Conyers wants answers on pre-9/11 NSA program.
In court documents released last week, former Qwest CEO Joseph Nacchio revealed that “the NSA approached Qwest more than six months” before 9/11 “about participating in a warrantless surveillance program to gather information about Americans’ phone records.” In a letter to Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell and Justice official Kenneth Wainstein today, House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-MI) requested “an immediate briefing on the facts” of the program as well as all documents relating to the “pre-9/11 activities and the legal basis for conducting them.”

I’m sure Bush will have a very good explanation for this and that it was all perfectly legal. What I can’t understand is why it didn’t prevent 9-11 like the President said it would do in the future. Surely they would have included anything they had learned in that August 6th daily briefing, wouldn’t they?

You might be right, but I disagree with the target city. I would think W would want to get his base fired up for the eventual takeover of our democracy by taking out a red state city. Then he could crow all day about how he needs to remain in power because only he can protect us. It sounds far fetched, but not for Shooter and his gang that couldn’t shoot straight.

It’s in the Washington Post article linked at the top of the thread. A former executive at Quest claims the government tried to get them to do illegal spying for the government 6 months before 9-11. Please, let’s not forget that the Bush administration’s answer to any and all questions about possible illegal wiretapping always started with something like “9-11 changed all that,” or “that all changed on 9-11,” etc. etc.

It’s possible that “guilty by association” will mean that every individual member of these groups will be placed on trial for treason against this country before all is said and done. The courts are preparing their documents, Congress has been interviewing past aides, and the fireworks are set to begin.

That’s always been the question, Veritas. They had the strongest, constitutional tools in place already. But they couldn’t operate with impugnity (sp) and immunity under the rules. So they had to make their own – and ensure they had a DOJ in their pocket to justify it.

Congressman and Senators are privileged from arrest when going to and from Capitol Hill, but not members of the Executive Branch. (and that includes you, too, Mr. “Vice” President.) The LAST thing Rep Conyers should do is be polite about it. The Bush administration is counting on Congress not taking the steps they can to stop them. What ever became of Miers and Rove blowing off Congress? Conyers needs to remind Bush of a quote that Rummy used to carry around with him all the time: The Legislative Branch is in the first article and the Executive Branch is in the second article. Zakheim acquired civilian Boeing aircraft in advance of 9/11 to retrofit as fuel tankers. Remember the size of the fireball when the second tower was struck?

Larry Silverstein confessed to having brought down his building(s) with explosives.

Well that’s odd, seeing how the head of Pakistani Intelligence was forced to step down when FBI agents confirmed to Indian intelligence that the Pakistani ISI chief had ordered a $100,000 wire transfer to alleged lead hijacker Mohammad Atta. This was front page news in India, and was reported in several venues here. Not a word about ISI chief Lt. General Mahmoud Ahmad appears in any of the 9-11 reports. This news story makes the 9-11 Commission Report a bald faced lie.
Chertoff also had a hand in drafting the PATRIOT ACT.
Washington Post: “In meetings with the White House, Chertoff pushed for expanded powers to conduct secret searches, steps that civil libertarians have challenged with some success in federal court. (”Democracy,” a federal judge wrote recently in striking down such a provision, “abhors undue secrecy.”) Chertoff labored to dismantle barriers that kept intelligence agencies from sharing information with local law enforcement agencies.”

The American Free Press alleges that Michael Chertoff may hold dual-citizenship as an Israeli citizen. This charge stems from Chertoff’s mother Livia helping to create the state of Israel, and helping in a Mossad operation called “Magic Carpet,” where thousands of Yemeni Jews were flown to Israel in El Al planes in 1949-50. Israeli law holds that children of Israeli citizens are automatically citizens of Israel.
Chertoff has denied the allegation, and he has evaded specifics about his childhood: “I’ll take the fifth.” Chertoff’s father was a rabbi, and his siblings are reported to be ardent Zionists. Chertoff’s wife Meryl is a prominent member of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL).
This brings up a plethora of questions about Israeli spying in America, and Israeli links to the 9-11 operation itself.
For example: why were 140 Israeli agents who were detained after 9-11, many of whom had demolitions training, released without charge, and the matter made “classified?” Why were the five Mossad agents who were caught celebrating the WTC demolition, photographing themselves holding up cigarette lighters, released as well? And why has none of this made it into the “Independent” 9-11 Commission’s “Investigation”, or into the Congressional Joint Inquiry?
Did Michael Chertoff’s role as the head of the Department of Justice Criminal Division have something to do with this Israeli participation cover-up?
LA Times: “When President Clinton took office, he fired all the U.S. attorneys who had served under his Republican predecessor except one: New Jersey U.S. Attorney Michael Chertoff.”
That’s some exceptional guy, as the article shows. It reveals something quite out of the ordinary about Michael Chertoff.
Not a word from anyone in power about Chertoff’s successful defense of a known bin Laden financier. Even though the Bergen Record newspaper had published the facts of the case in a series of articles. This news was never picked up nationally — somehow not being newsworthy enough to rate a few lines in the major press — and they call this “freedom” and “democracy,” ad nauseum.
Michael Chertoff was confirmed by the senate in a vote of 98-0.

Popular Mechanics magazine probably didn’t worry about the ethical considerations of hiring a cousin of Michael Chertoff, a former Assistant Attorney General and the new Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), as senior researcher.
But the March 2005 issue of Popular Mechanics (PM) plumbs new depths of nepotism and Hearst-style “yellow journalism” with its cover story about 9/11. PM’s senior researcher, 25-year-old Benjamin Chertoff, authored a propagandistic cover story entitled “Debunking 9/11 Lies” which seeks to discredit all independent 9/11 research that challenges the official version of events.
Benjamin’s mother in Pelham, New York, however, was more willing to talk. Asked if Benjamin was related to the new Secretary of Homeland Security, Judy said, “Yes, of course, he is a cousin.”

The Assistant Attorney General in charge of criminal investigations at the time was Michael Chertoff, the current head of the Dept. of Homeland Security. Chertoff, the son of the first hostess of Israel’s national air carrier, El Al, is thought to be an Israeli national.
One of the Israeli agents later told Israeli radio that they had been sent to “document the event” – the event which took the lives of some 3,000 Americans.
Despite the fact that the Israelis arrested in New Jersey evidently had prior knowledge or were involved in the planning of 9/11, the U.S. mainstream media has never even broached the question of Israeli complicity in the attacks.

ICTS UK Ltd is another Israeli-run ‘transportation security’ company with offices in London. Although the company’s registered address is listed as 8 Baker Street, they operate, however, from an office on the first Floor of Tavistock House South. Curiously, this is the exact same location that Fortress GB operate from. More curious still, Tavistock House is the exact location where the number 30 bus exploded on 7th July.
Given that both companies provide ‘transportation security’ services, operate from the same floor of the same office complex, and given that both are owned and run by Israelis, only a hardened ‘coincidence theorist’ would deny that there is evidence indicating tangible links between the two. Indeed, one could be forgiven for believing that the same people are behind Fortress GB Ltd and ICTS UK Ltd.
As Christopher Bollyn points out, these companies merit being investigated because “they provide ’security technology’ for the tube lines that were bombed.” Bollyn also points out that these Israeli companies perfect their ’security’ skills in Israel and Iraq and then apply them in Britain and the USA.
ICTS International were the company who ran the security arrangements at ALL the airports from where the hijacked airliners departed from on the morning of September 11th, 2001.

US Nuclear Weapons Being “Guarded” By Israel
American supporters of Israel were delighted to learn that an Israeli company, Magal Security Systems – owned in part by the government of Israel – is in charge of security for the most sensitive nuclear power and weapons storage facilities in the United States.
The largest perimeter security company in the world, Magal started out as a division of Israeli Aircraft Industries (IAI) – which was owned in part by the government of Israel. In recent years, however, Magal evolved into a publicly-traded company, although IAI (and thus the government of Israel) still holds a substantial share in the highly successful firm.
What all of this means is that the government of Israel will actually have control over the Security of America’s nuclear weapons.
And with current U.S. Homeland Security Chief, Michael Chertoff, not only a strong supporter of Israel but also the son of a woman who has strong Israeli ties – even including service with El Al, the national airline of Israel-Magal, owned in party by Israeli Aircraft Industries – will be a clear-cut favorite in the eyes of the power brokers in official Washington who have the power to grant lucrative security contracts.

October 15th, 2007 at 8:30 pmI am so sick and tired of reading of all the dirty rotten deeds this criminal administration have committed against this country and its citizens.Every week something else comes to light and NOTHING IS DONE.We need to be rid of,not only the President and Cheney but the ENTIRE CONGRESS,BOTH HOUSES.They are allowing this to continue with a total disregard to the damage this is doing to our country and it’s system of government.Does no one care about the futures of our children and grandchildren??Mr.Conyers and Pat Leahy are both as involved in this as Bush and Cheney.The Democrats have done NOTHING to hold these criminals responsible for their crimes.What this country needs is LEADERSHIP.I dont see that in any of the candidates currently running for the Presidency.But the congress is just as guilty.

Ace is a former poster here who would cut and paste long diatribes against Israel full of conspiracies. Rather than just post a synopsis and link to his sources, he would fill up a blog with post after post after post of cut and paste information.

Sorry Right Wing Loon Exley. If he has proof that these meetings took place, then it makes no difference if he is convicted of a crime.
That is one reason why we can’t give the telcoms immunity from prosecution. Because if they think they will be prosecuted for spying on Americans without a warrant, they will sing like a bird to make their legal problems go away. And that’s what we need right now. We are starting to get whistle blowers, but we need a big one like Verizon telling Congress that Bush offered them a lucrative contract if they allowed him to spy on Americans without a warrant.

He was “on fire” a year ago before the piggish GOP dug up some insignificant dirt on him using one of his staff to run an errand. Imagine how that would stack up today with the incredible abuse of government personnel occurring in every Republican office in this country?
It’s such a shame that Conyers is being blackmailed. I have absolutely no doubt that this is what’s changed this man.

It goes something like this: If Bush gets impeached, then Deadeye Dick moves up. Once he controls things, he immediately pardons his sidekick. This would be far too good for someone who deserves to do prison time.

It hasn’t been that long ago that, I believe, Conyers was in fact putting together evidence to draw up articles of impeachment against Bush. Apparently it has been snuffed out…I don’t have any details because frankly, with impeachment “off the table” and Conyers’ failed effort (not for lack of trying) to get Bush to answer questions about the Downing Street Minutes, I kinda lost heart.

While it’s good news that the truth is finally coming out, I’m saddened that this sh*t has been kept hidden for 7 loooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnggggg years. Imagine all of the people who knew something and could have spoken up before the 2004 election.
While I understand that they’d have been hammered by the right, they could have made a significant impact, changed the future of our country and taken us off the path leading to fascism.

Many a conviction has been won by criminals turning states evidence. Are you claiming we should stop using this valuable law enforcement tool simply because the witnesses are criminals?
Nacchio is a felon to be sure, but employees of other phone companies with clean records who arent trying to save thier butts have coroborated this guys story: that the government was pursuing this wiretapping pre-9/11. (see Electronic Frontier Foundations lawsuit againt AT+T)
The AT+T employee mentioned in that case had no reason to lie, has proof to back up his assertions, and by law could not share in any monies won by EFF in the case, as this is not a Qui Tam action.
Any illegal wirtapping pursued by the government pre-911 per se defeats and destroys thier “wartime powers” argument. Interesting enough, the phone companies have not denied it either. If its not true, why dont they just deny it? Would save them an awful lot of trouble..
