The Washington Post’s Chris Cillizza reports that Sen. Pete Domenici (R-NM) is “expected to announce tomorrow that he will retire from the Senate in 2008.” Domenici continues to be “dogged” by questions about his role in the U.S. attorney scandal and the ouster of David Iglesias.

Hooray!
October 3rd, 2007 at 4:44 pmoh, goodie! Another one!
October 3rd, 2007 at 4:49 pmI’m “happy as a clam” about his retirement.
October 3rd, 2007 at 4:49 pmGood riddance to bad rubbish.
October 3rd, 2007 at 4:49 pmThank god the Repticons are taking themselves out, considering that the Dems have decided against making any waves at all.
October 3rd, 2007 at 4:56 pmwhich is it? family or rehab?
October 3rd, 2007 at 4:57 pmwhich is it? family or rehab?
Same reason as Rove: to spend more time with his criminal defense legal team.
October 3rd, 2007 at 4:58 pmYah, wonder if his buddies over at the Justice Department tipped him off that maybe it’s time to start thinking about defense strategies rather than reelection.
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:01 pmSo far, out of the Senators whose terms end in 2008, all who have decided not to run again are Republicans.
Of course, without a re-election to motivate them to listen to their constituents, they are free to follow Bushney right over that cliff…
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:04 pmDomenici: I have family issues since a drunken foot tapping escapade amongst library shelves. I have therefore checked into a GayFixing Alcohol Rehab in the Catskills.
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:04 pmwith pension in tact. must be nice to be untouchable!
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:05 pmCan’t he still be prosecuted for what he did to Igleasia? I’m Assuming that a republican can still be prosecuted these days ,of course.
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:07 pmIsn’t it amazing how many of these creeps are “retiring”. What they are doing is getting out while they still have any shred of a reputation. They all know that there isn’t a chance in hell that they will be reelected so they might as well retire.
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:09 pmThe only way to get rid of them, is almost dead, or indicted for some crime.
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:09 pmGee more are falling in the “witch hunt” of fired prosecutors. NOW he cleans house? A little late Mr. Bush.
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:10 pmcaption:
“I’m going to name my first grandchild after you, Petey…
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:10 pmIf it’s a boy, I’ll name it Peter, of course, if it’s a girl, I’ll name it Dominatrice…”
Another “cut and run” Republican. Guess Dominici couldn’t stand the heat so he is getting out of the kitchen. The Senate will be better off without him. He’s nothing but a bush hugger. Just 474 more days of the Busholinis.
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:15 pmHey Raven…. very funny. I’m still laughing… dominatrice… HA!
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:17 pmLet’s see Rove is gone, Snow is gone, Bartlett is gone, could we even hope that Bushie (as laura calls him) would retire to his ranch? Then someone turn a microwave on around Cheney and we are on the upswing.
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:18 pmTen bucks says, the minute Bush’s term as president ends, the ranch in texas gets sold.
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:19 pmAnother Toe Tapper bites the dust.
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:22 pmHe’ll need the gas money, Krazny, it’s a long way to Paraguay….
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:23 pmToe Tapper eh? That’s classy.
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:32 pmJust investigate each Republican holding office & they’ll all retire. Skeletons in every damned closet.
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:33 pmPete Domenici and those like him are a symptom of the illness that infects the body politic. The cure is a return to the rule of law — The Constitution.
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:36 pmHey, Dave, that you? NM well rid of Domenici, but not soon enough, unfortunately.
Congressional cleaning on tap soon, DOJ as well, from the top on down. May you be among those appointed in ‘09 to take up the job, as well as any others of the 12/06 fired USAs who want the job…
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:37 pm#20 – Why would he sell the ranch there is no state tax here. He will do like his dad and pretend Texas is his primary residence to avoid state tax of Maine, or wherever he really lives. Perhaps the land in Paraguay that one of the twins took money down too.
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:40 pmAll good things must come to an end let there be more
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:52 pmof the criminal GOP to follow. What’s up with tip toe
code Senator Craig? I know the lawyers who were
illegally fired are waiting in the wings for their case to
come up.
Spend more time with the family I bet. That is code for under investigation or indictment.
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:55 pmFarewell, so long, auf wiedersehen, good-bye and don’t come back!
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:56 pmI’m worried that there’s a quid pro quo between the Dems and Repugs: If the perps of the U.S. attorney scheme “retire,” the Dems won’t pursue criminal charges. That’s been the MO before, and seems like just the sort of spinelessness the Dem “leadership” cultivates.
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:58 pmI hope New Mexico voters get smart and vote in another good progressive like Senator Bingaman.
Domenici couldn’t make a pimple on the rear end of Bingaman. It will be GOOD to see him go.
October 3rd, 2007 at 6:11 pmPlease, God, let it be true that Pete’s retiring.
But we don’t need another “progressive” like Bingaman. We need the kind of Democrat who would’ve voted AGAINST confirmation of John Roberts for Supreme Court justice. (Roberts had already shown his position that the president had the power to detain anybody, without probable cause; and Jeff says he voted to confirm, despite that , because “he’s qualified”. That’s just a “for instance”. ) No, not another Bingaman, all those years in the Senate, and what good’s he done?
Actually it’d be nice to get someone more like Russ Feingold, who’d stand up for us.
October 3rd, 2007 at 6:29 pmI don’t think there is any quid pro quo going on here. I think it’s much more simple than that. Repubs can see the writing on the wall. They’re through. They won’t wield power in congress for a generation. Their movement is through. All periods of rampant unregulated capitalism lead to economic chaos and misery for the middle classes and these periods are ALWAYS followed by extended periods of progressive, liberal policy. They can’t stop it, so they’re just quitting now. Cowards.
October 3rd, 2007 at 6:29 pmHeather Wilson, anyone?
October 3rd, 2007 at 6:34 pmHeather Wilson, anyone?
Comment by judyinnm — October 3, 2007 @ 6:34 pm
Ha hahahahahahahahahaha!!
In your shallow little dreams, she will go down the same drain as Domenici when this is all said and done.
ha hahahahahahahahah
October 3rd, 2007 at 6:36 pm“Uh, Uh, Uh, Another one bites the dust. And another ones gone. And another ones gone. Another one bites the dust.”
October 3rd, 2007 at 7:00 pm#37 Heather Wilson, anyone?
What about Valarie Plame Wilson? Didn’t she just move to New Mexico? What is the residency requirement to run for the senate from that state?
October 3rd, 2007 at 7:35 pmDon’t let the hit you where good Lord split you!!!
Now, get!! Never come back except in a box!!!
October 3rd, 2007 at 7:39 pmIn defense of Bingaman: He voted AGAINST the invasion of Iraq. Granted, a vote FOR Roberts is not a good sign, but he didn’t vote for the MoveOn.org fiasco nor for the LIEberman-Kyle ammendment, so far as I remember.
October 3rd, 2007 at 7:42 pmSenator Jeff Bingaman has consistently cast intelligent votes.
October 3rd, 2007 at 9:00 pmWhile sometimes appearing to take one side or the other, he tends to remain above the partisan fray.
He is a sensible and compassionate legislator.
As far as Valerie Wilson goes, it would be very helpful to have a savvy and stalwart figure such as she in the Senate.
I suspect that Ted Stevens is going to find a need to retire soon. They all think if they retire, maybe no one will care about all their misdeeds. Besides, all these creeps know there is no way they will ever be reelected.
October 3rd, 2007 at 9:35 pm…rats jumping off a sinking ship.
October 3rd, 2007 at 10:41 pmThis is an important fall. This criminal was allowed the arrogance of absolute power by the Republican crime family until they got sloppy. Granted, he wasn’t convicted like he should have been, but he will leave in disgrace. That’s about as good as we can hope for with the political climate we have now.
October 3rd, 2007 at 11:17 pmJoy joy happy happy joy joy. I see a Senator Udall in the future. The sun is starting to come out again all over the land. Glynda is encouraging the munchkins, come out come out wherever you are.
This could even be a two-fer if Leather, I mean Heather Wilson tries to run for the seat. She loses her congressional seat and the state joins the 21st century.
October 4th, 2007 at 1:57 amThis means we’ll be rid of one of the most senile and corrupt members of the Senate. This is great news, no matter how you slice it. It’s kind of sad, though, that Senator Domenici will no longing be walking the halls of the Senate in his jammies. That was kind of endearing, in the same way that my crazy uncle Frank is endearing.
October 4th, 2007 at 2:05 amHooray ! I hope that his Senate seat is won in 2008 by a Liberal Demcrat with courage.
October 4th, 2007 at 6:05 amTen bucks says, the minute Bush’s term as president ends, the ranch in texas gets sold.

wildthing, I think I love you…..
October 4th, 2007 at 9:45 amWith Senator Domenici set to describe how a serious disease contributed to his pending retirement, I think it will get much more difficult for folks to bash on the guy.
Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration causes, “…emotional blunting and loss of insight. Other common features are disinhibition, neglect of personal hygiene, mental rigidity, perseverative behaviors, voracious appetite and hyperorality.”
This may explain his recent odd pajama-wearing behavior. Hell, the loss of insight and mental rigidity may account for his unyielding stance that global warming is a hoax.
Either that, or he’s a right-wing lunatic. It’s debatable how much of his egregious partisanship was due to that, or the disease.
October 4th, 2007 at 12:46 pm#42 & 43 – You don’t see Bingaman in the “Yea” column for Feingold-Reid, today…
October 4th, 2007 at 4:10 pmIt’s time to announce, but it sounds like he’s going to spend the entire time congratulating himself for all his “accomplishments”. Maybe he’ll shut up by this time, next year…
