Today, a federal judge “invalided part of a 2001 order by President Bush allowing former presidents to review executive documents before they can be released under open records laws.” The AP reports:
U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly ruled that the presidential order eliminated the discretion of the National Archives to control the release historical records. She said the executive order allowed former presidents to delay the release of those records “presumably indefinitely.”
The ruling was made in a lawsuit filed by the American Historical Association and other organizations, which argued that Bush’s Executive Order 13,233 was an “impermissible exercise of the executive power.”
A bill that would overturn the order is pending in the Senate.
I am glad that Georgie isn't allowed to bury our presidential records.

October 1st, 2007 at 7:43 pmThat's it for Jeb. Once the criminal behavior of the Bush family is common knowledge, the dynasty is over.

October 1st, 2007 at 7:45 pmWhat does Chimpy care?
He's been beyond the rule of law since his "appointment" in 2000.
The only thing that can change the situation now is millions of people in the streets, demanding that this psychotic chimpanzee abdicate the throne.
October 1st, 2007 at 7:45 pmMeanwhile, Bush shredded the records and is actively working to remove said judge...
October 1st, 2007 at 7:47 pmAnd now we'll see who was in Cheney's energy task force.
October 1st, 2007 at 7:52 pmNow we will get to the bottom of the crime of the century!

October 1st, 2007 at 7:56 pmBut this won't allow him to rewrite history. Now he won't be able to say, "See, I wasn't the worst President in History, I rewrote it so that I was the best."
Now and forever more he will be known as, "The Worst President in History."

October 1st, 2007 at 7:56 pmI remember not so long ago, the Supreme Court no less decreed that keeping prisoners indefinitely in Gitmo without charge, trial or access to a lawyer was unconstitutional and they must begin to try prisoners or release them.
Gitmo is still there. No mass trying of the accused or mass release has since taken place.
Judges order the Bush Administration to do something, and they promptly ignore it.
October 1st, 2007 at 7:56 pmBARTLEBEE sez:
I'll believe it when I see:
a) the records actually see the light of day,
b) some sort of action taken as a result (i.e.: impeachment)
c) said action actually followed through to its conclusion (i.e.: conviction)
and
d) consequences as a result of said conclusion (i.e.: imprisonment, execution, etc.). (NO pardons or commuted sentences.)
Until I see all those things, I won't hold my breath.
October 1st, 2007 at 7:56 pmInteresting. This is the judge that let Microsoft get away with a slap on the wrist. SHe will fidn a way to screw this up too, I am sure.
October 1st, 2007 at 7:56 pmstole the “W’s†- that was a repukian made up lie. Remember everything they say and do is either a lie or a crime.

October 1st, 2007 at 8:06 pmUmm, does anyone know if the Bush regime can take this to a higher court with a more sympathetic judge? You can be sure if they can they will. If it goes to the Supreme Court, does anyone really doubt which way Kennedy would rule?
October 1st, 2007 at 8:07 pmBesides, most of the good stuff was probably in those e-mails that magically disappeared.
October 1st, 2007 at 8:09 pmBless U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly. She is one of the only judges out there without a political agenda. She really cares about the constitution.
October 1st, 2007 at 8:09 pmI promise that I will not vote for anyone who votes for any such bill giving presidents the power to withhold documents from the people.

Yeah, that's the first I'd ever head of her, too, and I was none too pleased with it. She's also the presiding judge on the FISA court and she's ruled against Bush at least a couple of times on wiretap issues.

October 1st, 2007 at 9:22 pm"impermissible" Yeap, Bush laughs at that.
October 1st, 2007 at 9:43 pmBut George doesn't have to listen to anyone especially a judge of all people. This is meaningless to him. Will this ever be over?
October 1st, 2007 at 9:59 pmI hope this is only the first of many, many times that a judge will invalidate Bush.
October 1st, 2007 at 10:03 pmNow we may get to discover why it was so imperative for Bush to get his cadre of butt-licking judges lined up. He knew that there would be time for his a$$ to be on the grill and would need to call in a few debts from The Supremes.
October 1st, 2007 at 10:16 pmHi Bartlebee: Yes, the banner is priceless. No doubt a first grade primer like My Pet Goat would be a good start for old Georgie Porgie.
October 1st, 2007 at 10:17 pmMaybe he'll end his presidential debacle in the way he began it...sitting with first graders reading while the country falls apart?
October 1st, 2007 at 10:17 pmMarie: G'evening to ya! I think Bush has already invalidated his presidency with stealing the elections and now being the most loathed executive ever by his own people. I'd say he's pretty washed up at this point.
October 1st, 2007 at 10:19 pmFrom the article:
The National Security Archive, a private group advocating public disclosure of government secrets, is awaiting the release of records that are being reviewed by former President Reagan's representatives.
As I have often pointed out on these threads, Reagan is dead. How can he object to the release of his presidential records?
Besides that, Bush is going to have to worry about this part of his EO being struck down, because he hid his records as Texas Governor in his daddy's library. His father may not be allowed to deny access to them. Oh, the crimes we could learn about in those records. And before anybody defends him, if he did nothing wrong, he's got nothing to hide. Right?

Also maybe GHWB's role in October Surprise---the deal with Iran not to release American hostages as long as Carter is president.
Also Iraqgate---the illegal transfer of $5 billion in credits to Saddam during GHWB.
Also W and dad's involvement with BCCI, the bank of terrorists and drug runners.
Also the ties to bin Laden and al Qaeda under Reagan and GHWB.
Maybe Pakistan's role in 9/11.

October 2nd, 2007 at 8:46 amI don't think the president has enough "Political Capital" to see this all the way thru. Although he may be really wanting this it may be too steep of a hill to climb at this time.

Well said.
October 2nd, 2007 at 12:13 pmI have been saying for sometime that we have to start undoing every illegal thing that Bush has done from the beginning of his Administration and finally someone is doing it. This was one of the first executives oders W issued when he gained office, overturning a law passed by the Senate setting a 12 (?)year buffer between a president leaving office and his papers becoming open historical records.

RE: above: Keith, you sure said a mouthful there! You managed to take me back down Memory Lane with your post. Bob Hope"s "Thanks For the Memories" song comes to mind Thank you for your post. We all need to revisit things of this nature as reminders of the dark periods of deceit and corruption perpetrated upon the citizens of this country by a few people elected or installed into political offices. This has been the LONGEST 8 years of any presidency, and it still isn't over. I marvel at the fact that we still have about FIFTEEN MORE MONTHS left on that man's term before he leaves. It's a term for him, but it feels like a sentence to me, doing time until 2009

Rastamon, I totally agree. It’s more of a nut house than the white house. Such poor examples these idiots are displaying for our future leaders, our children and youth, who are listening and watching. This idiot and his cohorts are running this country into the ground. This is the worst, most selfish, and the greediest administration ever! The entire lot of them! We need to have another Tea Party, only this time we toss the crooked politicians into the waters and keep the tea. Some of these politicians have been in office so long until they think they are entitled to
October 3rd, 2007 at 2:33 pmthe positions they've held for so long. There should be a term limit. When the outgoing president leaves, whether it's after four years or eight years, when he or she leaves, the rest of them should be required to vacate as well.
