Petraeus adviser: Petraeus’ testimony ‘potentially misleading.’»

In his column yesterday, New York Times Public Editor Clark Hoyt examined “the confusing world of statistics from Iraq.” As TPM’s Greg Sargent notes today, Hoyt quotes one of Gen. David Petraeus’ own advisers, Stephen Biddle, saying that the Petraeus’ September testimony to Congress was “potentially misleading” because it emphasized “isolated points” rather than “broad trends”:

Biddle was an adviser to Petraeus last spring but believes the general’s testimony was “potentially misleading” because it didn’t discuss all the reasons why the numbers might have improved.

He said the best way to analyze statistics from Iraq is to gather all the numbers from all sources and look for broad trends instead of picking isolated points, as Petraeus did.

    You mean Betrayus cherry-picked statistics?

    <Gasp!>

All the trolls who insist on bleating on about how the Petraeus-Betrayus MoveOn.org ad was false, unpatriotic, and treasonous REALLY need to STFU now.

this is treason, and should be addressed as such. it is the only way to bring our soldiers home, and to end this imperial presidency.

  18. Jackie Says:

General Petraeus followed the orders of his Liar-in-Chief as any good soldier would do. Yes lying under oath is part of following orders too. Remember Rummy and the Generals lied under oath about how they ordered the murder of Pat Tillman. Soldiers follow orders and that is being done now. Gates the new face of a liar just like the other Leader Rummy.
This is smoke and mirrors as planned, while if you bother to read the overseas news you’d see that to be true.

What I don’t understand is why Congress allows this to happen. They can compel him to testify under oath, but they allowed him to testify without taking the oath.

Come to think of it, have any of Bush’s sycophants ever testified under oath? I can’t remember any. That should tell the public something, shouldn’t it?

Eh. I’m not convinced of that. I’ve gotten the impression over the years that no one gets into the general staff, much less ends up with a shoulder full of stars without sacrificing everything for their own political gain. It’s possible this wasn’t true for people like Eisenhower, Patton and their contemporaries, but they certainly didn’t achieve high rank without at least being ruthless.

And what is a ruth, anyway? I’m pretty sure I’ve never had one, so I guess I’m ruthless too.

  76. gummitch Says:

    Mattis is a real prince:

A Manteca Marine convicted of conspiring to kill a 52-year-old Iraqi man will be allowed to re-enlist in the Marine Corps, according to his family and a military attorney.

Though Marines spokesmen would not confirm this week that a decision has been made, a military attorney for Pvt. Marshall Magincalda Jr. said that the commanding general for the Marine Corps Forces had promised Magincalda that he would be able to re-enlist after his term of service expires in November.

A military jury convicted the 24-year-old Sierra High School graduate in August of larceny, housebreaking and conspiracy to murder but acquitted him of murder and kidnapping charges for his role in the killing of an Iraqi man in April 2006.

Normally a felony conviction bars anyone from enlisting or re-enlisting in the Marine Corps, but Magincalda’s attorney, Capt. Bow Bottomly, said Lt. Gen. James Mattis told Magincalda during a private mid-August meeting that his re-enlistment would be OK’d.

  77. bilbobaggins Says:

Ok, now I know why CT is so enraptured with Mattis:

Until Mattis makes a decision otherwise, Wuterich, 27, of Meriden, Conn., is charged with 12 counts of unpremeditated murder in the deaths of 17 Iraqis on Nov. 19, 2005. In all, Marines shot to death 24 Iraqi civilians that day in Haditha after a roadside bombing in which one Marine was killed.

Mattis gets to be the one to decide whether Wuterich is tried for murder or is just subject to a court martial. This is the guy who lead the slaughter of innocent men, women and children at Haditha. Anyone want to bet that any promotion he is being offered is based on him letting Wuterich off murder charges?

All you can do is repeat yourself without any supporting information.

    Comment by CT_V1

No, prosecutors are not getting their butt kicked, sycophants like Mattis are choosing not to charge them with the crimes they have committed or are forgiving them for committing the crimes and allowing them back in the military. Yes, they are potentially innocent, but they should be tried for the crimes they have been accused of committing and let the chips fall where they may. If Mattis chooses to recommend that Wuterich simply be court martialed, then he is obstructing justice.

I know that you have as little respect for the lives of the people in Iraq as Mattis does, and that’s probably why you admire this creep. All that does is to make you a creep too. But, then, we knew you were a creep before you started praising this guy.

I have yet to see CT back up one thing he says.

  90. bilbobaggins Says:

OK folks, I think it’s time to cut CT off. He expects us to come up with facts to prove him wrong when he can’t come up with facts to prove himself right. He has nothing and he knows it. Continuing to argue with him is like spitting in the wind.

  91. bilbobaggins Says:

Everyone here needs to provide proof that the majority of the Marine corps is opposed to Mattis’ continued service in the military.

My god, talk about arrogance. We are all here to serve CT. Who knew?

  92. Lefty Patriot Says:

I’ll give you an assignment: Give me the quote of a Marine with service in Iraq/Afghanistan who didn’t like the LtGen’s words.

It’s not enough that his superiors are constantly shutting him up and hiding him away? You’re getting very good at moving the goalposts, but that isn’t going to win you the game. You lose, and the USA loses, when marine generals excuse the crimes of those under their command.

    Here is one, want more?

I have been silent on this for a long time, but I have to respond. Not all of the media took him out of context. I am sick of hearing that. We did not at my place. We put him IN context. He opened his mouth, and it came out. I served in the Division in the invasion of Iraq. No one questions his guts, or willingness to fight. What makes even old timers like me blanche is the fact that a “highly polished and schooled” Marine General would be so flip in a public forum. There is no such thing as off the record. The audio recording was sold by the organization that had him speak. None of us got a shot at him on camera. Instead, the people in his audience had a problem with it and went public. We did a fair piece and found something interesting about him on USMC.mil. In a powerpoint slide show on dealing with the media, he said the only good reporter is a dead reporter. Endearing.

For the record, Douglas MacArthur had no love for us in WW II. Then in Korea we saved his a** again and he loved us. NO ONE, save Patton, had an ego larger than his. But he had the good sense to know every word he spoke was for the record. Everyone lauds the General and is rushing to his defense. I, nor anyone else expects him to apologize. He spoke his, and lot’s of other people’s mind. But he did not get where he is by not knowing how to avoid stepping on land mines. Warrior or not, no one makes General without having some political savvy. This time, he just stepped on one, and it made HIM look dumb, not the Marine Corps.

Let me leave this thought: If he was enlisted, would he have walked away with just being counselled? Probably not.

  94. Wayne Says:

No answer to my post at 146 CT?

  95. Lefty Patriot Says:

Politics doesn’t overlap military service, so perhaps you shouldn’t defend these military haters, those who are falling flat on their face.
    Comment by CT_V1 — October 8, 2007 @ 5:52 pm

well, in the case of the various “generals” you’re busy sucking off, politicics actually replaces military service. Wromng again, wroang always. You are a glutton for punishment, like Larry Craig.

  96. Wayne Says:

CT, I answered and you run off like a chickenhawk……

I can provide more links as well, since I am a reader of many military blogs.

    Now prove yourself right, chickenhawk.

  97. Wayne Says:

And what I asked for specifically is proof that Mattis is an unfit military officer who lacks respect.

    Comment by CT_V1 — October 8, 2007 @ 6:06 pm

    Liar

    You asked:
Give me the quote of a Marine with service in Iraq/Afghanistan who didn’t like the LtGen’s words.

    You are a lying worm.

  98. TripMaster Monkey Says:

Heh heh…way to shut down CT for trying to move the goalposts, Wayne.

  99. Wayne Says:

It’s printed nestled in the middle of nowhere.

    I answered your quest:
Give me the quote of a Marine with service in Iraq/Afghanistan who didn’t like the LtGen’s words.

You cannot dispute that he did not like the Gen’s words.
Want more before you try moving goalposts again, loser?

  100. TripMaster Monkey Says:

    Wayne sez:

Work the body, Wayne, work the body! ^_^

  101. Wayne Says:

All of you look stupid here, face it.

    Comment by CT_V1 — October 8, 2007 @ 6:24 pm

Only one looking the fool today is you.
A particularly dishonest fool at that.

Spin, spin, spin and hope everyone forgets your dishonesty I highlighted today. Thats all you got.

    Back up your own crap.

Shorter CT: “I ain’t got nothing.”

  105. TripMaster Monkey Says:

    CT_V1 sez:

What do you get paid to do, anyways? Where do you “commute” from.

I’m a network administrator, CT. Thanks for caring.

You made a bad decision to jump into the mosh pit (this thread), Mr. Monkey, because there’s nothing to support you!

I don’t need support, CT…my only purpose here is to laugh myself sick while watching Wayne beat you into paste. ^_^

  106. Wayne Says:

Talking to yourself again, Mr. Monkey.

    Comment by CT_V1 — October 8, 2007 @ 6:41 pm

    Poor CT

When he cannot prove his own statements, he tries to cahnge the subject or attack someone else.

  107. Wayne Says:

I’m done here for the evening. I’ve done my part.

    Comment by CT_V1 — October 8, 2007 @ 6:48 pm

You were done after I proved you wrong, then you tried dishonestly trying to change the goalposts.

    Comment by CT_V1 — October 8, 2007 @ 6:58 pm

I thought you were “done here for the evening”.

For Pete’s sake, CT, stay down! ^_^

Actually you were done here quite some time back and only appear to make as ass of yourself. Congratulations, your parted.

  110. Fools on the Hill Says:

Patraeus didn’t lie, he was just selective.

  111. Eargy Earp Says:

Yes, it was shown at the time of his testimony that Patraeus cooked his statistics.

He did in fact betray all of us and the soldiers in the field with his numbers. He thought the surge would work, and made his numbers show the surge was working.

All we got for it is at least the SAME number of troops as were there before the surge at least until Jan , 2009 and probably longer.

We did not get any recipe or hope for a viable Iraqi economy or government….thus no end in sight.

  112. RUCerious Says:

What?> Wha!?? Petraeus would Betray the truth to carry heavy water for the Bushits?

    Yup
