Earlier today, after Al Gore was named a co-winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, Fox News kicked off the right-wing smear attacks on the former Vice President, comparing him to “Yasser Arafat and that crazy Jimmy Carter.”
But the cable network’s efforts to undermine Gore’s message and achievments began long ago. Yesterday, after suggesting that Gore has never “actually done something for peace,” Fox ran a chyron advocating that a different American be awarded the peace prize: Gen. David Petraeus.
In the segment, Neil Cavuto hosted New York Sun editor Seth Lipsky, whose paper ran an editorial this week saying that Petraeus deserved the prize for his attempts to “save the nation of Iraq.” Lipsky said that Petraeus “deserves” the award “as a representative of G.I. Joe” because American troops “go overseas to liberate, they go overseas to make peace.” He then added that the use of “fighting” in a war doesn’t undermine the “idealism” of the Nobel Prize:
LIPSKY: I can’t think of anything more directly responsive to the idealism of the Nobel Peace Prize itself than the kinds of liberation and peacekeeping that our G.I. Joe and G.I. Jane has had as a mission since World War II.
CAVUTO: So, you say Gen. Petraeus, not Al Gore?
LIPSKY: I say Gen. Petraeus, not Al Gore.
Watch it:
When Alfred Nobel established the Peace Prize in his will, he specifically outlined the criteria by which the recipient should be chosen:
The prize for peace was to be awarded to the person who “shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding of peace congresses.”
Petraeus is the architect of Bush’s surge, a plan that has increased the number of forces in Iraq.
So to recap: Alfred Nobel’s definition of peace: reduction of standing armies. Fox News’ definition of peace: war without end.
(HT: Newshounds)
UPDATE: In an interview at Science Progress, Joe Romm explains how Gore’s environmental work is directly related to peace and security issues.
I wish I were a billionaire like Ted Turner, so I would start an all progressive news channel to counter this crap. Also, during the graveyard shifts, I’d have shows about lumberjacks in plaid shirts.

October 12th, 2007 at 3:55 pmAll General Betray-us has done is kiss Bush’s a$$ and cook the books! How does this fool deserve anything but a swift boot in the derriere.
If the apes on Faux News can’t see that uniting the world for a common threat means world peace, then they don’t deserve to even be on the air.
October 12th, 2007 at 3:56 pmOnce people unite, the concept of killing each other is not a possibility. This is so far above the heads of the white house and Fox News that it’s comical.
October 12th, 2007 at 3:57 pmI doubt seriously that the Nobel committee gives a flying whoop what Fox News thinks. Furthermore, they would find the idea of giving the Peace Prize to a man who designed a surge of violence somewhat against their principles (not to mention laughable).
Brickbats to Fox News for attempting to politicize Nobel Prizes.
October 12th, 2007 at 3:57 pmboo hoo de do hoo…conservowhining is reaching a new pitch
October 12th, 2007 at 3:57 pmPredictably, the conservative chattering class and its amen corner in the right-wing blogosphere are apoplectic about the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Al Gore. But their rage and angst about the Nobel Committee’s “politicized awards” for “mass exaggerators” and “deceptive rhetoric” isn’t merely a function of the inconvenient truth of the success of Gore’s global warming campaign. No, the rugged individualists of the right are just hopping mad that they never win prizes designed to recognize contributions to, well, the rest of humanity.
To remedy this perpetual slight, then, here are:
October 12th, 2007 at 3:58 pm“Conservative Nobel Prizes We’d Like to See.”
Global warming can unite this country much the same as 911 did – until Bush actively chose to use it for diabolical purposes. It was obvious to the rest of the world that he was lying and using the positive energy for evil that it will take a global problem like this to ever unite anyone with us on this planet for a long time.

October 12th, 2007 at 4:00 pmThe sad thing about this is that I live in Provo, UT. And a lot of people around here actually get their information from Fox News. The message that particular network endorses is so destructive to humanity. It is really hard for me to believe that someone would think that a military leader should get the nobel peace prize and even worse, someone would give that person airtime. I am a bit sick to my stomach right now.

October 12th, 2007 at 4:03 pmDidn’t Petraeus also undermine peace when he was in charge of the 250,000-or-so weapons that disappeared? You know, the ones sectarian death squads are using to kill innocent civilians?
And wasn’t he also the author the military counter-insurgency manual? You know, the one filled with concepts that failed so miserably for five years and led to the deaths of tens of thousands of people?
I guess those are just more pesky facts the right is willing to ignore.

October 12th, 2007 at 4:31 pmOr are you just being a typical spittle-dribbling Rethug?
I agree, Betrayus has done a great job bring saving the nation of Iraq. First he loosed 100,000 weapons on the country, probably in the hands of the insurgents, then he so successfully trained all those Iraqi police, and finally he brought another 30,000 Americans into Iraq to further the occupation. I’m sure the Iraqi’s are so thankful that they have General Betrayus.
It’s pretty sad that the Right has to put forth a war-mongering, ideologically driven General as their version of someone who fosters peace in this world.
But, then, for the Republicans up is down, black is white and war is peace.
I do admit that I am enjoying watching them go apoplectic. It’s really quite amusing.

So rather than doing any research you come to TP and ask us what criteria was used? If you were truly interested in the criteria, you would seek out the information for yourself. You wouldn’t come to a progessive blog and ask us. So because you asked us, I believe you really don’t care what the criteria was used to choose Mr. Gore – or anybody else. You simply wanted to whine and moan that Mr. Gore was given the award. An award he deserved given his work around the planet in the last few years.
Is your hatred of anything good and moral destroyed your inner compass? Can’t you at least relish the fact that an American won the award – you know as a patriotic citizen that shoudl make you proud of an Americans accomplishments and recognition.

Nope — “missy” isn’t me. But I like the idea, though. I remember back in the 1970’s that journalism still had some principles. When Watergate was the story of the day, EVERYBODY was careful to get corroborating sources for what got reported, whether they were print reporters or broadcasters.
Of course, back then television news consisted of “straight news” more than commentary. There were panel shows — Meet the Press, Face the Nation, etc. — but even those tended to feature a balance of panelists.
Nowadays, pundit shows get more airtime than straight news reporting, so much so that many people actually GET their news from these shows, and the line between news and opinion (or, more accurately, “news” and “inflammatory conjecture”) has gotten very blurry.
Yes — a news show with actual news. News that has been obtained from investigative reporting and not just parroting press releases verbatim. News untainted by a corporate media boss with an agenda. It would be a breath of fresh air.

I’ll write really slowly so you’ll get it: It is YOUR business to find this stuff out – not TP’s, and certainly not mine. You need to care enough to do your own work. You need to care enough to take time to discover things you would wish to know. If laziness is one of your attributes, you have it perfected IMHO. As I stated before, you truly do not care what criteria was used. It would not matter to you. Even if you did discover what you wished to know, limbaugh would simply tell you to forget it anyway. You value limbaughs words over most everything else.
Why can’t you be proud of a fellow American winning a very important award? WATB is you ask me…

Because the Republicans are so damned full of themselves and want to be in control of everything that they cannot for one moment admit that someone else might be right about something. They cannot admit any wrongdoing; it is a sign of weakness. I go through the very same damn thing from time to time with a family member who is the epitome of Republicanism. She will argue with me over an issue, whether simple or complicated, and I can show her indisputable proof from the experts that back up my opinion, and she still will not concede. There have also been times where she has been forced to admit a mistake, while at the same time she will not accept responsibility for it nor offer any apology; instead she just laughs it off. I can only describe it as a combination of a lack of logic and a plethora of ignorance.
October 12th, 2007 at 4:54 pmBy that reasoning shouldn’t GW666 get the peace prize for putting to peace 600 thousand Iraqi’s and 4 thousand of our soldiers?

What the fk is that guy smoking?
Even if this war was a just one, even if this war was on the level of an effort like stopping Hitler, how the could anyone rationally think to give a PEACE prize to a GENERAL??!!
Alfred Nobel was the inventor of dynamite, an explosive. Nobel feared that the explosive would be used to harm human beings.
He created the peace prize in an effort to award people that worked to better humanity.
How the hell is it logical to give this award to a person that oversees the use of EXPLOSIVES that are intended to kill HUMAN BEINGS?
Talk about an authoritarian crackhead!!

Michal, you’re really not showing much brainpower here.
Your question “Why can’t anyone tell me what criteria was used to award algore the prize?” has been answered several times (handing you a fish) and you’ve also been instructed where you can find the answer yourself (teaching you HOW to fish). You’ve ignored all attempts at both strategies and continue to insist that we here owe you an answer that you haven’t gotten.
Also, your childish insistence on spelling the name of the former Vice-President and now Nobel Laureate in all lower case and as one word demonstrates an infantile reaction to information you don’t like. Congratulations.

October 12th, 2007 at 5:04 pmGore wins the “Peace†prize for works claimed to be based on science. I think the Nobel committee tacitly recognizes that the premises of his pseudo-science (never tested using the scientific method) would not hold up to the actual Nobel “Science†prize.
Well done Gore, you have joined other thugs, murders, and terrorists in the Nobel’s rogue gallery of winners!
Comment by JT
Our new Right Wing Loon JT wants us to think that Global Warming is not based on science. I’m sure the thousands of famous scientists around the world would be surprised to hear about that. Then the Loon suggests that Gore can’t win the Prize for Science because Global Warming is not truly scientific. Well, loon, Gore would not win the prize for science because he is not a scientist. He is a humanitarian who is speaking to the world about the dangers to our planet by Global Warming.
God this is so much fun watching these Right Wing Loons lose it over the awarding of the prize. It is driving them all bat-shit insane!

Uh — you’re letting the troll get to you. This is michael’s M.O. — he can’t debate intelligently, so he gets a charge out of being annoying instead. His method of arguing is to repeatedly ask questions (my friend has a three-year old who does the same thing). It doesn’t matter if you fall into his trap and answer them — he will continue to ask the same ones. Or he will respond to your answer with an even dumber one.
Look at the list of questions michael has put forth on this thread alone and ask yourself if this guy is worth your time:
“And which one was used to justify algore being chosen?”
“Then how do you learn the truth?”
“What did he do to win it? What criteria was used?”
“Why can no one tell me the criteria used to award your hero algore the prize?”
“What specifically did algore do to be awarded this prize?”
“And why can’t you give me the answer? Maybe you don ‘t know?”
“You really don’t know the answer, do you?”
“And so I’ll ask again, what criteria was used to award algore the prize? Millions of others have done much work benefiting the world, what specifically did algore do?”
Now, if michael really wanted to make the point of “I don’t think Al Gore is deserving of the Peace Prize because…” or “There are many other people in this world (names inserted here) who are more worthy of the prize than Al Gore”, he could have posted a coherent piece outlining his position. (He would have scored even more points if he realized that “Al Gore” is two words, and that “criteria” is plural, not singular.) He could have done some research on his own to bolster his arguments.
Instead, he challenges with the same questions relentlessly, even after they are answered, and even when it’s obvious he doesn’t really care about the answers. He thinks that he is making others look bad by his questions, but in reality he’s just like a whiny annoying little brother whose job it is to irritate others until they reach their limit and smack him a good one.
This troll isn’t worth your time or energy.

October 12th, 2007 at 5:21 pmBy the way, when Asshat of Year uses “algore”, he is using another of rush’s insults.
October 12th, 2007 at 5:21 pmIs it 2009 yet?
You actually believe the propaganda from junkscience.com?? Man you are pathetic.
I researched that hack Steven Milloy for a paper last year. (He’s the person that runs that site, did you know that?)
Milloy has been criticized by other journalists because of the corporate entities that have funded his various operations. If an audience member was willing to question Milloy’s information, they could find a fair amount of articles that question his motives. As he has accepted money and written articles favoring or demonizing various positions, Milloy’s journalistic ethics have been questioned. In the journalistic community, it is severely frowned upon to accept money for writing articles that either support or criticize an issue (3).
October 12th, 2007 at 5:22 pmIs there any doubt how unfair and (mentally) unbalanced fox “news” is? Zero credibility? They’re into negative cred numbers now. I am surprised they aren’t nominating Numbnuts GW: Iraq is so peaceful after four plus years of occupation that the whole MidEast is now a democracy.

October 12th, 2007 at 5:24 pmLIPSKY: I can’t think of anything more directly responsive to the idealism of the Nobel Peace Prize itself than the kinds of liberation and peacekeeping that our G.I. Joe and G.I. Jane has had as a mission since World War II.

October 12th, 2007 at 5:49 pmGuys, sorry to break in here, but I just saw this on The Raw Story. Apparently the Senate is preparing to give Bush the telco immunity he desires in the FISA law update:
President Bush vowed Wednesday not to sign a bill that doesn’t spare prosecution for the telecommunications industry, and House Democratic leaders have indicated they may grant immunity if Bush’s administration agrees to detail the companies’ involvement in the wiretapping program.
Excuse me, but what the hell good is it going to do to have the telco’s involvement in the wiretapping program revealed if nothing can be done about it? This is like a driver of a car slamming into another one and killing the occupants, and then saying, well, I’ll admit that I was driving drunk if you grant me immunity from prosecution.
I think I did read on crooksandliars that states can still go forward with lawsuits against the telcos, because they do not have to follow federal guidelines. Thus, any immunity granted by the federal government does not apply in the states.
There’s more at Firedoglake.

BETRAYUS
BETRAYUS
Peace awards are NEVER given to phony LYING generals who BETRAY US!
October 12th, 2007 at 7:59 pmHere’s a real answer, OK?
October 12th, 2007 at 8:08 pmthe deliberations of the Nobel Committee are secret and private. And no, outside of their stated reasons they do not and never have elaborated on the process and their criteria.
There has to be a certain amount of arbitrariness to the decisiions. Witness the prize I was almost as happy over–the Nobel Prize for Literature to Doris Lessing.
Why this year? There’s no way of knowing. It’s not the National Book Award: it’s for a body of work, not what you did lately. AFAIK, Lessing has been relatively quiet lately.
Scientists get awards for research they did years ago. Why they chose this eminent scientist over that eminent scientist this year is pretty impenetrable.
The Peace Prize is more current and more topical–but not always: giving the Peace Preace Prize to the International Red Cross in 1963, Amnesty International 1n 1977 and Doctors Without Borders in 1999 were not for specific acts.
And BTW, the Peace Prize was given in 2004 to Wangari Maathai, an ecological activist. So there’s a precedent.
So Al Gore joins Martin Lutyer King Jr. and Jimmy Carter, yes, and Henry Kisinger in the compay of winners. It’s just the opinions of some guys in Norway, who after all think ‘j’ is a vowel.
But they’re answerable to no one. And they don’t give a fig what any of us think.
So suck it up, trolls. They agree with us; they don’t agree with you. Whining about it makes you sound like spoiled brats.

Oh, also I went ot junk science and signed up for the competition. They evaluated my claim and I won the $125,000. I am really excited. I am probably going to spend it on McDonald’s meals so I can get the monopoly pieces and win even more money! Doesn’t McDonald’s own Fox?
October 13th, 2007 at 5:20 amWell, if the Peace Prize doesn’t carry the weight it once did, bighole, why are you and all of your brownshirt friends screaming bloody murder over it? why is it all over the news worldwide? Sounds to me like you’ve struck out again, and that you’re purely and simply envious that Al Gore has another one up on the miserable failure that you traitors allowed to steal your country, and are still allowing to murder innocent families in the Middle East and destroy families here at home. well, once again, you lose, bigtime! Losers, that’s who’s left for you to cower under your bed with. Suck it, LOSER.
October 13th, 2007 at 9:28 amIn reality, the world really does not hate us, the people.
They hate our leaders and what they have done with their power. They also know that this mess our leaders have put us into will be corrected in time.
When I talk about this in public there is always a 20% squirming like they just ’sharted’ their pants, it happened again last night.
October 13th, 2007 at 10:21 amDear Mr. President, are you going to openly praise Mr. Gore’s award?
October 13th, 2007 at 10:30 am……………………..
No, thats what I thought, oh well, our next leader will show you how it’s done. The regime change for America can not happen soon enough.
Apparently you all would prefer censorship of guest comments rather than open discussion, as long as it supports the lib point of view? Sounds pretty dangerous to me.
Comment by O. Bigfoot — October 13, 2007 @ 9:04 am
Since Fox is ‘balanced’ can you tell us the person on this segment who provided the point of view that Gore is a great man that deserved this award? Hmmm. Maybe their wasn’t one. Maybe Fox CONSISTENTLY provides a forum for extreme righties like Ann Coulter and Michelle Malkin without providing a balance. (Michael’s favorite Steven Milloy is also a Fox News regular.)
Here’s a game I like to play with the global warming denier trolls. It’s called “Quote the Scientific Organization”. We go back and forth providing quotes from scientific organizations that have taken a position on global warming. The organizations have to be valid scientific organizations not places like Junk Science that have been clearly shown to take money from corportations (like big tobacco) and issue reports that are clearly in their favor.
I’ll start with one from the predominant meteorological organization in this country, the American Meteorological Society.
“Despite uncertainties, there is adequate evidence from observations and interpretations of climate simulations to conclude that the atmosphere, ocean, and land surface are warming; that humans have significantly contributed to this change; and that further climate change will continue to have important impacts on human societies, on economies, on ecosystems and on wildlife through the 21st century snd beyond, according to a new information statement on climate change issued by the American Meteorological Society today. The AMS is the nation’s leading professional society for those involved in the atmospheric and related sciences.”

OK Bigfoot, your turn. Isn’t this a great way to debate the topic? Let’s let only the established scientific organizations give their point of view.
October 13th, 2007 at 10:31 amPerhaps you should look deep inside yourself and find the source of your hatred.
Comment by O. Bigfoot — October 13, 2007 @ 10:21 am
How about a four year long war that costs hundreds of billions of dollars, that has killed four thousand Americans and, at least, tens of thousands of Iraqis all fought over a rationale that turned out to be incorrect. I think any lover of ‘peace’ would find all of this a little disturbing.
And of course, this is the typical right-wing tactic of turning the argument around. YOU are the one who is so angry that they feel compelled to come to a web site where they are obviously going to start and argument.
October 13th, 2007 at 10:36 amOK. I Googled your Irena Sendler. Sounds like a decent person. I’m sure there are many decent nominees. But the esteemed Nobel committee picked Al Gore. Deal with it!!
Now, where are the scientific organizations that support your opinion on global warming? BTW, here is a list of the organizations that I was able to find that support the consensus view.
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)
Joint science academies’ statement 2005
American Meteorological Society
American Geophysical Union
American Institute of Physics
The American Astronomical Society
American Association for the Advancement of Science
Stratigraphy Commission of the Geological Society of London
Geological Society of America
American Association of State Climatologists
Australian Medical Association
American Chemical Society
American Quaternary Association
Engineers Australia (The Institution of Engineers Australia)
Still waiting for yours
October 13th, 2007 at 10:40 amAnd here’s a good one from Junk Science. (Yes, I’m actually pointing to a link on Junk Science!!) It’s Steve Milloy defending his stance on taking money from tobacco companies and writing scientific articles on their behalf. It’s argued that it’s fine to keep the funding source under wraps since it would be too hard to objectively show it. What a crock!!

Bigfoot, do you think it’s ok to take money from companies like Exxon and write pieces that appear to be scientific and counter prevailing scientific consensus on global warming?
October 13th, 2007 at 10:52 amFirst off, I don’t accept that there is consensus on global warming, which should have been apparent by now.
Secondly, I have no problem with Exxon supporting their business, which is oil. …
So, in short, my answer is: “Yes.â€
Comment by O. Bigfoot — October 13, 2007 @ 11:56 am
If there’s no consensus, let’s hear the scientific organizations that support your side. I provided numerous ESTABLISHED SCIENTIFIC ORGANIZATIONS that take my side. You provided a link to articles written by two INDIVIDUALS.
You have the right to your own opinion. You can even doubt evolution if you want. You should just be open enough to admit that you are going against established scientific consensus. IMHO, it’s pretty arrogant to suggest that you’re right but the scientific community, the broad group of experts in the matter, are wrong. That’s exactly what you are implying.
Exxon is clearly more concerned with their short-term profits than with the future of the planet we inhabit. You don’t have a problem with that. I do.
I believe in a free flow of information where research is done for the sole purpose of getting the right answer – the true intent of the scientific method. You think that it’s ok that those with the most money can submit “research” that distorts the real situation. That is not science. It is propoganda!
BTW, your “rest of the country” comment implies that we are in the minority. There have been many polls that show a majority of people in this country think our government is not doing enough to combat global warming. In fact, YOU are in the minority on this. Al Gore is responsible for educating a lot of people on this and for that I thank him.
As to be expected, we hear the line about the huge danger in trying to solve this problem. What possible damage could there be in doing simple things like driving more fuel-efficient vehicles and investing more money in alternative energy sources?
Again as to be expected, this global warming denier slips into the “out of my control” line of thinking which implies that we are powerless to do anything about it anyway. He goes on about his personal life style which is not at all the issue here. The issue is what kinds of decisions are made by our government at the much larger level. Indeed, there are many, many things that the Bush administration could have done to help ameliorate this problem. They have been completely negligent in this regard which is why Al Gore, and none of the Republicans that served under Bush won the Nobel peace prize.
October 13th, 2007 at 12:20 pmBigfoot trots out the typical right-wing talking point about scientists predicting a cooling back in the seventies. First, there was never scientific consensus nor empirical evidence, as there is today with global warming. Secondly, part of the beauty of science is that it is self-correcting. If one theory, even a well-established one, is challenged by enough subsequent research, then the theory could be modified or changed altogether.
To boil down this argument to its simpliest terms – Some scientists predicted in the 1970’s that man’s activities would lead to a global cooling effect. Thus, anyone suggesting today that man’s activities will lead to a warming effect must be wrong. Sorry, that just doesn’t pass the most basic logic test.
October 13th, 2007 at 12:27 pmremember ,Vinnie- it’s just because righties have some cognitive deficits that cause them to think that way. they also can’t reliably tell “M”’s from “W”’s, and forget about higher concepts like cause and effect. best just to chuckle to yourself, avoid making eye contact, and leave them on the corner with their cardboard signs, ranting to the wind.
October 13th, 2007 at 1:43 pmSorry, that just doesn’t pass the most basic logic test.
Comment by Vinnie — October 13, 2007 @ 12:27 pm
Bigfoot is a coward and a liar, so everything he says is suspect. I wager that his little “green” story is an outright lie as well.
October 13th, 2007 at 1:49 pm“But some folks feel he is a hypocritical fraud, and felt this way prior to his Academy Award and Nobel Peace Prize:”
yes, bighole, and some folks think that Bush is president. No accounting for the vast, deep stupidity of the right. thanks for pointing out how stupid you are, though. I might have forgotten.
October 13th, 2007 at 2:12 pm>First off, I don’t accept that there is consensus on global warming,
You don’t accept that that the words “accounting” and “accoutability” have two totally different meanings even though I’ve plainly displayed the dictionary defintion for each. So what?
Hahahahaha. Ah muckdogs favorite site. The guy repsonsible for this site has made a few other “interesting” assertions:
Cigarette smoke isnt bad for you.
If the world trade center had more asbestos in it, it wouldnt have collapsed.
Excuse us if we dont want to get our scientific evidence from people who get paid thousands of dollars an hour in consulting fees from the oil industry..
October 13th, 2007 at 4:49 pmI disagree that Petraeus deserve the Nobel over Gore. I hope that doesn’t make me a phony American.
October 14th, 2007 at 5:34 pmComments by BARTLEBEE:
All comments by Bartlebee show the desperation of a party of criminal frauds. You are such a joke , the exact opposite is true. The fact is that democrats are the ones who are guilty of what you accused Republicans of.
Say hello to the criminal democrat party of perpetual fraud. It’s because of infantile tantrum throwing losers like you that I no longer vote democrat. Thanks a million stupid bed wetter.
I am glad to see the party of traitors and frauds have been reduced to a bunch of sniveling lying nitwits. It’s time to rid this Country of Un-American democrat trash.
October 16th, 2007 at 5:54 pm“I disagree that Petraeus deserve the Nobel over Gore. I hope that doesn’t make me a phony American.”
Of course you do , you are a stupid democrat. Many years from now when it finally sinks in , remember who told you so.
And lefty crybaby you maggot scum, George W Bush “IS” the President of the United States. Now go change your diaper little punk ass.
October 16th, 2007 at 6:00 pmFirst off, Al Gore has done nothing to spread peace. All he has done in recent years is complain about Global Warming. He complains about increasing carbon emissions in the U.S. when we have reduced carbon emissions. The Third World is the area with rising carbon emissions, so if he wants to stop it, he can just go down to Venezuela and complain to Chavez himself. In the U.S. however, we have more efficient cars, cleaner power, and more efficient appliances. Now, on to General Petraeus. You say that war is not peace, which is true. War and peace are in fact opposites, but sometimes one can’t exist without the other. I am, of course, referring to the terrorist problems in Iraq. If we cut and run now, it will provide them with a victory that will allow them to say, “Hey, look, America can be beaten.” New soldiers will flock to their ranks and instead of fighting the war in Iraq, we’ll be fighting the war in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, or Atlanta. It is often said, and misunderstood, that we’re fighting over there so we don’t have to fight over here, but very few understand the meaning of that. These terrorists are not people you can reason with, they want the total complete destruction of America and all it stands for. We are fighting in the Middle East to show we are not afraid and we won’t stop until the job is done. If we cut and run now, then the terrorists will have an advantage. They will be the first to be able to say they defeated not only America, but also America’s principles. Even in Vietnam when we retreated, we did not give up on freedom, but retreating now means retreating from the world. Iraq is not an isolated war as fought in the past. The war in Iraq has combatants from all over the Middle East. Retreating from Iraq would mean retreating from the entire region. This would allow the extremists to recoup and rebuild. It will give them training and recruiting grounds in the most volatile area of the world. Plus, retreating from Iraq would make us seem weak, spurring on attacks from organizations currently afraid to fight us. The U.S. has the strongest military on the planet, but even it cannot stop terrorism if it is allowed to spread. We can defeat one, two, or three terrorist countries, maybe even all of them, but that can’t happen if we don’t take the fight to them. Right now, we have a bunch of groups that want us dead. If we show weakness by withdrawing from Iraq, them we will have one massive group that wants us dead. Even though the fragmented groups haven’t taken us down, the large group they would form if we surrendered in Iraq could. This is why we need to stay in Iraq, and this is why anyone, such as General Petraeus, who is trying to stop these terrorists is in fact trying to spread peace, because, as was stated before, war is not peace, and as long as these terrorist groups go unchallenged, there will be war.
