ThinkFast: October 5, 2007

bushciacenter.jpg

The CIA’s secret overseas prison system “remains active and has held at least one al Qaeda militant” since first being revealed last year, says a U.S. official. “The official confirmed the detention as the White House” refused to say “whether the agency had resumed holding prisoners at secret sites and insisted that the United States does not torture.”

In light of the revelation yesterday of secret opinions giving the CIA approval in 2005 for harsh interrogation techniques, Senate Intel Chairman John Rockefeller (D-WV) “wrote to the acting attorney general, Peter D. Keisler, asking for copies of all opinions on interrogation since 2004.”

Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) has launched an online petition asking conservatives to “band together” and “stand with Rush Limbaugh against liberal attacks.”

Alternet reports, “The truth of the matter is that only the presence of U.S. forces allows the group called ‘al Qaeda in Iraq’ (AQI) to survive and function, and setting a timetable for the occupation to end is the best way to beat them. You won’t hear that perspective in Washington, but according to Iraqis with whom we spoke, it is the conventional wisdom in much of the country.”

“Over and over, President Bush confidently promised to ‘solve problems, not pass them on to future presidents and future generations.’ As the clock runs out on his eight-year presidency, a tall stack of troubles remain and Bush’s words ring hollow.”

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has “closed the door to negotiations with President Bush on a vetoed children’s health bill.” “We’re not going to compromise,” Reid said. “If he’s hoping for that, he better hope for something else, like getting our troops home from Iraq.”

“A record number of floods, droughts and storms around the world this year amount to a climate change ‘mega disaster’, the United Nation’s emergency relief coordinator, Sir John Holmes, has warned.” He said “dire predictions about the impact of global warming on humanity were already coming true. ”

And finally: Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) recycles jokes like it’s 1999. Yesterday, he said that “as president he would appoint Alan Greenspan to lead a review of the nation’s tax code.” “If he’s alive or dead it doesn’t matter. If he’s dead, just prop him up and put some dark glasses on him like, like ‘Weekend at Bernie’s,’” McCain joked. Funny joke…except that he’s been telling it since 1999.

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

Rush's biggest enemy is his own mouth. If he didn't continue to shoot himself in the foot, he wouldn't be limping, now would he?

Haggard did it. Foley did it, Bob Allen did it, Glenn Murphy did it, Michael Flory did it, Dont ask dont tell Craig did it.

Rush is a member of the DARVO club of hypocrites.

Notice how he howled and cried about drug addicts only to become one and then when caught out buying drugs from his maid and doctor shopping he howled about being attacked by those who point out the hypocrisy of his previous statements and accusations.

DARVO the MO of the GOP.

You have to understand that in Bush's dictionary, "solve" means "increase" or "escalate". He is going to "solve" the Iraq problem by invading Iran, for example. He will "solve" the terrorism problem by p!ssing off more of the world and creating more terrorists. And he will "solve" the national debt problem by increasing spending. You get the idea.

Look, I've said it once before, and I'm going to say it again. The Rightwingers can howl all they want to about the threat of terrorist attacks. We are at greater risk to be attacked by our fellow Americans than we are by foreign invaders. Just look at all the public shootings and kidnappings and murders in this country just in the last 14 years since we encountered the first attack on the WTC. From the children to the elderly, no one is exempt from this threat.

Bush and the war supporters want us to be very afraid (more so around election time) of a terrorist shooting up the local grocery store, but damn, I take the same risk of being shot by some pissed-off student who received a grade of "F" in one of his classes every time I step foot on the grounds of one of the two local colleges. Or risk being the victim of a robbery when I stop and get gas for the car. Or stop at night at a nearby rest area on the interstate, where less than 10 years ago a group of kids kidnapped a family of 4, drove them to a wooded area in their own van, and killed 3 of them in cold-blooded murder...FOR NO REASON.

    Jeez.

Romney, Clinton health care plans similar-experts
Fri Oct 5, 2007 8:00am EDT By Jason Szep

BOSTON, Oct 5 (Reuters) - When it comes to health care, Republican Mitt Romney loves to take swipes at Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton.

He calls Clinton's plan, which would require every American to have health insurance, "European-style socialized medicine" and derides it as inspired by "European bureaucracies."

Romney is quick to remind supporters of the U.S. senator from New York's dramatic 1993 failure to reform U.S. health care, which many Americans felt overstepped the role of first lady.

Despite all that, experts say Clinton's plan borrows heavily from one Romney signed into law when he was governor of Massachusetts, which made the liberal state the first in the United States with near-universal health insurance.

FDA drug proposal would bypass the doctor

By Daniel Costello, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer October 5, 2007
Physicians may be losing their lock on Americans' medicine cabinets.

For years, consumers have had two options at the drugstore. They could either show up with a doctor's prescription or settle for less powerful medications sold over the counter.

Now the Food and Drug Administration is considering creating a different option, a class of medicines dubbed behind-the-counter drugs. It would let consumers purchase routine medicines that could include birth control pills, cholesterol drugs and migraine medicine without a prescription -- as long as they discuss it with a pharmacist first.

Pharmacists and drug companies like the idea; doctors think it's dangerous. If approved, the drug classification could go into effect as early as next year.

I wonder if the rule will include some sort of language insulating drug companies from lawsuits by consumers made ill by the side-effects of these drugs.

I've been concerned for some time about drug companies advertising perscription drugs on TV and in magazines to the general public. All that does is increase demand and minimize the negative side effects in the mind of the consumer.

It's like, "LOOK, with this drug you get a beautiful woman, a fast car and a dog. (by the way, you could die) Call your doctor now and insist on getting a perscription for XXXXX."

Now, people won't even need to get a perscription, so there won't even be a doctor involved saying, hey, wait a minute, you don't really need this drug, and if you do take it, you could die.
