Five years ago today, the House of Representatives voted to authorize the military force against Iraq. At 3:05 pm on Oct. 10, 2002, the House registered a 296-133 vote in approval of Bush’s request. Bush immediately hailed the vote: “I would like to thank the members of the House of Representatives, just as I thanked Speaker Hastert and Leader Gephardt a few minutes ago, for the very strong bipartisan vote authorizing the use of force in Iraq if it becomes necessary.” Here is the list of 133 House members who courageously voted no:
These lawmakers are all members of “the 20/20 Foresight Club,” who refused to knuckle under to the political pressure exerted prior to the ‘02 midterms.
October 10th, 2007 at 3:18 pmI thought the Republican vote was interesting as well. Ron Paul voted “NO” and continues to be consistently against the war. But really odd was Hostettler’s “No” vote. It would be interesting to know why he voted no, when he has at least since that time, been an extremely strong Bush supporter.
October 10th, 2007 at 3:18 pmWe would seem to be back in the world of 2002, if you listen to Republicans:
If Mitt Romney were President, he would want “talk to his attorneys” before he orders attacks Iran…
So the part of the U. S. Constitution that says “only Congress shall declare war” no longer applies Republican Presidents or GOP wannabes…
These GOP “Presidential candidates” are all insane imperial aggressors, except for Ron Paul.
October 10th, 2007 at 3:21 pmDeGette and Udall representing CO!
October 10th, 2007 at 3:22 pmAnd they’re not all Democrats! Just shows that the Repubs don’t always do everything as a monolithic unit.
I am pleased to see that my representative at the time is on that list.
October 10th, 2007 at 3:22 pmDark
Day.
October 10th, 2007 at 3:23 pmAh, Strickland – a fellow psychologist and my state’s governor. Life is getting better here in Buckeye Country. Might we be blue in 2008?
October 10th, 2007 at 3:23 pmTo paraphrase the current corrupt, crooked president’s remarks about the vote “I, hterrya would like to thank the members of the House of Representatives (including my Representative, Lloyd Doggett, who saw through the lying, disingenuous tactics of the president and voted AGAINST this unconstitutional, immoral bill.
Special thanks to Rep. Dennis Kucinich, who voted against EVERY bill that funded our invasion, occupation, and destruction of Iraq! Even my representative didn’t do that!
October 10th, 2007 at 3:26 pm“if it becomes necessary.â€
This was the first huge lie that Bush told on his march to war. He had decided it was necessary before he even took office.
So here we are 6 years later occupying Iraq while bankrupting our own country. Good work George.
October 10th, 2007 at 3:28 pmThis date should henceforth be commemorated as
Kick a Republican in the crotch for getting us into this illegal war

Ron Paul is insane on a LOT of stuff. Just not this stuff!
October 10th, 2007 at 3:29 pmBush wants to thank congress for changign course from Osama to Saddam when Saddam was not behind 9/11?
Securing the oil is more important than terrorists? WTF?
October 10th, 2007 at 3:30 pmSpecial thanks to Rep. Dennis Kucinich, who voted against EVERY bill that funded our invasion, occupation, and destruction of Iraq!
Here, here! I concur totally. Dennis Kucinich is a man of principle and courage. He would make a great President. It’s too bad that the Powers that Be have already made up their minds that he won’t be a candidate. If every Democrat, Independent and Republican out there really knew who this man was and what he stands for, I believe he would be the front runner hands down. I believe even some Republicans would vote for him.

DAMN RIGHT!!
KUCINICH/FEINGOLD ‘08
Because Hillary, Obama & Edwards won’t.
October 10th, 2007 at 3:32 pmMy representative Darlene Hooley is a member of the 20/20 club. Unfortunately she has made a few bad votes lately including voting for the FISA bill before vacation. I gave her hell for that one. Didn’t hear back from her. I expect she got an earful.

Presidents have gotten around that pesky little constitutional requirement by not calling them “wars”.

Not our current corrupt, crooked president. He is our WAR president, remember? He LOVES being unconstitutional!
October 10th, 2007 at 3:37 pmGood to see so many of us agree about Kucenich, wish the rest of our country did…It pisses me off that we are a year away from voting and the media has Hillery the winner….This kind of crap is why to many people don’t even want to vote……Blessings
October 10th, 2007 at 3:40 pmA better list would be the Aye votes so we could start writing letters to those former Reps.
Buh-bye!
October 10th, 2007 at 3:49 pmD’oh! nevermind…
October 10th, 2007 at 3:54 pmWe know what you meant, Rowdy!
October 10th, 2007 at 4:00 pm;)
Thanks for this list, TP. Good work. This will become the evidence the people will need when they go to the polls in 08. These individuals deserve a vote of confidence *unless they’ve sullied themselves in some other debacle or debouchery since then*.
I find the “yea” vote from Waxman and Murtha disconcerting, however.
October 10th, 2007 at 4:13 pmP.S. I can’t find Hillary Clinton (yea vote) or Russ Feingold (nay vote) on this list. Perhaps some of it was inadvertently omitted?
October 10th, 2007 at 4:14 pmRowdy: The list is inclusive – it’s the total roll call for yeas and nays. Somehow I can’t locate Clinton or Feingold and I know they both voted.
October 10th, 2007 at 4:15 pmDavid Bonoir (my rep at the time) voted no, and they redrew the district to eliminate his seat. Candice Miller(R), a Bush sycophant now holds his former seat.
October 10th, 2007 at 4:17 pmwitch1: The media whores are pushing Hillary to the front of the line. There’s absolutely nothing the reichwingnuts would love better than for Hillary to become the “nominee” because they will swiftboat her from here to kingdom come (it’s already in the words, trust me). They know she will be an easy target to smear with her skeletons still sitting in her closet. Don’t you think that they’ve given Hillary pretty much of a “cake walk”? Doesn’t this seem highly unusual that there’s not even a whisper of scandal coming from the right? Forewarned is forearmed.
The silence of the right is deafening; it’s all synchronized to remain mute about Hillary and when/if she becomes the nominee, whammo!
Their new hate tactics will make swiftboating look like a day of waterskiing!
Beware the silence of the right. Beware the silence of the media whores. Beneath the silence is the ruminating sounds of a blood thirsty group of elite criminals – getting ready to pounce!
October 10th, 2007 at 4:19 pmWe all love and support our rep. BAGDAD JIM McDERMOTT, he got it right and the Repukian Fascist Smear Machine tried their best to destroy him, his approval rating is 84% in West Seattle.
Thank You Jim for being right and sticking to your guns.
Buck Fush
October 10th, 2007 at 4:20 pmI predict that, if Hillary becomes the nominee, she will immediately be discredited by a hate campaign the likes of which this country has never seen: 1) because she’s a woman 2) because she’s an intelligent, well-informed woman and 3) because she still has unresolved allegations and issues which can otherwise haunt, taunt, and destroy her chances of winning.
If this occurs: Enter Michael Bloomberg! It’s the same on the other side of the fence which is precisely why the two party system is antiquated and archaic. The right will run their own indpendent candidate because there’s a significant portion of registered repukes who can’t stand any of the candidates on their side right now.
This campaign season promises to be perhaps the most exciting in our lifetime. It may signal the demise of our 2 party system at last.
With 35-37% americans now registered as “Independents”, it’s clear that none of the candidates and neither party is representing them.
It will either be another Boston Tea Party (Taxation without representation) or a Three Party system on the horizon.

This is a House vote, and Clinton and Feingold are both Senators.

You said it. And, it can also be a GREAT list to use to call your Congressperson if she/he voted FOR the debacle and REMIND them of the ERROR OF THEIR WAYS!
