Senate scraps request for Bush’s pre-Iraq intel briefings.

AP reports:

The Senate has scrapped its bid to obtain the archive of daily intelligence briefings given to the president on Iraq prior to the 2003 invasion.

That request was among several controversial provisions dropped from an intelligence bill, leading to the measure’s unanimous Senate passage Wednesday.

The provision sought to give the Senate and House intelligence committees access to all presidential daily briefs between 1997 and 2003 that referred to Iraq — an attempt to determine whether the White House mischaracterized intelligence prior to the war. Senate Republicans objected, saying the documents had already been reviewed by an independent commission, according to a congressional official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly.

The final version of the bill also dropped a requirement that the director of national intelligence conduct an assessment of the effects of global climate change on national security.

Who thought the need for an assessment of the global climate change on National Security in the first place?

I'd like to see the independant commisions final word on their "review".

Good to see our Dems working hard for us.

  6. Menehune Says:

Anyone else starting to think our glorious Dem leaders might be complicit it the Vast Cororate Takeover CT? Either that or the Terrorist Surveillence Program has uncovered some really nasty stuff on all of them. If that many of the Dems are blackmailable and/or buyable then we really have to think about the whole new party thing. How else can the constant caving in to the President be explained? Looks like the water is rising in the swamp again...

  7. Above the Clouds Says:

What a waste of effort--who wants to read the mad ramblings of Cheney, Rove, Wolfowitz, Perle, Bremer, Rumsfeld, Feith, and gang convincing Bush that invading Iraq would be a "good thing" for America? It was such a good idea only Cheney has stuck around to "see it through." Iraq is the end of the Republican Party.

Good boys, now get a little dogie treat from big george for protecting him from that nasty thing called the law....

Will it ever end...how do you get into Congress, practice licking boots?

  15. Zimzone Says:

It's time to seriously look at third Party candidates.

I don't see any Independents jumping into recognition yet, do you?

Bloomberg / Clark was mentioned, but Clark already stated 'no'.

    What's Cleland doing? I know he's Dem, but he's a good man.

Look at the 2 party candidates. Does anyone see a 'change agent' among the bunch? Other than Kucinich, all I see is more politicians.

Nancy, Harry, you've got swamp scum on your face. We said drain it, not jump in!

  16. Veritas Says:

This is precisely why people by the droves are registering as Independent (unaffiliated party-wise). It's clear with each passing day that the Repukes are detestable, disgusting, and anti-american; it's also becoming painfully obvious that we were liked to by the likes of Pelosi et al who got into office on false promises.

I don't even like the Democratic list of candidates except for Edwards and Gravel! They're all "in on it" - which means "against the people" at this point.

Time to become independent so we, as a group, can have a voice and tell both sides of the aisle that we think they stink! If our numbers continue to grow, we will have power back to the people and out of the hands of the pimps in congress.

  17. raynman Says:

I think that it might be time to put "None of the Above" back on the voting ballots.

  18. Rebel in CA Says:

Agggh! That knife in my back just hit bone.

Thanks prunes-for-testicles Harry for betraying me.

  19. Veritas Says:

We need a People's Party now that these Dems have shown themselves to be chronically spineless and liars just like the Repukes.

It's time for the people to unite against these two political parties. With 35% unaffiliated voters at this point, it's clear that this group of disgusted, dissatisfied individuals will use the power of their collective voice.

  20. DaveE Says:

    Pathetic.

Was it always this bad? Why do I think George Mitchell or Howard Metzenbaum wouldn’t have stood for this?

There are NO real leaders any more. We just don't need Democrats to be elected, we need to vote against out this bunch of glorified bureaucrats in the process.

Not just more Democrats - better democrats ! These are tainted.

  21. Veritas Says:

Margaret: They're acting like their still a 'majority' because there's no difference between a Republican and a Democrat at this point. Both parties have sold the people down the river.

Call your Democratic leaders today to voice your disgust at their impotence and their clear derelection of duty by their oath of office.

  22. Veritas Says:

Both parties are corrupt and must go! Make a clean sweep in 08!
They're all a group of corrupt bureaucrats who have gotten absolutely nothing done for the people. Out with them all! Vamoose - Repukes and Dems alike!

  23. texaslady Says:

#16 Couldn't agree with you more ! Why not pick the ones with backbones and start a new party. Cleland would be a favorite, Jim Webb, the lone voice in the Dem party. Pelosi is padding her retirement, Reid seems to try a little but has really let me down. Are there any Republicans worth saving ? Ron Paul but can't quite call him Republican.

And why is it the party gets to pick the candidate why can't all be on the ballot and WE get to pick ? Now that's a novel idea, the taxpayer paying the salary gets to choose the employee, Wow !

  24. Veritas Says:

Repukes are small people with corrupt minds; Democrats are small people with small minds. They both stink to high heaven.

  25. Jeffreyd Says:

The Democrats aren't playing to the center and they certainly aren't playing to the left. The sad fact is that they aren't even playing. Either they can't muster any political strategy worthy of national leadership or they won't. Either way, they are a sad group to watch at the moment.

How long until the next election?

  26. Veritas Says:

Zimzone: Nancy and Harry have turned out to be slimebags, just like the rest. They've betrayed the people BIG TIME and continue to do so each day.

I can't wait for Michael Bloomberg to jump into this race. You know he will if it begins to look like there's no one out there representing the people of this country. He has the means to do so without taking one red cent from anyone - certainly no special interest groups who will then "own him" like they own Chimpy.

I just wonder whom he will choose for his running mate. This will slam the Dems to the wall and drill the Repukes into the ground.

  27. Veritas Says:

The dems deserve every criticism they are having launched their way.....and probably more.

It's a case of "the devil whom you know" and the "devil whom you don't know". We knew the Repukes were vile; but we are being duped by those whom we trusted. Never again, Democrats!

  28. texaslady Says:

Independent commission would that be like the 9/11 commission or the Walter Reed commission ? Since the Congress is soooooo busy how about a real independent commission, I volunteer.

  29. Veritas Says:

If Michael Bloomberg jumps into the race, you will see a new inspirational energy blossom like never before. This country is experiencing a new nadir unlike any low we've ever had in this democracy right now. What a joyous "high" will occur if someone who has the best interests of the people jumps into the race. The people will be dancing in the streets if he decides to run.

Then watch everyone become Independent (not that they have to to vote for an independent in 08). What we need is not the right, not the left, not the middle by an independent thinker - one who is not owned by his compadres in the Senate or by special interest groups outside. What we need is someone with backbone who is not afraid to call a spade a spade. What we need is a return to truth in this country and a rejection of the evil which Bush has permitted to germinate within our borders.

What we need is a "new slate of congressmen" and soon! I don't know where the Dems are right now - certainly not the left or even middle left.....they may be middle right/right by the sheer gutless, spinelessness so synonymous with them these days. Knuckling under to criminals, liars and crooks is not something to be proud of, dems.

The dems now deserve to be knocked out of office, too.

    Wilco @ 13,

Yes, I grew up in Cleveland, but have since moved away.

"Just another interchangeable cog in the American machine ..."

I was always proud of Metzenbaum, though. I trusted him to do the right thing.

  31. OxyCon Says:

    More Democratic cowardice and incompetance.
The Democrats have just gotten the last (*)dollar they are going to get from me until they decide to get their heads out of their @sses and get in the damned game.

    * a dollar isn't worth sh*t anymore anyway, thanks to Bush and the Repubs

  32. IALib Says:

That's funny. I thought finding out how prewar intelligence got it so wrong and what security threats we will face due to global warming were both good ideas. I must have been mistaken.

  33. bluestatedon Says:

There has never been a more pathetically impotent, incompetent, and ineffective Democratic Majority Leader in history than Harry Reid.

He is the living embodiment of the word "flaccid."

  34. texaslady Says:

Just another theme of" what good is it to go back and review what we did wrong?" Could it be you would LEARN something ! But in reality we all know the Republicans will let Bush/Cheney take the party down before kicking them out today. My party right or wrong that is the GOP motto.

  35. Ryan Neat Says:

Well I am glad to see some awakening. But I fear you all will run back to the arms of your abusers by election day. I hope I am wrong. Like any addict staying sober is a tough row to hoe. Good luck for you and the future of or country I am with you.
    Comment by Vendetta — October 3, 2007 @ 3:59 pm

Well, you are the expertise on drunks and addicts, being a product of such a household. Stop projecting your bad behavior on others though, and your life will be much happier, and you won't be so paranoid and hateful.

  36. Wayne Says:

Bush: "Good lapdogs!! Roll over again. Now sit. Speak... er change that, don't speak"

  37. texaslady Says:

#33 Actually that would fit both followers of both parties. I wouldn't be too proud to have the blood of 3800 Americans on my hands and countless Iraqis. Where is your backbone to stop your leader from killing more Americans?

  38. texaslady Says:

#41 And how could believe what any Republican candidate tells you? There is no credibility in either party....we need, no we need to demand a new party. At least it would start out clean.

Perhaps term limits would help. Definitely no more electoral voting, should be popular vote. Good grief so much to clean up, so little time or willingness. Imagine if your vote really counted and could be certified with a paper ballot, what a new idea !

  39. Bad Eye Says:

Oh the Republicans missed out on a golden opportunity. Just think what the official documents would have proven beyond doubt in showing the Clinton administration as a do-nothing group of people.

    (snark)

  40. swordsbane Says:

I think that it might be time to put “None of the Above” back on the voting ballots.

    Comment by raynman — October 3, 2007 @ 3:35 pm

WAAAAAAAAY past time. They both play the same sort of sleazy games. The reps are just better at it, so the dems look vituous by comparison. When it comes voting time, being a Republican or a Democrat is an AUTOMATIC disqualification as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah.. I know... only Reps or Dems will win. Well we all know who's fault that is.

  41. squidbilly Says:

The senators are spineless wonders. It's a wonder they do anything right.

Unfortunate, but they can raise this issue again.

Nothing like caving in to the irresponsible revisionists.

Maybe the war crimes investigators will bring out the truth, hopefully in our lifetimes.

  45. Heynow Says:

No wonder President "stupid" is allowed to f-up.

  46. wapples Says:

Welp, that's it, I'm voting for every Republican I can find on the ballot, just to throw out the degenerate cowards masquerading as Democrats.

    Teach em a damn lesson.

  47. wapples Says:

"Not all democrats deserve the blame for those democrats who caved into republicans. "

    WRONG.

They ALL deserve the blame for not beating back the Repukes, and for not beating back their coward slime pseudo-dem fellows.

Vote em out. ALL of em. Teach the Dems to be DEMS instead of degenerate lying traitor cowards.
