He plead guilty, the judge has said his plea stands, the only one not clear about this is Mr. Craig himself. I expect better from a U.S. Senator, his indecisiveness is not very encouraging and his behavior regarding this issue is puzzling.

Oops! The "republicans are a moral party" theme just took another big hit (from Crooks and Liars):

Another Republican elected official– a pal of David Diapers Vitter no less– caught toe-tappin’ in the boys room! And he wants wanted to be a state senator too! Yesterday’s Times-Picayune painted another dismal picture of another Republican pervert who trawls from public restroom to public restroom looking for… love? Well, looking for something. Joey DiFatta is the chairman of St. Bernard Parish Council and a prominent Republican leader (until 2004 on the GOP state party Executive Committee). He just withdrew from his state senate race, after his arrests for lewd behavior in a public restroom were made public. Read more…

From the Times-Picayune article it appears DiFatta may have been Larry “Super Tuber” Craig’s mentor:

The report said DiFatta slid his foot into the deputy’s stall and tapped the deputy’s foot. In the report, Conley noted that such activity is common among men to indicate a willingness to participate in sex.

The deputy inside the stall, Detective Wayne Couvillion, responded by tapping his foot, and DiFatta reached under the partition and began to rub the deputy’s leg, the report states.

The detective asked DiFatta, “What do you want?” according to the report, and he replied, “I want to play with you.”

Sounds like the new republican theme is “I want to play with you.”

OJ Simpson and Michael Jackson are also members of a Hall of Fame. Oh and Phil Specter too.

Comment by Shayne — October 7, 2007 @ 9:38 pm

Well the difference between Craig and the others is that Simpson, Jackson and Specter (to the best of my memory, anyway) were inducted in their Halls of Fame before being charged with any sort of criminal activity (and, of course, not one of them pled "Guilty" to the crimes they were accused of).
Michael's case may be a bit more spotty as there were a lot of rumors and speculation for years prior to his 1997 induction in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (as part of the Jackson Five) and his solo induction in 2001, but he wasn't formally charged with anything until 2003.
Spector was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (as a non-performer) in 1989, and Simpson was inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985.

And in an aside regarding Maple Street's comment (at #2), a Hall of Fame is generally an honor granted by a body with conditions of membership set by that body. For instance, with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the only requirement is that one is only eligible 25 years after his/her/their first recording is released (presumably this refers to a "major label" recording rather than an independent release, something which will probably be of more concern in about 10 years or so--acts like Collective Soul, Hootie & the Blowfish and John Mayer all had debut releases on minor/independent labels and picked up by the majors within a year or two). At the moment, I'm not certain whether the 25 years rule applies to the non-performer nominees (producers, songwriters, etc) but it would seem likely. As for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the only requirement is that a player must be retired for 5 years (a coach simply must be retired) before eligible for nomination. (The Baseball Hall of Fame has a similar 5 year rule for players but also prohibits anyone banned for life from baseball--such as "Shoeless" Joe Jackson and Pete Rose--from being inducted into the Hall. I don't think Rose was eligible for the Hall when the betting scandal came to light and while the scandal remained unsettled, no one would vote for him. Once he accepted the lifetime ban in exchange for no investigation, he removed himself from Hall eligibility.)
But, as for State Halls of Fame, I don't believe a person must be dead before nomination and/or induction. I do think this was a serious case of bad timing for Idaho, regardless of his level of service to/for the state. (If Craig has any sense of decency, he'd remove his name from any consideration for the Hall while his name is under such a cloud. Innocent or not, his induction into the Hall of Fame at this point is more likely to cause embarassment for the State of Idaho.)
But, I'm from Alabama where too many people (especially politicians) get things named for them while they're still alive. (Here in Montgomery, there was a fair level of disgust when the State designated part of Interstate 85 within the city limits as "Martin Luther King, Jr., Highway"--in the mid 1980s, years after King's death. Yet, the City itself couldn't wait to rename part of a street after Congressman Bill Dickinson just months after he retired from Congress. The City also fell all over itself to name a new street after former mayor, Emory Folmar--again, just months after he left office. Not coincidentally, both Dickinson and Folmar just happen to be Republicans.)

Maybe Idaho has been far more tolerant of diversity throughout its history (or at least until very recently, with ONE glaring exception). After all, didn't the scenery in Brokeback Mountain look just like parts of Idaho? Perhaps Craig is merely carrying on an older and more time-tested tradition in that state, and the enlightened citizens of that state have finally recognized this fact.

For a longer-range historical perspective, read and enjoy:

They could have it as a bathroom stall. That would be fun for the kiddies, have the floor have colored lites for tappping the feet, cracks to peek thru, under the stall wall pass the hot potato fun, the whole family could get involved.

#5 Probus and #48 Briseadh na Faire

As I remember it, a few days after the news was revealed, one of the Repub leaders of Congress got on the news and made a statement that Craig was resigning and this showed that Repubs were moral while the Dems didn't do anything about their immorals.

Now that Craig is staying in office and being inducted into the Hall of Fame, is there any chance that we could get that congressman back on the news to correct himself ?

We should have started complaining when Republicans started suggesting that only they had family values. It's the same as when they use the term "good Christian" implying you have to be a Christian to be good.

This will be a permanent reminder of what happens when people vote for a "Family Values" candidate.

Every Republican who campaigns upon a "Family Values" platform should be countered with an ad that prominently features this Hall of Flamer.

----
‘It’s a sad day to be a Republican.’”
----

Why, because the truth about you hypocrites is coming out? Larry Craig is now more famous than Idaho could possibly imagine. Sure, put him in your Hall of Fame, you know, under the Nasty, Bad, Naughty Boy category.

I say Larry Craig should not be treated the same as just your average citizen (or a George Michael) trolling for sex in a public bathroom.

Politicians like Larry Craig are different because part of their platform is "you must vote for me because I am not in favor of the wrong type of sex and my evil, satanic opponent is". Then when they get in power, they enforce laws preventing homosexuals from having civil rights. This also goes for Haggard, Vitter, Foley, Rove, etc.

Barney Frank does not campaign saying that his opponent is going against the will of God by having the wrong type of sex. Barney Frank does not try to take away anyone's civil rights.

Conservatives love to talk about how much freedom the US has, but if homosexuals must be closeted and must not have equal rights---then the US does not have as much freedom as some other countries. These conservatives have similarities to Egypt, Iran, Taliban, bin Laden, etc.

In January 1999, Craig was on tv calling Bill Clinton "a nasty, bad, naughty, boy"---leaving Chris Matthews with a funny dumbfounded look.
