Limbaugh Compares Purple Heart Recipient In Vote Vets Ad To A Suicide Bomber

In a new Vote Vets ad released today, Brian McGough, an Iraq war veteran who received the Purple Heart, challenges Rush Limbaugh: “Until you have the guts to call me a ‘phony soldier‘ to my face, stop telling lies about my service.” Watch it:

In response, Limbaugh today attacked McGough, comparing him to a suicide bomber and suggesting that someone “pumped him full of these lies about what I said“:

This is such a blatant use of a valiant combat veteran, lying to him about what I said and then strapping those lies to his belt, sending him out via the media and a TV ad to walk into as many people as he can walk into.

This man will always be a hero to this country with everyone. Whoever pumped him full of these lies about what I said and embarrassed him with this ad has betrayed him, they aren’t hurting me. They are betraying this soldier.

In McGough’s case, Rush’s comments are especially tactless. McGough’s injury in Iraq “resulted from a real-life suicide bomber.” On DailyKos, McGough responds to Limbaugh:

I can assure you that I am no suicide bomber and that I can think for myself. [...]

Rush, your phony soldier comments pissed me off. The audacity of someone like you who never had the courage to stand and fight for what you believe in makes my head spin. That is what made me stand up and state my convictions in front of a camera. I wanted to point out that you are wrong. I am not a phony soldier. [...]

In the commercial I just taped, I told you unless you had the guts to say something to my face, stop telling lies about my service. Well you haven’t had the guts to say it to my face, but I am waiting and the offer is still on the table.

Evidently, according to Limbaugh, pretty much everyone lies and has ulterior motives…unless they agree with him.

UPDATE: Media Matters and Digby have more.

Digg It!

Once again, libs had to find a veteran with brain damage (read liberal victim) to carry their fight to Limbaugh.

Where is Harken, etc., to fight Limbaugh?

… so are you going to roll out your grandmothers, children or multiple amputies to hide behind next?

Rush is right – you lied to this guy, got him riled up and wheeled him into the media spotlight – you have no shame.

You mean the “phony soldiers” that took real soldiers’ bios off the Internet and misrepresented them as their own, Jake?

    Oh, and while you’re here:

You maintained in another thread that the MoveOn ad was was “false”. Demonstrate how the MoveOn ad is false. (and the fact that a majority of Dems voted to condemn the ad does not constitute proof of falseness), or admit your lie.

  9. Jason M. Hendler says:

    Spoodge Boy,

NO ONE is going to fight / debate a war veteran with brain injuries, which is EXACTLY why the libs chose this guy. Libs always have to hide behind victims to fight their battles – just once, foist someone on us who we wouldn’t hesitate to hit.

Harken, etc. are happy for this distraction, realizing that they stepped in it, and can’t back up their bullshit. Well, now you got both Rush and Fox News staring you down – whatcha boys gonna do now, march some girls scouts forward to fight for you?

The phony soldier is the one who dressed up in a flight suit and declared the mission accomplished over four years ago. The architechs of this phony war and their water-carriers are the phonies. Rush is no more than a drug addicted bigot with a microphone.

  12. chimpeach says:

Let him dig. This thing has obviously turned around and bit him on the ass, and I think he’s worried about where it’s heading.

It’s one thing to wish out loud that there weren’t so many troops in Iraq that are against Bush and that think he’s screwed them over royally. But, when you start calling those troops names, knowing in your heart of hearts that they represent a large and growing number of the military serving in Iraq, you deserve all the backlash that’s coming your way.

Keep flapping your gums, Rush. We’re just getting warmed up.

  13. OxyCon says:

Rush needs to be given another drug test.
Only a Crackhead would say the things he is saying.
Why is our Military forcing our soldiers to listen to a hyperpartisan Crackhead who is deliberately trying to divide our soldiers into “phony” soldiers and “real” soldiers?
A divided Army is a failed Army.
Congress should step in and stop Rush Limpbaugh from harming our Military by dividing it.

  18. Jason M. Hendler says:

    #17, criticalthinker,

Can’t say for sure, other than he probably tried to paraphrase, so that the context was more obvious.

As Rush stated on his show, he has made repeated statements over weeks and months, regarding several people who have defrauded both the government and the media, making false claims of their service in Iraq. The only way to explain this is to snip together these disparate statements made over a long period of time.

  19. rocks911 says:

    Just for “Rory”:

Your ilk lost all credibility when those pathetic old men Cheney and Rumsfeld said before a missle was launched that the war would last a matter of weeks or months but certainly not years, so crawl back under that rock you deluded punks inhabit.

  20. Candyce says:

Any comment from Jason, Caring Liberal or “Rory” about Rush comparing McGough to a suicide bomber, considering he was horribly wounded by a suicide bomber? Or, how about his inference that McGough is too stupid to think for himself?

Is it ok with you three that Rush mocks a soldier who was injured while carrying out his duties?

  21. gummitch says:

    Comment by Jason M. Hendler — October 2, 2007 @ 9:09 pm

Which is why I repeat myself, from the tail end of another thread:

One way or the other, Limbaugh has brought this all on himself. Among the wingnuts and dittoheads, “phony soldiers” may well refer to people like McBeth, but it’s only because Limbaugh and his ilk have been working like mad to plant that seed in their tiny brains: that all the anti-war soldiers are phonies like McBeth. The dittoheads are incapable of distinguishing Rushspeak from reality, and to them it’s all one word: antiwarsoldiersphonysoldiersmcbeth. Rush and the Right have always operated with code words, and like the Big Lie, they repeat them over and over and over, in as simple terms as possible, while assuring their audience that “you are really smart, smarter than libs, because you listen to me!”

Once they’ve established this groundwork, they can dismiss all anti-war comments from military personnel, or retired military, with the same quick code words. In this case, “phony soldiers.” And the wingnuts nod their dittoheads in agreement: “antiwarsoldiersphonysoldiersmcbeth” .

That’s why Rush’s minions are always saying the same thing: “You need to listen to Rush all the time, then you’d understand what he meant.” And they’re correct; if you listened to Rush all the time you’d have learned all the codewords and could easily interpret what he “really meant”. In this case, he “really meant” that anyone in the armed forces, or who has retired from the armed forces who doesn’t utterly and completely support all military adventures carried out by the “conservatives” is a antiwarsoldiersphonysoldiersmcbeth.

And some of those “REAL” soldiers have spoken out against the occupation of Iraq, not only after they return but while they’re still in combat. Some of those “REAL” soldiers have now left the military and are speaking out against the occupation in Iraq. You and Rush and the rest of the dittoheads are the ones constantly coming up with excuses about why it’s OK to dismiss them as “phony soldiers”.

That’s correct. The phony soldiers are internet wannabe’s who are clueless about why we are there and are willing to demean and smear those who disagree with their cartoon perspective about the reality of the situation.

  35. tarazan says:

Limbuagh’s ability to control the microphone does not make him right or entitles him to attacked soldiers who did go and fight while he chose not to when he was qualified to go to war, simply because they expressed an opinion based on what they saw ,experienced and went thru in the war they fought.
The loud voices whether pro and against war seem to be coming from people who never seen any action.
What gives Limbaugh that power or right to sit down in his studio judge and smear others in a field he never experienced ?..these people fought , while he went to play golf, smoked his cigar and made his $$ millions as a propagandist.

What are you saying? Not clear.

I seriously doubt that you are awake. You buy every reason for going to Iraq that they spew. You conveniently ignore the massive death toll.

You probably think that this “War” on terror is comparable to that of WWII where we faced TWO powerful countries and 50 million were dead by the time the smoke had cleared. You bought their scary stories about the terrorist boogeyman and act like the proverbial elephant that’s scared of a tiny mouse.

The soldiers should have never been dumped their by Bush in the first place. We could have dealt with the terrorist threat more quickly and in an intelligent manner, but no, we had to invade Iraq and spread our forces thin. How are things now in regards to security for the US? Worse, and you can’t prove otherwise.

Not in the military, or having served honorably – unlike what Rush said.

I’m glad you finally condemned Rush for his Reckless Slur!

Oh wait, you haven’t had the honesty and decency to do that yet.

As for the kids doing their homework, shouldn’t you be helping them? You wouldn’t want them to end up like yourself, deficient intellectually or something, now would you?

    Comment by Rory — October 2, 2007 @ 9:50 pm

To be perfectly clear then, you agree that Rush calling our Soldiers, Phony was an unacceptable slur?

Or course not. You can’t possibly be a decent human being, you’re not even a real mother – at least not without the two syllables that follow it naturally in your case.

  69. Jay11 says:

    Rory @ 97,

So then it stands to reason that the very soldiers that Limbaugh denigrated, the one’s he calls “phony”, are in fact legitimate. Can we all agree that it was a serious error in judgment on his part?

Hey, Rush is only human, I mean he doesn’t really believe all that self-congratulatory nonsense he spews every day, right? I’m guessing Rush Limbaugh is about the most insecure man ever to speak into a microphone. Hence the wicked drug jones.

Again, bring forth your champion who can’t claim special victim status, and put this person on Rush’s show. Better still, since Harkin is keen to run his mouth in the Senate, then put him on Rush’s show, since he has already volunteered.

I actually see a difference. Generals are supposed to be criticized if their policies and actions are questionable. They don’t have carte blanch immunity from oversight. It’s part of the job, and they are answerable to the American people.

Soldiers on the ground, who serve with honor regardless of what they think about the policies, are not fair game for political pundits who would attack them for their views. The guys who wrote the op-ed said it very clearly. We need not talk about our morale. As committed soldiers, we will see this mission through. And that’s all that matters – regardless of their view of the mission, they are all “real soldiers” who will do their duty.

Dems have given the Reps the best cover through this war, causing Hill’reh to really have to sweat an otherwise simple task of winning in 2008. Ah, yes. They are obviously pawns. Just like all of the veterans in higher office right now who are, on the whole, in support of the Democrats and see military action as a last resort. Just like the multitude of Vietnam vets who came back from that war and joined the protests. Just like the countless vets from countless wars over the centuries who’ve come back from the horrific violence of war, and wanted to then end as much war as they could. To prevent others from having to experience the horrors, commit the atrocities, be privy to the darkest side of humanity. Yeah, all those poor pawns wanting better, more peaceful lives for their friends and families.

As for your “tactic”, it is a pathetic, intellectually shallow, fear-based plow. You do not “debate”. You do not present your argument and then debate the rebuttals on their merits. You do not attempt honest discourse, and are quick to rely on ad hominems. The strawmen you build would have made the Colossus jealous at the sheer size of each, and frightened of the number present. You do not even argue. You simply attempt to scream loudest, and drown everyone else out.

Repetition and volume do not a convincing argument make.

    Get a new shtick.

Monica offered. Hatcher was molested. You are a stupid one. hendler, another goosestepper ready to give your country away to those that failed miserbly on 9/11. that’s Bush’s legacy: the massive security failures of 9/11, followed by the massive failure of katrina. failures of historical proportions, which will put the Republicans into the politacl wilderness for decades, where they belong.

The fact that Republicans spent $146 moillion last year on unwarranted, unnecessary first-class airfare doesn’t bother you, but Gore flying to his appointments does. Bush flying off and disappearing for three days after 9/11 doesn’t bother you, but Gore living in a big house does. if Gore did everything you wanted him to do, you’d just call him a lefty nutbag. We know your stupid, putrid little first-grade game, and this time it’s going to cost you the White House and both houses of Congress, in veto-proof majorities. Then the democratic president is going to use all of Bush’s fascist powers to destroy and bury the scumbag arms dealers that have run this country into the ground and led us into military defeat and embarrassment over the past 7 years. Comment by Caring Liberal — October 2, 2007 @ 10:57 pm

That is not an example of debate. That entire approach is fundamentally flawed. You cannot prove your side is right by proving that the other side is a hypocrite, or even that the other side is wrong. You still need the facts to back you up. You still need evidence that your side is right. Ever hear the old saying, “Two wrongs do not make a right?” That concept is wholly applicable in debate.

It certainly isn’t an example of bipartisanship, either. It is an example of one-downsmanship(?). Bipartisan efforts require both parties to contribute, offer input, and come to a joint conclusion. Pointing out one another’s flaws or mistakes isn’t bipartisanship in any way, shape or form.

Dems have given the Reps the best cover through this war, causing Hill’reh to really have to sweat an otherwise simple task of winning in 2008. He listens to Rush Lindbaugh’s edited version of the show when he called the soldiers “phony” and swears that it is the truth. It doesn’t matter that Media Matters has the unedited version that plainly shows that Rush was talking about soldiers (plural) who are against the war. Rush edited out the 1 minute 30 second gap between his gaff and when he started making his excuse that he was talking about one particular soldier, not soldiers (plural).

Right Wing Loon OBigFootInMouth makes a very good brownshirt.

No wonder the right wingers treat wounded soldiers, veterans and Gold Star mothers with such disrespect.

    Comment by Snowball — October 2, 2007 @ 11:12 pm

That is a pretty clever take. It’s made all the funnier by way of it being true. :)

No wonder the current Republican party (controlled by corporatists who truly ARE fascist; they want corporate-controlled States) wants to privatize the military so fervently! The fact that they don’t have any more a say in the goings-on in the military as Joe Sixpack, (or Those Damed Hippies!, or “Leeeeroy Jenkins!”-screaming Gamers, anyone who isn’t White *gasp*, or even more unforgivably, anyone who isn’t RICH…”ohhh, I’ve got a touch of the vapors!” *faint dramatically*), drives them f*cking nuts. Why, those…types…shouldn’t have such responsibility, after all. They might hurt themselves, poor, deluded masses.

Those people are Straussians, who genuinely believe in the “noble lie”. The concept of the “noble lie” is anathema to all that is the essence of the United States of America. The “noble lie” is not only not supported by the Constitution, but rather, that historic document specifically limits such concentrations of power by design.

Your observation actually does give an insight in to how some in that group think. Perhaps they have that very kind of conversation, discussing the audacity of allowing such an important, massive undertaking as our national defense to be driven by the People, rather than by the Market.

They would also find out that the reason why people in this country rate congress so low is because they are furious that Congress hasn’t done something about getting us out of Iraq. Since the Republicans are the ones blocking any move that the Democrats take to get us out of Iraq, the nations anger is mostly towards the Republicans for being obstructionists.

The GOP has left the building…

Bush’s approval rating stands at 33 percent, equal to his career low in Post-ABC polls. And just 29 percent approve of the job Congress is doing, its lowest approval rating in this poll since November 1995, when Republicans controlled both the House and Senate. It also represents a 14-point drop since Democrats took control in January.

Despite discontent with Congress this year, the public rates congressional Republicans (29 percent approve) lower than congressional Democrats (38 percent approve). When the parties are pitted directly against each other, the public broadly favors Democrats on Iraq, health care, the federal budget and the economy. Only on the issue of terrorism are Republicans at parity with Democrats.

  242. Lefty Patriot says:

    They lost the Military Vote?

    December 29, 2007 – Military Times

For the first time, more troops disapprove of the president’s han dling of the war than approve of it. Barely one-third of service members approve of the way the president is handling the war, ac cording to the 2006 Military Times Poll.

When the military was feeling most optimistic about the war — in 2004 — 83 percent of poll re spondents thought success in Iraq was likely. This year, that number has shrunk to 50 percent.

Now keep in mind, that was December 2006. I suspect the support is much lower now. Sorry, the Democrats are not going to lose the military. They and their families have come to realize what 67% of the people in this country know about Bush, Iraq and the Republican party in general.

The poll, conducted in conjunction with Le Moyne College’s Center for Peace and Global Studies, showed that 29% of the respondents, serving in various branches of the armed forces, said the U.S. should leave Iraq “immediately,” while another 22% said they should leave in the next six months. Another 21% said troops should be out between six and 12 months, while 23% said they should stay “as long as they are needed.”

Among them, 29 percent called for an immediate withdrawal and 22 percent said the force should leave within six months. According to the survey, only 23 percent say U.S. troops should stay in Iraq “as long as they are needed,” which is President Bush’s policy.

Yeah, so did the election results in Ohio, which is why 2 election officials were convicted and went to prison after the election. And that was all in 2004 when the GOP and the Dems had roughly the same number of registered voters. Now, there’s a 15% advantage for the Dems, as 2006 already showed.

And that excuses George’s massive failures how, exactly? Bin Laden didn’t attack on Clinton’s watch, knowing full well he would be stopped, and you’ll note that the terrorists trained under the watchful eyes of Republican airport owners and flight school owners, who somehow failed to let the DOJ know what was up. Yeah, blame Clinton for Republican laziness, malfeasance and treason. Nobody’s buying, except the unhinged, treasonous, troop-hating rightards. On, and Clinton’s still above 60% approval.

I suggest you Lefties quit on this subject before you make Rush look like a Saint! Must we get out the transcripts of what the Left has said about our troops? And you have the cajones to even try to suggest Rush is against the men and women of the military?

To question Rush’s patriotism and deep, sincere, respect for ALL who have served and are serving, shows an ignorance of the truth about Rush. I’ve listened to him for years and he shows more respect for the troops in ONE SHOWthan the Left EVER HAS!!

Where was McGough getting his information? If McGough bothered to listen to Rush he wouldn’t be saying the things he’s saying. McGough seems to me that he either ill-informed or another character assassin put out there by the Left.

I’ve seen many organizations and famous figures ON THE RIGHT show their appreciation and even fund raise for issues of the military. Shaun Hannity, just to name one, had numerous events to raise money for scholarships for those children who had a parent killed while serving.

When do you EVER see the Left out there SUPPORTING OUR TROOPS, TALKING ABOUT THEM POSITIVELY, ENCOURAGING THEM TO THEIR SUCCEED IN THEIR MISSION(S), etc., etc…

Democrats have done nothing but BASH the military, crirticize them, call them cold-blooded killers, compare them to some of the most ruthless killers in history, and worse yet, Democrats/the Left have provided aid, comfort, and propaganda to the enemy to make our troop’s mission even MORE difficult to achieve! Democrats have been saying the war is lost practically from day one, and worse yet, they are doing it TO SCORE POLITICAL POINTS AND TO DENY A VICTORY TO THE TROOPS AND GEORGE BUSH!

Some of you may not feel that way, but the ones who lead the Democrat Party and the Left have NO USE for the military, thus they are anxious to find a “whipping boy” on the Right to TRY to point out the RIGHT doesn’t really like the military either!

You can’t support the troops and be against what they are fighting for!

Liberals can’t win with their ideas, so they must force them on people with out them knowing it. Great post, Bigfoot!

I like for people to understand Conservatism this way:

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime!

I think that pretty much separates us from Liberals. Liberals want you to be totally dependent upon the government (them) forever. Conservatives want everyone to be successful and have a life of independence from total government control.

Kind of sounds like what our Constitution says.

You don’t know me, just as Rush doesn’t know Brian McGough, an Iraq war veteran who received the Purple Heart.

But you and Rush are always full of bloated, bullying rants.

You say you oppose me. That is a relief, having someone with your attitudes “on my side” would worry me.

When I think of our government, I think of the phrase “…of the people, by the people, and for the people.” You don’t. That says more about you and Rush and the other trolls polluting this site than anything I can think of.

You can’t support the troops and be against what they are fighting for!

That is your opinion and you are entitled to it. But, it is just your opinion.

Brian McGough doesn’t appear to agree with you. He is one of the troops and seems to know. Your opinion comes from someone who has not fought in Iraq. Neither has Rush.

Let’s see, you, the rest of the trolls, and drug addicted Rush Limbaugh, none of whom have even been to Iraq, versus Brian McGough.

    Wow, that isn’t even close.

Brian McGough wins. You lose, again.

Hmm. You and your pals didn’t seem to mind ignoring a four star generals tesitmony who knows more about what’s going on in Iraq than anyone else. I would bet that the General knows EVEN MORE than McGough.

    Calling the kettle “black” AGAIN!

Besides, McGough obviously doesn’t know what Rush said or meant by the phrase “phoney soldiers”. Obviously, neither do you.

Rush has bothered to travel to Iraq and Afganistan to see the troops and what’s going on, so I wouldn’t exactly say that he is making comments without any knowledge of what it’s really like over there.

If you read what the framers wrote, they DIDN’T envision a government that had control over our lives and a government that would act as a redistribution “center” that takes money from one person to give to another all in the name of “fairness”.

All I know is, when Democrat’s are in control, I end up bringing LESS money home (and I am in the lower middle class!). You know, the class of people Democrats SAY they are for!

If your making less, and want to make less still, volunteer to be one of the troops you say you support.

Rush can set McGough “straight.” Write Rush and urge him to have McGough on his program.

You are one of his “dittoheads,” surely he will listen to you!

Maybe that’s what true conservatives want. But Busheviks and Bush followers have no trouble with warrantless wiretapping, reading people’s e-mail, searching their homes without a warrant, etc. Speaking of government control, eh!

  389. huckupchuck says:

Rush is disingenuous and so are the Dittoheads who defend him. I can’t believe anyone with a shred of common sense would think otherwise. What is disingenuous about Rush is that he cultivates a narrative about subjects that is clear to most people, but then he hedges on that narrative with subtle escape hatches. gummitch’s post at #26 is perhaps the best summary of this tactic. With regard to the “phony soldiers” comment, Rush has created a narrative that implies a generalization that any soldier who criticizes the war some kind of “phony soldier.” The later claim that he was referring only to soldiers who “fabricate” the details of their service is an out that allows Limbaugh to deny the narrative all the while employing it. He did the same with his follow up comment regarding McGough’s service, calling him a true soldier, while at the same time insulting him as a dupe and equating him with the enemy (suicide bomber). We all know, if we are honest with ourselves, that Rush’s “phony soldiers” meme extends beyond the Jesse MacBeths to all war critics who are also war veterans like McGough, Murtha, Kerry, etc. And we can rest assured that the Dittoheads clearly know this, too. Take “rory,” for instance, who wants us to believe the Limbaugh explanation of what “phony soldiers” literally means (i.e. the Jesse MacBeths of the world) until it applies to someone like Jack Murtha. Whatever Jack Murtha is, he has certainly not fabricated his military service like Jesse MacBeth did. So even “rory” is admitting that there are at least two meanings of “phony soldiers.” And this is part of the Dittoheads’ disingenuousness about this whole affair, too. More troubling, though about this disingenuous among the Dittoheads is that they not only refuse to accept this obvious aspect of Rush’s modus operandi, but that they also defend Rush (as “rory” has done) through spurious dissembling when they’d scoff at a liberal politician or pundit attempting to do the same (i.e. Kerry’s botched “Without education, you get stuck in Iraq” joke about Bush).
