Rohrabacher: Blackwater CEO Is ‘An American Hero Just Like Ollie North Was’»

rohrabacher.jpgFollowing the September 16 shootout in Baghdad’s Nisour Square that left 17 Iraqis dead, private security firm Blackwater USA has come under intense scrutiny and criticism. The Iraqi government wants them out of the country, the FBI is investigating them, and CEO Erik Prince was forced to defend the company before Congress last week.

But not everyone is jumping on the anti-Blackwater bandwagon. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA), for whom Prince once interned, is so supportive of the company that he believes Prince “is on his way to being an American hero just like Ollie North was“:

“Erik Prince is doing everything he can to help his country,” Rohrabacher said. “He could be making ten times the money without anybody calling him names.” […]

Rohrabacher did not attend the Blackwater hearing last week before Rep. Henry Waxman’s oversight committee. Rohrabacher is not a member of that panel.

He did watch it on television, and he likened it to the Iran Contra sessions at which former Col. Oliver North testified during the Reagan administration. Rohrabacher was a Reagan speechwriter.

“Prince,” Rohrabacher said, “is on his way to being an American hero just like Ollie North was.”

Oliver North — Rohrabacher’s point of comparison for Prince — was found guilty of obstruction of justice and destroying documents after arranging arms sales to Iran and diverting the profits to the Contras in Nicaragua. His conviction, however, was overturned on a technicality.

Though Rohrbacher claims Prince “is doing everything he can to help his country,” the actions of Prince’s company have actually been a “detriment to the mission” in Iraq. In a report released two weeks ago, Brookings scholar P.W. Singer demonstrates how “the use of private military contractors appears to have harmed, rather than helped the counterinsurgency efforts of the U.S. mission in Iraq.”

Here are some examples Singer provides of how private contractors like Blackwater “undermine” U.S. efforts in Iraq:

- Inflamed popular opinion against, rather than for, the American mission through operational practices that ignore the fundamental lessons of counterinsurgency.

- Participated in a series of abuses that have undermined efforts at winning ‘hearts and minds’ of the Iraqi people.

- Weakened American efforts in the ‘war of ideas’ both inside Iraq and beyond.

- Revealed a double standard towards Iraqi civilian institutions that undermines efforts to build up these very same institutions, another key lesson of counterinsurgency.

- Forced policymakers to jettison strategies designed to win the counterinsurgency on multiple occasions, before they even had a chance to succeed.

Before declaring his “philosophically-compatible” friend an “American hero,” Rohrabacher should look up the term, where he will find out that it doesn’t mean a “detriment to the mission.”

Digg It!

Ollie North, the Right’s version of a hero. That pretty much says it all about the Right and their mindset and morals and ethics.

You said it, Mr. Rohrabacher. Not us. Two criminals hiding behind their medals.

Ollie North is a punk, a big crybaby that should have served out his role as a sacrificial lamb. The Prince family is are just opportunistic fascists.

  9. thelonegunman Says:

felons are heroes to the Repigs - from the Watergate gang, to fascist dictators who tortured and killed millions in Latin America as the US’s proxy in those regions, to the Reagan team that created Iran-Contra (many of whom escaped prosecution AND ARE NOW trying to instigate an illegal war with Iran) through to Jack, Scooter, and the Cheney Crew…

Yep — I think that pretty much says it all.

    and Jake, too

  18. Veritas Says:

Dipshit, indeed #1! Rohrbacher is the quintessential ding-a-ling to support individuals who believe themselves to be “above the law”. As for Erik Prince “helping his country”, that is quite arguable at this point since unprovoked murder of innocent citizens would hardly endear Prince or this country to the people whose country we’ve already occupied.

Furthermore, it’s not like Prince is doing this “out of the goodness of his heart” - give me a break here! He’s being paid megabucks by his compadre, Chimpy - probably plenty money going under the table as well. I think we need for Prince to “open his books” for a full-fledged investigation. Then let’s watch all the “rats run”.

  19. Guido OBGYN Lover Says:

What a stupid thing to say. What an outrage.

  20. Veritas Says:

Wasn’t that a new $92 billion dollar contract we’ve just awarded Prince following this obvious wrongdoing? What balls!

  21. gummitch Says:

So, we FINALLY found someone your side can agree are “phony” soldiers: Prince and North?

    Comment by Rory — October 9, 2007 @ 2:52 pm

Oliver North was a Marine, not a soldier. He served with distinction in Vietnam, then behaved in a dishonorable fashion while attached to the Reagan White House serving under Poindexter. He wasn’t a “phony soldier” but he was definitely a “phony hero.”

    Nice try, but typically lame.

  22. Nevar Says:

Lay not with your treasures here on earth, Daryll, you should know that…

  23. Veritas Says:

When all is said and done, maybe Prince and his fake soldiers (who couldn’t pass muster inthe real armed forces) will be strung by their nuts.

  24. Candyce Says:

If Prince is a hero, he’s being handsomely rewarded, unlike the the true heroes of the war who are being denied adequate health care, being denied their college funds, and being denied a lousy 3.5% pay raise.

  25. Uncle Ho Says:

    Daryll is off his meds.

  26. Veritas Says:

I think it’s time for the american people to demand to inspect Blackwater’s books. After all, they were awarded an amorally priced, no-bid contract just like Haliburton. Cut the purse strings on all of this Congress or you, too, will be out of a job in 08.

  28. cha cha cha Says:

rohrabacher use to chill out with the taliban, so his credibility is pretty much shot to begin with.

  29. Veritas Says:

And I suspect that what we’re discovering about Blackwater will pale in comparison to what we find out over the coming year and subsequent years. We’ll find that Bush has raided the treasury and bankrupted this country. He’ll be well on his way into exile (or good plastic surgery) in Paraguay by then with this country twisting in the wind.

In this case, Dana Rohrabacher is such a fruitcake and what he says is so irrational, no sane person could possibly defend this “logically”, so who comes to da rescue?

Bible-thumpin’ Darryl.. who doesn’t need to have any “logical’ argument, jes’ “faith”…

  32. Perry logan Says:

I believe the technical term for Rohrabacher’s comment is “Republican brainfart.”

  33. Leftside Annie Says:

And we are supposed to believe Dana Rohrabacher the RepubliCON Reicher why……..?

    He’s a really loonytoon.

  34. missmolly Says:

Anyone know if Rohrabacher represents the same district Blackwater is trying to set up their new California training facility in?

    Comment by Nevar — October 9, 2007 @ 2:43 pm

No. Rohrabacher represents the 46th district in California, which is mostly the northern coast of Orange County.

The proposed Blackwater training facility is marked for a location about three miles north of a little town by the Mexican border called Potrero. This spot lies close to the border where the 51st district and the 52nd district meet.

The 51st district (mostly Imperial county, but includes all of the California/Mexico border) is represented by Bob Filner, a Democrat.

The 52nd district (eastern suburban San Diego plus eastern central San Diego county) is represented by Duncan Hunter, a Republican.

It’s difficult to tell which of these two districts Potero falls in, but it looks like it leans more to the 51st (Filner’s).

  35. VerbalKint Says:

Speaking of Duncan Hunter, he is at least as bad as Rohrbacher. Depraved idiots.

  36. dim wit Says:

“Blackwater charges the government $1,222 per day per guard, “equivalent to $445,000 per year, or six times more than the cost of an equivalent U.S. soldier,””

Apparently Rohrabacher isn’t one of those fiscal conservatives: Why pay a soldier when you can pay a “contractor” six times as much?

Here’s a little factoid for the clueless Rohrabacher: Ollie North is a “hero” only to the very loud 25%ER minority in this country.
To the rest of us sane people, he’s an extra-Constitutional scumbag traitor.
Also, it can be said that Rohrabacher himself is a traitor to the United States. He should be called “Taliban Rohrabacher”.
Look at this photo of him haging out with America’s enemies:

    http://www.theleftcoaster.com/archives/001981.php

Also, he had this to say about the Taliban:

“[Rohrabacher] says the Taliban are devout traditionalistsnot terrorists or revolutionaries. He believes a Taliban takeover [of Afghanistan] would be a positive development.” Washington Report on Middle East Affairs, November/December 1996 issue

    Comment by Daryll — October 9, 2007 @ 3:12 pm

I hate to burst your bubble, Darryl, but if Mr. Prince was the “true patriot” you claim him to be, he wouldn’t be charging the US taxpayers so much money for his firm’s “services”. He would lower his rates (by about 80%) to show that he’s doing it for love of country. Instead, he clearly does what he does for love of money. And remember, “the love of money is the root of all evil.”

  41. missmolly Says:

So, we FINALLY found someone your side can agree are “phony” soldiers: Prince and North?

    Comment by Rory — October 9, 2007 @ 2:52 pm

No — both North and Prince served this country in uniform. Nothing phony about that.

But there are worse things than being phony. Criminal activity is one of them. Engaging in military practices that undermine the overall mission of your superiors is another.

    Comment by Daryll — October 9, 2007 @ 3:12 pm

Those who truly protect and provide security to this country are worthy of our praise and thanks. However, Erik Prince is being investigated for a number of abuses, including killing innocent civilians, unnecessarily inflaming local opinion against us, and undermining strategies put in place by our (real) military. If any of these allegations turn out to be true, Prince has endangered American lives and set back any progress we may have made in that area.

You may consider me unpatriotic because I don’t bow down and worship men like Erik Prince. I consider myself patriotic because I will NOT support those who provide more endangerment than security to us.

“Considered” by whom - you? If your view of democracy is anything like your theology then I am overjoyed not to be considered “patriotic” by the likes of you. You are really becoming more arrogant and condescending with each day of posting. Perhaps you should spend more time REALLY studying the Bible and reflecting on its meaning instead of blogging. The Caliphate is a lost cause and has been for some time.

  56. missmolly Says:

    Comment by Daryll — October 9, 2007 @ 2:35 pm

OK, let’s see. I truly believe that everybody has some redeeming qualities, so here goes. Cheney, Bush, and Prince all appear to be successful husbands and fathers (from what we know, anyway). Bush and Cheney are still married to their first wives and each is the father of two daughters, all of whom appear to have turned out all right. Prince is married to his second wife (his first wife died of cancer), and he has six children. No divorces among the three of them, and so far not one of the children involved has written any father-bashing tell-all books. This is a worthy accomplishment these days.

Unfortunately, I can’t think of any political accomplishments by these men I’d like to celebrate.

This sounds a great deal like the “we’re fighting them there so we don’t have to fight them here” rationale. And this has already been debunked several times.

If Al Qaeda wants to blow up a bridge over here, how is our fighting in Iraq going to stop them? It’s not like we have all the terrorists in the world roped into an arena over there from which they cannot escape. Furthermore, the Al Qaeda of Iraq isn’t the same group of people responsible for 9/11.

    Comment by Daryll — October 9, 2007 @ 3:39 pm

Iraq was NOT supporting terrorism before we invaded. Yes, Saddam Hussein was a tyrannical dictator who probably terrified his own people, but he wasn’t a global terrorist, nor did he support global terrorist groups (he had no use for Al Qaeda or Osama bin Laden at all). The fact that Al Qaeda is there now is due to our making a nice breeding ground for their recruiting efforts by destabilizing that country.

Iran hasn’t committed any acts of international terrorism since taking over the American Embassy in 1979 and taking Americans hostage — except for a war they had with their neighbor, Iraq.

Most of the terrorists responsible for 9/11 were Saudi Arabians. Osama bin Laden is Saudi Arabian. It sounds like if there’s any country supporting terrorism here, it’s ……… Saudi Arabia! Which we won’t invade or harm in any way because of the connection between the Saudi royal family and the Bushes.

    Next argument, please.

It is really as simple as that. They had no choice. They are only ones who had the balls to stoop to immorality….well hell, let just say it, to insure the United States would continue to exist.

If a Republican commits a crime or acts immorally it is a given that it saved our country from complete destruction. Every time, get used to it.

Jesus was a phony? Is that true Brother Daryll? We’ll dip me in shit and hang me by my wrists, Daryll and I agree on something.

Glad to see you are finally realizing that your former religion is a vapid wasteland Bro., welcome to reality.

  83. nanlichi Says:

That is supposed to read “Well…”, not ” We’ll…”

Do you want to practice the Islamic faith? If not, you should be supporting individuals like Mr. Prince. Comment by Daryll

Jesus is a phony. Prince, Cheney and Bush are terrorists, who should be tried and hanged. Rightards are supporting terrorism, Iraqis are protecting their soil.

    Those are the facts.

  86. Ditch Mitch KY Says:

Remember this is Rep. Dana “DinoFart” Rohrabacher, who made idiotic statements challenging the impact of global climate change. He said dinosaur flatulence had caused an earlier warming of the atmosphere, so we shouldn’t worry.

Good to know that DinoFart supports Erik Prince & his Blackwater thugs. Nice.

  89. Chocolate Jesus Says:

Daryll, please explain what your definition of terrorism is. Then PLEASE PLEASE tell us you truly beleive that we have never sponsored terrorist groups, not do we ally ourselves with them.

You DO know that we did in central america in the 80’s right? Jeane Kirkpatrick essentially wrote an essay in defense of supporting terrorist regimes. Government officials pled guilty to lying to congress about it.
If you think that merely sponsoring terror is enough to merit bombing, he need to start bombing ourselves.

And you DO know our friends the saudis have government approved TELETHONS for terrorist groups, right? Why arent we laying the sword on them too, huh? Because what you’re saying is the mere fact a country supports terrorist groups is enough for us to justify bombing them, right?

You mock me with your false and hipocritical piety sir. THeres a place for false christians like you.

  90. Grizzled Vet Says:

    Daryll:

These “treasures,” you have cited [should have read “treasonous”], have combined to create the worst administration in U.S. history! Former President Carter may have toned down his assessment, but I stand by mine and his initial statement. Remember the London Guardian’s headline the day after the 2004 presidential election: “How Could 50,000,000 People Be So Stupid?” We are reaping what they sowed! I detest that you sullied my birth date with your idiotic post!
