CNN Pins Blame On Democrats For Right-Wing Smear Of 12-Year Old Boy»

This morning, CNN aired its first report on the right-wing smear campaign against 12-year old SCHIP recipient Graeme Frost. CNN pinned the blame on Democrats for assault on the Frost family.

CNN’s John Roberts reported: “Some of the accusations [against the Frosts] may be exaggerated or false. But did the Democrats make a tactical error in holding up Graeme as their poster child?” A CNN political analyst then placed the blame squarely on the Democrats’ shoulders:

I think in this instance what happened was the Democrats didn’t do as much of a vetting as they could have done on this young man, his situation, his family. […]

More and more, Congress is acting less like a deliberative legislative body, and more like a political campaign. We’ve been seeing the politicization of every aspect of government.

Watch it:

Screenshot

This isn’t mere political theatrics. You wouldn’t know it from the CNN report, but Congress did actually pass an SCHIP expansion that is overwhelmingly supported by the American public. Moreover, the Democratic-led Congress has been acting like a “legislative body,” breaking the record for the highest number of roll call votes in history.

The CNN report disturbingly suggests that Democrats are to be faulted for daring to a put a human face on the SCHIP program — a health care program for kids. Mahablog offers this explanation:

In other words, it’s the Dems fault that the Frost family is being ripped to shreds by the Right? This is like saying “it’s your fault if you lead your cow into a river full of piranha.” Yes, righties are behaving like a school of piranha, and the Dems should have known this would happen.

Another disturbing trend in the media portrayal of this story, as noted by Marcy Wheeler, is a willingness by the traditional media to place the blame on “bloggers” and politics “in the Internet age.” Right-wing bloggers were indeed leading the charge, but the entire conservative establishment — Rush Limbaugh, Senate offices, and leading conservative publications — joined in the effort.

Few journalists have yet to note that while the right-wing blogosphere attacked Graeme, it was the progressive blogosphere that led in his defense.

    CNN = Fox “News” Lite

Chetry and Roberts are both absolute fools who regularly interject their own biased opinions into the stories they report on.

Yeah, sure, it is the Dems fault the righties are batsh!t insane.
I guess it was the Dems fault the right is smearing veterans against the war as “phony soldiers” too.

Is CNN trying to project that the Dems should just stay in the corner and let the rabid righties continue to land body blows?

  4. Not the senator Says:

This is beyond the pale and reminds me of the Terry Schiavo affair and the attacks on her husband. How quickly CNN forgets.

The modern use of civilian surrogates to press political points was started by Ronald Reagan and his State of the Union guests. There are multiple examples; as mentioned, Republicans used them in the Snowflake babies, when Ashley Faulkner whose mother died in 9/11 was used in the Bush 2004 ads and the Republican advertising against Social Security used a child spokesperson.

Can you tell me where the left launched any similar investigations and personal attacks against these spokespeople? Spokespeople who were civilian non-politicians and just provided an example to humanize the issue?

You should take a look at Malkin’s refusal to debate the SCHIP issue with Ezra Klein. You can argue the issue without the personal attacks but she has absolutely no interest in doing that. That would compromise the village mob mentality that the right so carefully nurtures. This is how the Malkins, Limbaughs, O’Reillys and Becks make their living. Unfortunately, someone innocent usually pays when the mob is on the rampage.

Seems to me the family was vetted just fine. It wasn’t up to the Democrats to do the vetting, the state of Maryland did that and found the family qualified to receive S-CHIP assistance according to federal and state guidelines.

The only thing that happened here was that a family told people about their experience with the program, and for that they are being punished.

Yeah. How dare Democrats not realize that the Republicans and their cronys would stoop so low? They should have known better and not even tried to oppose them, I mean, how dare they even think about trying to do something like this rather than simply buy into Bush’s line like good politicians?

God, CNN, you disgust me. The right wing smears this family with outright lies and personal attacks and DEATH THREATS, the sane side of the blogosphere points out how baseless and stupid the lies are, the political enablers of this attack even back off on it, leaving Malkin et. al. out in the cold, and yet it’s DEMOCRATS who are to blame, because they didn’t percieve the possibility of this family being attacked for speaking up?

God, what hackery. No, it’s not even hackery at this point. Hackery at least has some kind of attempt of pretending to do your job.

It’s as if we finally recognize that the wingnuts are pure evil personified and have become beyond redemption. Therefore, it’s now the responsibility of the rest of us to stay out of their way to avoid being injured — and it’s our fault if we stray too close.

With all due respect, Daryll, I think that you are making a common mistake, and that is equating “liberals” and “Democrats”. (I, for example, am a liberal but not a Democrat. I am an unaffiliated voter.) It was the Democratic Party that decided to have young Mr. Frost give their response to the president’s weekly radio address, not all of the nation;s liberals. It was certain well-known conservatives (and not necessarily Republicans, although it may turn out they were involved) who launched the immediate smear campaign against the Frost family. (Furthermore, contrary to what this so-called CNN “expert” says, it was the right-wing critics that failed to do the proepr vetting.) My feeling is that if you attack my family, you attack me. So when the right-wing attacked the Frost family, they attacked Graeme, too. There is nothing wrong, therefore, with saying that Malkin and others attacked a 12-year-old boy. And why do these particular well-known people from the right believe that the way to win an argument is to attack the person giving it, and not the argument they are giving? How is that a legitimate form of debate?

For example, you yourself are a highly spiritual person while I am an atheist. Does that automatically mean that neither of us should ever accept that the other might be saying something truthful, even if it is unrelated to religion and spirituality, just because we feel the other is wrong about religion? The right-wing’s attack on Graeme and his family was unfounded, as has been shown by the facts they didn’t bother to investigate first. How is that possibly the fault of liberals?

More evidence that CNN is trying to outfox Faux Noose.

BTW — Rumor has it that Comcast is deleting MSNBC from its basic television cable package. Those who want to hear Keith Olbermann would have to pay extra to see him if this occurs.

And recent polls indicate that far more people in this country believe that there is a liberal than conservative bias in the mainstream news?

When a country has an autocratic leadership working in concert with the country’s news outlets, both entities could agree to promote the message that the world is flat and the majority of people in this country would believe it. The ground is being tilled in preparation for sowing the seeds of tyranny and despotism.

“It is the absolute right of the State to supervise the formation of public opinion. If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.” - Dr. Joseph Goebbels, German Minister of Propaganda, 1933-1945.

  61. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

The Republican Party and the right-wing media have a sick and twisted view of what should be considered “fair game”. I believe that this stems from their “win at all costs” mentality. On what basis did Malkin feel it appropiate to investigate the Frost family? The facts that Graeme related in the address he gave were true, and there was no reason to believe that he was not telling the truth, so why did she start with the assumption that the Frosts were lying somehow? Because some conservative blogger left a comment suggesting otherwise? And when it turned out that the blogger was wrong about his suspicions, why was it still legitimate to bring them up as “suspicions”? And what did any of that have to do with what Graeme said in his address? That’s the part I don’t understand. (And I included the Republican Party separately for Rove’s comment about Valerie Plame being “fair game”. She wasn’t, either.)

  62. Tweedster Says:

It was the dems fault. They used this family for the emotion card and political gain and did not take into account the fallout.

    Comment by Vendetta — October 11, 2007 @ 10:28 am

The fallout? You’re right, there should have been an expectation of a smear campaign by the Rightwing. It is basically the only way that they respond to political situations where they realize the unpopularity of their stance. The need to denigrate a child who has benefited from this altruistic program because the Repubs have no other sensible rebuttal should have been recognized.

Why do you give the smear tactics of the Right a free pass?

I would have no problem with Jesse’s Girl and her Hot Air machine attacking the guidelines that they apparently think are too generous.

What’s disgusting is how they’ve personalized the discussion, calling the Frosts bad parents, questioning the children’s injuries, calling them leeches on society - all based on assumptions about this family that some freeper pulled off the internet and MM’s drive-by at their home and business.

No one quite gets it. Your issue is not with the Frosts. They have done nothing illegal. In fact, they are the paradigm family that conservatives hoot about all the time - they provide for their kids, they both work hard, they are trying to get ahead, he is an entrepreneur trying to make it, they invested in a modest home for their family, they have made sure their children have access to the best schools that can address their permanent brain injuries.

But no, instead of arguing the program, they’ve attacked a family who has had more struggles to deal with than most of us ever will.

Jesse’s Girl made a point of mentioning that they have a 1-20-09 sticker on their door. I bet 1-20-09 can’t get here fast enough for the Frosts.

You add absolutely nothing to the discussion, except for your cult’s belief that “God wants all liburals dead”.
Unless you can bring some substantial intelligence to this discussion, for me, consider yourself “ignored”.

    Back on topic,
If a program that helped single mothers earn a college degree (and thus helping them to enter the working world) was successful, but was threatened to be cut, why not use a “family” as an example of it’s positive?

Only the right would feel vindicated for attacking a family for a program that was successful.
Unfortunately, the remaining consumers of this administration’s kool aid can’t bear to actually find fault with anything they do. I truly believe the left is more Christ like than the right will ever be!

That’s a first, and it bodes well for the Dems’ effort to reign in Bush’s Iraq fiasco.

Obviously, your heart is not in sync with the Holy Ghost.

For comparisons, let’s consider: the use of children in anti-abortion protests, the Jerry Lewis poster children, the use of children in advertisements, the attempted attacks on Chelsea Clinton when she was a young teen, religious groups trying to get into schools to promote their religion without the parents’ approval, the Congressional page system with or without the sexual solicitation, child labor to make your favorite sport shoes. What is exploitation of children? Does this boy’s parents’ decision to promote a program that probably saved his life qualify as abuse or exploitation? If so, charge them. Or rather, does the smear campaign attacking the family personally without considering the merits of the SCHIP program itself constitute the real abuse? You decide. I already have.

  90. justme Says:

We’ve been seeing the politicization of every aspect of government.

Excuse the %$&# out of me, but seriously, how can they say that with a straight face?

Oh, that’s right, a twelve year old publicly mentioning how he’s been helped by a government program completely outdoes anything the Republicans have done when it comes to politicizing every aspect of government. Like Lurita Doan flushing the Hatch act. Or Delay and his minions on the K Street Project forcing lobbying houses to hire only Republicans. Or maybe the firing of U.S. Attorneys for actually bringing investigations against Republicans, especially when they’re warranted. Or for not bringing frivolous suits against Democrats right at election time. Leaking critical information from the fight against Al Quaeda for political gain? Repeatedly? How about potentially killing ten times the number of New Yorkers the terrorist did on 9/11 by forcing the EPA to lie and tell everybody it was perfectly safe to breath? Cronyism and Katrina, anybody? The “Help America Vote” act and unverifiable elections? John Stinkin’ Bolton? Ken Blackwell? Duke Cunningham? Well, okay, Cunningham is just a crook.

    Come. On.

Politicizing every square inch of government under their purview is what Republicans do. It’s the only way they’ve been able to weasel their way into power. For them to complain about it, even if it were the case would be, um, disingenuous, to be polite.

Merely having a spokesperson for a program can hardly be considered politicizing government. Yeesh. These “reporters” really should start wearing big red nose balls and floppy shoes just to make sure nobody confuses them with anybody worth listening to.

In other words, they don’t want to present the facts but instead engage in theatrics and drama. They want conflict. When one side is factually wrong as the Limbaughs and his right wing lunatics are here, John Roberts will never say that. He prefers not to alientate one side in the debate but instead to present every debate in a way where he suggests both sides are right and no side is wrong. The government caused the problem with health care in America by over socializing medicine to the extent it is not completive, and we want to exacerbate the problem? Kids have health care. No one is entitled to be given a house, car, food or health care, etc. If we want these things, we have to earn them. The government does not earn money. Perhaps some of us should take a civics class and learn about America. We all have to labor for what we want. For those who need help there are the charities and state programs. We need to fix the health care issue but we cannot fix it unless we know how it is broken. For the answer, please see http://www.InteliOrg.com/

That’s crap! It’s just an excuse to increase medical insurance profits so they can overcharge doctors and not have to pay out more benefits.

Most lawsuits are between corporations, not ‘tort’ cases - that’s a red herring! The number of cases has not been going up, what would have needed to occur to achieve the results you describe. Also, unless the doctors are breaking the law, they wouldn’t lose cases anyway - or had you missed that point? Sounds more like what we need is DOCTOR’S STANDARDS OF CARE REFORM?

You talking about the economic system, or single payer healthcare? Because single payer healthcare works better in every developed nation (they ALL have it) than our system does! What’s been proven to not work is OUR SYSTEM! We pay twice as much per capita as any other developed nation and 50 million uninsured, and 18,000 deaths a year from ‘healthcare rationing’ brought on by people not being able to afford it! That’s the SMEAR. They were turned down by 3 insurance companies because of pre-existing conditions - that’s exactly what SCHIP is designed to help with! Not only the high price of insurance, but the fact that insurance companies aren’t required to offer it, or give a good rate to people if they don’t want to!

If you want to obfuscate the argument by throwing around silly accusations, fine. Comment by frankoharris — October 11, 2007 @ 4:15 pm

Like what you just did? Pure projection.

You deserve to be forced into third-rate healthcare by an already bloated and inefficient federal government while you sit around and avoid the real argument by tossing around partisan insults. Comment by frankoharris — October 11, 2007 @ 4:15 pm

As opposed to the already bloated third-rate insurance run healthcare we have that puts us in line with CUBA instead of the first world?

You wingnuts are insane liars, period!

There are several reasons that healthcare is irrationally expensive. One major reason is lawsuits and medical liability insurance.

    Comment by frankoharris — October 11, 2007 @ 4:33 pm

Bullshit. A 10 minute ultrasound procedure on my gallbladder 5 years ago cost over $600. Are you going to blame that on all the lawsuits against specialists who administer them? Got any proof?

Chetry and Roberts are spys for Fake News. The are nothing more than butt kissing idiots who favor Republicans. I’m going to stop watching CNN now because they are too closely aligned with Fake News. The next thing you know Bill Orally will be on CNN. CNN stand for Chickens Nothing Now. Meaning that they are so scared of Fake News, they can’t tell the truth about Bush or anything else.

Wolf Biltzer is a COWARD who kisses up to Fake News too. Now all of the anchors are falling over themselves to try to please Repubicans. What these idiots don’t realize is the weak Democrats are about to win the the Presidency in spite of CNN and Fox’s attempt to elect Rudy (COWARD) JulieAnnE. I spell it that way because he dresses in women’s clothing.

#81: “Notice that libs don’t attack the children that Pres. Bush “used” in his pathetic “snowflake baby” propoganda, but that right-whiiners are more than happy to atttack anyone”

Actually, libs did attack the donors and recipients of the Snowflake babies, and the Bush Administration for favoring the program, as can readily be found by Googling “snowflakes bush” (no quotes).

See for example “Bush’s Snowflake adoption program discriminates on basis of religion, sexual orientation” at americablog; “Bush Snubs Science in Deference to Snowflakes” at huffingtonpost; and “Sight Of Bush With Snowflake Babies Makes Time Columnist [Joe Klein] ‘Want To Throw Up’ ” as Klein was quoted on the Chris Matthews Show.

Strictly speaking, I don’t think anyone was directly attacking the Snowflake babies, but I also don’t think anyone has directly attacked Graeme Frost; they’ve attacked his parents and the politicians who used him.

But at any rate, attacking a 12-year-old who’s made a political speech would not be quite the same thing as attacking a pre-schooler for appearing in a photo-op.

But did the Democrats attack the parents of the snowflake babies and accuse them of not deserving their children? Did leftwing bloggers make the effort to go to the homes of the snowflake babies to make sure they were being treated well, were being fed and clothed well, and not being abused? Did liberal radio hosts accuse Republicans of putting lies into the heads of the snowflake children? No? Didn’t think so.

  137. Bad Eye Says:

See for example “Bush’s Snowflake adoption program discriminates on basis of religion, sexual orientation.”

And you don’t have a problem with that? How is that attacking the children or the parents? I read the Americablog article, and nowhere do I find an attack on the parents or donors. I do find legitimate questions on the program being discriminatory.

  138. RightOfAttila Says:

Jesus commanded we give free healthcare - why is the GOP so ANTI-CHRISTIAN?

    Matthew 10:8
“Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.”

    Comment by republicans hate facts — October 11, 2007 @ 3:23 pm

Being forced by the govt. to pay higher taxes under threat of tax evasion and jail time is not “free giving”. To give freely requires a voluntary act. Taxes are not given freely - they are forced upon the people. The GOP is not anti-christian. Which party is striving to remove “God” from the pledge of allegiance? I think you’ve got the wrong party.
