Goldsmith muzzled by White House on spy program.

In a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee today, former Bush administration lawyer Jack Goldsmith “said that parts of the President Bush’s controversial eavesdropping program were illegal” and that “the White House has forbidden him from saying anything about the legal analysis underpinning the program.” Goldsmith said that the White House does not want the Terrorist Surveillance Program scrutinized. “There’s no doubt the extreme secrecy not getting feedback from experts, not showing it to experts led to a lot of mistakes,” he said.

Wired has more. Christy Hardin Smith has been live-blogging.

So which politicians are they spying on?

  2. Veritas says:

This has nothing to do with national security; this has everything to do with maintenance of secrecy because Bush broke the law and should suffer the consequences.

  3. Veritas says:

bob h – All of them if they’re democrats! This may be precisely why Pelosi took impeachment off the table and why the dems have become spineless – it’s called “blackmail – Bush style”. How did this evil spawn get himself placed into a position of power?? Oops…forgot….he hacked the elections, that’s how.

Wes Clark Launches Campaign To Get Rush Dumped From Armed Forces Radio
    By Greg Sargent – October 2, 2007, 4:31PM

Retired general Wes Clark has joined the campaign against Rush “phony soldiers” Limbaugh, with a specific goal in mind: Getting Congress to dump the talk show host from Armed Forces Radio.

WesPac, Clark’s political organization, is appealing to supporters to add their names to a Clark-authored email pressing their members of Congress to get Limbaugh off the station, a course of action that some Limbaugh critics, such as Jane Hamsher, are pushing as an alternative to a Congressional measure condemning him.

“It’s time to put real pressure on Rush Limbaugh, Clark writes. “His show is broadcast on Armed Forces Radio, and this time we are going to go straight to the lifeblood of Rush’s show — Congress. Congress has the power to remove Rush Limbaugh from Armed Forces Radio, and it won’t be as easy for elected officials to ignore our call. Tax dollars are used to fund Armed Forces Radio, and that money is not intended for radio show hosts to spout insults at our soldiers.”

House Dem sources were unable to say at this early juncture whether the idea would gain traction with the Dem Congressional leadership. Seems like an interesting approach — stay tuned.

Of course the spying is illegal that’s why it was set up.
Look at the 6 years of Bush/Cheney and how big companies have been taken over. This program is not for National Security it’s for major take overs. Both in and out side the United States. Like the fake stories about voting fraud this is another plan that was put in the works to trick Americans. Right now as the sitting KKK appointees on the Supreme Court will dismantle Civil Rights, Woman’s Rights and Voting Rights by saying it’s for National Security reasons. Clarence Thomas has been given his notice of his departure after he votes on what he’s been ordered to do. Now who are truly the winners in this spy crimes wave well
it’s the Middle East who has lots of money and oil. China is second with Russian making moves up.
This Criminal Administration had their plans before they stole the first election. 0/11 just helped them out. The Republican voters are worried about minorities and who will push their religious ways well they might be in for a surprise too. When anyone is in debt you need a loan when you can’t pay the loan the item is taken. Simple isn’t it. Bush has signed a bill to let the United States have a National Debt of 10 Trillion dollars. Who will pay the bill? Dubai, Saudis, Iran and China are all willing to loan the US what ever they need. The Saudis and Iran got US money to loan back to the US. If anyone really listen to Alan Greenspan he said he has investments in other currency then US. Smart move as the dollar will keep falling and Greenspan’s money keeps going up in value. US spying is not for terrorist protection or what you say to your GrandMother it’s all about inside information to get business take overs.

Try making some friends overseas because they will be rich friends soon. Remember Canada is working on it’s coal profits and talking with selling to everyone but the United States. Our boarder friends will have a get big surplus and the US might want to think about borrowing from our Canadian neighbors.

Coming soon: In a 5-4 Supreme Court decision, the majority finds that since Congress can’t prove anything illegal happened, they are not entitled to the information that proves something illegal happened. Case DISMISSED!!!!

No. Bush is fighting our freedoms and we liberals are respectful enough to defend them.

Bush lost a long time ago.

Could you define waht is “freedom”? Our freedom includes freedom from illegal searches. How do we not respect freedom by expecting our President to respect that freedom? Could you also define what is “fighting”. Bush sends others to serve our in what he says is a fight for our freedom.
Oh never mind now I remember, it depends on what the meaning of is is.

Right Wing Loon Brandon – Call your local Junior College. I’m fairly sure they will have a class in critical thinking you can enroll in. Your post here makes just as much sense as asking someone a yes or no question “Have you stopped beating your wife”.

Seems my earlier comment was deleted. Was it because I said that Goldsmith should commit “civil disobedience” in order to tell Congress what the underlying legal arguments were for the TSP, despite being “forbidden by the WH” to say?

OK now, this is SAD. this doesn’t say much for the education our kids are getting. I think this sounds more like a junior high kid or younger. I will cut and paste this and print it out to show to all the kids so they will see how not to answer a question about world events. it sounds like the kind of answer GWB would offer. truly sad for our country that this is how the youth of today thinks and responds to serious issues.
