GOP congressmen quit because of five-day work week.»

Nine Republican congressmen have so far announced that they will not be running for re-election. One of those lawmakers, Rep. Ray LaHood (R-IL), complained “that the Democrats’ new five-day workweek” is part of the reason they’re all retiring:

lahood4.gifI do think the schedule and the flying is a huge pain for people, particularly those who are from the Midwest or even further West,” he said, adding that it’s “probably the worst part of the job.”

“I think that has played into these retirement announcements,” said the seven-term congressman from Peoria.

In Dec. 2006, Rep. Jack Kingston (R-GA) also griped about having to work five days each week, stating, “Marriages suffer. The Democrats could care less about families — that’s what this says.”

Digg It!

  4. Jeremy in Denver Says:

Either that or “I care for my family. My gay prostitute, too!”

And yes. I find it laughable that they complain about working 5 days a week for a hundred thou a year.

Hey, if the work’s so hard, Mr. LaHood, perhaps you should quit and let someone who wants to do the work take over for you. ;)

Geez, first the Dems want the common folks to have govt paid healthcare like their elected politicians, now they want the congressmen to work 5 days a week! What next? Next they’ll want these guys to pay for their own hookers!

Then you wouldn’t pursue a job that required travel. What you wouldn’t do is take the job & then complain that you had to travel so much… or ask to only work 3 days a week. These congressmen are living in a world of make-believe. And you buy into it too. Watercarrier that you are.

    Yeah, didn’t think so.

  10. Candyce Says:

Jeremy, I actually think that’s something like 165,000 a year now. All those pay raises they vote themselves add up.

Whiney bastards aren’t they? Afraid of a little honest work? Maybe they should take a second job, like many of their constituents who have to in order to get by. Sniff, sniff, poor repugs.

Exactly right. I know lots of people whose jobs require them to spend a lot of time away from their families — not to mention all those poor slobs shipped off to Iraq and Afghanistan for more than a year at a time — and it’s what the job requires. If you don’t like it, find another job, but don’t whine that it wasn’t part of the deal from the beginning.

Congress already has huge blocks of time during the year where they’re not in session and a benefits package most people would kill for. Not to mention, they exempt themselves from virtually all their own legislation. I have no sympathy for any of them because they have to work five days a week when they’re actually there.

In that case you either: move to DC, ot you don’t take the job. If you want to hold one of the most powerful jobs in the country, I think it’s a small thing to expect you to work the same work week everyone else does.

    Reall, isn’t this kind of a no-brainer?

And from the article: “Marriages suffer. The Democrats could care less about families — that’s what this says.”

Democrats could care less about their families? This is pathetic… maybe they just have a little more work ethic… nah, that couldn’t be it.

  21. Pete Bogs Says:

Kingston must be right, as Democrats don’t have families(?)

if this is all it took to get these corrupt people to retire, let’s bring on a 7-day work week!

  22. DennisRaines Says:

Sure working 5 days a week in a different city sucks… unless you’re a elected government official, then it’s your job. And it’s not like they can’t afford the plane tickets, and they’re not in DC 12 months a year.

If these weenies cry this hard for having to fly around in jet airplanes imagine if they ever had to do real work. like dig a ditch, or work construction five days a week? America would have no highways, no modern buildings, no cars, no plumbing, just a bunch of whiners sitting in a cave.

  26. Xisithrus Says:

  40. Zwack Says:

So, are these nine Republicans too stupid to realise that their wife could come with them?

I mean, they don’t have to, but… If they really miss them that much that they can spend three days a week away from them, but not five then couldn’t they consider having their wife come with them?

I understand that it’s harder if they have Children as they would then have to decide which school to send their kids to… But it’s not like they don’t get paid enough to be able to afford whichever decision they want to make. Hire a low paid nanny/au pair/baby sitter, send their kids to boarding school… Whatever.

I, on the other hand, plainly stated that I was being sarcastic. I find the idea that anyone who is guaranteed to collect $165,000, tax-free, and medical benefits (and more) for the rest of their lives, whether they work or not, complaining about a rigorous schedule for 5-10 years, who isn’t willing to move their family nearer to their place or work, is ABSOLUTELY PATHETIC. P.A.T.H.E.T.I.C. An embarrassment. Their job isn’t even close to as rigorous or hectic as many in this country that make a fraction of the income, and have to work longer hours. Like, oh, say our boys and girls deployed overseas working for 15-months or longer without a break, without seeing their family.

Solai, yer right. It is a brutal schedule… IF you take it seriously and really try to do the job. Unfortunately, I guess an awful lot of us don’t feel guys like LaHood are doing that job, and to complain about it on top that…

Apart from what you said, we just aren’t in the mood to feel too sorry for the GOOpers right now.

  89. Gregor Samsa Says:

Shorter LaHood: “They even expect me to work for the salary they pay me. The unmitigated gall!”

  90. DallasNE Says:

I suppose Krugman thinks sending troops to Iraq for repeated 15 month tours of duty is family friendly.

    Gotcha, crybaby.

  91. Marie Says:

    Poor babies!
I’m sure it’s better for your families if you stay home. Leave the Congressional work to people who really want to accomplish some good for the nation.
Go home, play golf, fire up the grill, make a drink and get the hell out of my government.

  92. Marie Says:

I wonder what they thought when they ran for office - that this was a gravy train? Work a part time job, with huge benefits for life? Wanting to feel important?
Geez, lots of people work more than 5 days a week; lots of them travel a lot - they don’t get month long vacations several times a year; I can think of 165,000 right now who might like to trade places with them.

Krugman??? WTF??? Do you mean Kingston???

  94. Willy Says:

Isn’t life tough when you have to work five-days a week in a high paying job.

    Poor Republican babies.

  95. Arn Gunnutes Says:

    No worries…

He can get a job as Eddie Munster’s cousin in the next movie remake.

  96. Arn Gunnutes Says:

He won’t even need makeup for the part.

    UGLY!

  97. Jim Says:

#103: Leave the Congressional work to people who really want to accomplish some good for the nation.

In other words, progressives. Sounds good to me.

  98. woodguy Says:

I think this clown should talk to his fellow gooper Larry Craig. Ol’ Larry seems to get lots of “down time”, especially when he’s travelling.

  99. A Patriot Acting Says:

I guess the illustrious Fred Thompson left the Senate in 2003 because the three day work week his GOP majority stringently enforced was just too much for him.

  100. fossilhippie Says:

I’ll bet I spend more time in traffic each day than he spends flying first class in a week.

  101. Clumberfeet Says:

The 2.5 day work week caused by Columbus Day was a bad time to announce this.

  102. ennealogic Says:

My response to these Congresspeople: You poor bastards! I feel so sorry for you and your 5-day workweek and your amazing salaries and your perks and your terrific health care and your fancy offices and your self-important smug photo ops. /sarcasm

  103. Leftside Annie Says:

Oh, I’d love for Tampachessdon to read and comment on *THIS* thread!!

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!

  104. emoore Says:

Hey, at least they’re being honest…

  105. ed3839 Says:

While this is very awesome, I can’t help but play the devil’s advocate and wonder how many Democrats have also announced that they’re not running for reelection this next term. Is it significantly fewer? Only one of the nine republicans actually said his reason was the 5-day work week. How many congressmen regularly decide to retire at each election period? There are like 400 of them (I think) so there could be a good number each time.

  106. United States of Embarassment Says:

The extremely honorable and distinguished Mr. LaHood is/was my congressman. What a lazy prick. He has been sucking on the governent teat his whole life as an aide to the previous rep before he got the gig. Too bad he never had a REAL job!

  107. JoshDest Says:

    Oh man…what’s that noise?!

    It’s
    the
    waaaah-ambulance!

  108. bkurtin Says:

Oh my GOD! Those horrible Democrats. Members of God’s Own Party are being forced to work FIVE WHOLE DAYS A WEEK? Oh, the horror of it, the staggering unfairness.

Just goes to show how insulated those congressional critters have become from real life. I am disabled, live in a wheelchair, have partial aphasia (speech difficulty following a massive stroke) have autoimmune diseases and am overweight due to the medications I have to take, am recovering from a fractured back AND I WORK SEVEN DAYS A WEEK BECAUSE I LOVE WHAT I DO. I help people retain their Constitutional rights.

Damn, where do I sign up to become a Congress critter? I’d love to have two days off a week. Those sorry sons and daughters of unmarried parents (cleaned that one up, didn’t I? ) will say anything to give the liberals a black eye. They’re somehow evil people because they are against the FAMILY!

Well, dammit, I’m 66, work my rear off, and I love it. I’ve worked this way for years. What’s wrong with a rich Congress critter who cries because he or she has to WORK for a living. Poor babies.
