Do you pray for Bush?

By Faiz Shakir on Oct 5th, 2007 at 4:48 pm

Do you pray for Bush?»

Fox News asks the tough questions, and finds: “Republicans (74 percent) are twice as likely as Democrats (37 percent) to have included the president in their prayers, while just over half (52 percent) of independents have prayed for Bush.”

UPDATE:Prayforgeorgewbush.com is a non-denominational, non-partisan ministry dedicated to lifting up President George W. Bush in Prayer as he serves this country as President of the United States.”

Yes, I pray for him to be impeached and tried at the Hague.

I include Bush in my prayers nightly, just not in the manner I would imagine Fox news would like.

  14. Krazny Says:

My Prayer for Bush usually includes him and Cheney stepping down, and becoming key witness to all of the things they have done. Serving their time, and leaving the US alone.

  15. missmolly Says:

I used to pray for Bush — although generally as part of a generic prayer for all of our elected leaders to do what’s best for our country.

Now, I just pray for our country — and ask God to guide “those who are listening to Him.” I can’t believe that Bush is listening, as his actions (and those of his people) are so far off anything God stands for.

Yes, I believe in God, and yes, I believe He hasn’t given up on us yet — despite our country’s recent behavior toward the rest of the world.

“godless Communists”? Are you stuck back in the 1950s or something? That’s the wingnut insult/name calling from half a century ago. Find something new, or explain why we advocate Communism with a few details (if you meant that literally).

I’m confused about those numbers, though. Does the question ask, “If you pray at all, do you pray for Bush?” or do the numbers reflect a higher level of agnosticism among non-Repubs?

Do the Republicans get down on their knees at bedtime (after peering underneath to be sure no Liberals are hiding there) and pray, “Now I lay me down to sleep, pray that George is not a creep. If I should die before I wake, pray that no Democrats will ever be elected president”?

  39. missmolly Says:

    wait! is “christian clowns” redundant?

    Comment by LividLib — October 5, 2007 @ 5:15 pm

No — there are many of us Christians who aren’t clowns. We follow the teachings of Jesus for ourselves instead of judging everyone else. We don’t go cherry-picking through the bible looking for scripture to support our petty bigotries. We’re the ones who believe God made us stewards of this planet, and we are responsible for taking care of it (instead of trashing it because the rapture is right around the corner). We’re the ones who believe that “family values” means a great deal more than condemning gay people and castigating women who get abortions. We’re the ones who believe that the word “compassionate” is more than part of a cheap political slogan.

Please do not think we are all like Pat Robertson, James Dobson, and that ilk.

It seems political parties for the most part have fallen victim to the team mentality and will stand by their red or blue over the Red, White and Blue on just about any issue just as they’ll stand by their favorite baseball team through slumps and scandals because winning is more exciting than thinking. It’s all just a charade of supremecy that many on both sides of the political divide fall victim to. Just look at our fellow progressive’s blind faith in all things “Clinton” even though it’s well known that as Govenor of Arkansas he was complicit in many of the military operations of the Iran/Contra scandal, a fact that is made all the more real in his paternal friendship with the Bush family which was heavily involved at all levels of that still uninvestigated and ongoing global scam. And it’s glaringly obvious that for all her talk of universal healthcare Hillary is deep in the pockets of the pharmaceutical lobby - not to mention the simple fact that she has made it fairly clear that the global warmongering will continue under her leadership even if it is less brazen and more on the down-low as it was in Mr. Clinton’s years.

I am constantly amazed at how gullible people are to right-wing message-making. The Bush family is a political dynasty which dates back to the mid-1800’s. Bush was his family’s 17th legacy placement at Yale, a legacy run dating to the 1840’s. Bush’s grandfather was an influencial Senator and his great-grandfather was a behind the scenes “king-maker.”

The Clinton “dynasty” dates all the way back to 1992. There is absolutely NO evidence that it goes past Hillary since Chelsie is in investment banking and has expressed her opinion that the last thing she wants to do is run for public office.

#58 I just love it when people use “they said” or “well-known”
Pretty abstract. No one thinks Clinton was above it all, he was a politician. But when pointing a finger, read about Bush 1’s involvement in the Iran/Contra deal. And the Bin Laden connections, or Marvin Bush and World Trade Center security.

Clinton was just smart enough to let the peons eat at the trough as well as his friends. Bush removed the trough. Well, except for the contributors.

We have more people who have run out of unemployment so are not being counted than ever. And these people are working for cash so guess who ends up carrying more burden. You and everyone who has a job. So say again how great this administration has done for America.

Hillary still contends that she would not guarantee an Iraq withdrawal during her first term, and that it would depend on “forces on the ground”. Sound familiar? On the environment and taxation, I agree, she is very different. But, being an OIF/OEF veteran myself, that is my main, pet issue. I want a president who will commit to ending the war now, not later. And many repubs still favor stem cell research, Bush was walking out on a limb there, just like he is with SCHIP.

I may start believing in an external God if and when George Bush and Dick Chaney are removed from power and given their just desserts. Until then, I choose not to believe that there is a god out there that would allow such evil to exist in this world. If there is a God and s/he allows such evil to exist, it certainly is not a God I would want to worship. Until then, I am my own God. The Clintons are much better than most Republican candidates on social issues whcih is when we get to the real elections the choice is easy but for the primaries I wish people on the progressive side would think less about “star-power” and more about who is best for our country. Bill’s record on domestic issues was actually pretty good considering all the crap he had to get through with the congress at the time but he still was subservient to the military-industrial complex operating numerous offensive and defensive actions around the globe. Hillary seems to be playing lip-service to the base while making no real commitment to what she says.

You have the nerve to come here and ask What Would Jesus Do. Do you really think that Jesus would sanction invading an unarmed nation, destroying it’s infrastructure and it’s people. Do you think that Jesus would sanction millions of children without health care or enough food to eat? Do you think that Jesus would sanction using fear to try to make people do what you want them to do. If there is a God and Jesus did exist, they would be totally appalled at the Republican party and what they represent.

I agree. Primaries are for making political statements. I never voted for Clinton in a primary and I don’t plan on voting for Hillary Clinton in this primary. I must admit, though, that two things lean me in her direction a little bit: 1. She gets bashed continually in what I consider unfair ways and, 2. I think it’s a disgrace to our democracy that we’ve never had a woman as president.

Hillary still contends that she would not guarantee an Iraq withdrawal during her first term, and that it would depend on “forces on the ground”. Sound familiar? And many repubs still favor stem cell research, Bush was walking out on a limb there, just like he is with SCHIP.
    Comment by Chris L

As usual, twisting words to meet your purpose. She has said that she can’t guarantee a complete withdrawal of combat troops from Iraq, but she has said that she will immediately bring combat troops home if she is elected President. I think she is just being pragmatic and she does seem to buy into the theory that we are fighting OBL’s al Qaeda in Iraq. That disappoints me. I gave her credit for being a little more intelligent than that.

Good question. The irony is that Bush hardly ever goes to church. During the 2000 campaign, a reporter asked him what was his favorite bible verse and he couldn’t think of one. After a weekend christian retreat, a reporter asked him which parts of the bible he had read that weekend and he got angry with the reporter, accusing him of “playing gotcha.”

He told a good friend, on tape, before the 2000 election that he had “learned how to talk” in a way which would appeal to born-again christians.

I took an on-line poll the other day and it showed that my beliefs are most in line with 1) Kucinich (100%) and 2) a tie between Dodd and Richardson (95%). I have to say I was surprised by Richardson. I need to look into him a little further. And if you really want someone who will immediately get us out of Iraq, you need to look into Kuchinich.

I wouldn’t worry about Hillary. My bet is on her “popularity” is mostly name recognition. If you look at the polling in Iowa and New Hampshire, she is in a dead heat with Edwards.

  149. Veritas Says:

Thanks Bilbo. I wasn’t offended - just surprised. I’d like to think that I’ve risen above party politics and have the strenth of my convictions to vote for the “individual” whom I thought was most qualified. I find myself constantly battling my old party programming though but these dems in congress as well as some of the candidates are making it a much easier choice for me these days. It is a constant battle though to maintain a degree of open-minded tolerance and try to look past one’s old voting record, etc.

Frankly, I feel that this next election will mean either the demise or the rebirth of our democracy and we do not have the luxury of making another mistake the likes of that which we’ve made with Bush. We’ve seen how rapidly a egomaniacal executive extends power and corrupts our system in only 6 short years.

I like Bill Richardson more each day. I’m also happy to learn that John Edwards is neck in neck with Hillary because I do feel that this man has sincerity, honesty, and a desire to work within the framework of the laws and constitution of this country. My comment about Ron Paul was also sincere. The more I hear this man speak out, the more I like him. Perhaps it’s his candor and his willingness to break with his party and justifiably criticize them. I’m not really cognizant of his voting record or his personal ideologies but I do like what I see. Although I can’t imagine myself EVER aligning with the worldview of a Repuke, I’d like to think that my mind is open enough to hold my nose and vote for one if I thought that they were the most qualified. Perhaps I’m too idealistic for my own good but I do believe that what we are doing right now is not working in any way, shape or form. I also feel that the definition of pure “insanity” is to continue to repeat the same behaviors and expect a different outcome. This country has definitely reached the insanity stage long ago.

Right now I am working on deprogramming myself for my old kneejerk partisan patterns because just as I criticize the Republicans for placing party above the people or the office, I think that we, as bloggers who call ourselves truly independent, have to work to shed that old programming as well.

Thanks again, Bilbo. We really are in the same building; perhaps a different aisle on a few things but basically on the same side.

It would be nice to have a choice for the Dem nomination, but the media has made up its mind, and is busy making up our minds every night. Their relentless reporting of Hillary as “the candidate to beat” has become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Ron Paul is a libertarian. Like all libertarian’s his positions are a mixed bag. His anti-war stance is attractive. But, as a libertarian, he doesn’t believe in government regulation of capitalism and that’s a profound deal-breaker for me. When he ran as a libertarian some years back he also expressed his desire to eliminate Medicare, Social Security, the EPA, the FDA, public education and public libraries. Of course, today, he tries to gloss over the more radical elements of his libertarian philosophy, but that’s exactly where he’s coming from.

My question will be how so? (I mean, nobody will do that awful as Bush is doing, OK, I agree) But seriously, all the ruling class is corporated sponsor and owned. What kind of change are you going to expect with that background?

Maybe some nicer politics will be throw to the common population and the working class will be in better shape…but the ripping off will continue and there will be another war, another enemies to defeat, etc, etc. Clinton bombed 5 countries, I dont imply that her wife will do the same because of that, but mark my words, the next president WILL bombed another country.

  156. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

Trip: “Hillary has already said flat out that she won’t withdraw the troops. When asked whether she would have them out at the end of her first term, she refused to commit to anything.”

Not commiting doesn’t equate to saying flat out that she won’t withdraw the troops. In fact, I’m not sure where you got that she said that. What I have heard her say on the campaign trail and in debates is that she will immediately begin withdrawing troops upon taking office. Look, if you say she’s annoyingly careful, I agree. If you say she’s not a far-left liberal, I agree. But I really don’t think she’s stated “flat out that she won’t withdraw the troops.” Do you have a citation for that?

And all the time we had sanctions against Saddam’s Iraq…we were buying his oil. The oil for food program ensnared many American businessmen. If my memory serves me…we were even buying Iran’s oil during the hostage crisis.
And Bosnia had no oil, or any other resources worth fighting over.

Bush’s Iraqi oil scheme is a throwback…no country would go for that deal…even the Iraqi’s apparently.

I will agree with you and Eisenhower that we should beware of the military industrial complex. They have the real power behind the Bush throne.

  160. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

Juan: “Trip, what I notice in Ret Col. Jack, with all due respect to this man, is the same thing we are noticing in some trolls before Bush: Hillary will make it right.”

I’ve never said anything like that. What I’ve been doing is trying to argue against this notion that there is no difference between Hillary and republicans. I’ve also made it clear that I think Hillary-bashing is completely out of hand and is, in some way, a result of a 15-year smear campaign on her by the right. I’ve also said over and over that she’s not my favorite candidate.

Juan, you keep talking about how Clinton “bombed five countries.” With respect, and believe me, I hate to defend him on this, but one of those five was an attempt to kill Osama bin Laden with cruise missles, one was a cruise missle attack on what Scott Ritter said were remaining nuclear facilities in Iraq and one was fulfilling his NATO treaty obligations by attempting to prevent the genocide of Bosnian muslims. He was hardly what I would call a “warmonger.” In fact, according to Blumenthal’s “The Clinton Wars,” Clinton stayed up all night agonizing over the possibility that he would inadvertently kill building janitors when he bombed the chemical factory in Sudan at night. Clinton is not an evil man.

I agree. Clinton is a flawed man.

In my estimation, Bush is evil incarnate.

  164. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

Juan, I do agree with you on many things. A democratic president will not change the basic reality in this country that corporations have too much political power unless that president recognizes a popular movement to take some of that power away. It’s happened before. Teddy Roosevelt came to office as a very wealthy man, saw were the population was going, and ended up championing the inheritance tax. FDR was a very weathy, corporate-connected man and we all know what he ended up doing. At least with a Democrat, my opinion is there is more chance they will pay more attention to the will of the people.

  165. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

So, you asked for a citation of my opinion and there you go. And TP was nice enough to provide the initial thread for it - but they didn’t include the part that didn’t fit their agenda.

The real world is not as one dimensional as you think, Koko. The Left is just as cynical, just as hypocritical, just as two faced as the Right.

What are you afraid of? That the “common folk” will find out that they have been shafted by the “rich folks” Call it “class warfare”; I’m ready for it!

Are you a true American? I can’t tell by your previous comment. Please tell me that you are from Russia.

“Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel”. I dare you to come up with a better phrase. Is it because it is describing you?

So you are requesting that God send one of his children to hell. GET SAVED!!!!
    Comment by Daryll — October 5, 2007 @ 8:40 pm

So, you’re one of God’s chosen children. Who gave you the right to say so? Did God speak to you directly, or, through George W. He claims that God speaks to him. Do you believe that? My God does not believe in war. Does yours?

  171. foreyes Says:

How dare you equate our beloved President to Hitler. If you could just open your eyes and see what he is doing to protect our country and liberate others, you would be appreciative and feel shameful about your comment.

    Comment by Daryll — October 5, 2007 @ 8:45 pm

A Hitler lover wouldn’t have said it better!

  172. Badger Says:

Al Qaeda was produced in the aftermath of the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan. Our CIA pumped money and weapons thru Pakistan to the Mujahadeen formerly known as freedom fighters. Our goverment had no problem funding the fundamentalist Madrases in that education starved country, because they created dedicated , dare I say fanatic, young fighters to throw against the Soviets.

No, this monster was of our own creation. They think they caused the destruction of the Soviet Union. Who’d a thought they would turn their guns on us next.

Daryll Bin Laden the whole family has been in Bush pants for a very long time way before he was even a Governor of Texas. Bin Laden family were allowed to leave the States without being questioned and before air travel was resumed after 9/11.

Perhaps Middle East doesn’t want democracy have you considered that?

Name one thing Bush has done that to convince you of his rightousness and leadership abilities.

And please, do you seriously believe what you spout ?

All that stuff about caring for your fellow man isn’t in Daryll’s Bible…

  175. foreyes Says:

Also, how do you know that are President does not have the spirit of Prophecy.
    Comment by Daryll — October 5, 2007 @ 8:55 pm

Daryll, Daryll, Christians are not suposed to MURDER people in search of OIL. We’re the humble Jesus Christ people, remember? It doesn’t say so in the Bible Old Testament (full of hateful ethnic cleansing) but it rings out in the New. Don’t you know about that?

  176. Badger Says:

We never knew that these groups had secretive terrorists views.

That’s because they were spelled out in Arabic, and weren’t featured on Fox News. Seriously…anyone who read Bin Ladens statements knew what his plans were for removing America from the Middle East. Bush just didn’t take the threat seriously. He was focused on Missle Defense, and was blindsided by boxcutters.

“It’s not about caring, it is about personal accountibility. You can find decent health care for $49 a month.”

    Comment by Daryll

Says a guy with no pre-existing conditions. Wait until you wake up some morning, and find a strange lump. Will $49 bucks a month pay for your cancer treatments? Will a 49 buck policy allow you to see a physician without some beancounter’s OK? Will it pay for you to try experimental treatments, if the regular treatments don’t work?

  184. texaslady Says:

Decent healthcare for $49.00 ????? We live in a small town and it is $100+ to see a Physician Assistant. Then add the meds for another $60.00 that for a sinus infection. $49.00 where do you live?

  185. ForTruth Says:

Daryll those cheap health insurance programs are cheap for a reason. They have lots of fine print that excludes things, like cancer treatment. Moron. It’s common knowledge healthcare costs are out of control. How could a company provide such cheap coverage and not take it in the shorts?

  186. foreyes Says:

    Comment by Daryll — October 5, 2007 @ 9:17 pm

Daryll, you’re a fool. The last time I checked, health care was $70 dollar a month per person without any rights to hospitalization which means that if you fall sick, the Corp. or HMO would help you settle a $1000 per day claim from your hospital. They claim that if you want more than that, you’re crazy. Just like you Daryll!

  187. ForTruth Says:

If everyone was as pure and simple as Daryll, the world might be a better place. Daryll is too stupid to know how to be evil, or know it when he sees it.

  189. texaslady Says:

Daryll, so you believe that when soldiers are lied to and sent to die they are happy in heaven? You voted a man in that has done the most atrocious things possible not only to Americans but innocent men, women and children and you can sleep at night ?

Well, guess you have to defend yourself and Bush or if you are decent at all you would be devastated.

Have you or anyone you love enlisted to fight this war you believe in? Or do you have other priorities?
