Rush Smears 12-Yr Old: ‘They Filled His Head With Lies Just As They Have Some Of These Soldiers’»

rushYesterday, ThinkProgress noted the right wing has been orchestrating a coordinated effort to smear a 12 year old recipient of SCHIP. These conservatives have been propagating baseless “facts” to suggest that young Graeme Frost was actually a rich kid being pampered by the government.

Rush Limbaugh has joined in the smear campaign. On his radio show yesterday, Rush introduced his hit job on Graeme by saying, “I had some rudimentary information on this two weeks ago, and it wasn’t enough for me to trust going with. But since then, it has been verified, and most of it’s been verified by a ‘Freeper’ at Free Republic.” Apparently, a posting by a “freeper” is all Rush needs for confirmation.

Rush proceeded to recycle the myths that Graeme and his sister must be fat-cat recipients of government welfare because they attend “one of Baltimore’s expensive private schools” and own a house in a decent neighborhood. As we noted yesterday, Graeme has a scholarship to the private school. His sister’s tuition is covered by the state due to her brain injuries, and the house was purchased for $55,000 in 1991 when the neighborhood was not as safe as it is today.

Limbaugh then tried to draw a parallel between Graeme and his “phony soldiers” remark:

So the bottom line for me is: They can’t rely on truth to make their case for their cause. They have to lie. Be it about me, be it about their own voters (such as the Frosts) be it about President Bush, they must lie — and anybody who stands in the way of their succeeding with that lie becomes an enemy, becomes a target. That’s where I and my buddies in talk radio come in. We are a thorn in their side because we represent the truth they are trying to hide, the truth that they are lying about, and they have to do something about it — and they have to do that by lying. […]

They send the kid out to lie. They filled this kid’s head with lies just as they have some of these soldiers about me. Put lies in the kid’s head or put it on the script that he’s reading. He goes out and reads it. He’s 12-years-old! They will use anybody! They’ll corrupt anybody, to get where they’re headed. That’s who they are, folks.

The real “bottom line” is: Rush propagates baseless information from a “freeper” to attack a 12-year old, fails to determine the facts for himself, and then accuses others of not being able to “rely on truth to make their case.”

When right-wingers attack soldiers who disagree with them on Iraq or kids who disagree with them on health care, that is indeed where Rush and his “hate radio” buddies “come in.” The right-wing attack machine personally assaults anyone for daring to disagree.

    I’m going to post the entire Graeme transcript because I sure don’t see what lies Graeme told. Maybe Rushbo can be more specific.

    Hi, my name is Graeme Frost. I’m 12 years old and I live in Baltimore, Maryland. Most kids my age probably havent heard of CHIP, the Childrens Health Insurance Program. But I know all about it, because if it weren’t for CHIP, I might not be here today.

    CHIP is a law the government made to help families like mine afford healthcare for their kids. Three years ago, my family was in a really bad car accident. My younger sister Gemma and I were both hurt. I was in a coma for a week and couldn’t eat or stand up or even talk at first. My sister was even worse.

    I was in the hospital for five-and-a-half months and I needed a big surgery. For a long time after that, I had to go to physical therapy after school to get stronger. But even though I was hurt badly, I was really lucky. My sister and I both were.

    My parents work really hard and always make sure my sister and I have everything we need, but the hospital bills were huge. We got the help we needed because we had health insurance for us through the CHIP program. But there are millions of kids out there who don’t have CHIP, and they wouldn’t get the care that my sister and I did if they got hurt. Their parents might have to sell their cars or their houses, or they might not be able to pay for hospital bills at all.

    Now I’m back to school. One of my vocal chords is paralyzed so I don’t talk the same way I used to. And I can’t walk or run as fast as I did. The doctors say I can’t play football any more, but I might still be able to be a coach. I’m just happy to be back with my friends.

    I don’t know why President Bush wants to stop kids who really need help from getting CHIP. All I know is I have some really good doctors. They took great care of me when I was sick, and I’m glad I could see them because of the Childrens Health Program.

    I just hope the President will listen to my story and help other kids to be as lucky as me. This Graeme Frost, and this has been the Weekly Democratic Radio address.

    Before you bankrupt the country? Get real. The pittance being spent on programs like this don’t come close to comparing with the cash being spent in Iraq right now. Hell, it doesn’t even compare to the money being lost in Iraq. Couple that with the tax breaks to the wealthy & there’s your “bankrupting the govt”. You’re nickel & diming the poor while giving the rich huge breaks by way of noncompetitive contracts, tax breaks & huge checks for no services. They essentially ended the notion of habeus corpus and have put justices on the SC who do not believe in precedent. They have made listening to citizens phone calls without a warrant or probable cause acceptable. They have established a new class of individuals who are not accountable under US or any other laws. They have broken the budget. They have ended the notion of competitive bidding. They lost an entire US city and shrugged their shoulders. They broke down the barriers between the church and government. Yadda Yadda Yadda, and they have made all of this perfectly palatable to their supporters as well as getting all of it passed easily. You think that overturning abortion would have been an easy issue for them yet they never even tried. All this makes me believe 100% that they only keep the issue around for political purposes because if abbortion was illegal then many of those supporters would have no reason to support the right. It is all part of their market segmentation approach to gaining votes. After the votes are tallied they go right back to their regualr agenda though.

    I have to disagree with you. I believe that the #1 difference between the right and the left in this country is that while we all agree that the world is a dangerous place, the right believes that it always will be and that you must destroy those who diasagree with you, while the left believes that the world can be made a better place if we all just learn to drop our ignorant prejudices and actually learn the truth about one another. The right wants to tell you who you should fear, while the left wants to tell you who you should love. The right wants you to hide in a corner in fear, while the left wants you to come out and see for yourself what is happening. The big difference would have been that the government would have responded to Katrina in a manner similar to how they responded to the three Hurricanes that hit Florida (a battleground state) ion 2004 (an election year).     And considering how the weight of health care costs for employees gets heavier and heavier each year for corporations, that day may not be far off. Many smaller companies can no longer offer their employees health care insurance at all, or they can offer a group plan where the employee pays 100% of the premiums themselves.

    Like it or not, Americans are already paying for the health care of others. Not through taxes, but through higher prices for goods and services. When you buy a Ford Taurus, you are paying more for the health care of the Ford employees who made the car than you are paying for the steel that went into the car. And it will get worse.

Have you read the U.S. Constitution? It begins, “We the People…”, not “We the Individuals Looking Out For Ourselves.” If this country truly was about “every man for himself”, then why would corporations bother to merge with one another? Why would people enter into contracts with each other? Why would we even have social institutions like churches or professional sports teams if everyone was only looking out for himself? As for your comment on “parasites”, the defense department defends our national property as well as our lives, and the rich pay a disproportionately low amount of taxes for the protection of their property.

    4. It has made us the most powerful and industrious nation in the history of this planet. Heads up, as of 2006 the European Union has passed the USA in GDP. Most people in Canada pay about 22% in income tax, and they get free health care with it. And it’s a democracy. Their highest tax bracket is 29%.

But once again this distraction has nothing to do with the notion that the Republican party only uses abortion as a political tool and really has no concerns for the unborn or any living person other than themselves.

    As an aside I think it is telling that you simply pull one item out of the list to harp on, I’ll take it that because you don’t address any other point in the list that you agree and that since you don’t address the main point of the post that you agree that abortion is only a political tool to be used when convenient (election and fundraising times)
