Petraeus for the Nobel Prize?

By Satyam on Oct 11th, 2007 at 3:16 pm

Petraeus for the Nobel Prize?»

The New York Sun editorializes that Gen. David Petraeus be nominated for Nobel Peace Prize for his attempts to “save the nation of Iraq”:

petraeusmil23.JPGWe advance the name of General Petraeus this year because he has come to personify the GI Joes and GI Janes of whom he is in command. He has breasted an extraordinary amount of obloquy on behalf of their, and our country’s, cause and courage. This was put into sharp relief during his appearance last month before the Congress, where his honor and patriotism were questioned. […]

General Petraeus is just trying to save the nation of Iraq from the competing death cults of fanatical Shiism and fanatical Sunnism. He has already achieved something that had eluded his predecessors in command — he’s winning a war against Al Qaeda, working with local tribes toward preventing a confessional civil war from escalating and protecting whole neighborhoods in Baghdad from ethnic cleansers.

In September, the Sun wrote an editorial pushing Petraeus for President.

    Petraeus for God!

Someone please tell me how someone who is part of a campaign that has resulted in the deaths of a million of the very civilians that he’s supposed to be ’saving’ can possibly be even considered for a Nobel Peace Prize by even an organization as delusional as the Sun?

  2. profmarcus Says:

oh, yeah, just what we need… an alternative proposal is that petraeus be nominated for the nobel prize for advanced political propaganda…

And, yes, I DO take it personally

  3. rastaman Says:

THE NEW YORK SUN LEGITIMIZES THEIR OWN ILLEGITIMACY…

THIS PROPAGANDIST RAG WILL BE HELD UP TO THE LIGHT OF DEMOCRACY IN THE FUTURE AS AN EXAMPLE OF THE MADNESS THAT WAS THE ATTEMPTED FASCIST TAKEOVER OF BUSH ET AL.

    President, Peace Prize Winner, Jesus

Dude has a lot of titles.

A war monger cannot get a PEACE prize!!! War is NOT peace!!

  7. And Yet... Says:

The medium is the message. And the bullshit medium is the bullshit message, as in this NY Sun pronouncement.

  8. GregM Says:

There’s nothing peaceful about Betrayus. If it’s the Nobel Warmonger Prize
then he’d be a sure winner.

  9. fletc3her Says:

That’s plus-good doublethink if I ever saw it!

  10. tom Says:

Well, Patreaus won’t get the Nobel Prize in Science because he has trouble with his fuzzy math. And he won’t get the Nobel Prize in Physics because he doesn’t know that politics and military activities don’t mix.

I guess that all that leaves is the Peace Prize.

  11. Krazny Says:

The Nobel prizes are handed out by a panel of distinguished people. Not the New York Sun.

  12. Clyde the Ripper Says:

He will get the Nobel prize the day after King George the Dumb is selected supreme leader of Mensa.

  13. Max-1 Says:

    .

A Peace Prize for the General of a combat objective lacking a Peace Keeping Mission?

    .

  14. Arne Langsetmo Says:

The N.Y Sun is ineligible to nominate Petraeus.

    Fortunately.

Maybe they can put him up for the related Ig Nobel peace prize.

    Cheers,

  15. dim wit Says:

How to win a Nobel Peace Prize:
    1) Invade sovereign country based on misinformation
    2) Fu(k up sovereign country
    3) Have boss say “Mission Accomplished”
    4) Ignore problem for a couple years
    5) Attempt to solve problem by throwing money at problem. Kill sovereign country’s civilians (attain help from “private security firm” if needed)
    6) Accept Peace Prize
    7) Pat self on back

  16. toasterhead Says:

He has already achieved something that had eluded his predecessors in command — he’s winning a war against Al Qaeda

What? No, no he’s not. Al-Qa’ida needs to be in Iraq in order to be defeatable.

That’s like beating a Rolling Stones tribute band in a talent contest and saying your band defeated the Rolling Stones.

  17. Frosty Cupcake Says:

Rowdy: “A war monger cannot get a PEACE prize!!! War is NOT peace!!”

Didn’t you get the GWB memo? War is peace, incompetence is expertise and lies are truth.

  18. lefty Says:

As a New Yorker I can say that I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone reading the New York Sun. So… whatever.

dim wit: I always love your posts.

  20. mark Says:

Can we nominate him for deus ex machina too?

  21. upside99 Says:

And his prize will be 1,000 pounds of Mr. Nobel’s very old, very unstable dynamite, stuffed in his tighty whities.

  22. missmolly Says:

Anybody can nominate anybody for the Nobel Peace Prize. Heck, I remember one year when some bozo even nominated Rush Limbaugh. This doesn’t mean the nominee will get the award, or even have a fighting chance for it.

The panel making the decision as to who gets the award takes their job very seriously. Promoting peace is a primary consideration, and those who “promote peace” by waging war are discounted pretty early in the process. I would bet that anybody connected with our occupation in a country we invaded for no good reason will not be selected for the prize.

  23. celtic cynic Says:

    “obloquy” WTF?

  24. upside99 Says:

I notice that they did not mention that he LOST all those weapons?

There are other things as well, but this alone should be enough.

And he was in charge of training all those Iraqi policemen in 18 months (About 16 of them, if we count some of them twice).

  25. republicans hate facts Says:

In the world of the twisted GOP, war is peace, so why wouldn’t someone that makes war get a peace prize? The GOP needs a giant couch, and continent’s worth of MEDS!

    No. See my link above.

  27. Jackie Says:

Good to hear the Nobel Peace Prize voters got a good laugh at the Petraeus nomination. Let’s see General Petraeus came in charge after many others stopped following Bush orders. Petraeus lost or sold 190,000 weapons/vest/bullets as there now in the hands of the enemy, gave a speech under oath written by they White House. Oh yes the letter to a Saddam spy for the United States who gave information from the top ranks of Saddam’s army and was told by Petraeus in letter form that he would not face charges and he could come home with the full protection of himself and the United States of America for a job well done.
Now this Saddam spy for the US will be put to death.
So much for the word of the US and General Petraeus. Oh and today’s news of the Marines who want to come home.

Yes what a great guy to give the Nobel Peace Prize to.
He’s done nothing be what he’s told by the criminal White House and agrees to torture of woman and children. Looks like the trash basket has some paper in it.

Isn’t the Sun’s editorial board funded by the Cheeney Whitehouse???

  32. Starve-A-Bush_Feed-A-Beaver Says:

Yes, he should receive the “shock and awe” version of the Nobel Peace Prize. Those 600,000 dead Iraqis certainly are at peace, you have to admit.

    Comment by Arne Langsetmo — October 11, 2007 @ 3:50 pm

You’re right — I stand corrected. I should have just stuck with “anybody can be nominated”.

This renders the Sun pitch as even MORE irrelevant — if that’s possible.

  34. cha cha cha Says:

    “David H. Petraeus

BAGHDAD — Helping organize, train and equip nearly a quarter-million of Iraq’s security forces is a daunting task…Nonetheless, there are reasons for optimism. Today approximately 164,000 Iraqi police and soldiers (of which about 100,000 are trained and equipped)”

i would like to retroactively nominate him for the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize. (is there a Nobel Prize for Made-Up or B.S. Statistics?)

  35. Willy Says:

Wonderful! Let’s nominate a war-monger for the Nobel Peace Prize.

    Typical right-wing logic.

  36. OxyCon Says:

Is the Sun accredited to nominate someone for a Nobel Prize?
If not, then their nomination doesn’t mean squat.

I second that. AM NY/Metro… yup
    NY Times…. check
    Daily News….check
Hell even the NY Post, but I have honestly seen more people on the subway reading Korean newspapers than the NY Sun.

  49. bilbobaggins Says:

Wow, that’s the biggest bunch of hooey I have read in a long time.

General Petraeus is just trying to save the nation of Iraq from the competing death cults of fanatical Shiism and fanatical Sunnism.

Betrayus is trying to save Iraq from the terror we unleashed upon that nation? How is he doing that? All he seems to be doing is killing Iraqi’s and getting our soldiers killed.

The Right is just about apoplectic right now because there’s a very good chance that Al Gore is going to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. I will happily watch to see their heads explode if that happens.

  50. nanlichi Says:

It was just a typo, he was nominated for the Noble Prize, for the Nobleman who does the most heroic effort to cover the inbred POS King’s back. Keep the serfs down, taxes up….

    Like the Sheriff of Nottingham.

  51. WaltTheMan Says:

I figure that Petraeus is behind Hitler and Stalin, but ahead of GWB and Deadeye in the Nobel Peace Prize polls.

  52. WaltTheMan Says:

    Hi all.

  53. moondancer Says:

I nominate the Arabs in Darfur. By slaughtering tens of thousands, they actually are easing starvation for the survivors.

  54. drtichy Says:

    Peace Prize? Must be kidding!
Isn’t he (Petraeus) part of the gang responsible for almost 4,000 American casualties and over 50,000 wounded?
By the way, I think that each soldier who returns wounded from the war should go first to the White House, to take a picture with George Bush and Cheney.
Those pictures should be exposed in the Oval Office and in the VP’s office, to daily remind the gang of how many people were killed because of their “special interests.”

  55. RUCerious Says:

… Huh … so the National Enquirer changed it’s name to the New York Sun…

  58. RioRico Says:

    PRIZE FOR SUBTLE CONGRESS INSTEAD
I’ve seen nothing here so far about the bipartisan Congressional resolution condemning Ottoman Turkish genocide of Armenians. Turkey has already recalled their ambassador to the US. Turkey just MIGHT shut down the US logistics route to Iraq. Most supplies heading into Iraq are hauled through Turkey. Ruining US-Turkey relations and shutting down that supply route will be a subtle and effective way of starving the US military machine and ending the occupation, eh?

  59. cd Says:

Big shock that fox started talking about this not long after.

They are both after all controled by Murduch.
