Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) said, “President Bush and the Republicans should lay off Graeme Frost and all the other children who are getting health care.” She added, “I thought I’d seen the depth of political partisanship and mean spiritedness but the Republicans and their right wing allies have really taken the cake this time.”

A poll done for Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) “found that 70 percent of registered voters think President Bush’s $200 billion Iraq war supplemental spending request should be rejected or conditioned on redeployment.”

“The Marine Corps is pressing to remove its forces from Iraq and to send marines instead to Afghanistan, to take over the leading role in combat there, according to senior military and Pentagon officials.”

In a transcript released yesterday, GOP lawyer Jill Simpson divulged more details about her claim that Karl Rove pushed the Justice Department to bring corruption charges against former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman (D). Simpson recalled how Rob Riley, current Gov. Bob Riley’s (R) son, boasted of a plan to “hang Don Siegelman.”

The United Nations urged U.S. authorities to establish mechanisms to hold security contractors accountable “for unjustified killings and to ensure that offenses committed in Iraq ‘by all categories of U.S. contractor employees’ are subject to prosecution.”

The AP reports that the State Department “may phase out or limit the use of private security guards in Iraq, which could mean canceling Blackwater USA’s contract or awarding it to another company in line with an Iraqi government demand.”

Because of “lengthy and repeated war-zone tours,” the Army is facing a “projected shortfall of about 3,000 captains and majors for every year through 2013.” In an “unprecedented bid to forestall” this “critical shortage of officer ranks,” the Army is “offering cash bonuses of up to $35,000 to retain young officers.”

A new study finds that the “amount of moisture in the air near Earth’s surface rose 2.2 percent in less than three decades.” Researchers note that this increase in humidity bears the “man-made fingerprint of global warming.”

And finally: “Staffers at the Senate Press Gallery have been noticing heavy usage on one of their printers in recent weeks and set out to find out why.” Launching a “quiet investigation,” one staffer “discovered a suspicious file in the computer and printed it out.” The file turned out to be “page after page from the Daily Racing Form.” Staffers suspect either “someone from the cleaning crew or a reporter staying late at night.”

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

You can bet that if the State Department phases out Blackwater, they will attempt to do so as quietly as possible. Blackwater has become an embarrassment to them — both in Iraq and with the American public here. They’ve got a bit of a problem, since they seem to be quite allergic to doing anything that suggests they might have made a mistake.

  2. VerbalKint Says:

Blackwater isn’t going anywhere. That isn’t how the Bush administration does things. At most they will be re-branded with a different name. It will be the same people and the same b*llsh*t.

  3. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

And what’s to stop Erik Prince from starting a whole new company called “Backwalter” whose employees are all former Blackwater people?

If we cut our contract with Blackwater, we will probably have to pay our military Blackwater rates just to get the personnel we need to continue this idiocy.

When oh when will our IIC admit that if we are to continue invading and occupying other countries, we need to reinstate the draft?

The United States ranks 14th on the 2007 Commitment to Development Index. Although some of our trade and FDI policies help developing countries, these positives are far outweighed by our collective environmental damage, low and restricted foreign aid outlays, and refusal to commit to the Kyoto Protocol.

If the Washington press corps is unable to fact-check the many lies coming out of the Bush administration (literally from day one with the false allegations of wide-spread vandalism), then I doubt they could be much help in tracking fown those responsible for this (even if it was one of them).

I suspect it’s a reporter. We all know how obsessed the Washington press corps is with the horserace of campaign politics.

  14. missmolly Says:

What the wingnuts have done to the Frost family is unconscionable. They like to use the word “slander” like a comma (and almost always incorrectly) in their rantings when complaining about “the evil libruls”, but in this case they have produced a case of their own where the word “slander” is appropriate.

What, exactly, has the Frost family done to deserve having their address made public? Their eligibility for SCHIP being challenged? Being publicly accused of fraud? And generally vilified by the right? Let’s see — apparently two children who are eligible for SCHIP got in an auto accident, required a great deal of expensive medical care, and the family praised the SCHIP program for helping them. I guess in the eyes of the right, if you get a helping hand of any kind, you should keep your mouth shut or face the consequences.

First, the wingnuts accused the SCHIP supporters of exploiting children to make political points (never mind that they do it, too). When that fell flat, they decided to ruin the lives of the Frost family. To accomplish what, exactly? Even IF they were to successfully expose the Frost family as crooks and frauds (which they didn’t, by the way), was this supposed to mean that there were no people in the country eligible for SCHIP, and so the program shouldn’t be funded? What kind of logic are they going for here?

No — the only reason for attempting to destroy the Frost family was just plain mean-spiritedness. Malkin and all her ilk should be ashamed, and hopefully the American public can see these petty rats for what they are.

And once again, the Dems begin their rolling-over trick to give Bush what he wants. This time, on the FISA bill. Of course, what they should do is simply let the changes made in August expire in Feb.

“Bush and other administration officials have signaled they will reject legislation that does not include legal immunity for the telecom firms, many of which face lawsuits for helping to conduct domestic surveillance after the Sept. 11 attacks. Telecom firms are lobbying forcefully behind the scenes for such a provision, which was not included in the temporary law passed earlier this year.

House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.) has signaled that Democrats may be willing to negotiate on the immunity issue if the administration tells Congress more about the nature of, and legal justification for, its post-9/11 surveillance activities.”

Bush is NOT going to give up his private army. He will need them to protect him from a military coup when he declares martial law and cancels the election. I am frankly mystified at why the Congress is ignoring the Presidential Order he signed giving himself the ability to declare martial law. Actually, I a mystified at Congress allowing him to do half the things that he has done. I am very afraid that the Democrats really do want the kind of powers that Bush has bestowed on himself. It would be interesting, though, to see the Republicans reaction when a Democratic president used the powers Bush has bestowed upon himself. They can hardly complain since Bush is the one who set the precedent. But, I am sure they will find some illogical reason to complain.

  19. Veritas Says:

You know Eric Prince is getting his payback for the hundreds of thousands of dollars he pumped into GOP campaigns. As well, his sister (DeVos?) was the Michigan State Rethug Chair - give me a break here. Blackwater with it “no bid contract” is no different than Cheney’s Haliburton No Bid “Contract - both thugs making big money off the american taxpayer!

When will the people wake up and realize that they’re footing the bill for these charades. When will the people reinstate our own rule of law which states that the “one hiring the hitman is equally guilty as the one pulling the trigger”??

Bremer pulled a swift one on us and the Iraqis by providing “immunity” for the crimes of Blackwater - something which was craftily slipped under the rug on all of us. It’s time to reverse this and hold Blackwater totally responsible under the law for any/all crimes they’ve committed.

I’ve read that a 10 year old boy was involved in this last horrendous melee and an eyewitness mentioned seeing his mother dragging his limp body from the scene. In addition to the murdered, there were 24 injured. The full report notes a Blackwater helicopter summoned to the scene who just shot indiscriminately into the Square. This is disgusting!

Unfortunately for this country, well-known people on the right (Malkin, Limbaugh, Hannity, O’Reilly, etc.) believe that it is a perfectly legitimate tactic in any debate on any issue to attack the personal integrity of the person making the argument, rather than attacking the argument itself on its merits. They know that if they have a valid argument to make, based on facts and not ideology, that they are right, they could use it. But when they don’t have any valid arguments, they feel that they have “won” the debate if they can smear the integrity of the person who beat them. (BTW, for all those who don’t think Malin attacked Graeme, ask yourself this: Would you consider an attack on your family to be an attack on you personally? If so, then you have to agree that Malkin attacked Graeme.)

To the right-wing extremists like Malkin (et al), being right is not the important thing, winning is. And that is why they are immoral.

  26. nanlichi Says:

What would be the cost of Bush’s War if you added in his mercenaries? What would be the death and maimed total? What a sick and evil little man Bush is, even if he is only following orders. A decent human would stand up to the Dick.

But Bush and the right wing pukes are so far past decency as a standard. Just when you think they couldn’t sink deeper into the sludge, they slime a 12 year old who dares speak up.

  27. Briseadh na Faire Says:

“President Bush and the Republicans should lay off Graeme Frost …”

But it is important that Reich-wingers come down swift and hard on this 12 year-old so as to teach all children that they should never speak out against the President.

What better way to achieve a compliant citizenry then to intimidate children into submission?

  28. Veritas Says:

Bilbo: I agree that Bush should have great trepidation about a military coup with all that he’s done to infuriate the people of this country as well as most of the world powers.

I would also tend to agree with you that there is no “other” reason for the Dems in Congress to be acting as overtly complicit as they have been and permitted this heinous abuse of power. Do they intend to continue it?

It reminds me of England during the reign of Henry VIII’s successors. During Mary (Bloody Mary’s) reign, the country was turned back to Catholicism and the non-catholics were persecuted, beheaded and burned at the stake - in Elizabeth’s reign, the “ins” became the “outs” and the same MO was perpetuated upon them.

I see this as a direct comparison to what may be occurring right now in our government. Woe to the Republicans if this is true and a Dem wins the White House in 08 - which is a foregone conclusion right now, despite any tampering with voting machines which may be planned right now.

Woe to the Repukes if the Dems continue this power grap and spree for they will be the ones running into exile immediately upon the transfer of power.

Woe to the Republicans if this is true and a Dem wins the White House in 08 - which is a foregone conclusion right now, despite any tampering with voting machines which may be planned right now.

If the Democrats allow the Republicans to steal another election by tampering with voting machines, then they deserve to lose. I’m fairly sure that won’t happen for two reasons. The first is that the Republicans can’t fudge by more than 4%, otherwise it will be very apparent that they have tampered with the machines. That’s what happened in 2006. They fudged by 4% but the Democrats turned out in droves and their numbers were 6-8% higher, so the 4% wasn’t enough for a win. I often wonder how many more Democrats we would have in Congress if they hadn’t fudged by the 4%. The second reason why I don’t think they will be tampering again is that the Democrats are on to them and their methods. Also, there are Democratic Secretary of States in many of the swing states this time so there won’t be the opportunity to mess with the voting machines that there was with all the Republican Secretaries of State like Ken Blackman. The Republicans know their goose is cooked and will be well served not to try and steal another election. Because if they do try, the will be called out this time. I doubt any Democratic candidate this time would go silently into the night and not protest.

All it takes is for people to be suspicious about ANYTHING coming to them via registered or certified mail requiring their signature. If even a small handful of people report suspicious registered mail in a caging area, it should be enough to trigger an investigation.

We must continue to publicize the mechanics of voter caging so victims will recognize when they are being targeted.

Nanlichi - I’d love to have your optimism about martial law but can you really put anything past this overreaching group of gangsters? This is what is giving the 911 truth movement more traction - we, as americans, have been brainwashed to believe that our government is looking out for our best interests. With this crime cabal, nothing could be further from the truth.

This is why logical people who have been keeping track of the criminal activities of this administration realize that staging or abetting others (hired mercenaries??? Seems to be the MO of this administration so why discount that possibility?)…..to launch the worst attack on american soil to begin the coup on our democracy? After all, PNAC - along with Bush 41, Cheney, & Rummy have had this in the works for decades.

  72. Veritas Says:

We may discover that the genesis of the dot-connecting is not the attack on Iraq but the pivotal point and intersection of everything criminal goes back to 911.

    Got proof of that?
Because Rush has just been digging his hole deeper.

Afghanistan has been the forgotten battle but is a much more critical theater. I hope the Pentagon can see the wisdom of what the Marines are requesting.

he just told a story about sen. kennedy’s email being hacked into,
by some guy who worked for another senator - I MISSED THE NAME…

the dems were confounded by the way the repugs seemed to be a step ahead whenever they tried to put legislation out… then the dems figured out that kennedy’s email was being read by this guy… WHO?

evidently this guy quit, but there was no action taken…
apologies and move on… this was some years ago…

  79. nanlichi Says:

    Veritas,

I think you give them too much credit. Look at the sheer incompetency of this cabal. OBL had had his eye on the towers for a long time, it just took the incompetent and lazy ass Bush to take his eye off the ball long enough to get it done. The plan itself wasn’t even that difficult.

The right wing freaks did a great job of exploiting the disaster after it had happened though. They used the cover of 9/11 to jam their plans up America’s ass. Bush’s War never had anything to do with 9/11.

But if you are right about the martial law, “they have the guns but we have the numbers.”

And some of us have a few guns too.

Hmmmm. So the math tells me that dittoheads never learn? Or that they can’t read a simple transcript? Or perhaps that they get all their “information” from Rush?

    Huh. Good point.

  83. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

Millions of people can and often have been wrong. Having a large audience for your personal views does not automatically validate the comments being made. It might make you feel personally validated to have such a well-known figure agree with you, but that doesn’t mean either one of you is right. Rush Limbaugh has a well-documented history of getting the facts wrong, and this dates back to well before Media Matters came along.

Was Rush right when he went on the air to annouce that Vine Foster had been murdered in an apartment owned by Hillary Clinton? No. Does the fact that he had millions of people listening to him tell that lie make it any more true? No.

Veritas, the very idea that any of our leaders could have been responsible for the carnage on 9/11 is such an awful scenario that I admit I have resisted allowing myself to think that such a horrible thing would be possible.

But you must admit, whether the Bushney machine had anything to do with it or not — it was very convenient, wasn’t it? Even more convenient was Giuliani ordering all the debris hauled away and destroyed before any investigation could be done into the possibility of the scenario being anything other than what it appeared.

9/11 catapulted Bush’s favorability ratings into the stratosphere, it allowed for a compliant Congress to pretty much give Bush a blank check to do anything he wanted (like invade Iraq), and gave the neocons a mechanism to keep Americans in a state of fear. A perfect fit for the neocon vision. A little TOO perfect. No wonder some people smell something rotten here.

  86. Candyce Says:

missmolly - I consistently reject the conspiratorial aspect of the story, but sometimes it’s just damned hard. I know rationally that coincidences occur. Sometimes there are just so many coincidences here, I have to fight with myself. The latest is what we learned about Cheney this week, wherein:

Cheney was looking for a moment to “seize” power in the weeks before 9/11:

We are going to expand presidential power in any way we can. This was discussed in January 2001 at the first meeting of the White House legal team after the inauguration, long before 9/11. If an opportunity arises to expand presidential prerogatives, you will seize it.

Rather than believe that the administration was pro-active in 9-11, I believe they were inactive, waiting for that opportunity. It’s hard to understand why they ignored the warnings and “let” it happen unless you think they wanted something to happen that would give them the excuses to expand the executive. And that’s what I believe. I think 9-11 was bigger than anything they hoped for, but they were happy to exploit it for Cheney’s 30-yr-old plan to elevate the executive. Remember, when Bush was looking for a Veep he went to Cheney for advice on a candidate, and lo and behold, Cheney chose himself. he positioned himself nicely to take advantage of whatever opportunities might come along.

Firstly, why was Cheney consulted over the choice of a VP, if he wasn’t somehow in charge of matters, or at least the representative of those who were?

Secondly, I believe Cheney saw what a bumbling buffoon Bush is, and decided he needed to be close at hand.

Harry Reid made millionaries very happy . Thet get to to keep their billions or millions . Reid was supposed to pass legislation to make the equity fund managers pay more taxes . Right now I make $40, 0000 a year taxed at about 27% to 35% . Equity fund managers make $8,000,000 a year and pay 15% in taxes .He promised to change that , but that was before the lobbyist converged on capital hill and gave Mr. (sell out ) Reid campagin
money and pressured him to turn a blind eye to the fact that regular americas’ pay more 27%-35% in taxes then corporationswho now pay 16% (who use to pay 35%of all taxes but that was before Bush corprate welfare. ) Mr Reid took their money and told them dont worry that bill wont see daylight in 2007/2008. I have a problem with this . I called and told his DC office all this and the guy told me start a petition .
So lets see campagin donations from lobbyist for thousands or millions of $$$ versus my petition .

    You Decide !!!!!!!!

Well, after much thought, I think that’s exactly what happened re: 9/11. Not only did it open the door for an expanded executive, it pretty much guaranteed Bush a second term to give him enough time to screw everything up. Other than tax cuts, I don’t think he’d have had any major accomplishments under his belt that would have convinced America that he deserved 4 more years.
