"Best economy" is the last place loyal Bushies will find refuge. Just because the debt ceiling has been raised consistently under Bush's watch, hey, no big deal - percentage of income, don't you know? What rubbish. We owe foreign countries so much money, we can't even get China to lean on a tin-horn dictatorship like Burma to stop beating up monks. Meanwhile the Worst President in History stamps his feet and demands action, his way or the highway. I'm as frustrated as anyone about our kids still dying in that stupid Iraqi hell-hole, but at least the Congress is in session, working and voting, and not taking four-day weekends to roll in the mud with lobbyists.

Half of the commenters here simply ignore the article--in favor of repeating their tired memes about approval ratings and ending the war.

The facts prove the Democratic Congress has been awesome:

"President Bush's success rating in the Democratic-controlled House has fallen this year to a half-century low, and he prevailed on only 14 percent of the 76 roll call votes on which he took a clear position.

"So far this year, Democrats have backed the majority position of their caucus 91 percent of the time on average on such votes. That marks the highest Democratic unity score in 51 years."

Don't let the media rhetoric fool you. The Democrats have acquitted themselves quite well--especially given their bare majority in both houses, and a relentlessly obstructionist Republican minority.

...should be ashamed of not being an American...

Hey bub: I don't appreciate being denounced as "un-American" by anybody, least of all some snotfaced brat who sees himself as the self-anointed protector of The One True Way To Save America.

Impeachment won’t end the war any sooner, won’t result in a conviction of Bush, and would only strengthen the GOP in upcoming elections. And ending the war is priority #1 for me.

listening to thom hartmann rebroadcast on XM...

he just told a story about sen. kennedy's email being hacked into,
by some guy who worked for another senator - I MISSED THE NAME...

the dems were confounded by the way the repugs seemed to be a step ahead whenever they tried to put legislation out... then the dems figured out that kennedy's email was being read by this guy... WHO?

evidently this guy quit, but there was no action taken...
apologies and move on... this was some years ago...

The Democrats need to fight fire with fire and do not allow a vote on any Iraq war appropriation bill and impeachment must be put on the table. Our nation's soul is being soiled by Bush and his fellow felons. If we do not start impeachment, the Iraq war will never end. I don't care if we don't have enough votes to convict in the Senate. I want the evidence of Bush's multiple crimes to be on full, public display. Only then will the American public know the full extent of the Bush Crime Family Administration crimes.

“I don’t think they’ve gotten anything done,” House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) said in March.

And just what has little ole Johnny done in this same period of time?

Why, tried his best to get the Democrats to pass legislation, and begged the leadership to get to work, that's what. Because he has the interest of the American people at heart, don't ya know?

Don’t get me wrong: I would like to see Bush tried for war crimes at The Hague. But I also think impeachment hearings would be bad government, and would play to the GOP’s strengths, which are obstruction and diversion.

Comment by koko the talking gorilla — October 9, 2007 @ 5:40 pm

I agree that impeachment is not something we can accomplish right now, without the Republicans giving us that critical tipping point of votes.

HOWEVER, as we get nearer and nearer to Nov '08, the Democrats need to suddenly, wholly, without dropping any hints, go for the throat. They should, as the country rallies around them near the end of the election cycle, reveal what I hope to be their plan. If we are not at war with Iran *fingers crossed*, they need to put the impeachment of Dick Cheney, George W. Bush, and all of those in his administration (like Addington and the other slime-ball attorneys doing the REAL dirty work), the DoJ, etc, on the table and in to full-swing simultaneously. Allow the impeachment hearings to last starting from the middle of '08 onward, through November, through the end of Bush's term in office and beyond.

If the Democrats can time it just right, they can get the entire nation behind them like nothing we've seen in any of our lifetimes, while simultaneously preventing George W. Bush from pardoning anyone of import at the end of his term!

If we have to wait until '09, it might be too late, and all of the most crucial pardons may have been written. We the People CANNOT AFFORD another Nixon administration. We cannot allow all of the corrupt individuals behind the scenes who REALLY subverted justice, who REALLY controlled the levers of power while it was being abused, to escape justice and return in another 20-30 years with a new group ready to try again.

We the People need all of the corrupt members of this administration to face severe punishment, including life in prison for the core group. That's before the world courts get a hold of them.

Please, whatever happens, not another Gerald Ford. Not another pardon of Nixon. Not another virtually-scot-free ride for all the enablers behind the scenes.

Just because your attitude and life sucks does not mean the rest of us aren’t happy and living the good life. There is no reason to be ignorant in 2007……….unless you choose to be.

Comment by Billy Hill — October 9, 2007 @ 6:33 pm

more lies and ignorance from the knuckle-dragging, fact-challenged rightard. The best economy in the history of the world was under Clinton. Bush destroyed it. The stock market is still lower than it was in 1999, in real terms. Unemployment numbers are a lie. the numbers of happy, living-the-good-life people are way down from the 90s. All the facts give the lie to your foolish ignorance, Billy boy. Just another repuke liar.

Impeachment on the table? NO
But hey, they have the highest number of roll calls in history!

Holding bush accountable for spying on the Americans? NO
But hey, they have the highest number of roll calls in history!

Stopping the Iraq war by withholding the purse $$ and saving American lives? NO
But hey, they have the highest number of roll calls in history!

Demanding subpoenaes be followed or else obstruction of justice? NO
But hey, they have the highest number of roll calls in history!

What a pathetic group of "leaders" that have infiltrated OUR party.
They have failed We The People with their enabling of bush and his criminal administration. Pelosi, Reid, and the rest of the ROLL OVER Democrats need to be removed!

better check yourself there slick……… the debt is LESS than 1.6 % of GDP which makes it the lowest in the last 50 years.

Where did you find your data, in the garbage?

$9 trillion gross national debt / $13 trillion GDP = almost 70%, "slick."

Honestly, you think you can say any mindless crap and get away with it. What a worthless know-nothing blowhard you are.

Replying to my own comment:

What a bunch of spineless twits.

Except for a few.

David Obey, to name one. As chair of the House Appropriations Committee, he's said he won't report another war funding bill out of that committee without troop withdrawal deadlines. Good on 'im. Let's see if he can stand up to pressure Pelosi.

Lynn Woolsey and Barbara Lee, authors of a bill that would fund a safe and orderly withdrawal of troops from Iraq.

Pelosi, of course, is quite willing to pressure Democrats to NOT impeach, NOT withhold war funding, etc. And she's quite willing to let bills come to the floor that expand this Administration's ability to spy on all of us.

I'll be writing Cindy Sheehan a check as her campaign proceeds. Maybe more than one. And living in the district right next door, I'm in a perfect position to go knock on doors for her.

Ooooh, roll call votes! How very exciting!

So what do we have to show for all those roll call votes?

Ending or even significantly watering down the disaster in Iraq?

Reining in the lawless behavior, the ass-wiping with the Constitution, of this Administration?

Naaah. They're giving Bush and Cheney everything they want.

Tell me again why I busted my ass and my pocketbook electing Democrats in 2006?

Democratic-Led Congress Breaks Record For Highest Number Of Roll Call Votes In History

Didn't the Daily Show do a segment on some news channel (CNN?) that was promising "the most news stories per hour," and Stewart basically pointed out that the stories they WERE reporting already lacked any depth. Ratcheting up the frequency only made for high-speed fluff.

This headline is no different; It's heavy on the status quo crapola. Of course they can slide the GOP giveaway legislation through when it's coated in enough congressional KY to allow for such as the NSA illegal spying vote to shove into the abused voter quicker. And hey, those Iraq blank-check lube jobs were like greased lightning. Bend over, we got more NSA insertions to go...

Say AAAAAAHHH!

Sorry, doesn’t change the fact that since they’ve been elected, they’ve accomplished nothing.

Accomplished nothing? I don't think so. They were able to get that MoveOn condemnation pushed through pretty effectively.

if Republicans started impeachment hearings, their approval numbers would skyrocket

You meant Dems of course, and last time I looked only about a third of Americans wanted to impeach.

I'm sure it pisses off lots of you, but I'm more of a pragmatist. Impeachment won't end the war any sooner, won't result in a conviction of Bush, and would only strengthen the GOP in upcoming elections. Ending the war is my #1 priority.

Impeachment will not succeed unless 17 Republican Senators support it. And so far the White House-GOP Senate bond has been unbreakable.

That's why I say Pelosi and Reid are doing a good thing, smacking the GOP around on health care. About 70% all Americans support universal health care, and it's certain to force a split with the White House.

And once that fissure opens, who knows?
