11 years of ‘fair and balanced’ news.

TVNewser reports, “Today Fox News Channel celebrates 11 years on the air. The launch on October 7, 1996 was to 17 million cable subscribers and joined two existing channels: CNN, the originator, and MSNBC, which went on the air a few months before FNC on July 15, 1996.” Befitting of its anniversary, Newshounds notes that Fox spent the week shifting “attention away from the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and the possible war with Iran to bring their viewers a round-the-clock defense of Rush Limbaugh.”

UPDATE: Fox News pundit Fred Barnes suggests that Sen. Barack Obama’s (D-IL) opposition to going to war in Iraq at a time when “the entire world believed that Saddam Hussein in Iraq had weapons of mass destruction” means Obama is not “very strong on national security.”

  1. Your Conscience says:

Fred Barnes also believes Whoopi Gholdberg is not very strong in science because she does not think the world is flat.

That Fred is so smart. Why be right or smart when you can be strong, the trait admired only by simpletons.

  2. katy says:

yea… and he doesn’t wear a flag lapael pin
    so he CAN’T be patriotic…

    wow… it’s only been 11 years?

  5. missmolly says:

Fred Barnes is either an idiot, or he thinks Americans are.

    1) Obama wasn’t the only person opposed to going to war with Iraq.

    2) “The entire world” didn’t believe Iraq had WMD, although many people did swallow that.

    3) Obama (and quite a few others) believed the weapons inspectors should be permitted to do their job. Furthermore, the fact they weren’t finding any WMD starting lending credence to the possibility to the idea that maybe they didn’t exist.

    4) Obama (and quite a few others) saw that invading Iraq and removing Saddam when there was nobody who could replace him could destabilize the country.

All of this doesn’t add up to “not very strong on national security”. It adds up more to “not going off half-cocked”. We need leadership like that.

The “entire world?” Does Fred mean that the “entire world” consists of only Bush gangsters, Cheney thugs, Blackwater Nazis, Enron criminals, Neoconical Imperialists and corporate Democrats?

Excuse me, Fred, but the vast majority of the world’s people knew that Bush and his fellowtravelers were lying in an attempt to occupy Iraq and then try to steal its oil…

Corporate imperial neocolonial aggression in the 21st century, how retro…

  11. Xisithrus says:

So when Obama thought that Saddam had no WMD means he was weak on National Security…

Seems to me going to Iraq, based on a ‘belief’, has actually weakened national security as it creates a breeding ground for extremists.

I do NOT support the war that resulted in the deaths of one million Iraqis and 3813 of our troops. There have been 4.5 million refugees created after the March 2003 invasion.

I do NOT support the destruction of our Army and Marines —as many generals have said this war and continued occupation has done.

I am opposed to increasing the tax burden of Americans by $2 Trillion.

I am opposed to giving the terrorists a tremendous recruiting tool and training ground as the 16 intelligence agencies of the USA (and every study in the world) have said has occurred.

  33. Keith says:

    December 15, 2006:

Gen. Peter J. Schoomaker, the Army’s chief of staff, issued his most dire assessment yet of the toll of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan on the nation’s main ground force. At one point, he banged his hand on a House committee-room table, saying the continuation of today’s Pentagon policies is “not right.”

….The burden on the Army’s 507,000 active-duty soldiers — who now spend more time at war than at home — is simply too great, he said. “At this pace, without recurrent access to the reserve components, through remobilization, we will break the active component,” he said, drawing murmurs around the hearing room.

Some military guy who usually had no idea what he was looking at. They were more concerned what tools I had in my tooltray than what I was working on, or why.

Nevertheless, even under contract, I followed military guidelined and did the work I was hired to do by military specifications and those aircraft that I rigged the flight controls on have served our military quite well. So you can drop your BS anytime now.

    Comment by robroy — October 8, 2007

The military did not tell me what do to, the Boeing manuals gave the time limits for repairs and maintenance IE there was little difference in the military manuals as compared to civilian ones other than the military used different ATA type codes in their manuals.

  48. Xisithrus says:

You didnt get near an acft, unless they told you to, told you what to do, told you where you could be, and inspected it. boeing was tasked to provide the manuals

    Comment by robroy

BWAHHHH. Boeing made the manuals before the military ever came to purchase them. And of course we knew what we had to do because of airframe time limits and the amount of take-offs and landings the plane had. As far as engines go the amount of hours on that engine, by the mfg was the deciding factor, not a officer on the flight line.

That’s good, you’re telling me how to spell my name. There’s an old Irish saying that you never mess with a man’s name or his hat. I bet you get your ass kicked all the time.

  189. Lefty Patriot says:

come on, robroy, give us the inside skinny in Rush’s obsession with Dominican boys. At least say something on a subject you know something about, for a change. Otherwise, everybody here is going to think you’re just a coward and a phony.

    Are you just stupid?

  192. Lefty Patriot says:

robroy, explain to me why you never learned English. Are you from Mexico? Iran? China? No American past the age of 13 could possess such horrible spelling and grammar. And certainly no officer in rthe US armed forces; that’s how we know without a doubt you’re a fake.

  193. Xisithrus says:

Stop using name calling as a canard to stop from answering the question. You, robroy, from your posts here, defend a chickenhawk. a drug addict who did not serve, simply because he carries water for your team? Are you so shallow as that?

  197. Lefty Patriot says:

robroy, you want to discuss who served? How about Cheney? Rice? Rush? Hannity? Kristol? Perle? Wolfowitz? Barnes? All chickenhawks, posers and liars, just like you.

  198. Lefty Patriot says:

robroy, I know you don’t care about spelling. That’s the sign of a lazy, slovenly mind, proving that you never were in service beyond the rank of buck private. If that, which I doubt. Your hatred of the American way and your disregard for the troops makes it clear you never served.

Drogin writes that the CIA ignored not only German but also French intelligence warnings about the informant’s credibility and allowed Bush to cite Curveball’s unconfirmed claims in his 2003 State of the Union address.

CIA Director Tenet also did nothing to prevent then-Secretary of State Colin Powell from highlighting Curveball’s now-discredited “eyewitness” account during his presentation to the U.N. Security Council

As for Rush LIMPbaugh, he’s a NAZI sympathying idiot who hates Americans, but claims to love his country. He also is a COWARD in every since of the word. He avoided going to Viet Nam because like his two idols, Bush and Cheney, he had better things to do like use drugs. And as for Fred “Azz Kisser” Barnes, he’s a joke who has no intregrity at all. The sad part about it is that he really thinks he’s right about Obama. The problem with Chicken Hawks like him, it they didn’t fight when they were young enough.

I’ll bet that Fred has never even been in a fight, whether at grade school or anywhere else. It’s easy to hold someones coat while they fight and you cheer. This fool would piss his pants if he got blood on his shoes or cloths. So Fred you closeted Coward, come out, come out and stop lying about Obama. At least he stood up for something he believed in rather than follow the crowd who yelled the loudest.

Apparently the administration didn’t truly believe Iraq had WMDs, either, yet they were selling this story to the public. Had they truly believed it, Rumsfeld in 2006 wouldn’t have revised his statement in 2003 that “we” knew where the WMD stockpiles where.

As you know, he changed his tune by saying we knew where the suspected sites where. Take it for what it’s worth; if indeed they were suspected sites in 2003, then we truly could not prove that the WMDs were actually there.

I knew we were in trouble with Bush when he announced that he wanted to scrap the nuclear arms treaties that had kept the peace for decades. I’m sure if Alberto had been around at that time, he would have labeled them “quaint.”

  231. willyloman says:

Talk about revisionist history and “spinning” a story! This is shameful. I suggest we et up a boycott for anyone advertising on the show Barnes made that comment as well as on Rush’s show for the comment about “phony” soldiers.

We have to show these networks that they can’t just lie through their teeth with no accountability worrys. If we were to put together a list of their advertisers and then start to circulate the boycott through the liberal blog-o-sphere, I think we could generate enough results to have an effect on them

check out http://willyloman.wordpress.com/ “A Line in the Sand”, a new article by yours truely.

I will also put up later, a reccomendation for the boycott plan. We have to take a stand on this shit!

  232. Bad Eye says:

Wow, the Fox haters are out in full force today. You criticize Fox, but never criticize Keith Olbermann.

Some of the dumbest ad hominem attacks ever posted can be found in this thread.

    Comment by JSchmoAZ — October 8, 2007 @ 8:59 am

Gee, I don’t see Keith’s name mentioned anywhere in the headline of this thread.

Besides, I imagine the format of his show is not to bring any opposing viewpoints on. Don’t like his show? Then don’t watch it. As well, MSNBC offers “balance” by having Tucker and Scarborough (sp?) on the air.

Then again, maybe we do need an answer to O’Reilly, who brings an opposing viewpoint on and then shouts them down by telling them how wrong they are, and then cuts their mike when he doesn’t want to hear it anymore.

  233. incunabulum says:

I don’t really think what Barnes is saying is newsworthy. It’s not surprising that a conservative would take that stance. In the cons’ view, the evidence at the time pointed to a threat and anyone that would have refused to authorize military action in face of that threat is a pussy.

No surprise or outrage on my part – they’ve pretty much always said that. And in doing so today bolstered the position of almost all the other democratic candidates.

  234. bilbobaggins says:

Wow, way to turn a thread over to a troll. I counted 134 out of 200 posts by or about Jake’s latest incarnation as robroy. I gave up counting at 200. Why do you guys do that? Why did you even respond to him after the 10th post?

  235. bilbobaggins says:

It is beyond me how any adult with an IQ above room temperature can think that Faux Noise is “fair and balanced”. Their news reporting is completely from a point of view of the Right. And if any Democrat is stupid enough to go on any of the talking head shows, they get shouted down, belittled, or their mic’s turned off if they are making too good of a point.

Also, I have seen plenty of Republicans on Countdown. The are not the Right Wing Loon Republicans, but they are republicans.

I also love how these loons say that Countdown has poor ratings. Apparently in the last month or so Countdown has caught up to O’Lielly and even bested him. And for the core audience of 24-54, he consistently beats O’Lielly.

You want to compare dealing with a news organization to dealing with foreign governments? What a laugh.

  238. Bad Eye says:

And also, how confident can we be, that if liberals are unwilling (or unable) to face conservatives; that they have the ability to address foreign governments with even more divergent views?

    Comment by CaptainMantastic — October 8, 2007 @ 10:51 am

Well, hell, I’d say Saddam had even more divergent views than Fox News, wouldn’t you? So all we gotta do is invade those countries and kick the leaders out. It worked so well in Iraq, you know.

  239. David B says:

    Captain,
Did you happen to read the crap you just posted in #415. My uneducated neocon. Leading the country doesn’t mean do whatever you want and tell everyone to eat shit. That is not a leader its a tyrannical dictator. And what of your liberal media sponsored pep rallies? I believe its been only been bush, cheney, and the conservative ilk that will only speak at prescreened audiences and on faux news for nazis.

Believe me, we are ready to lead the country. I doubt you will ever be ready to follow.

Any American who casts a vote for the Republican nominee because of, or based in part on, the Democratic nominee’s reluctance to debate on Fox is an ignorant fool. Next you’ll be telling us that a governor has more foreign policy experience than a senator.

I’ll bet Fox News has lowered the national IQ by at least ten points.

  243. Bad Eye says:

If democrats are ready to lead this country, prove it by exposing them to real scrutiny, not liberal media sponsored pep rallies.

Your democrats are so much smarter, that shouldn’t be a problem, right?

    Your reluctance exposes your insecurity.

    Comment by CaptainMantastic — October 8, 2007 @ 11:47 am

You mean like Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld appearing on Larry King live in taped interviews so that they do not have to face the public by taking their phone calls.

If the Americans who watch Fox News were truly interested in getting different viewpoints, and interested in truly following the Democratic candidates, then they’d switch channels every once in awhile and check all the sources of news, not just one.

  244. Bad Eye says:

    Comment by CaptainMantastic — October 8, 2007 @ 11:53 am

Oh, the Democrats have ideas, just none that you, nor many Republicans, happen to like. And since you don’t like them, or don’t agree with them, in your twisted logic that translates into them not having any ideas at all.

Just like the recent announcement by the British government that they are withdrawing troops, the American government trashes anyone that has a policy that they don’t agree with. I do believe it wasn’t that long ago that the administration was praising the work of the British troops. Now that they want to withdraw, which is in direct opposition to the viewpoint of the Bush gang, the British troops are labeled a failure.

The Repubs in the 109th Congress failed to pass 11 spending bills, which they sent on to the current Congress. Why? Are you going to blame obstructionism on the part of the Dems? I think I do recall that the Repubs threw that term around a few times to explain why they couldn’t get anything done.

What did the 109th Congress get done other than being a rubber stamp for Bush?

One thing this Congress has done is to provide much needed oversight of the Bush administration…you know, the one the last Congress refused to investigate (despite Republican members stating publicly that Bush had broken the law and then didn’t do a damned thing about it), and the one who has blocked investigations and declared itself above all laws and all oversight and has claimed Executive Privilege so many times it makes your head spin.

  246. Bad Eye says:

Just a reminder, the American government didn’t ‘trash’ Britain. TP buried the source – an unnamed senior White House foreign policy official.

If progressives want people to start taking them seriously, they won’t rely on unnamed sources to convince us of their partisan views.

    Comment by CaptainMantastic — October 8, 2007 @ 3:28 pm

Given this administration’s track record on trashing the U.S. Attorneys it fired, after giving them glowing reviews, I’d say this story has quite a bit of merit.
