Polar oil. Now just think for a moment. The earth turns on its axis. What would happen if we pump all that oil out and the bearings run dry?

# 61 nails it.

Global warming is good for Big Oil. Burn more oil, warm the globe up some more, more oil becomes accessible, more oil to burn. Oh, and yes, the world population gets reduced (floods, storms, disease, food shortages) so that the oil thats left lasts longer, and is burned at a lower rate, leading to global cooling.

<em>It’s possible, it’s very scary as hell, and only an idiot would ignore this risk.
It’s also possible that we are going to be hit by an asteroid. What are you doing to address that risk?
Comment by CaptainMantastic — October 8, 2007 @ 5:13 pm
</em>

Why, I would leave the stopping of the Asteroid to you and your super Mantastic powers, CaptainMantastic!

More realistically, I would recommend increasing the funding for worldwide sky-watching programs designed to detect, years in advance, the orbits of asteroids which could present a danger to the Earth.

Humanity can do both things at the same time, you know. Reduce global warming _and_ keep an eye on the skies. You don't buy fire insurance _instead_ of getting medical or car insurance; you try to cover all possible risks.

To prevent this thread from from being hijacked by CaptainManeater, I am going to repeat an on-topic theory from my post at 5:o2 pm (# 89):

<strong>"What Fox News reporter Jonathan Hunt laid out for us in “Race for the Artic” is the battle plan for the Republican agenda if the electorate votes in another Republican president and Republican Congressional majority."</strong>

<em>This is whats wrong with enviromentalist. Brainwashed to believe this. The destruction of humans makes the world a better place? The enviroment is your God, and humans are your Satan. Sad.

The world is not doomed. Only humankind, which is good, <strong>in the global POV for the Planet</strong>.

If there were no humans left in the would, the destruction of plant and animals species would slow down considerably, which would be a good thing FOR THE PLANETARY ECOSYSTEM AS A WHOLE.

Do you agree or disagree?

What Fox News reporter Jonathan Hunt laid out for us in "Race for the Artic" is the battle plan for the Republican agenda if the electorate votes in another Republican president and Republican Congressional majority.

If you are a progressive and you live in a district with a Republican or a Blue Dog (the Blue Dogs ALWAYS grumble about the Republicans and then vote with them) representative or senator, and if you don't spend 2008 doing everything you can to elect a progressive to replace him/her, then <strong>you should just go out and hang yourself and get it over with!</strong>

If the icecap in Greenland melts enough that it slides into the ocean, the ocean level will suddenly rise 20 feet all over the world. It's possible, it's very scary as hell, and only an idiot would ignore this risk.

But hey, free oil in the Arctic for the survivors!

not that fox cares about being factually correct, but that would be sea ice, not the ice cap. the ice caps are in greenland and antarctica, under which there is not oil. the oil would be under the sea ice.

Tragically, far too many people seem convinced that once matters deteriorate sufficiently, a "magic bullet" will suddenly be rolled out, and all will be well. For those who believe this, there is little, if any perceived need to consider any inconvenient solutions. The 'mercun way of life, as Chimpy so ineloquently stated, is not subject to negotiation.

Even the most horrific potential scenario must seem of little consequence to the ruling "elite", since wherever chaos and confusion might surface, new economic opportunities emerge for those who are prepared to take advantage of such a situation, in addition to newly opened avenues for seizing additional political power. Participation in bringing about such an event can greatly increase the odds of successfuly exploiting such an event for the maximum benefit of the perpetrator.

Despite progressive efforts to shut down debate, the evidence for our need to implement policy to begin tinkering with the environment, is far from conclusive.

Conserving energy isn't "tinkering" with the environment. I don't think Al Gore is looking to build a weather machine.

I should also point out that the evidence for the existance of a god or gods is also far from conclusive, yet conservatives have no issue beleiving in their evidence-less religions.
