The Simpsons mocks Murdoch’s WSJ acquisition.

In the opening sequence of last night’s Simpsons episode, Bart Simpson is seen writing “The Wall Street Journal Is Better Than Ever” on the chalkboard:

Murdoch once appeared on the show as himself, and the writers gave him the entrance line, “I’m Rupert Murdoch, the billionaire tyrant, and this is my skybox.”

The Simpsons actually mocked Murdoch years and years ago, in “Sideshow Bob’s Last Gleaming” (Bob hijacks a nuclear device at an airshow to get TV off the air, aired in 1995):

Bob: My foolish capering destroyed more young minds then syphilis and pinball combined. Ooh, how I loathe that box. An omnidirectional sludge pump droning and burping…

Prisoner #3 (Rupert Murdoch): Look here, that’s enough now! I own 60% of that network [attempts to strangle Sideshow Bob]!

Wiggum: All right, break it up, boys. It’s time for work detail [the prisoners file out for work].

Murdoch: [to Bob] I suppose you don’t like tabloid newspapers either!

Post 5 Bobwurst > Onasis is dead, but he held the title before he passed away. Murdoch is now the king of ugly wealthy people.

Don’t get this one. Groening isn’t Canadian, is he? He’s from Berkeley, CA.

Yeah, but if you noticed… Canada has *Harper*, Bush’s little PNAC buddy or stooge…

your choice… but he scares the Hell out of me.

unfortunately, we don’t have the Simpsons to bring the message to the bored Masses…

Um, I don’t think it would work like that. I believe Groening (and the show’s other producers) own the full rights to the show. If Murdoch fired him, I believe Groening would simply take the show elsewhere. (Also, I don’t think you can fire someone if he’s not actually employed by the Network. I believe Groening is his own boss.)

    You’re a wet blanket. (Sorry, couldn’t resist.)
By the way, I’m guessing you also don’t see the humor in Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal” since he advocated selling children as food.
It’s a little ploy called SATIRE. You take a subject that the masses likely don’t think too much about and attempt to use humor to get them to think about the reality. (Usually for satire to be most effective, the humor should be as dark and dismal as possible.)

Well, that opening got censored over KRQE in Albuquerque last night, because the opening that was used was the one where Homer goes through the entire evolutionary process and still forgets to pick the milk on the way home. Harumph!
