elected member.

    3. President of Iran..elected by Iranians.
AhmadiNejad has been in power little over 2 years,he was elected by popular vote.

4.The Majlis(Parliament) which legistlate, and agrees on national and international agreements, foreign policy and treaties.
The Majlis has the power to approve, dispprove any cabinet member, has the power of 'confidence call' against the prime minister should they wish to do so,as a parliamentary system.

So Ahmadinejad is not the Hitler they are trying to make him...The Parliament (Majlis) ,or the Spiritual leader and the Guidance Council can send him home anytime they wish...he cannot declare war,or start one.

He has been in power little over 2 years. He is not Saddam who held over all power in Iraq..Iran is a different story than Iraq under Saddam and the Ba'ath Party rule. Simply AhmadiNejad does not call the shots..

  113. Badger Says:

So now what do we do?

First, read Scott Ritter’s excellent article, “Iraq Will Have to Wait.”

    From Scott Ritter's article :

The administration always heeded the justifications for aborting an attack, primarily because there was time still left on the clock, so to speak. But time is running out. Israel has drawn a red line across the calendar, indicating that if Iran has not pulled back from its nuclear ambitions by the end of 2007, military action in early spring 2008 will be inevitable.
Put opposition to the war in Iraq on the back burner and make preventing a war with Iran the No. 1 priority, at least until the national election cycle kicks in during the summer of 2008. If a war with Iran hasn’t happened by then, it probably won’t.

Scott Ritter was right about WMDs and Iraq. I'm afraid he's right again. His article is at commondreams.org

  114. Ditch Mitch KY Says:

Thanks Badger, for highlighting Scott Ritter's excellent points in his article, "Iraq Will Have to Wait." We have learned that when Ritter speaks, we must listen. Send this link to your newspapers and ask them to print it. Best luck to all of us as the Iran War Train rolls down the tracks...

#174 Veritas, I agree with you..Hillary says that she is the champion of withdrawing our troops from Iraq she said: " If Bush did not get our troops from Iraq, I will"...
That's what she has been selling herself to people , but few days ago she gave Bush authorization to start another war with Iran.

She claimed that when she gave the President 'authorization to use force' in 2002 , she did not know then what the intelligence was, although everybody with a computer can find out in few minutes that Saddam had no WMDS .
she claimed:"If I had known then, what I know now, I would not have voted to give Bush the authorization to use force'.

  118. Badger Says:

    Mistakes made by Bigfoot:

    1. Ahmadinejad is not the dictator of Iran. As many posters have pointed out, he was elected ( and as upside99 says, he'll probably lose the next election due to Iran's poor ecenomic condition) and the Mullahs are in charge and can veto anything they want.
    2. Only a small number on the left are pacifists. Most like me, think defeating the Taliban and bringing Bin Laden to justice is the right thing to do. Too bad Bush failed at this by dropping the ball at Tora Bora.
    3. The isolationist Right ignored Hitler's dangerous rise to power as well.
    4. The American Government has supported plenty of cruel dictators who achieve their goals through violent means.
    5. History didn't teach Bush how to avoid a civil war quagmire in Iraq.

  119. neoconsrscum Says:

OK, lets' send these real men out (with a bayonet clenched between their teeth) to wage war on the 30-% of the WORLD that is Islamic.

The 2008 election will be very interesting indeed. I do feel for the next president be it a Democrat or Republican, for they will inherit the biggest mess in American history.

With the erosion of civil rights in this country taking place and the american public keeping mostly silent, I am very curious to know, is what would you the American People do if and I state the word if Bush decided to cancel elections and declare himself president until the war on terror has been won. Now remember he said it will be a war that may take generations to fight. Would you rise up and declare him an enemy of the constitution and kick him out of office and arrest him, or would you sit passivly by, quivering in the corner saying "what can we do about it"?
