As ThinkProgress has highlighted, the right wing lost no time in harshly attacking Al Gore for winning the Nobel Peace Prize. Bill Kristol, for example, called the award a “prize given by bloviators to a bloviator for nothing.” The New York Times’s Paul Krugman explains the right’s hatred:
The worst thing about Mr. Gore, from the conservative point of view, is that he keeps being right. In 1992, George H. W. Bush mocked him as the “ozone man,” but three years later the scientists who discovered the threat to the ozone layer won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. In 2002 he warned that if we invaded Iraq, “the resulting chaos could easily pose a far greater danger to the United States than we presently face from Saddam.” And so it has proved. [...]
Which brings us to the biggest reason the right hates Mr. Gore: in his case the smear campaign has failed. He’s taken everything they could throw at him, and emerged more respected, and more credible, than ever. And it drives them crazy.
It’s hard to be authoritian and a moronic at the same time, but the Republicans keep trying.
October 15th, 2007 at 11:46 amOf course it drives them crazy. They are sore losers. They are cowards who can’t admit that they are wrong. They are defective people. I suspect that a common thread among these sick freaks was social rejection during their youth that they have never been able to overcome.
October 15th, 2007 at 11:46 amAl Gore is a pretender to the thrown. He acts like an environmentalist but doesn’t have a solar powered home, drives gas powered SUV’s. is advocating a carbon tax without keeping Americas poor in mind. And worst of all he’s just a liar so it gives the Right breathing room when concerning global warming. “Where’d you hear that from Al Gore?” They all say now. So he’s done very little to convert anyone who is still sitting on the fence. Even worse he has inspired more people to think it’s a Hoax! Screw Al Gore and his Censorship happy wife.
October 15th, 2007 at 11:49 amGore was the smart kid in class who blew the bell curve for all these mouthbreathing jackanapes.
Again, I can only imagine how nice the planet is in the parallel universe next to ours, where Chimpy’s election-stealing hijinks were thwarted, and everyone is in the place they deserve to be (Gore in the WH, Chimpy and his accomplices in prison).
October 15th, 2007 at 11:50 amThe problem is, Gore is a clear thinker, and while one clear thinker is not really an issue, rational thinking has a way of spreading.
The repulsive carrion-eaters in power can’t afford to have the plebes actually thinking…a rational, critical populace is their greatest threat.

Wasn’t he the one who justifies it by saying that he buys carbon credits from his own company? Well I guess it’s OK to have a huge carbon foot print as long as you’ve got the dugh to pay for it right? What a hypocrite! No wonder he lost in 2000. Even his own state of TN didn’t vote for him. October 15th, 2007 at 12:07 pmPredictably, the conservative chattering class and its amen corner in the right-wing blogosphere are apoplectic about the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Al Gore. But their rage and angst about the Nobel Committee’s “politicized awards” for “mass exaggerators” and “deceptive rhetoric” isn’t merely a function of the inconvenient truth of the success of Gore’s global warming campaign. No, the rugged individualists of the right are just hopping mad that they never win prizes designed to recognize contributions to, well, the rest of humanity.
To remedy this perpetual slight, then, here are:

Let’s assume that the people warning us about global warming are right (regardless of what you may think of the actual individuals doing the warning), and thousands of people die as a result of our inaction, are you prepared to live with their blood on your hands.
Cause if you’re not than you need to get out of the way of people who are trying to fix the problem.
October 15th, 2007 at 12:11 pmThe losing strategy in Iraq has become symbolic to the GOP’s losing strategy to maintain political dominance. Despite calls from more moderated members of the party to use less divisive rhetoric, and actually start listening to the people, they continue on their current path leading them off of a cliff. They know they’ve dug themselves in to a deep hole, and in their frenzied panic are clawing at the loose dirt at the walls, in effect only digging themselves deeper. They’ve lost all ability to use sound reasoning and logic. Of course they don’t truly think that the Nobel Peace prize is unimportant, otherwise they wouldn’t give it any press. They’re scrambling to discredit a highly respected award in the international community because they know how bad it makes them look.
In all reality, there’s no sense in us getting upset over the dribble that pseudo-intellectuals like Coulter or Malkin churn out, because so long as it receives national attention by people other than the usual bobble heads, it only works against them. They are in essence handing the 2008 election to the Democratic party with each word that comes out of their mouths. More of us should encourage them to speak unfiltered so that more people can see how ridiculous their opinions really are. All we have to do is expose it and make sure it’s seen.

The amusement I get when the rightwing chooses it’s spots to doff their “Scoop Brady” hats and all of a sudden turn into skeptics and debunkers is eternal.
What you have presented is a personal attack in the guise of skepticism. Instead of addressing global warming directly, you try to call into question the credibility of the individual. You have failed miserably to rebut his arguments and the mainstream of society has rejected your desperate arguments.
It’s interesting to see you act as though we’re in some kind of courtroom and employ this legal tactic while at the same time rejecting all manner of evidence presented.
This sh!t is weak.
October 15th, 2007 at 12:13 pmIt would be wonderful if Gore ran and won….I would vote for him in a heart beat…..It does not appear he will, so far……For now only Kucenich is worth my vote
After listening to the talking heads and reading everything I can about Gore running for President, I think I agree that he should not run. Right now he is more important and can do more good for the country and for the world where he is. If he runs for President and wins, he will be spending all his time cleaning up the mess that Bush is leaving the next President and would not have time to continue his good work in helping to save our planet. In a perfect world, I would love to see Gore as President, but we don’t have a perfect world and he is needed more where he is right now.
And I agree, Kucinich is the only one running who I could vote for without holding my nose. John Edwards is a close second, but there are parts of him that is still too corporatist for my taste, including his health care plan.
October 15th, 2007 at 12:13 pmSix months before Bush invaded Iraq, Al Gore said that a pre-emptive war on Iraq would increase the number of terrorists, undercut US influence in the region, and diminish US legitimacy in the world affairs.
The rightwingers claimed Saddam Hussein was a dire WMD threat, that he was in cahoots with al Qaeda, that the war was necessary.
No wonder the rightwingers want to bury Al Gore: objectively, he was 100% right, and they were 100% wrong.
Rightwingers don’t have what it takes to govern: regular contact with reality. They live in Fantasyland.

But Faux Opinion Channel still clings to the threadbare possibility that someone outside the Bush administration or the Dittohead Brigade will take them seriously as an information source, right? And if they were truly “fair and balanced”, one might think that they would exhibit some pride in an American being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

October 15th, 2007 at 12:32 pmIs it dissenting opinion or poorly formulated dissenting opinion?
Usually it is neither. Instead of mounting arguments, TP trolls almost always indulge in diversionary strategies: changing the subject, inventing straw dogs to attack, character assassination.
Mostly I’m glad TP has found a way to deal with the problem of sock puppets. I think almost all the rightwing troll posts here at TP are by the same person.

I always thought conservative action meant choosing a path of action that causes the least amount of damage, error or change so that future actions can be sustained and results predictable.
Pretty sad that they lack imagination….except when it comes to war of course, which they are also bad at since all their war dreams turn out to be nightmares (but profit for their buddies of course).

I don’t know about the rest, but I have changed my opinion about something a few times based on what something else wrote here in TP (and that includes conservative views, not merely liberal ones).
And then I’ve seen trolls blaming everything wrong under the sun on Clinton, filling the board with spam or idiotic messages (Mr P’s “heyooooos” comes to mind), and derailing the subject at hand (what’s Al Gore’s house has to do with the subject of melting ice caps?).
I’m glad about TP cleaning the trolls’ messages.

Comment by O. Bigfoot — October 15, 2007 @ 1:15 pm
Ok. Let’s play a little with the math involved. Making up a new energy unit called the MegaGore, which is the quantity of energy that Al Gore uses in his house in a year.
Let’s say that Al Gore’s flying around consumes X quantity of energy… let’s say he uses up 10 MegaGores of energy. By speaking in front of all those people, and convincing them, he may prevent the use of, say, 20 thousand MegaGores.
Let’s say instead that he rides a horse from town to town, consuming 0.0001 MegaGores of energy. Since the horse’s speed is so much slower than a jet plane, Al Gore can reach less people, and he prevents the use of 40 or 50 MegaGores of energy.
I’d say the benefits of reaching more people outweigh the energy used by Gore and his jet. Is that hypocrisy on Al Gore’s part, to fly around in a jet instead of riding a horse?
October 15th, 2007 at 1:28 pmLuis:
No, Gore will only be a non-hypocrite if he lives in a cave, hunts his own food with a spear and never ever uses one kilowatt of energy.

I do think Al Gore was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. But he seems to be interested in using that spoon to feed the whole world, not just himself and his buddies.

October 15th, 2007 at 2:35 pmThe current U.S. strategy in Iraq is working, as evidenced by statistics. The world is a better place without Saddam Hussein in power, and the threats from the middle east have been reduced immensely by removing him.
Comment by O. Bigfoot — October 15, 2007 @ 12:43 pm
Statistics? Whose statistics? How much credibility can any reasonable human being give “statistics†emanating from this administration? Time and time again those so called statistics have been proven to be fiction.
Most of us would agree that the world is better off without the likes of Saddam. The disagreement comes when considering the means and cost to achieve that goal. In the case of president cheney and his hand puppet the means consisted primarily of lies, fabrications and deceit. The cost to date includes the lives of almost 4000 U.S. troops, tens if not hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians and hundreds of billions of dollars. In the feeble minds of gullible neocon lemmings, such as yourself, that may be a small price to pay to remove one murderous tyrant, but to those of us who did not buy into the political spin from the get-go, the cost has been far too great. Granted it’s speculation at this point, but one has to wonder if diplomacy had been allowed to run its course, whether saddam would have been removed from power in less time than it took by invading the country under false pretenses. there is NO question that the cost, in terms of lives and dollars, would have been a fraction of what is now.
as far as your comment about the threats from this region having been reduced immensely, all i can say is get your cranium out of your rectal vault! that is laughable! the threats from the middle east have never been greater thanks to dick and dumbass. The most effective means of reducing the threat from the middle east is to put your appointed leaders on trial and show the world how our justice system was designed to work.

October 15th, 2007 at 3:27 pmThe problem–and the debasement of discourse in this country–is that the online conservatives don’t debate ideas–they debate facts. Do they want totalk unilateralism versus multilateralis. Do you want to talk about the strange turn American Freedom takes when it starts to talk about guns?
October 15th, 2007 at 3:42 pmDo you want to talk about christianity versus laissez-fare capitalism? Do you want to talk about copyright law? All these are fruitful topics I’ve had enjoyable discusiiond with myconservative, libertarian and Christian friends.
Of course, some of y’all come and say: I’m here for a serious discussion. Let me start:You’re a moron.”
But even if you don’t do that, you come here to state what you think is a fact. Thw problem is, over and above the fact that most of them are wrong, is that you don’t discuss facts: you accept them, reject them, or ignore them. Start talking about an idea, and you’ll be surprised how far you’ll get.
It’s William F. Buckley vs. Rush Limbaugh. Buckley constantly tried to engage his opponents to show the superiority of his set of ideas.Rush Limbaugh just makes stuff up. Rush is devoid of ideas in his discourse: While Buckley would say ‘the role of tradition in our society is under attack,” Rush will say “Hillary Clinton murdered Vince Foster.”
You see the difference? an idea is powerful and can change minds. Facts do not. Even on the best day they are inferior to ideas, vastly so–but if you’re careless with your facts, you fail completely.
The right-wing’s position against Gore kind of reminds me of Wile E. Coyote and the Roadrunner. You all recall in these old cartoons of how the Roadrunner pretty much goes about his business (occasionally tossing a zinger in the coyote’s direction, but usually just letting the coyote destroy himself), while the coyote went to great elaborate lengths to bring down the Roadrunner — usually getting pulverized himself for his efforts.
And the coyote never learned…

I beg to differ with you on only this point, because I almost always agree with your posts. O. Bigfoot has done nothing “abusive” that I can see. I admit I disagree with almost everything he says, but I believe he has a right to state his points here at TP (this is what makes us better than RedState).
“Abusive” is blatant name-calling without making any other debate point (”you lefties are all morons”), filling up space with complete nonsense (”HeyooooOOOOOooooOOOOOoooo moonbats!” or pasting the same sentence a gazillion times), or posting obscenities or other offensive matter. I could make a case for michael and his incessant questions being abusive, although I think he is really more annoying than anything else.
O. Bigfoot has done none of those things. Sure, he’s sipped from the wingnut Kool-aid fountain a few too many times. But I find most of his points easily refutable (sometimes I honestly don’t know where he gets his info), and he takes criticism of his posts reasonably well — in that he doesn’t resort to throwing tantrums like some trolls do.
Let’s save the “report abuse” button for those who truly deserve it.
