Former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has hired a “high-powered Washington criminal-defense lawyer” named George Terwilliger “to represent him in inquires by Congress and the Justice Department.” Their “top concern” is that DoJ Inspector General Glenn Fine may make “a criminal referral to the Public Integrity Section of the Justice Department–or even seek the appointment of a special counsel to determine if Gonzales made false statements to Congress.”

Now why is a high powered lawyer, AGAG, needing a high powered lawyer…I thought, thru media influence, that AGAG was one of the best laywers ever.
Why cannot he defend himself? Is not this his expertise?
October 10th, 2007 at 6:15 pmThis is a very big gun.
October 10th, 2007 at 6:16 pmMr. Terwilliger has represented many international and large companies facing government inquiries and in other public policy matters. He has also represented prominent individuals, including public officials and media personalities. He was a leader on the legal team that represented President Bush and Vice President Cheney in the Florida recount of the 2000 Presidential election.
Why am I not surprised…

In other words AG was not competent to be the attorney general and falls far behind the skill curve?
October 10th, 2007 at 6:19 pmI hope it bankrupts him. Financially that is, we already know he is morally bankrupt.
October 10th, 2007 at 6:20 pmFredo’s days of freedom are numbered.

To be fair to the goofball, there’s an aphorism like “he who has himself for a laywer has a fool for a client.” Only a complete and utter madman would buckle up and defend himself in a federal case.
Or cases.

Hopefully someone will do something, since Congress itself seems to have “fumbled” the ball.

So when are they charging Bush anyway?
October 10th, 2007 at 6:32 pmooh, yes, please make that cases, please.
October 10th, 2007 at 6:33 pmAs we all know, good Bushies never have to pay their own legal expenses–just ask Scooter. That horrid Mary Matalin will be out there with hat in hand, begging for shekels for Fredo’s defense fund.
Just curious about how an unemployed former federal worker can afford such a big gun.

That would sum it up. So he gets an ex-deputy attorney general with the skill sets to help him out. Meanwhile we will all watch the spectacle and take our eyes off the ball as Bush and Co. destroy the meaning of democracy.
October 10th, 2007 at 6:40 pmWhy is this crim lawyering up if he’s got nothing to hide or worry about? Getting the biggest lawyer in the bunch only means that his crimes are legion.

October 10th, 2007 at 6:43 pmMakes me wonder too.
We all know that Gonzo was worthless as AG; he was just a sycophatic arm of the GOP and his boss, Bush. He cooked the books and lied through his teeth. No one has an ounce of respect for one who should uphold the highest rule of law in the land and becomes the biggest perpetrator of wrongdoing and condoning of it.
His rep is finished and he may find himself in jail. Other than that, who gives a rip about Alberto VO5 anyway?
Intelligent people can multi-task - watch the three ring circus surrounding Gonzo, The Bonzo AND not take our focus off this amoral, highly illegal war.
October 10th, 2007 at 6:44 pmCandyce: I surely hope that Gonzo’s dinero is coming from his own coffers and not the taxpayer’s pockets! He should have plenty in his offshore accounts by now.
October 10th, 2007 at 6:45 pmMy only conclusion is that favors are being brought in because of all the huge corporate clients this guy has represented and who are big R contributors.
October 10th, 2007 at 6:45 pmMary Matalin pimping for Gonzo’s defense fund - Now those headlines would be primo!
October 10th, 2007 at 6:46 pmHopefully, Gonzo won’t have a trial by jury because I don’t think you could find a dozen people who have anything but distrust, disgust, and revulsion toward Gonzo.
October 10th, 2007 at 6:47 pmBTW- Terwillger was listed among the “Top Contenders”[3] to replace Gonzales
October 10th, 2007 at 6:47 pmTerwilliger was also in charge of all Justice Department operations, including crisis response, such as the civil unrest in Los Angeles in 1992. On policy matters, he was a principal in the highest councils of government charged with addressing the broad array of legal policy issues arising in the Executive Branch.”[1] Sourcewatch

Better yet, Freddie Thompson on the defense fund board!
October 10th, 2007 at 6:59 pmThere’s no law firm brilliant enough to get a guy off who can’t remember anything about anything. Well maybe the attorney Reagan had during Iran/Contra, who was that?
October 10th, 2007 at 7:02 pmGonzo’s lawyer goes by another name on the Simpson.
His time is Side Show Bob aka Bob Terwilliger and is criminal brother Mel Terwilliger. I just had to say that.
Now seriously Gonzales is going to need more lawyers then he can pay for. He should be sucking up to Karl
October 10th, 2007 at 7:03 pmand Cheney who buy Judges. How do you defend an
ex Attorney General who lied not once not twice but all the time while under oath. This is a dream for the
fired lawyers and a civil suit will be a slam dunk even
if the Judge is a paid Bushie.

Theodore B. “Ted” Olson, “a former solicitor general for the Bush administration who declined to say whether he has discussed the attorney general’s job with the White House or whether he would accept the post if offered”, is listed among the “Top Contenders”[1] to replace Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales,
October 10th, 2007 at 7:06 pmHe served President Ronald Reagan as Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legal Counsel from 1981 to 1984.
Who’s paying?

No problemo. It’s been a busy day watching trolls getting deleted. Teehee.
October 10th, 2007 at 7:12 pmDang, I was hoping the mastermind that got Reagan off scott free was a goner. Is Gonzo going to have to be diagnosed with Alzheimers first?
October 10th, 2007 at 7:15 pmI hope Gonzo gets the the same justice that our prisoners in the CIA black sites!

He can just say he doesn’t remember. He did that so many times.
October 11th, 2007 at 12:59 am“to determine if Gonzales made false statements”, uh, I believe we already know this one. What is it with these people, they have tape recordings of this stuff. Do they not watch the tapes of this stuff?

October 11th, 2007 at 1:31 amHeh. Sideshow George.
October 11th, 2007 at 5:26 amAlberto, I mean Fredo hasn’t done anything wrong, except politicize the Justice Department, fire those US Attorneys for political reasons, lie to Congress on numerous occasions, and be a complete diaster as Attorney General. I mean come on what has the done wrong besides write a letter authorizing our people to torture prisoners, side with the administration even when they broke the law. Al Gonezales doesn’t admit to any of the wrong doing he did, while in office. And to prove it he’s hired this jerk as his lawyer. Wait a minute, I thought Republicans didn’t like Lawyers. Oh, that’s right it depends on whether they’ve committed a crime. Because if they hadn’t, they wouldn’t need a low life Lawyer, right?
October 11th, 2007 at 7:19 amGonzo hasn’t been charged with anything but he hires a criminal defense attorney? I think he knows something. At a very minimum he should be getting prepared to defend himself in disbarment proceedings. Waiting in the wings of course is a huge pile of Rethugican money to help him defend himself against the charges that haven’t been filed. What is it about this story that just makes my head spin like a Tasmanian Devil on crack????
October 11th, 2007 at 7:35 am“Do they not watch the tapes of this stuff?”
Buck Fush
Good point, Buck. Something has been going on for some time now and it’s beyond my comprehension. Those who follow politics and seek the truth have never been fooled and thankfuly the nation seems to be slowly waking up and seeing that “the truth” is no friend to the Right. A complicite media, despite obvious indisputable evidence like audio/video tape, sworn testimony and written transcripts give equal if not more air time to the Rights seemingly indefensible excuses and outright lies under the pretense that “there are two sides to every story” evidence and truth be damned. Take as recent examples the O’Reilly and Limbaugh debacles of the past few weeks. Both swear they’ve been bum-rushed by the “loonatic left” and “taken out of context” when it’s their OWN words that have put them in such a position. When the full transcript of either of these guys rants are read, there can be NO denying the intentions of their statements but even in the face of evidence as strong as their own words, they audaciously cry foul and claim that’s not what they said. Has the world turned upside down that these liars and criminals seem to have such an easy time weaseling out of trouble created by such damning evidence as their OWN words? Fortunately their tactic of repeating the lie over and over until it’s accepted as fact is losing traction with a nation that seems to be finally seeing the wolves in sheeps clothing that the Right has been for oh so long. Progressive blogs have truth on their side and I’ll end my rant with a quote from Abraham Lincoln, “I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crises. The great point is to bring them the real facts.”
